Marcus Goldhammer

WAGNER -- Marcus Goldhammer, 74, of Wagner died Thursday, December 23, 2004, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Wagner after an 18-year battle with cancer.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 27, 2004, at St. John Lutheran Church in Wagner. Burial will be in the ZCBJ Cemetery, rural Wagner.

Visitation will be Sunday from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Marcus Leo Goldhammer was born September 26, 1930, in Hutchinson County, SD, the son of Leo T. and Alfrieda (Kraft) Goldhammer. He died Thursday, December 23, 2004, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Wagner after an 18-month battle with cancer. Marc had attained the age of 74 years, two months and 27 days.

Marc was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Delmont, on Oct. 19, 1930, and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran in Tyndall, SD, on August 13, 1944. He was an active and faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Wagner.

Marc attended schools in Bon Homme County, and graduated from Wagner High School in 1948.

Marc married Elaine M. Rehwaldt on August 20, 1950, at St. John Lutheran Church in Wagner. Four daughters were born to this union: Donna, Marlaine, JoAnn and Jayne. Marc and Elaine farmed two miles west and 1/4 south of Wagner. Elaine died of cancer on September 27, 1984.

Marc married Sarah Jane (Moos) Stahlecker at St. John Lutheran Church in Wagner on September 14, 1985, and welcomed her children, Keven Stahlecker and Joan Truman, into his family. Marc and Sarah enjoyed being part of the South Dakota-Nebraska Community Builders Organization.

Marc had a lifelong interest in conservation of the land and a huge concern for the care of the Missouri River resources and their management. During most of Marc's active years, he was involved in the Charles Mix County Soil Conservation District and Randall Resource, Conservation and Development Association. He served as a charter member of the S.D. Railroad Authority and held that position until his death.

Marc will be remembered for his faith, love of his family and telling stories.

Thankful for having shared his life are his wife, Sarah, of Wagner, S.D.; his mother, Alfrieda Goldhammer, Wagner, SD; his daughters: Donna (Dave) Rundquist, Green, KS; Marlaine (John) Doidge, Glencoe, MN; JoAnn Goldhammer, Wagner, SD; and Jayne (Doug) Montgomery, Apple Valley, MN; stepchildren: Keven (Debi) Stahlecker, Canton, SD; Joan (Gary) Truman, Wagner, SD; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four brothers: Marlyn (Sharon), Rapid City, SD; Paul, Wall, SD; Maurice (Susan), Lakewood, CO; and Andre (Darlene), Elkton, SD; brother-in-law, Donald Rehwaldt, Dubuque, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; his father, Leo; grandparents; four sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law.

Memorials will be directed to St. John Lutheran Church in Wagner.

Bernard Bueber

TRIPP -- Bernhard Bueber, 85, of Tripp died Thursday (Dec. 16, 2004) at the Tripp Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Goglin-Kelley Memorial Chapel, Tripp.

Joy A. Baker

Interment will follow in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland.
Honorary casketbearers are granddaughters Kelly Jo Dreke-Betsworth and Billie LeAnn Schanbeck-Welch and the ladies of the Red Hat Society.

Casketbearers are grandsons Michael Baker, Damon Magstadt, Carson Magstadt, Matt Betsworth, Nick Dreke and Jesse Schanbeck.

Visitation will be on Friday, December 17, from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel in Scotland.

Joy Ann Baker was born on April 19, 1931, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and was adopted at the age of three weeks by John and Gladys (Retzer) Kurvink of Martin, South Dakota. She was baptized in the Zion Lutheran Church. Joy grew up in rural Martin and moved to Scotland, South Dakota, with her mother in 1941 following the death of her father. She graduated from Scotland High School and was a member of the United Methodist Church. Joy married Glen V. Baker, Jr. on August 28, 1948, in the United Methodist Church in Scotland. They are the parents of four daughters: Kathryn (Ray) Magstadt of Elk Point, South Dakota; Beverly Baker of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Karen (Steve) Dreke and Kaye Schanbeck, both of State Center, Iowa. They have seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Glen was employed with Cargill, Inc. for 38 years and they resided in several places in South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska. Following Glen's retirement in 1988, they returned to Scotland to make their home. During her lifetime, Joy worked as an Activity Director for the Good Samaritan Center and was employed with several newspapers and served as a bookkeeper for Cargill. Joy was active in her church and served as a member and officer on the church board and with the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Scotland Civic Club, the Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Ladies of the Red Hat Society. Joy enjoyed her computer, quilting and sharing coffee with her friends.

Joy died on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital in Scotland at the age of 73 years.

Left to cherish Joy's memory will be her husband, Glen; four daughters; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Joy's parents preceded her in death.

Ray McFarland

RANDOLPH, Neb. -- Ray McFarland, age 83 of Randolph, NE, died on Sunday, December 12, 2004 at the Osmond General Hospital in Osmond, Nebraska.
Funeral Services will be on Thursday, December 16, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Bloomfield, NE, with the Rev. Timothy Pratt officiating.

Burial will be at the Bloomfield Cemetery in Bloomfield, Nebraska.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 15, 2004, from 1:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, NE. Visitation continues on Thursday from 12:00 noon until service time at the Church in Bloomfield.

Honorary pallbearers are Ray's grandchildren.

Ray McFarland was born on January 23, 1921, in Bloomfield, NE, to Leroy and Sylvia Pearl (Andrews) McFarland. He grew up in the Bloomfield area and was married to Eileen Wakeley on June 25, 1941, in Ponca, Nebraska. Eileen died on June 26, 2002, at the age of 80 years. Ray and Eileen moved to Kellerton, Iowa, in 1948 and lived there until 1965. He farmed and did custom work in Northeast Nebraska until moving into Randolph in 1985.

Survivors include four children and spouses: Gary and Susan McFarland, Orem, Utah; Dennis and Becky McFarland, Randolph, NE; Joy and Jerry Winkelbauer, Randolph, NE; and Raeleen and Dave Junck, Randolph, NE; 1 daughter-in-law: Marrietta McFarland, Crofton, NE; 19 Grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Cleo and husband Herman Wenke, Salem, Oregon; and Alda Jones, Neligh, NE; 1 sister-in-law: Margaret McFarland, Hartington, NE; and 1 brother: Tom and wife Ardis McFarland, Kalispell, Montana.

He was preceded in death by parents; wife; 1 son, Eldon McFarland; 1 brother, Burt McFarland; 3 sisters: Opal McShannon, Dorothy Sherman and Ellen Driver; and 2 infant sisters.

Lois Souhrada

VERMILLION -- Lois Marilyn Souhrada, 97, of Vermillion died Dec. 13, 2004.
Lois Marilyn Souhrada was born October 1, 1907, to Walter R. and Amy E. (Doran) Glenn at Elk Point, S.D.

The family moved to Sterling, Colorado, for a short time before moving to Tyndall, S.D., in 1909. She graduated from Tyndall High School in 1925. She married John E. Souhrada September 22, 1932. They had one son, Gary Glenn Souhrada. On May 31, 1936, the family moved to Vermillion, where Mr. Souhrada operated the OK Barber Shop for many years.

Lois's husband died in 1978. She moved to Northwood Assisted Living in 1997 and transferred to the Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center in 2000.

Mrs. Souhrada was employed by several Vermillion businesses, including the Vermillion Plain Talk, and was a secretary of the First United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, The Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge, Clay County Historical Society, American Legion Auxiliary, Friends of the W.H. Over Museum and was a 67-year member of the VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by her granddaughter, Judy Nelson Naber and her husband John of Ruthven, IA; he daughter-in-law, Julie Nelson and her husband R. David of Ruthven and their children: Sarah, Catherine and Paul; her sister-in-law Ruth Glenn (Mrs. Robert Glenn) of Salem, OR; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Gary; her grandson, Todd; her husband (John); and three brothers: Ward, Glenn and his wife, Evelyn; Forrest Glenn and is wife, Peggy; and Robert Glenn.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 14, 2004, from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion. Funeral will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Vermillion. Burial will be in Bluffview Cemetery in Vermillion.

Vern McKee

HURON -- Vern McKee, age 74, formerly of Huron, died Friday, December 10, 2004, at the Sioux Valley Hospital at Sioux Falls.
His funeral mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 15, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Huron with Father Donald Imming officiating. Burial will be at St. Martin's Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council.

Friends may call Tuesday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home, Huron, or prior to the Mass at the church Wednesday morning. There will be a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Vern Albert McKee was born in Browns Valley, MN, on April 28, 1930, but primarily raised in Huron, SD, he was an only child. His parents were Lewis "Bud" and Bernita (Deyo) McKee. Vern was an outstanding high school and college athlete. He was an All-Conference basketball player and baseball standout. While in the Navy for 4 years he won an MVP award in basketball and was named to an All Navy team. When he finished his navy tour, the St. Louis Browns and Chicago White Sox offered him contracts, as did the San Francisco 49ers. On September 1, 1954, Vern married Beverly Jean Bischoff in Huron, SD, where he was attending Huron College. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Huron College and went on to get his Master's Degree from the University of SD. Vern then went on to eventually get his principal and superintendent certificate. His public school experience in the state includes: Ipswich, Vermillion, Yankton, Wolsey, Harrold, Hoven, Mitchell, Veblen and Huron. Vern was also the Executive Vice-President and chief spokesman for the South Dakota Association of Commerce and Industry for 7 1/2 years in Pierre. Another 7 1/2 years he was owner and general manager of KSDR radio station in Watertown. He spent two years as a seasonal scout for the Chicago White Sox. Then the Minnesota Twins hired him as a scout and minor league instructor for four years. Vern officiated South Dakota basketball games for 28 years. He worked 16 years in the SDIC and 12 years in the North Central Conference. Five different years he was selected as one of the officials in the State A finals.

Vern is survived by six children: Susan (Brian) Mielke, William (Jen) McKee, Thomas McKee, and Ryan (Laura) McKee, all of Sioux Falls; Diane (Buck) Akin, Redfield; Carol McKee, Minneapolis. He was also blessed with five grandchildren: Shelby Akin of Brookings, Wyatt, Erin, Bevy, and Mason McKee of Sioux Falls.

Vern was preceded in death by his wife Beverly on November 24, 2002, and by his parents.

Helen Machacek

A Mass of Christian Burial for Helen Machacek will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 13, 2004, at St. George Catholic Church, Scotland, South Dakota. Celebrant is Rev. Fr. Mathew Vazhappilly, CMI.

Organist is Martin Sieverding. Ushers are Jim Foley and Dennis Kronaizl. Gift Bearers are Kelsey Pesek, Rachel Pravecek, Jenna Rothschadl and Justin Rothschadl

Casketbearers are Gavin Pravecek, Lambert Pravecek, Mike Pravecek, Keith Rothschadl, Bruce Simek and Earl Sturges

Interment is in St. George Catholic Cemetery, Scotland, South Dakota.

Visitation is from 3:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Sunday, December 12, 2004, at the Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel, Scotland, South Dakota. Wake Service is at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, December 12, 2004, at St. George Catholic Church, Scotland, South Dakota.

Helen A. Machacek was born on October 28, 1920, to Arthur and Ella (Greggerson) Andersen in Loreburn, Saskatchewan, Canada. She came to live in the states as a young girl and attended school in Tyndall. She married Emil Pravecek in Tyndall in 1938. From this union, three children were born: Joan Rothschadl and her husband, Duane, of Tyndall; Robert Pravecek and his wife, Georgianne, of Scotland; and Faye (Pravecek) Burke of Scotland. Emil and Helen farmed in the Tyndall and Scotland areas until 1968, when they moved into Scotland. Emil passed away in 1968. Helen worked for the Scotland Café for several years and also provided childcare in her home for a number of years. She married Leo Machacek in 1970, and he passed away in 1995. Helen enjoyed sewing, baking, crossword puzzles, playing cards, and she loved to go dancing. She was devoted to praying the Rosary daily. Helen died at her home in Scotland on Thursday, December 9, 2004, at the age of 85 years.

In addition to her three children, Helen is survived by six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, three step-great-great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, her parents, her sister and her stepfather.

Clara D. 'Connie' Reed

SIOUX FALLS -- Clara Delma (Connie) Reed, 98, died Friday December 3, 2004, at the Avera Yankton Care Center in Yankton, SD.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 6, at George Boom Funeral Home, Sioux Falls, with interment at the Gayville Cemetery, Gayville, SD, at 4:00 PM.

Visitation began at 2:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Clara Delma Olson was born the daughter of Hans Christian and Dorothea (Simonson) Olson on August 31, 1906 at Gayville, SD. She attended Gayville schools and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. As a young lady, Clara moved to Sioux Falls. She married Lawrence Reed on May 20, 1939, in Sioux City, IA. He preceded her in death on September 22, 1967.

She traveled extensively to many foreign countries and around the United States. She loved to dance, travel, and played with the Senior Citizens Kitchen Band. She was a member of the Senior Citizens; the Golden Age Club, the V.F.W. Auxiliary; and East Side Lutheran Church. Clara was interested in genealogy and assisted in the publication of a history book for the Ole and Marie Braaten family.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Martha Olson, Gayville; many nieces and nephews including Aldine (Warren F.) Mayer, Gayville; and Doreen (Arnold) Larson, Lake Andes, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 9 brothers; and 2 sisters.

Ruth Freng

Ruth A. (Olson) Freng, 91, of Yankton died Tuesday (Dec. 7, 2004) at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Vangen Lutheran Church, Mission Hill, with the Rev. Erika Lehmann officiating.

Burial is in Vangen Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4-9 p.m. Thursday, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, at Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton.

Visitation resumes one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
