Lee W. Ellwein

RAPID CITY - Lee W. Ellwein, 51, Rapid City, died Friday, July 21, at a Rapid City nursing home.

Survivors include one son, A. J. Ellwein, Saline, Mich.; his mother, Willys Ellwein, Rapid City; two brothers, Marc Ellwein, Sioux Falls, and Jay Ellwein, Louisville, Colo.; and one sister, Janet Satter, Moorhead, Minn.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Thomas L. Thomas

STURGIS - Thomas L. Thomas, 53, Sturgis, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne Thomas; and his father, E.L. "Red" Thomas, both of Sturgis.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Everett Robert Cammack

RAPID CITY - Everett Robert Cammack, 99, Rapid City, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Westhills Village in Rapid City.

Everett was born Aug. 11, 1900, at Deadwood. He moved with his family while very young to Sturgis, then was raised in Sulphur County near Newell, where his father filed a land claim. He attended schools in Newell for the eight grades they had there, then worked as a ranch hand for various ranchers. He married Catherine Anderson, daughter of OK and Edith Anderson of Sturgis, on July 2, 1921. The couple bought a ranch near Hulett, Wyo., and raised two sons, LeRoy Robert and Lloyd Dale. Catherine died in January 1951, so he sold the ranch and moved to Shelton, Wash. He spent a year with his brother, Ray, salmon fishing in Alaska. Everett moved to Rapid City and worked for Western Equipment Co. He married Blanche Lampert Evans on Sept. 5, 1953, and stayed in Rapid City the rest of his life.

He is survived by his son, Dale, Sheridan, Wyo.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three stepchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first and second wives, parents, son, granddaughter, two brothers and a sister.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City, with the Rev. Ron Hennies officiating.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Hills.

Arrangements are with Carlsen-Jolley Funeral Home in Sturgis.

Donald Severe Nugent

SPEARFISH - Donald Severe Nugent, 92, Spearfish, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Triplett (Boyd), Spearfish; one daughter, Patricia Boyd, Lead; two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be private, but the family plans a remembrance for Don from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at the Nugent residence, 315 Polley Drive, Spearfish, and friends are invited to stop in.

Fidler Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude Edlund

ST. ONGE - Gertrude Edlund, 94, St. Onge, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at her home.

Survivors include three sons, Wayne Martin, Eagle Butte, Avin Martin, Piedmont, and Kenneth Martin, Albuquerque, N.M.; three daughters, Darlene LeBeau, Eagle Butte, Lynnelle Miles, Albuquerque, and Margie Sivertson, Bottineau, N.D.; three stepsons, John Edlund and Darwin Edlund, both of Sturgis, and Duane Edlund, Rapid City; two stepdaughters, Sandy Bever, Davenport, Iowa, and Sharon Rank, Sturgis; one sister, Alta Johnson, Portland, Ore.; 37 grandchildren; 92 great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, July 24, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, and from 8 a.m. until service time Tuesday, July 25. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Dan Freed officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Thomas L. Thomas

STURGIS - Thomas L. Thomas, 53, of Sturgis, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He was born on March 15, 1947, at Mitchell to Edwin L. "Red" and Norma (Coats) Thomas. Tom attended grade school in Parker and, in 1958, his family moved to Rapid City. He was a graduate of Rapid City High School in 1965 and went on to attend college at the University of South Dakota and Black Hills State University. Tom graduated from National Guard OCS in 1972 and later received a computer science degree from National College in 1985. On Dec. 28, 1973, he married Joanne MacArthur, and the couple made their home in Piedmont. In 1995, they built a new home and moved to Boulder Canyon near Sturgis.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne Thomas, and his father, E.L. "Red" Thomas, both of Sturgis; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Thomas.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, July 24, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, at Canyon Lake United Methodist Church, 3500 Canyon Lake Drive, Rapid City, with the Rev. Bob Ruedebusch officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Rapid City.

A memorial has been established to the youths of Rapid City with juvenile diabetes.

James Allan Satterlee

CHAMBERLAIN - James Allan Satterlee, 63, Chamberlain, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at Mid Dakota Hospital.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel Satterlee and Allan Satterlee, both of Beulah, Wyo.; one sister, Patricia Schaefer, Chancellor; one grandchild; three stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Wevik Funeral Chapel, and one hour before services, which will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 24, at United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Richard Fylling officiating. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery.Latricia 'Trish' Blomberg

STURGIS - Latricia "Trish" Blomberg, 47, Sturgis, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at her home.

She is survived by her husband, William Blomberg, Sturgis; two sons, David Riggins and Casey Blomberg, both of Sturgis; three brothers, Robert Liston and Fred Liston, both of Stratford, Wis., and David Liston, Bend, Ore.; two sisters, Irma Jean Sutherland, Yuma, Ariz., and Etta Sieber, Rapid City; and one grandson.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, at Carlsen-Jolley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ed Dean officiating.

Lee W. Ellwein

RAPID CITY - Lee W. Ellwein, 51, Rapid City, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at a Rapid City nursing home.

Lee was born on Dec. 22, 1948, in Sioux Falls to Harold E. and Willys (Thorson) Ellwein.

He attended schools in Sioux Falls, graduating from Lincoln High School. Lee went on to attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls, graduating cum laude with a B.S. degree. He then received his M.S., cum laude, from the University of Michigan. After 25 years of service to his country in the U.S. Navy (four years) and the U.S. Coast Guard (20 years), he retired in 1996 at the rank of commander. His service included the Persian Gulf War. At the time of his death, Lee was a civilian natural-resources specialist at Ellsworth Air Force Base.

He enjoyed all outdoor activities, including riding his Harley, running, climbing and hunting with this dog, Taj.

Survivors include a son, Aaron J. Ellwein, Saline, Mich.; his mother, Willys Ellwein, Rapid City; two brothers, Marc Ellwein and his wife, Tammy, of Sioux Falls, and Jay Ellwein and his wife, Francess, of Louisville, Colo.; one sister, Janet Sater and her husband, Art, of Moorhead, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 24, at South Canyon Lutheran Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Bruce Thalacker and intern David Watson officiating. Inurnment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by the Ellsworth Air Force Base Honor Guard. A memorial has been established to South Canyon Lutheran Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Henry B. Bickel

ABERDEEN - Henry B. Bickel, 81, Aberdeen, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Bethesda Home.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Bickel, Aberdeen; three daughters, Mary Jane Peterson, Adrian, Minn., Joye Lynn Hoerth, Aberdeen, and Betty Mae Edwards, Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Martha Berndt and Esther Werner, Herreid, and Ruth Schanzenbach, McLaughlin; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 24, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Churh with the Rev. Roger Noer officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24.

Spitzer-Osthus Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Niva

BELLE FOURCHE - Robert Niva, 64, Belle Fourche, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include one sister, Donna Wallick, Monte Vista, Colo.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

Gideon Murdo 'Dode' McGinnis

FAITH - Dode McGinnis, 90, longtime Faith-area resident, passed away on Thursday evening, July 20, 2000, at Sturgis Longterm Care Center.

Gideon Murdo "Dode" McGinnis was born March 8, 1910, at Forest City to Melvin and Florence (Ellis) McGinnis. The family moved to a ranch in the Bixby area of Perkins County, north of Fox Ridge, when he was a small boy, and there he grew up, attending rural school. He worked with his parents on the ranch, broke horses and did sheep shearing in his early days.

He was united in marriage to Ruth L. Murphy on May 23, 1936, at Dupree. For a time, they lived in Western states, where he worked for a prospector in a gold mine and on construction of the Fort Peck and Grand Coulee dams and the All American Canal in Arizona. They moved back to ranch in the "Deep Creek" area west of Faith in May of 1939.

In May of 1955, Dode and Ruth moved to Faith, where he was employed by Kelly's Super Valu as a meat cutter for 20 years. Dode also was Faith's weather observer from 1977 to 1997. He will be remembered as someone who could fix anything, for his love of trapping and hunting, and for his sense of humor.

Keeping his memory most near are his wife of 64 years, Ruth McGinnis, Faith; four sons, Gary, of both Faith and Mesa, Ariz., Jay Dee, Shelton, Wash., Mickey, Faith, and Rockey, Belle Fourche; three daughters Treva McNeill, Edmonton, Alberta, Patricia Sandstrom, Rapid City, and Donna Keller, Baldwin, N.D.; brothers Jim McGinnis, Sturgis, and Norman McGinnis, Fountain Valley, Calif.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; as well as many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald; grandson Jay Dee McGinnis Jr.; great-grandson Brandon Bollinger; brothers Ellis, in infancy, Robert and Roy McGinnis; and sisters Joy Short, Betty Conger and Maude Estes.

Per his request, no public services are planned. A memorial service is pending for the weekend of July 29, during the McGinnis family reunion. Entrusted with the arrangements is Faith Area Memorial Chapel in Faith.

Francis 'Fran' Sorensen

PIERRE - Francis "Fran" Sorensen, 99, Pierre, and formerly of Murdo, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare Center.

Survivors include two daughters, Esther Schmidt, Pierre, and Agnes Schmidt, Draper; "like" daughter, Beulah Aske, Murdo; two sisters, Toodie Robertson, Carson City, Nev., and Alice Farris, Murdo; 21 grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Murdo, with a 7 p.m. prayer service. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, at United Methodist Church in Murdo, with the Rev. Morris Nelson officiating. Burial will be at Murdo City Cemetery.

Kathleen E. 'Bette' Matkins

HILL CITY - Kathleen E. "Bette" Matkins, 79, Hill City, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at her home.

Survivors include one son, Marvin Matkins, Hill City; one daughter, Mickee Rarick, Spearfish; one brother, Galen Quinn, Raleigh, N.C.; and one sister, Marilyn "Tiny" Poss, Gainesville, Fla.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
