LaVerne E. ‘Bud' Caswell

RAPID CITY — LaVerne E. ‘Bud' Caswell, 60, Rapid City, died Monday, July 24, 2000, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Caswell, Rapid City; two sons, Todd Caswell, Las Vegas, and Troy Caswell, Rapid City; his mother, Evelyn Caswell, Rapid City; one sister, Lillian Allgers, Rapid City; two brothers, Bob Caswell, Rapid City, and Joe Caswell, Thief River Falls, Minn.; three grandchildren; and five stepgreat- grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Canyon Lake Methodist Church.

Inurnment will be at Pine Lawn Cemetery.

Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Lorene R. (Rossier) "Beanie" Mitchell

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Lorene R. (Rossier) ‘Beanie' Mitchell, 80, of Wilmington, N.C., died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at her home.

Survivors include three children, Sam T. (Tom) Mitchell V, Nevada, John C. Mitchell, Colorado, and Patricia Lindgren, Virginia.; and one brother, John Rossier, Rapid City.

Martha M. Black Feather-Shorting

PINE RIDGE - Martha M. Black Feather-Shorting, 52, of Pine Ridge, died Monday, July 24, 2000, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

"Sister Martha," as she was known, was born Feb. 8, 1948, at Pine Ridge.

She attended elementary school at Pine Ridge Elementary, Igloo, Brainerd Indian School and Hot Springs, and graduated from high school at Eagle Butte. She later received degrees from Haskell Institute and Piya Winconi College.

Martha worked at various places, including the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Indian Health Services and, most recently, as executive secretary for the president of Oglala Lakota College.

Sister Martha was instrumental, along with family and friends, in traveling to England to bring the bones of her great-grandfather, Long Wolf, back to America for repatriation and burial at Wolf Creek.

She was a very caring and loving person, serving many native communities through her gospel ministry and through her singing of her gospel songs. Sister Martha was called to the ministries at the age of 12 and ordained in Eagle Butte. Her gospel audio tapes are still played on the radio throughout Indian Country in the United States and Canada. Her tapes will continue to help her family and friends to renew their faith in Jesus Christ.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Black Feather; one brother, Raymond Black Feather; two nieces and three nephews.

She is survived by her mother, Jessie Yellow Boy-Black Feather, Pine Ridge; two brothers, John Black Feather, Tempe, Ariz., and Antoine Black Feather, Pine Ridge; two adopted brothers, Edward Cole, Portland, Ore., and Terry Button, Sacaton, Ariz.; six sisters, Estella Rowland, Irma Bad Wound, Mary Condon, Evangeline Fast Horse, Dora Good Plume, Hannah Yellow Boy, all of Pine Ridge; Govonnia Wasicune, Sioux Valley, Manitoba, Canada, and Lillian Sharpfish, Oglala; aunt Phoebe Black Feather, Wolf Creek; and 80 nieces and nephews.

Two-night wake services will begin Thursday, July 27, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Wolf Creek Church Hall, Wolf Creek.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at Wolf Creek Church Hall, with the Rev. Marlin Hunt and the Rev. William Red Bear officiating.

Interment will be at Wolf Creek Community Cemetery in Wolf Creek.

Sioux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James Edward King

STEPHAN - James Edward King, 87, of Stephan, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.

Survivors include one brother, John King, Minden, Nev.; four daughters, Bernice Ellsworth, Stephan, Judith Runestad, Boone, Iowa, Marie Arendt, Valentine, Neb., and Marile Straight, Gregory; two sons, Bill King, St. Michael, N.D., and Jerry King, Faulkton; 25 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at Luze Funeral Home in Highmore; a wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Stephan.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 31, at the church.

Burial will be at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Stephan.

Charlesetta Moe

SPEARFISH - Charlesetta Moe, 95, of Spearfish, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at Dorsett Health Care Facility.

Survivors include three daughters, LaVerne Olson, Presho, Sylvia Mikkelsen, Gregory, and Lucille Cudmore, Spearfish; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, July 28, at Lien Funeral Chapel, Stickney.

Services will be at 2 p.m. CDT Saturday, July 29, at United Methodist Church in Stickney.

Burial will be at White Lake Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lien Funeral Home in Stickney.

Berniece Marie Manning

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. - Berniece Marie Manning, 77, of Apache Junction, formerly of Rapid City, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Mesa Lutheran Hospital in Mesa.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Wise and Donna Dugger, both of Rapid City; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Vonnie Eschenbaum, Sacramento, Calif., and Alice Steinlighter, San Berdino, Calif.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary.

Agnes M. Vlasman

PLANKINTON - Agnes M. Vlasman, 84, Plankinton, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell.

Survivors include four sons, Kenneth Vlasman Sr., Tipton, Iowa, Larry Vlasman, Plankinton, Robert Vlasman, Walden, Colo., and Dale Vlasman, Pukwana; one stepson, Vernon Vlasman, Fulton; three brothers, Glen Wulf, Evergreen, Colo., Lyle Wulf, Rapid City, and Harold Wulf, Chaska, Minn.; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Plankinton.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at the church, with the Rev. Lin Jennewein officiating.

Burial will be in Mizpah Cemetery at Plankinton.

Shearer Funeral Home of Plankinton is in charge of arrangements.

Yukiko Salua Kapuali 'iolilinoe Saballos

RAPID CITY - Yukiko Salua Kapuali 'iolilinoe Saballos, 8-month-old daughter of Natsuki and Lilinoe Saballos of Ellsworth Air Force Base, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

She is survived by her parents; grandmothers Yolanda Jubran of Tempe, Ariz., Helene Iverson of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, great-grandmother Alberta Eddelbuttell of Kailua-Kona; two aunts, Salua Jubran of Tempe, Melanie Lessett of Kailua-Kona; three uncles, Hassan Jubran of Tempe, Francis Lessett and John Mendes, both of Kailua-Kona, and her extended family and friends.

Visitation will be at Rooks & Kirk Funeral Home, 1051 E. Minnesota St., in Rapid City on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and at the church on Friday before the services.

Services are set for 10 a.m. Friday, July 28, 2000, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2822 Canyon Lake Drive in Rapid City, with Bishop Alden Hilton officiating. Interment will follow in the infant section of Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.

Gladys Adams

RAPID CITY - Gladys Adams, 75, Rapid City, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include one son, Ron Cline; four daughters, Margaret Thompson, Linda Sharp, Robyn Adams, and Anne Adams; three brothers, Vernon Callahan, Bob Callahan and Pete Callahan.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at United Methodist Church in Sturgis with the Rev. Frank McKeehan officiating.

Arrangements are with Carlsen-Jolley Funeral Home in Sturgis.

Thomas V. Niederman

MORRISTOWN - Funeral services for Thomas Niederman, 79, Morristown, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at Prince of Peace Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.

Visitation will be today from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and for one hour before the service on Sunday. Pastors Al Anderson and Kent Knight will officiate.

Interment will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 31, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Mr. Niederman passed away the morning of July 26 at West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, N.D.

Thomas Valentine Niederman was born Dec. 11, 1920, to Joseph and Anna (Hartinger) Niederman on their farm in Grant County, N.D. He attended grade school at Park Rural School and in Morristown, graduating from Elgin (N.D.) High School in 1939. He then attended American Technical Business College in Chicago, receiving a diploma in accounting. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in December 1942 and was assigned to the 229th combat engineer battalion of the Pennsylvania 28th Infantry Division and served in the European theater. He was involved in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 and honorably discharged in January 1946.

Tom then was employed as a construction foreman for a concrete company in the Bismarck, N.D., area. He later helped his brother operate the Morristown cafe for a year and managed the O & M Grain Elevator from 1949 to 1953. He took the civil-service examination, and he was selected to serve as postmaster at Morristown in February 1955 and held that position until retiring in January 1988.

He was united in marriage to Mary Bail on Nov. 9, 1950, at Lemmon, and they raised their two daughters in Morristown.

Tom enjoyed civic work and served as clerk for the town of Morristown, on the fire department, the PTA of Morristown school, and he served 11 years on the McIntosh School Board, two years as president. He was actively involved in the South Dakota Chapter of National Postmasters of the U.S., serving as president and vice president of the chapter in 1969. He was selected as a member of the Kentucky Colonels Honor Society, an honor he held until his death. Tom was also selected as an honorary South Dakota gentleman by former Gov. Richard Kneip. He was an active member of Smith-Lyman American Post 279 and held several offices, including post commander and legion adjutant.

He also enjoyed baseball, fishing, working with cattle, cooking, studying history and studying maps for many road trips. He loved to visit and made friends with all he met during his travels.

Tom is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Carol Niederman, Santa Rosa, Calif., and Karen Cooper, Rapid City; four grandchildren; one sister, Ella Braun, McIntosh; and one brother, Wesley Niederman, Elgin, N.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Edward, of Rapid City and sister, Matilda, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Raymond Stroh

MOBRIDGE - Raymond Stroh, 68, of Mobridge, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Mobridge Regional Hospital.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge.

Burial of his cremains will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, at Fort Snelling Veterans Cemetery in Minneapolis.
