Elaine Meyer

VERMILLION -- Elaine E. Meyer, 89, retired professor of Library Science at the University of South Dakota, died at the Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center on Friday, Dec. 3, 2004.

Miss Meyer, the second of nine children, was born May 3, 1915, in Beadle Co. near Bonilla, SD to Mildred (Borah) and John C. Meyer. Following her education in country schools, Bonilla High School, and her graduation Magna Cum Laude from Huron College in 1938, Miss Meyer had a 15 year career as a mathematics and science teacher in Ideal, Highmore, Vermillion and Lemmon, SD. In 1953, she received an award from the S.D. High School Press Association for distinguished service in the field of high school journalism.

In 1953, she embarked on a second career, earned her MA degree in Library Science at the University of Denver, and held high school library positions at Los Alamos, NM and at Lead, SD and became Reference Librarian and Professor of Library Media at the University of South Dakota. She was a key figure in developing the Library Media program at the University. Elaine retired in 1978.

She has held memberships in the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Library Association, the S.D. Library Association, Delta Kappa Gamma International and the Friends of the Vermillion Public Library. In 1985, she was the first recipient of the Friend of the School Library/Media Center award presented by the South Dakota Library Association. This honor was followed in 2000 when the American Library Association added her name to its National Honor Roll of Librarians whose work strengthened library service in the 20th Century.

Miss Meyer is survived by an adopted sister, and long-time friend, Edith Siegrist with whom she made her home for 44 years in Vermillion; three brothers: Harlan (Inez) Meyer of Sioux Falls, SD, Dr. Norman (Miriam) Meyer of San Miguel d' Allende, Mexico and Kerwin (Marjorie) Meyer of Sioux City, IA; and a sister, Caryl Lynn (Calvin) Poppen of DeSmet, SD. She is also survived by 21 nieces and nephews, and was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: Camden and Durward; and two sisters: Leora Rearick and Lorna Poppen.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the United Church of Christ in Vermillion with visitation starting one hour prior at the church. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Bonilla Cemetery in Bonilla, SD.

The Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion is handling the arrangements.

Rosemary Feilmeier

HARTINGTON, Neb. -- Rosemary C. Feilmeier, age 73, of Hartington, NE died unexpectantly at her residence on Sunday, December 05, 2004.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, December 9, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with Rev. John Pietramale officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Hartington.

Visitation will be on Wednesday December 8, 2004, from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 2:00 p.m., a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. and a rosary at 8:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Tongish, Kyle Feilmeier, Anthony Knox, Scott Harrison, Lee Vondrak, Joseph Martin and Brian Mogren.

Rosemary was born on May 26, 1931, at Bow Valley, Nebraska to Anton and Eleanor (Kathol) Noecker. She grew up in Hartington and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1949. She married John L. Feilmeier Jr. on November 13, 1951, in Hartington. He died on February 23, 1997. They lived in California from 1952 to 1954 and then returned to Hartington and lived there until moving to Sioux City, Iowa in 1962. She worked at Buchanan Drugstore in Hartington for 5 years. They lived in Sioux City, Iowa from 1962 to 1994 and then moved back to Hartington. After John's death, Rosemary lived in Sioux City for several years until returning to Hartington. She loved to sew, travel, dance, and enjoyed life. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington.

She is survived by one son and his wife, Gary and Marie Feilmeier, Commerce, Georgia; six daughters and their husbands: Cheryl and Steven Tongish, Dakota City, NE, Audrey and Carl Martin, Hubbard, NE, Deanna and Dave Earley, Jean and Shawn Knox, Lori and Steven Vondrak and Barb and Brian Nyreen, all of Sioux City. There are 24 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers and their wives, Marvin and Teresa Noecker, Hartington, Leon and Lorna Noecker, Garden Grove, Iowa, and Larry and Carol Noecker, Yankton; and three sisters: Leora Hedburg, Rockford, Illinois, Doris Folkers, Hartington and Delores and Bob Lammers, Randolph, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one granddaughter, Jennifer Tongish.

Robert Hora

OLIVET -- Robert Keith Hora, age 74, of Olivet, SD, died Thursday evening, November 18, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital Hospice in Sioux Falls following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 22, 2004, at the United Methodist Church, Olivet, with Rev. Mary Lee Lint officiating. Burial will be in Wittenberg Cemetery, rural Olivet, SD.

Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday, November 21, 2004, at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno. A prayer service will be at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Olivet. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Robert Hora was born on March 7, 1930, to Frank J. & Julia (Novak) Hora at rural Olivet, SD. Following graduation from Marion High School in 1948, he worked on a farm until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in the fall of 1951. He received his basic training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, after which he then served in Korea from 1952-53.

Robert married Twyla Groen on April 17, 1952, at Olivet. After he returned from the service in 1953, the couple began farming in the Wittenberg community where they farmed for over 50 years until his death. Four sons were born to this couple: James, Darrell, Dale and Curtis.

Robert, better known as Bob, was a faithful member of the Olivet United Methodist Church where he served in various capacities. He especially enjoyed teaching the adult Sunday School class. Bob served on the Menno school board for four years and was a 4-H leader for 15 years. He also was a dealer for Pioneer Hi-Bred seed for 14 years. Growing sweet corn to share with others was a great joy to him.

He is survived by his wife, Twyla, of Olivet; his four sons and their spouses: James (Karla) of Parkston; Darrell (Joanne) of Menno; Dale (Peggy) of Olivet; and Curtis (Eileen) of Viborg; eight grandchildren: Justin, Megan, Jason, Eric, Joyce, Joshua, Andrew and Abby; two sisters: Agnes Gran, Irene, and Dorothy Murra, Sioux Falls; one brother, Leighton of Canistota; and many relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters: Reva Groen and infant Mary Ann; and two brothers, Vincent and Franke.

Warren Hoffman

BLOOMFIELD, Neb. -- Warren O. Hoffman, 84, of Bloomfield, Neb., died Wednesday (Dec. 1, 2004) at the Bloomfield Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services are 9:30 a.m. Saturday at First Trinity Lutheran Church, Bloomfield, with the Rev. Fahr officiating.

Graveside services are 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Battle Creek, Neb., with the Rev. Gary Trowbridge officiating.

Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. today (Friday) at the Brockhaus Funeral Home, Bloomfield.

Carl Walz

VERMILLION -- Carl Walz, 92, of Vermillion died Thursday, Dec. 2, at the Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center.

Carl was born Sept. 23, 1912, in Vermillion, SD to Andrew and Agnes (Nicholson) Walz. Carl attended the Vermillion area schools, and married Dorothy Christopherson on Dec. 24, 1932, in Vermillion. Carl and Dorothy lived on several Clay Co. farms until their retirement in 1976. They retired to their home in Vermillion, and spent their winters in Arizona for about 30 years. In 2001, they moved into the assisted living in Vermillion, and in 2003 into the care center.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Vermillion; six sons: Melvin, Marvin (Carol) and Jerry (Linda), all of Vermillion; Roger (Avis) of Alcester, SD; Alan (Bertha) of Centerville, SD; and Don (Andrea) of Sioux Falls, SD; three daughters: Janet (Dave) Macy of Vermillion; Janice (Monte) Hartung of Sioux Falls; and Janell (Steve) Manning of Tucson, AZ. He is also survived by two sisters: Fern Ostrem of Centerville; and Margaret Peterson of Wickenburg, AZ; a sister-in-law, Pearl Walz of Sioux City, IA; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Henry, Arnold, and Burdette; and two sisters: Evelyn Ahlgrim and Phyllis Melcher.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion, with burial to follow in the Bluffview Cemetery in Vermillion.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion.

Donald Anthony Reecy, son of Joseph and Loretta (Even) Reecy, was born September 1, 1930 at Humboldt, SD. He grew up there and attended Humboldt Sister’s School. The family moved first to Brandt, SD, and then to Clear Lake, SD. He worked at the Clear Lake Dairy for several years. Before moving to Sioux Falls in 1950.

Don was united in marriage with Marlys Helen Stickle on February 2, 1953 at Clear Lake, SD. They settled in Sioux Falls where he began his career with H-S Price Co./Rusco Windows. He worked there until his retirement in 1992 after 40 years of service. In 1993, he began working part-time providing public fingerprinting for immigration and background checks. In 1997, due to the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, his activities were limited and he was cared for by his wife, Marlys, until August of 2001 when he entered Southridge Healthcare Center.

Don was a longtime member of St. Lambert’s Catholic Church, the Moose Lodge, B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge, Pheasants Forever, and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and farming.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Marlys Reecy, Sioux Falls, SD; a son, Steven Reecy and his wife, Sandra, Sioux Falls, SD; a daughter, Jacqueline Reecy, St. Louis Park, MN; one grandchild, Rolf Woelber; a brother, Eugene Reecy and his wife, Agnes, Edgemont, SD; and among numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Gerald Reecy; and one grandson, Joseph Woelber.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ronald Dean Matthaei, son of Ralph and Ramona (Bruining) Matthaei, was born October 18, 1960 in Waukegan, IL. As a child he moved with his family to Sioux Falls, SD. He graduated from Washington High School in 1978. He graduated from Southeast Area Vocational-Technical Institute in 1980.

Ron worked for several years at Novak Sanitation. He later moved to Valley Springs, SD. He then worked for Luverne Truck Equipment. Ron enjoyed playing in pool and dart leagues, three wheeling, mechanical work and spending time with family and friends.

Grateful for having shared his life are his companion, Bonnie Burr; his daughters, Roschelle Matthaei, Valley Springs, SD, BreAnn King, Valley Springs, SD; his parents, Ralph and Ramona Matthaei, Sioux Falls, SD; his sister, Rita Novak and her husband, Mark, Lennox, SD; his brother, Randy Matthaei and his girlfriend, Amber Rotio, Sioux Falls, SD; his grandmother, Mildred Bruining, Sioux Falls, SD; his nephew, Anthony Matthaei, Gilchrist, TX; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Carol Fay Otelle, daughter of Lester Wayne and Cecelia Katherine (Malloy) Otelle, was born April 3, 1939 in Sioux Falls, SD. She graduated from Washington High School in 1957 and then attended Stewart’s School of Hairstyling in Sioux Falls.

Carol was united in marriage with Dwane “Wally” Johnson on March 24, 1958 in Sioux Falls. After their marriage the couple lived in Sioux Falls where Carol owned and operated Carol’s Salon of Beauty from their home. They moved to an acreage near Shindler, SD in the fall of 1973.

Carol passed away after a 14 month battle with lung cancer on May 22, 2002 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Carol had many interests but especially enjoyed being with her friends and family, her home near Shindler, vegetable gardening, and propagating plants.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Wally Johnson, Sioux Falls, SD; her daughter, Cindy Cramer and her husband, Russ, Larkspur, CO; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at George Boom Funeral Home following the committal service.
