Leroy Moe

VERMILLION -- Leroy W. Moe, 77, Vermillion, died Friday (Nov. 22, 2002) at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Memorial service is 2 p.m. Monday at the Hansen Funeral Home, Vermillion. Burial of ashes is in the Bluffview Cemetery, Vermillion.

He was born March 2, 1925, on a farm near Carthage, to Jacob and Marie (Wesselsen) Moe. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served from 1943-46 in the South Pacific. He worked construction in Sioux Falls, first with his late brother Lester, and then forming his own plastering business. He moved to the Vermillion area in 1974, and finally to the Town Square apartments where he and his wife, Ila, have been the manager since 1998.

He was a member of the Vermillion VFW and Southeast South Dakota Pheasant Association.

He is survived by his wife, Ila of 33 years; six sons: Troy Moe, Vermillion; Shawn (Lanette) Moe, Homer, Neb.; and Delvin Amundson, Vermillion; and Jeff, Gary and Randy Moe; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Norman, Olympia, Wash.; and four sisters: Margaret Passer, Pinellas Park, Fla.; Mabelle Fulton, Carthage; Genevieve Doland, Huron; and Gladys Tracy, Ventura, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and three sisters.

Andrew Wilson

BLOOMFIELD, Neb. -- Andrew Jacob Wilson, 9, Bloomfield, Neb., died Wednesday (Nov. 27, 2002) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral services were held Monday at First Trinity Lutheran Church, Bloomfield, with the Revs. Gary Trowbridge and Dan Gifford officiating. Burial was in the Bloomfield Cemetery.

The Brockhaus Funeral Home, Bloomfield, was in charge of arrangements.

He was born May 10, 1993, at Yankton to Carson and Dawn (Bargman) Wilson. He attended Bloomfield Community School. He was a member of First Trinity Lutheran Church and was baptized June 5, 1993.

He enjoyed playing football and baseball, his Pokemon collection and spending time with friends.

He is survived by his parents; one sister, Cailee; one brother, Alec; his grandparents: Jean Bargman, Robert and Joy Wilson; his great-grandparents: Earl Bargman and Opal Whitney; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, six great-grandparents and one cousin.

Mary Daily

ELK POINT -- Mary M. Daily, 95, Elk Point, died Thursday (Nov. 21, 2002) at Prairie Estates Nursing Home, Elk Point.

Service is 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Parish Church, Elk Point, with the Rev. Dan Lozer officiating. Burial is in the Elk Point Cemetery.

Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Anderson-Siecke Funeral Home, Elk Point.

She was born March 2, 1907, at Alcester, to Peter and Maria (Richter) Jacobs. The family moved to Hawarden, Iowa, when she was young. She graduated from Hawarden School in 1926. She taught at Sioux County, Iowa, rural schools for six years. She married Lloyd Daily Aug. 15, 1936. The couple farmed near Jefferson for a number of years. They moved into Elk Point in 1972. She was employed by Renfro Variety and Union County Courthouse for a number of years. Her husband died in 1978.

She was a member of the United Parish, Elk Point.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews and one sister-in-law, Eleanor Jacobs, Sioux Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister and two brothers.

Eileen Malin

VIBORG -- Eileen Malin, 65, Viborg, died Wednesday (Nov. 20, 2002) at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home, Viborg.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Boniface-Idylwilde Catholic Church, rural Freeman. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Visitation is from 1-5 p.m. Sunday with a 7 p.m. rosary and Scripture service at the Viborg Funeral Home.

She was born Dec. 1, 1936, at New York City, to Harry and Martha Connors. She married Chet Malin Sept. 3, 1955. They lived at Long Island, N.Y., until moving to Viborg in 1999.

She is survived by her husband, Chet, Viborg; one son, Gregory, Viborg; three daughters: Dale Cush of New York; Donna Jean (Bill) Manning of New Jersey; and Jill (John) Gemelli of New York; five grandchildren; and two brothers: Henry Connors of Florida; and Mike Connors of New Jersey.

Adolph Slama

TYNDALL -- Adolph Vincent Slama, 91, Tyndall, died Monday (Nov. 25, 2002) at St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall.

Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. (CT) Friday at the Tyndall Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Greg Way officiating. Burial is 1:30 p.m. (MT) Saturday, at Pine Lawn Cemetery, Rapid City.

Pallbearers are David Peterson, Christopher Ekholm, Brooks Slama, James Slama, Daniel Peterson, Andrew Slama and Jordan Slama.

Visitation is from 9-11:30 a.m. Friday at the Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel, Tyndall, and one hour prior to services at the church.

He was born on Aug. 11, 1911, to Adolph and Rose (Uherka) Slama at rural Tabor. He married Martha Petrik Nov. 1, 1938, at Country Presbyterian Church, Tabor. They farmed south of Tyndall for many years. During the time they lived in Rapid City, he worked as the custodian of his church. He became a resident of the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center in December 2001.

He is survived by one son, David (Iris) Slama, Rapid City; three daughters: Judie Ekholm, Hillsboro Beach, Fla.; Connie Slama, Rapid City; and Verna Peterson, Norfolk, Neb.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward Slama, Tyndall; and two sisters: Viola Pesek, Tyndall; and Evelyn Stibral, Yankton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Elsie Miller

Elsie Miller, 104, Yankton, died Sunday (Dec. 1, 2002) at the Yankton Care Center.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Watertown, with the Rev. Dick Fylling officiating. Burial is in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Don Miller, Rick Rohl, Frank Fryer, Don Wetrich, Albert Dutcher and Richard Vaughan.

Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Sogn-Messner Funeral Home, Watertown. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

She was born Jan. 19, 1898, at Wyoming, Iowa, to Thomas J. and Martha E. (Levsen) Hinrichsen. She grew up on a farm and attended school near Troy. She married Earl J. Miller in Colorado Springs, Colo., Nov, 10, 1920. They farmed near Troy for 38 years and moved to Watertown in 1958. Her husband died Sept. 4, 1982, and she moved to Yankton in 1986 to be near her son.

She enjoyed bowling, gardening and spending time with her family. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Watertown.

She is survived by one son, Vane (Mary) Miller, Yankton; two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dora Tybora, Winona, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, one son-in-law, two sisters and one brother.

Viola Pelton

AVON -- Viola Pelton, 93, Avon, died Monday (Dec. 2, 2002) at the Good Samaritan Center, Wagner.

Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Avon. Burial is in the church Cemetery, rural Avon.

Visitation is from 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, and from 10 a.m.-noon Thursday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel, Avon.

Helen Swatek

WAGNER -- Helen Swatek, 96, Wagner, formerly of Tyndall, died Friday (Nov. 29, 2002) at Wagner Community Memorial Hospital .

Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Tyndall, with Msgr. Carlton Hermann officiating. Burial is in the church Cemetery, Tyndall.

Pallbearers are Charles Bares, Jerry Kreber, Mark Mikolash, Robert Rothschadl, Dave Vavruska and Rusty Williams.

Visitation is from 1-5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel, Tyndall. Wake service is 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church, Tyndall.

She was born on June 4, 1906, at Pleasant Hill, Neb., to John H. and Rose (Sefranek) Chyba. She graduated from Tyndall High School and Southern State Teacher's College at Springfield, with a certificate in elementary education. She taught 43 years in the rural schools of Bon Homme County and five years as a special education aide. She married Emil Swatek July 30, 1929, at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Tyndall. They farmed in Bon Homme County until her husband retired and they moved into Tyndall. Her husband died in January 1974.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary for 25 years, and held the offices of president, vice president, guard, historian and patriotic instructor. She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church in Tyndall and St. Leo's Altar Society. She sang for many years in the choirs of both St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor and St. Leo's Catholic Church. She was a member of the Tyndall Sokol Club. She taught the Beseda (Czech National Dance) in Tyndall and was active in the square dance club for teenagers and adults. She was an active member of the Tyndall Senior Citizen's for many years.

She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie (Alfred) Novotny, Tyndall; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Agnes Hajek, Tyndall; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son and an infant grandchild.

Ethel Goodburn

Ethel Goodburn, 97, Yankton, died Wednesday (Nov. 27, 2002) at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton, with the Rev. O.K. Anderson officiating. Burial is in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton.

Pallbearers are Gaylen Demarest, Dick Fossum, Gregg Fossum, Gary Goodburn, Clayton Lee and Bob List.

Visitation is from 1-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) with the family present from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton.

She was born Dec. 26, 1904, at Volin to Ole and Marie (Munkvold) Lee. She attended school at Volin and Augustana College, Sioux Falls. She then taught in rural schools at Arlington, at the Bruget School in the Volin area and at Volin schools. She married Norris "Red" Goodburn Aug. 12, 1930, at Volin. They lived in Yankton until moving to the Mayfield Township in 1952. In 1956, they returned to Yankton. Her husband died in 1963. She had resided at the Avera Sister James Care Center since 1998.

She was active in church activities at Trinity Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday School, participated in various ladies organizations and knitted sweaters for children overseas.

She is survived by two sons: Lee (Claragene) Goodburn, Pueblo, Colo.; and Paul (Arlene) Goodburn, McMurray, Pa.; one daughter-in-law, Carole Goodburn, Middle Town, R.I.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, one grandson, three sisters and four brothers.
