Stanley H. Wilkinson

September 1, 1931 - April 2, 2011

Stanley Harvey Wilkinson was born on September 1, 1931 to Harvey and Lydia (Smith) Wilkinson at their homestead along the Big Nasty Creek. Harvey passed away when Stan was five, leaving Lydia a widow to raise her eight young children. They had lost their home place at Glendo during the "Dirty Thirties" due to taxes and inability to pay off a loan. The older children worked away from home to help pay off the debt. In 1939 they moved back to Glendo. Stan remembered walking behind the cows as they were moving back.
As the older children left home, Stan and Harold had to be the "men" of the family even though they were in their early teens. They worked hard, but also knew how to enjoy life. Stan enjoyed playing his guitar and singing with family and friends. In later years he enjoyed getting together with neighbors and holding music parties, and also playing cards.
Stan always worked hard and loved being with is kids and grandkids. Working with animals was a joy to him, and he liked his "John Deere's". Since Stan's health started failing, Jim and his family have pretty much been running the ranch. A trip to Rochester did not give the results Stan had hoped for.
Stan's heart just played out, and he passed away on April 2, 2011.
When he was in his early twenties, Stan bought a truck and hauled gravel for Perkins County until he entered the US Army in 1954. He spent 18 months in Hawaii as a cook, and spent many hours on the beach during time off. Upon returning home in 1956 he went back to hauling gravel. On June 18, 1960 he married Patsy Papka. They lived in an 8x30 trailer home and moved it around to many different graveling jobs. In 1964 they bought the Sam and Alice Steuer place. Stan continued to haul gravel while Patsy and the kids stayed home to tend to the ranch, and Harold helped with the farming. In 1969 they bought the Cliff Stolt place, and that ended the graveling. Cattle and sheep kept them busy at home. Stan enjoyed auction sales and pitching horseshoes.
Survivors include his wife Patsy Wilkinson, Prairie City; son James (Vicki) Wilkinson, Reva; daughters, Tammy (Larry) Eberhard, Belle Fourche; Marilyn (Bill) Steinmeyer, Merriman, NE; grandsons, Kent and Kyle Wilkinson and Chance Steinmeyer; one brother, Harold (Esther) Wilkinson, Frazee, MN; sisters, Violet Krambeer, Buffalo, SD, Bessie Campbell, Mesa, AZ; sister in law, Alice Wilkinson, Buffalo, SD; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Lydia Wilkinson, one brother, Glen Wilkinson, and three sisters, Dorthy Spangler, Lila White and Daisy Wilkinson.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday April 9, 2011 at the Reva Hall with Pastor Henry Mohagen officiating.
Memorials have been established to the Slim Buttes Lutheran Church Radio Broadcast Fund and the American Heart Association.

David John Allison

July 30, 1957 - March 29, 2011

Mass of a Christian burial for David John Allison, 53, will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at St. Francis of Assisi Church with Father Arnold Karri officiating, a rosary wake will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday evening at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Inurnment will be in the St. Aloysius Cemetery in Sturgis under the direction of Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
David John Allison, known by most as Dave, was born on July 30, 1957 in Deadwood, SD to Vernon and Dorothy (Soldat) Allison. Dave passed away of a heart attack on March 29, 2011 in Waynesville, NC.
Dave graduated from Sturgis High School in 1975 and attended college at Northern State College and Black Hills State University. He married Sharon Hanzlik, Oct. 8, 1977 and to this union three children were born.
Dave was a perfectionist, workaholic and a master of his trade. He was passionate about every intricacy that went into media publications. As a child when he wasn’t golfing he helped his dad in the pressroom. Dave spent 37 years in that field and headed the demanding operation at Allison Publishing, a multi-newspaper company and web printing central plant for the majority of his life. He later headed the printing department at the Rapid City Journal.
Ironically, he was interviewed last month about his career and changes in that industry by the staff of The Mountaineer (Waynesville, NC) where he headed its printing operations. “I still love them (newspapers). I always have, ever since I first set foot in a pressroom,” he was quoted as saying, “There is nothing like the smell of a press room.”
“I’ve never been afraid to get ink on my hands,” he said. Allison admitted that he doesn’t know what his future will hold. In his opinion, local papers will keep going because they “must.” Newspapers tell the stories that often television and internet news sites won’t. Newspapers tell the stories that matter most to those who live them but will never make national news. In his words, “People need the local news. I believe the local paper will withstand any change in the economy,” he said, with a sad smile on his face and conviction in his voice.
He was passionate about his favorite hobbies: golf and music. In high school he participated in debate and many sports. But, he was a master on the golf course. He was a member of at least one Sturgis State Championship Team and was a state medalist. His love for golf was life-long and he won many first flight tournaments. He loved the fact he could play golf year-round in North Carolina and enjoyed teaching his children the sport.
Dave was one of Pink Floyd’s most loyal fans. He took his family to concerts across the United States; collected a plethora of memorabilia, and was most comfortable in his Pink Floyd shirt and cap. Dave has now gone to the Greatest Gig in the Sky.
Dave was very active in the Deadwood Elks Lodge #508, held many offices and served as its Exalted Ruler. He also won several Elks state and national competitions.
But his crown jewels were his children. He was an exceptional father and we will miss his guidance. He is survived by his son, Christopher (Tracy) Allison of Broadlands, VA; and daughter, Amie Allison, and her husband Shawn Hise of Brooklyn Park, MN; his son, Joshua died when he was born in 1987. He is also survived by his brother, Jim (Jackie) Allison, and sister, Doreen Allison Creed, both of Sturgis; several nieces and nephews; and his former wife of 30 years, Sharon Allison of Sturgis, although divorced, remained very close.
A memorial has been established to St. Aloysius Cemetery.

Donald J. Lindstrom

February 18, 1926 - March 17, 2011

Donald J. Lindstrom, 85, of Spearfish, SD, passed away on March 17, 2011, after a brief struggle with colon cancer. Mourning his loss is his immediate family: Jackie Lindstrom, the love of his life, to whom he was married for 60 years; his son, John (affectionately called "Q"), captain with Delta Airlines and cherished bingo-caller at the Whitewood Senior Center; his daughter-in-law and buddy, Brenda, keeper of the Q's homestead in Whitewood; his other son, David, who lives and ministers in Chicago's African American and Latino neighborhoods; and granddaughter, Vanessa, who lives in Milwaukee and teaches in economically deprived, African American school districts.
Don proudly served in the Navy in the South Pacific, in WWII. His family was his pride and joy. And being Swedish, coffee flowed in his veins. Of those folks we know who make their family, friends, and guests comfortable and happy, no matter the personal sacrifice, Don set the standard.
Jackie and Don supported one another in their creativity as artists, their love of country dance, Don's interests in antiques, Jackie's passion for horses and writing. Creativity has defined Don and Jackie's lives, whether building a ranch in Minnesota, training and showing horses, or planning and hosting the wonderful yearly "Easter Bash" for family and friends.
Nine years ago, Don and Jackie, along with Q and Brenda, pulled-up roots and moved from Minneapolis to the Black Hills. This provided a magnificent experience for them all. To hear Don describe it, one might wonder whether the Bible had it right – maybe the Garden of Eden was in South Dakota. They joined the First Presbyterian Church of Whitewood, SD, and have experienced the meaning of "family" in ways never imagined. Pastor Steve Agan, his wife, Janell, and the folks in the church continue to be a source of love and strength. While the countless folks who have cared deeply for the Lindstroms can't be named here, Don would at least want to call out a special mention for their good friends, Stan and Sharon Holsclaw.
How do we remember Don? Through the expressions of children who watched him in parades as an Aqua Jesters clown, or for Halloween, as Uncle Fester; or as he made their scribbles on paper come alive; or as they examined Don's bowed legs and cowboy hat, asking, "Are you a real cowboy?" We saw his face glow as he country-danced with Jackie, or told you the stories of his antique toys that he had restored, or as he panned for gold, or as he worked at his lottery scratch-and-play, exclaiming, "I won a dollar!" We see him searching for relics with metal-detectors, with Stan; or coming up from the valley, sweating, full of mosquito bites, after cutting eternally growing weeds that shorted the electric fences for the horses. We remember him teaching his kids to fish on Forest Lake and stopping for cinnamon toast at his favorite restaurant; or painting clouds on the ceiling and walls of his niece, Alison's baby's room – his perfection rivaling that of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. Mention, "Deadwood," and he had his boots on, waiting to take on those slot machines – at 4 a.m., he and Brenda were just warming up. We have images of him caked with snow while plowing the drive during blizzards, or lost in piles of artifacts at the High Plains Western Heritage Center, researching and cataloging, displaying his paintings, contributing art exhibits – if you haven't yet seen the "Lindstrom Mine Shaft," you need to. We remember how he played with the family dog, Pickett, and how he cried at the deaths of so many dogs. We hear him saying, "I love you," to his granddaughter, or yelling, "Jackie! Where did you put the jelly?! …David's phone number?! … my glasses?!..." – whatever it was, it was always in arm's reach. We feel his excitement for breakfasts with friends from the Whitewood church after the service. We look through his sketch books and envision him scribbling ink drawings, and from them, creating works of art that expressed his burning desire to tell the world to slow down and to enjoy the simple wonder that is all around.
Husband, dad, grandpa, uncle, friend. You'll never leave our hearts.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 25, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Whitewood with Pastor Steve Agan and Rev. Howard "Skip" Smith officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the First Presbyterian Church of Whitewood and to Hospice of the Northern Hills.
