Marshall J. Goddard

September 20, 1944 - July 3, 2011

Marshall J. Goddard, age 66, passed away July 3, 2011, at home with his family by his side.
Visitation will be Thursday from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel, Sturgis SD, with the family present from 7:00 PM to 9 PM.
Funeral Services will be held at the Sturgis Church of Christ on Friday July 8th, 2011 at 10:00 AM.
Marshall was born September 20, 1944 in Hettinger, ND to Forrest and Anna (Verhulst) Goddard. Marshall graduated from Hettinger High School in 1962 and went on to attend Black Hills State Teachers College where he met his wife Lavina (Lushbough). Marshall and Lavina were married February 13, 1965 in Sturgis, SD. Marshall spent several years teaching rural school in Perkins and Haakon County before moving on to his Uncle Roy Goddard's ranch where he lived out his lifelong dream of ranching. In 1982 he was added to the Lord's church. In 2008, Marshall retired from ranching and renewed his passion for fishing with his family and long time friend Verne Anders.
Marshall was a loving husband, father, grandpa and cherished son, brother, uncle and friend who will be greatly missed by all those who shared his life.
Marshall was preceded in death by his father, Forrest Goddard, an infant brother, and an infant grandson.
Survivors include his wife Lavina, Sturgis; one son Todd (Janelle) Goddard, Prairie City, SD; one daughter, Tammy Derschan, Sioux Falls; his mother, Anna Goddard, Sturgis; brothers, Tom (Betty) Goddard, Prairie City, Monte (Tarrie) Goddard, Sturgis; sister Gerie (Don) Ericson, Sturgis;and four grandchildren, Ashleigh, Roy, Chandler and Broox and numerous nephews and nieces.
A memorial has been established to the House of Compassion, Rochester MN.

Frances Katherine Baker

June 10, 1914 - July 1, 2011

Frances Katherine Baker, age 97, Sturgis, died Friday, July 1, 2011, at the Sturgis Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a vigil beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday July 5, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Aloysius cemetery.
Frances was born June 10, 1914, in Tipton, Missouri, to Charles and Philomene (Bestgen) Baker. In 1918, the family moved to a ranch north of Sturgis where she grew up.
She graduated from Lead High School and went on to earn a B. S. degree from Black Hills State University, later completing work for a Masters Degree in education from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Her teaching career began in Meade County, SD schools in 1939, continuing there for seven years before taking a position in District U-46 public schools in Elgin, Illinois in 1947. There she remained teaching mainly in junior high level for another 28 years.
In addition to her professional career, she gave service to her church and community. She taught classes in the religious education programs for many years. She was a member of the parish women's organization, serving as president for two terms; she was past regent of Court Elgin, Catholic Daughters of America, and served on the parish council of St. Joseph Church. She was also a member and held office in the Rockford, Illinois Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, which in 1965, honored her with the Catholic Woman of the Year award for significant contributions to church and community.
During these years she was active in the Elgin League of Women Voters, Church Women United and the Elgin Community Theatre.
After retirement, she enjoyed years of travel in Europe, Central America, Mexico, and the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. During this time, in 1981, she returned to Sturgis to make her home.
She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Altar Society, the Hillsview Highrise Tenants Association serving as a board member for 18 years, Sturgis City Library board member for several years, and Illinois Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include sister Clarine Harker, Whitefish, MT; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her twin sister, Florence Haugen; sisters, Virginia Weiers and Marie Frey; and three brothers, Arnold, Leo, and Carl.
A memorial has been established to the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Cyrus Wright

November 22, 1942 - June 30, 2011

Cyrus Willard Wright, 68, Rapid City, died Thursday, June 30, 2011, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 5th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with the family present at 6:00pm.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Donny Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.
Cyrus was born November 22, 1942, at Hyannis, NE, to James and Maude (Davis) Wright. He grew up in Hyannis and graduated from Hyannis High School. Cyrus served in Vietnam in the US Army from 1964 until his honorable discharge in 1966.
He returned to Hyannis where he married Louise Joanne Steggall in 1967. Cyrus and Joanne lived in Hyannis until 1972 when they moved to Wyoming. They moved back to Nebraska before moving to South Dakota in 1985.
Cyrus worked in many fields throughout the years. He was a carpenter, a mechanic, a musician, a police officer, and a heavy equipment operator. There was no job he couldn't handle.
Cyrus was a member of the Catholic Church, the VFW and the Hermosa Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne Wright, Rapid City; two sons, Brian Wright, Springfield, SD, and Kevin Wright, Rapid City; one daughter, Brenda (Mitch) Northrup, Rapid City; one brother, Jim Wright, Hyannis, NE; two sisters, Therldine Williams, Pocahontas, IA, and Sharlene Jenkins, Ansley, NE; and ten grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, and his father-in-law.
A memorial has been established to the Hermosa Volunteer Fire Department.

Merrill "Sonny" Hohenberger

August 23, 1920 - June 28, 2011

Merrill K. "Sonny" Hohenberger, 90, Newell, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011, near his home in Newell.
Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6th at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 7, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
Sonny was born August 23, 1920, at Belle Fourche. His family homesteaded north of Stoneville. Sonny was raised on the family ranch. Following graduation from high school, Sonny returned to ranching.
On January 2, 1947, Sonny married Phyllis Lemmel. The couple ranched east of Newell where Sonny raised registered Hereford cattle and Rambouillet sheep.
During the late 80's, they moved to Newell and semi-retired. Sonny became an avid fisherman in his spare time. He also enjoyed playing cards and visiting with his friends over coffee. He could be found in the bleachers wherever his grandkids were playing sports.
Survivors include his son, Doug (Cheryl) Hohenberger, Newell; daughter, Lisa (Pat) Schieffer, Sturgis; sisters, Adele (John) Houston, Portland, OR, and Elaine Byers, Moscow, ID; seven grandchildren, Radley (fiancée, Kelcie Cross), Kirk, Tyler, Ryan, Drew, Dawson, and Dylan; and one great-granddaughter, Kynlee.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis in 2003, and brothers-in-law, Hank Severson and Roland Byers.
A memorial has been established.

Squire R. Broel

May 29, 1918 - June 26, 2011

Squire R. Broel, Spearfish and formerly of Sturgis, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Dorsett Regional Senior Care.
Visitation will be Wednesday from noon to 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 30, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.
Squire was born May 29, 1918, at Lesterville, SD, to Rudolph F. and May Bird (Beadleston) Broel. He attended school and graduated from McKinley School District #38, Lesterville, SD. Squire married Evelyn E. Hladky in Yankton, SD, on June 24, 1940. Squire served as a Private in the Army Air Corp from 1944 until his honorable discharge in 1945.
He was employed by Stuelpnagel Hatchery in Yankton before working for the Walter Gall Service Station where he delivered bulk gasoline to the farming community surrounding Lesterville. Squire owned and operated the S and E Café in Lesterville prior to moving to Sturgis in 1951. Squire was employed by the VA Medical Center at Fort Meade's Fire Department where he held the Chief position 11 years, retiring in 1978.
He was honored in 1985 for being in the Fire Service as a volunteer for 50 years, 35 of those years in Sturgis, SD. Squire was a member of the SD Firefighters Association, and past secretary, executive secretary of the Fire Chief Association; charter member and past President of the Black Hills Fire District. He was a long-time member of the Sturgis Presbyterian Church as well as past board member. His many other associations include National Fire Association, the American Legion, life-time member of the Elks, as well as many recreational organizations. Squire worked with the Sturgis Motorcycle Classic for many years starting in 1952. Squire was a volunteer with the Sturgis Ambulance Service. He also worked 25 years assisting with funerals and driving the coach for Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Squire enjoyed special times traveling, watching sports, visiting, and spending time with his family and friends. He always had time for a "how are you?" and a visit.
His survived by his three children, Larry (Jacque) Broel of Walla Wall, WA, Carolyn (Tom) McDonald of Moorcroft, WY, and Jean (Alfred) Lehn of Woodbridge, VA. He was blessed with five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, one special grand-dog, Victor, and two special cats, Cheyenne and Cody.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 63 years, Evelyn, in 2003.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Joanne K. Foertsch

May 5, 1935 - June 26, 2011

Joanne K.(Kuykendall) Foertsch, 76, Newcastle, died Sunday, June 26, 2011 at the Campbell County Memorial Hospital in Gillette, WY.
Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Larry Green officiating. Inturnment will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery near Deadwood, SD.
Joanne was born May 5, 1935 at Beaver County, OK, to Hollis and Carthel (Dower) Kuykendall. She moved to South Dakota in 1936 and lived at Sulphur. The family moved to Fruitdale where they farmed and ranched.
Joanne earned her GED and later attended two years of college at Spearfish.
She was married in 1954 and after a divorced she married again in 1963. Following another divorced she married "Chub" Foertsch in 1976 and the couple raised 10 children and one grandson. She loved gardening and garage sales. She enjoyed art and craftwork. She also loved her animals. She had a great sense of humor and was good at practical jokes.
Her family was very important to her. She enjoyed spending time with them. They were her greatest pleasure.
Survivors include her children; Linda (Terry) Bruce, Gillette, WY, Glenda (Clarence) Hedgecoth, Pikeville, TN, Alma (Jerry) Smith, Miles City, MT, Billy Eatherton, Newcastle, WY, Patrick Eatherton, Newcastle, WY, Alta (Jim) Bainer, Newcastle,WY; Tina Humble, Gillette, WY, C.J. Humble, Newcastle, WY; sisters Annalou Lamphear, Sturgis, Doris Oblander, Billings, MT; one brother Gale Kuykendall, Cohassett, MN; also 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Chub, two sons, Robert Eatherton and Galen Humble; one sister Faye Leveque, brothers, Hollis Kuykendall and Jack Kuykendall, one great grandson; her parents and grandparents.

Jim Funell

October 20, 1943 - June 26, 2011

Jimmie L. Funell, 67, Rapid City, died Sunday, June 26, 2011 at his residence in Rapid City.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Rev. Denzel Nonhof and Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Jimmie was born October 20, 1943 at Sturgis, SD, to Oscar and Sylvia (Heaton) Funell. He was raised on the family ranch and graduated from Sturgis High School. Following his honorable service as a jet mechanic in the Navy, Jimmie returned home. He was a dirt track racing thrill seeker. He could be found at Black Hills Speedway on Friday night, Gillette on Saturday and sometimes Huron or anywhere there was a race. Jimmie owned and operated Fast Lane Fabrications and later established Alleycat Engineering Inc. in Rapid City where he continued his life long focus of building and fabricating fast race cars.
On July 14, 2010 he married Cheri Mercy Johnson at Reno, Nevada.
Jimmie would like to be remembered for his faith in God and Country; and perhaps a little racing.
Survivors include his wife Cheri Funell, Rapid City; son, Michael Funell, Lead; daughter, Michelle (Michael) Qualls, Billings, MT; step son, Darwin (Connie) Hellekson, Phillip, SD; sister, Beverly (Pat) Urbaniak, Sturgis; also numerous grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, John Funell, previous wife Deanna and his beloved dog Jack.

Helen Rae (Sherman) Nixon

December 10, 1963 - September 22, 2011

Helen Rae (Sherman) Nixon, 47, passed away on September 22, 2011. She was born on December 10, 1963 in Spearfish, South Dakota to Robert "Bob" and Regina (Justice) Sherman. Helen was baptized and confirmed at Christ Church Episcopal in Lead, South Dakota. She also attended school there and graduated from Lead High School in 1982.
Helen lived in Sundance, Wyoming for a number of years as well as Casper, Wyoming, and her current residence at Thomasville, Georgia.
Helen is survived by her current husband, James (BB) Nixon; her mother, Regina (Justice) Sherman of Sturgis; a brother David Sherman of Sturgis; sister-in-law Jennifer Sherman; sister Jo (Sherman) Messerschmidt and brother-in-law Todd Messerschmidt of Wendell, MN; her children; her sons, James Sherman of Thomasville, Georgia, and Kurt (Kim) Sherman of Sturgis; daughter Melissa Sherman of Thomasville, Georgia; her grandchildren, Aleah and Faith Sherman of Sturgis, SD.
Helen was preceded in death by her brother Robert Sherman and her father Robert "Bob" Sherman, as well as a previous husband, Glen Tengler.
Helen had a true love of animals and kept pets around her during her whole life. She was a soft hearted trusting soul who had a true love of all and showed it without fail. She will be truly missed.
A memorial service will be held at the St. Francis of Assissi Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.

Yolanda J. Caretto

October 28, 1921 - September 21, 2011

Yolanda J. Caretto, 89, Lead, died Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Survivors include her three nieces, Marcia (Leonard) Faiman, Custer, SD, Gale (Rod) Eggiman, Moorhead, MN, Grace Caretto, Vancouver, WA; also numerous great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one brother, brother and sister in law and a nephew.

Memorial services will be at a later date.

Wayne Willis Walters

February 25, 1941 - September 16, 2011

Wayne Willis Walters, 70, Sheridan, WY, passed away on September 16, 2011, at West View Health Care in Sheridan.
Wayne was born February 25, 1941, in Watertown, SD, to Willis "Bill" and Emma (Melvin) Walters. In 1949, the family, including his two younger brothers, moved near Henry, SD, where his father established Tinkertown, a country store, treasure shop, and tourist attraction, building The World's Largest Pheasant, which still remains a landmark in the area. Wayne worked in the store during his school years, a trade which helped shape his interest in other people's "junk" and antiques. He attended country school at Pleasant Valley and graduated from Henry High School in 1961, excelling in track.
Wayne had a life-long passion for hunting and fishing and spent many hours enjoying both. He was also a gifted musician playing a number of instruments, including the piano. Throughout his life, he entertained, not only his family and friends, but shared his gift with numerous other people, including residents at local nursing homes.
Wayne worked for Firestone, Bridgestone, and Cobra Tire Company for more than 44 years, eventually settling in Sheridan, WY. He met Margaret Elaine Stanford and they were married in Sheridan on August 30, 1975. Their son, Raymond David Walters, was born February 10, 1981. Margaret and Wayne enjoyed going to auction sales, yard sales, and owned and operated The Raven's Nest Antique Shop in Sheridan for a number of years.
He is survived by his son, Raymond Walters, Sheridan, WY; two brothers, Dennis (Judy) Walters, Aurora, CO, and Curtis (Karen) Walters, Sturgis, SD; mother-in-law, Julia Stanford, Sheridan, WY; brother-in-law, David (Cecilia) Stanford, Carlsbad, NM; five nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Dean Posner, Lincoln, NE.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1981 and his mother and wife in 2009.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Zearl Willis Drum

January 15, 1927 - September 16, 2011

Zearl Willis Drum was born Jan 15, 1927 in Fluvanna, Texas, the only child of Willis Richard (Bill) and Clara Inez (Sneed) Drum. Zearl grew up in West Texas, primarily the Fluvanna and Snyder areas. During WWII, he enlisted in the Navy, serving as a corpsman in a hospital for wounded sailors and marines in California. Returning to Texas after his discharge, he then moved with his parents to the Faith area and began working as a ranch hand on the Merle Kelly ranch. For several years he owned and operated the local standard station and co-owned the Faith Saddle Shop. He began ranching in 1956. On June 2, 1957 he married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Overland. They enjoyed 52 years together until his wife, Shirley, passed away July 20, 2009.
Zearl loved the ranching life and the ranching community of which he was a part. Zearl & Shirley lived and ranched on Flintrock Creek and raised their family there. He enjoyed spending time with neighbors and friends and loved his family and his grandchildren. He was a member of the Faith Church of Christ. Zearl was also a Masonic Lodge member for over 50 years. Zearl fought a courageous battle with brain cancer until his death on Sept 16, 2011.
Grateful to have shared his life are his 3 children, Darla (Calvin) Chapman, Faith, SD; Janna Streleck,(James Warnemunde) Rapid City, SD; and Gary(Karleen) Drum, Faith, SD; nine grandchildren: Nathan Helms & Hannah Heinzerling, Rapid City, SD Jeff (Sarah) Chapman, Dickinson, ND, Alanna Chapman & Jack Valentine, Aurora, CO, Jenna Streleck and Nicole Streleck, Rapid City, SD, Ashley Drum, Garret Drum, Seth Drum and Megan Drum, Faith, SD and one great-grandson, Landyn Wade Chapman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife Shirley.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the Faith Community Center in Faith, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial follows at the Faith Cemetery.

Richard Harris Millikan

May 11, 1947 - September 15, 2011

Richard Harris Millikan, 64, of Deadwood, died Thursday, September 15, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, September 19, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Richard was born May 11, 1947, in San Bernardino, CA, to Forrest and Mary (Stewart) Millikan. He grew up and went to elementary school in San Bernardino and high school in Indio, CA.
Richard was drafted into the US Army in 1969 and spent one year in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1971.
Richard married Lynne Skyberg on February 28, 1973, in Willamina, OK. For most of his working years, Richard was a concrete finisher and belonged to the Cement Masons Union. He retired in 1998. In 2007, he and Lynne moved to Deadwood, SD, from Desert Hot Springs, CA. Richard belonged to the VFW in both Deadwood and Desert Hot Springs, CA.
Richard is survived by his wife of 38 years, Lynne of Deadwood; sons, Anthony Harris (Bobbi) Millikan of Des Moines, IA and Richard Thomas (Kathy Mangum) Millikan of Lead, SD; daughters, Rene Ellen (Mike Eves) Millikan of Deadwood and Lisa Elizabeth (Ryan) Arnoldussen of Pearl City, HI; two sisters, Janice of Sacramento, CA, and Sandra of Oklahoma City, OK; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents and one sister.
