Daniel "Skip" Wiest

June 13, 1956 - November 21, 2011

Daniel C. (Skip) Wiest passed away in Fridley, MN on November 21, 2011 at his home at the age of 55. Skip was born in Rapid City, SD to Daniel C. and Patricia (Holdren) Wiest on June 13, 1956. He attended kindergarten through 12th grade in the Newell school system. During his school years, he began a lifelong passion for genealogy and history. His high school years included participation in band, chorus, solo and ensemble contests, debate, student government, national honor society, and was chosen as a journalist for Boys’ State during his junior year. After high school graduation, Skip attended the University of New Mexico (UNM), where he completed a degree in history and political science. At UNM, he served as a housing staff member and was an active leader in Mortar Board, a national honor society recognizing college seniors for achievements in scholarship, leadership and service.
Skip completed graduate school at the University of Arkansas, where he served as Assistant Director of Housing. He was active in NASPA, an association for the advancement, health, and sustainability of the student affairs profession, and held several offices along with serving as a frequent presenter at many conferences and workshops. He continued his work in Student Affairs at Gonzaga University and the University of Arkansas. Skip moved to Fridley in 2002, where he worked as an educational consultant, trainer, and grant writer. Always a lifelong learner and voracious reader, his graduate studies targeted counselor education and higher education.
Throughout his life, Skip researched both family history and Butte county history. He conducted and facilitated searches for family histories and information, and his work included volumes of information about the Martin, Wiest, Holm, and Holdren family ancestors. Along with his interest in family history, he was helpful in providing pictures and information for the Newell museum, a facility his mother helped establish. Skip also was an avid spectator of many sports and faithfully followed several college and professional teams.
Family was central to Skip, and he was actively engaged with family members in all aspects of their lives. His devotion to his parents, grandparents, sister and her family, aunts and uncles, and cousins was ever-present. His only niece, Nikla Webb Lam, was the apple of his eye, and Skip was thrilled when her son, Evan Daniel Lam, was born in October of 2010. Skip was predeceased by his parents, Dan and Pat Wiest, his paternal grandparents, Paul and Barbara Wiest, maternal grandparents, Dewey and Eloise Holdren, and several cherished aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his sister, Kristine (Kris) Wiest Webb (David) of Jacksonville FL, niece Nikla Webb Lam (Tu), and great nephew, Evan Daniel Lam of Oviedo, FL, and aunt, Barbara (Bobby) Wiest Staton of Rapid City. Other survivors include a special cousin, Gwen Anderson Healey of Hot Springs, and friends Randy Zwetzig, Fort Collins, CO, Bambi Harris of Bardstown, KY, and Linda Friedman of Albuquerque, NM. A memorial service in the Black Hills area is planned for the Summer of 2012. A scholarship fund for a Newell High School senior who shares his passion for history has been established in Skip’s name. Shirley J. Hise

April 23, 1929 - November 23, 2011

Shirley Jean Hise, 82, Sturgis, died Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with the family present from 5p.m. until 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, December 1, 2011 at St. Martin's Chapel in Sturgis with Fr. Arnold Kari officiating. Burial follows at the St. Aloysius Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
Shirley was born April 23, 1929 at Bonilla, SD. Her parents were Joe and Lucille (Newman) Davis. She grew up on a ranch near Reva, SD, and attended country school. The family moved to Belle Fourche and Shirley married Leonard Hise at Belle Fourche in 1947.
Shirley lived in Washington, Idaho, Fruitdale and in 1959 she settled in Sturgis. She worked at Ben Franklin for many years. After the store closed she worked for McKay Drug for about a year. She worked for Allison Publishing for a short time and also for SD Job Service in the Green Thumb Project. She worked will into her 70's before retiring.
She liked to hunt, fish, plant and tend her abundant flower gardens and yardwork. She raised cockatiels, finchs and parakeets. She also enjoyed cross stitch, crocheting and arranging flowers. She loved being with her grandchildren and family.
Survivors include her sons, Claude (Laurie) Hise, Lander, WY, Bruce (Gail) Hise, Wayne (Kris) Hise, Huntington Beach, CA, Rory Hise, Spearfish, Jamey (Lori) Hise, Fort Morgan, CO; daughters, Caddie (Gary) Nelson, Lander, WY, Mary Ann (Jerry) Remer, Sturgis, Candy (Larry) Morrell, Sturgis, Peggy (Steve) Geyer, Sturgis; special friend, John Henry, Sturgis; brothers, Albert (Vonnie) Davis, Casper, WY, Donald Davis, Buffalo, SD, Wesley Davis, Belle Fourche, Byron (Barb) Davis, Colony, WY, Ronald (Shellie) Davis, Spearfish, SD, Daniel (Delphine) Davis, Belle Fourche; sisters, Florence Stedillie, Belle Fourche, Joan (Cliff) Anderson, Spearfish, Marcia (Bob) Richards, Spearfish, Sandra Oster, Belle Fourche; also 25 grandchildren, 64 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one great grandson.

Norma M. Cammack

October 26, 1931 - November 20, 2011

Norma Mildred Cammack, 80, Black Hawk, died Sunday, November 20, 2011, at her home in Black Hawk.
Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. on Friday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 26, 2011, at the Black Hawk Community Church with Pastor Ken Fairbrothers officiating. Burial will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery at a later date.
Norma was born October 26, 1931, at Peru, NE, to Joseph and Mildred (Cook) Prather. She grew up on her parent's farm and attended country school through the 8th grade. She was fond of horses and was involved in 4-H. She graduated from high school in Stella, NE, in 1949. Following graduation she worked various jobs.
On February 14, 1956, she married Jesse Lee at Rockport, MO. They lived in Tarkio, MO, for several years and Norma worked at a motel.
Following the death of her husband, she married Darrel Cammack at Hiawatha, KS, on September 21, 1969. They moved to Cozad, NE, and later to Fort Calhoun, NE. Norma started her career as an independent carrier for newspapers.
The family moved to Black Hawk in 1972 and Norma continued to work as an independent contract carrier for the Rapid City Journal. She delivered papers from Rapid City to Tilford until May of 2003.
Norma enjoyed reading, crocheting and needle point and was a member of the Black Hills Treasure Club. She called bingo at the Family Thrift Store and delivered a lot of papers over the years.
Survivors include her son, Joe (Tina) Lee, Sand Springs, OK; two daughters, Cheryl (Bill) Manke, Philip, SD, and Virginia Cammack, Black Hawk; one sister, Ruth Margaret (Wayne) Luginbill, Verdon, NE; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, one brother, one sister, and one granddaughter.
A memorial has been established.

Naida Ruth McKinney

January 14, 1924 - November 22, 2011

Naida Ruth McKinney, 87, Sturgis, died Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Survivors include two sons, Johnnie Rindy, Sturgis, and Duane Rindy, Colorado Springs, CO; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two spouses; one daughter, Kathleen Susan Rindy; and one sister, Shirley Oberpriller.

Marian Gwenda Anderson

September 3, 1925 - November 19, 2011

Marian Gwenda Anderson, 86, Sturgis, died Saturday, November 19, 2011 at the Ft. Meade VA Hospital.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Monday November 28, 2011 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Sturgis with President Bruce White presiding. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to the VA Hospice at Ft. Meade.
Marian was born September 3, 1925 at Fayette County, IA, to Willard and Iva (Haley) Butts.
As a young girl she moved with her parents to Hot Springs, SD where she attended school. Following graduation from high school, she attended nursing school in Alliance, NE. After completing her education she joined the United States Navy. She worked as a nurse in Naval Hospitals in Bremerton, WA and Barstow, CA. Following her honorable discharge she returned to South Dakota and was employed as a nurse at the VA hospital in Hot Springs.
She married Fred E. Anderson at Hot Springs on November 9, 1968.
The couple lived in Sturgis and Marian worked as a nurse at Fort Meade until her retirement in 1985.
Marian was a member of the Sturgis VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion. She was also a member of the Good Sam camping club, the Treasure Club, Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include her husband Fred Anderson, Sturgis; one sister, Frances Robison, Provo, UT; also numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents, one brother and one sister.

Elsie Ailene Hultenschmidt

March 11, 1917 - November 19, 2011

Elsie A. Hultenschmidt, 94, Philip, SD, died Saturday, November 19, 2011, at the Philip Hospital.
A memorial service is being held Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the Quinn Community Hall with Pastor Kathy Chesney officiating.
Visitation will be 8:00 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 25, 2011, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Skip Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Elsie was born March 11, 1917, at Orient, IL, to Sam and Hattie (Southerland) Biggs. She grew up in Orient and married Lloyd Hultenschmidt at Marian, IL, on April 12, 1937. The couple made their home on the Hultenschmidt ranch near Belle Fourche. In 1947, they moved to a ranch northeast of Alzada, MT, and later moved onto a ranch near White Owl, SD. In 1960, they purchased a ranch west of Quinn, SD, which they continued to operate until health reasons forced Lloyd into the Philip Nursing Home in 1996. Lloyd died November 23, 2002, and Elsie stayed on the ranch until May of 2010 when she moved into the Philip Nursing Home.
Elsie liked to visit and socialize. She enjoyed reading, quilting, cooking, and baking, and was an avid bird watcher.
She is survived by a sister, Sible Hall of Orville, CA; numerous nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Mary and Ron Berger of Whitewood, SD, and their family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, and five brothers.
Memorials have been established to the Country Pantry in Wall and the Quinn Fire Department.

Bill Schwartz

February 24, 1950 - November 19, 2011

William Charles "Bill" Schwartz, 61 of Sturgis, died unexpectedly Saturday, November 19, 2011, at the Sturgis Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family and co-workers.
Bill was born February 24, 1950, to Charles and Cecelia (Brekenfeld) Schwartz in Belle Fourche, SD. He grew up in Newell, SD, and attended school there until 1959 when his family moved to Sturgis. During his teen years, he spent summers at his cousin, Harlan Smizer's ranch in Burke, SD, and at the Kieffer ranch east of Sturgis. Bill graduated from Brown High School in 1969 and lettered in football. He later graduated from SD VoTech.
September 15, 1972, he married Rita Nonnast and they resided in Rapid City for two years where he worked various jobs and was stationed in Custer as a guard during the Aim uprising. They later moved back to Sturgis where they remained the rest of his life.
Bill enjoyed spending time with all his family and especially the company of his sons, Mike and Clark, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, motorcycling with his brother, and road trips plus, an occasional stop in Deadwood to drop a few nickels. He was employed at the Meade County Courthouse as a custodian where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his co-workers and staff.
He is survived by his wife Rita and sons, Mike and Clark, all of Sturgis; one brother, Lowell (Debbie) Schwartz, Sturgis; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials have been established to the Meade County Senior Center and the EMT crews.
Visitation will be Tuesday from noon to 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Rev. Willard Olsen officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery.

Franklin Thomas Jones

August 6, 1951 - November 19, 2011

Franklin Thomas Jones, 60, Isabel, died Saturday, 11/19/2011, at the Fort Meade VA Hospital.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. until time of services at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Committal services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Pastor Darla Dunn officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may gather at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis prior to leaving for the cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
Frank was born August 6, 1951 at Jersey City, New Jersey to Egbert and Gladys (Davis) Jones. At the age of 17 he joined the United States Marine Corps and served his country in Vietnam. Following his honorable discharge he became a police officer for the city of Orange, CA. He worked for Garrett Air Research in El Segundo, CA as an instrument tester.
He married Charin Bertsch Barone on November 7, 1979 at Cambria, CA.
Frank worked his way from runner to executive assistant to writer on the television sitcom "Gimme a Break". In 1989 he worked as a contract administrator for international film distribution. He then worked as a church administrator in Northern California before retiring to Isabel where he enjoyed the country living and working in the trucking business. His favorite time was cowboying.
Survivors include his wife Charin Barone, Isabel; two sons, Franklin Thomas Sperazzo, Jermell Machado Jones; three daughters, twin daughters, Thelicia Monique and Racquel Lynette Sperazzo and Lakeisha R. Jones; three brothers, Egbert Jones, William Jones and Alfred Jones; one aunt, Francis McCreary; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both parents and one brother, Leslie A Jones.

Lyle "Duane" Carlson

September 22, 1924 - November 17, 2011

Lyle "Duane" Carlson, 87, Osage, WY, died Thursday, November 17, 2011 at the Weston County Manor in Newcastle.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 8 a.m. until time of services.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Rev. David Baer officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established to the St. Joseph's Childrens home in Torrington, WY.
Duane was born September 22, 1924, at Raymond, SD, to Chester and Hazel (Jones) Carlson. He attended school in Bryant, SD.
He married Ruby Goldseth in 1941 in Minnesota. They returned to Bryant where Duane farmed. In 1949 they moved to Broadview, MT and farmed near Acton, MT. They moved to Eugene, OR and Duane worked in dam construction. He moved back to Bryant where he farmed.
Duane married Elda Germundson at Couer d'Alene, ID on September 19, 1954. They farmed for a time before moving to Wyoming where Duane worked on road construction projects in Wyoming and South Dakota. He owned and operated his own trucks before retiring to Osage, WY.
He was a member of the American Legion Club in Bryant, SD.
Survivors include his wife Elda Carlson, Osage, WY; sons, Mike (Jan) Carlson, Colony, WY, Gary (Cheri) Carlson, Hitchcock, SD, Jerald Carlson, Newcastle, WY, Chester "Sonnie" Carlson, Osage, Ricky (Sequina) Hoff, Anchorage, AK, Ivan Hoff, Seattle, WA; daughters, Dianne (Richard) Corey, Sioux Falls, Zena (Loren) Hieb, Loveland, CO, Kim (Lloyd) Thomas, Redding, CA, Vickie (Roger) Solmonson, Newcastle, WY, Marilyn (Russ) Bushaw, Federal Way, WA; sisters Ardith Petershagen, Sioux Falls, Joan Kelly, Carslbad, CA, Julia (Bill) Cropp, Carlsbad, CA, Nancy (Tom) Higgins, Emmett, ID; also 20 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents, two sons, two daughters, three brothers and one sister.

Dorothy Ann Tarver Johnson

June 13, 1926 - November 14, 2011

Dorothy Ann Tarver Johnson, age 85, of Rapid City, SD, left her earthly family to be with the Lord in Heaven on November 14, 2011.
Dorothy was born in Aberdeen, SD, to Jewell and Mary Tarver on June 13, 1926. She obtained her diploma in nursing and was trained by the nuns at Aberdeen Presentation College. For the next 50 plus years, she cared for patients with deep compassion primarily at the Fort Meade VA. Even upon retirement, she had the strong desire to nurse and care for those in need through home health, the Red Cross, area nursing homes, and anybody she met that needed her help. Nursing was her life’s calling as she brought comfort and God’s love to all those around her. Two of her daughters followed her into the nursing profession.
She had eight siblings in her close-knit family. She was married on June 19, 1949, to Homer Johnson. They were blessed with five children.
Dorothy was known for her baked goodies, especially her frosted peanut butter cookies and rich chocolate brownies. She filled her home with many interesting antiques, yes, thrift store treasures, and a wonderful collection of toys and dolls. She was an avid reader and enjoyed keeping up on current events and never missed a day without Fox News.
Although she worked full-time in her chosen profession, she was always there for her family with an open heart and helpful advice. She was the rock on which all of her loved ones could gratefully depend. Her grandchildren were the apple of her eye. She volunteered at the Cornerstone Rescue Mission because she felt so strongly about helping those in need.
She attended First Christian Church with a passion for God and was thankful for a life full of blessings. Dorothy served her Lord in daily thought and deed. She looked forward to an eternal life in Heaven, free of physical pain and worry. She was, and will always be, a guiding spirit to her dear friends and family.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ted & Jackie Johnson of Hurst, Texas; her daughter and son-in-law, Timur and Steve Coldwell, daughter and son-in-law, Taphne and Tom Blue, and daughter Tamara Gatzke, all of Rapid City. Also included in her loving family are nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Tarver Johnson.
A memorial has been established to the Cornerstone Rescue Mission in Rapid City.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 18, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at First Christian Church in Rapid City with Pastor Scott Hultgren officiating. Interment will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis, SD, at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

G. Wayne Davis

August 24, 1924 - November 13, 2011

G. Wayne Davis, 87, Sturgis, died Sunday, November 13, 2011, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
Wayne was born August 24, 1924, in Sturgis, SD, to Francis Gayl (Griffith) Davis and George A. Davis. Wayne attended schools in Sturgis, graduating from high school in 1942. Wayne was the first high school junior to attend SD's Boy's State. He attended SDSU in Brookings one year before army service and earned a BS Degree in Technical Agriculture (Wildlife Major) from SDSU after three years of service in the army.
Wayne took army basic instruction at Fort Bliss, TX, assigned to the 839th AAA (AW) Bn., an anti-aircraft artillery battalion. After a year in Texas, Wayne served overseas in the European Theater of Operations, traveling with his battalion through Belgium, France, Germany, and Austria. His battalion was assigned at various intervals to the First, Third, and Seventh Armies. He attained the noncommissioned rank of Technician Third Grade. Wayne was discharged in April, 1946.
Wayne married Mary Lou Brooks, his college sweetheart, October 15, 1949, in Aberdeen, SD.
Wayne's working career took many turns: Big Game Technician with the SD Dept. of Game, Fish & Parks, stationed in Lead, SD; Commercial Tire Salesman with Eddie's Tire & Glass in Deadwood; Mobil Oil Bulk Distribution Agent in Sturgis; Assistant Manager of the Black Hills, Badlands, and Lakes Association; and Business Manager for the Meade School District 46-1. He retired after 23 years with the school district in June 1986.
During a lengthy retirement period, Wayne and Mary Lou traveled by bus and RV to many parts of the United States. Wayne enjoyed hunting, fishing, coffee hour at the bakery, and card playing with friends, neighbors, and members of the Sturgis Senior Center. For eleven years, Wayne and Mary Lou spent ninety days during winters in Valle Del Oro RV Park near Mesa, AZ.
Wayne was a lifetime member of the Sturgis Presbyterian Church and also participated in several recreational and service organizations of Sturgis including the Key City Good Sam RV Club, the Sturgis Sno-Drifters Snowmobile Club, the Four-Wheeler Club of Sturgis, the VFW, JC's, Toastmaster's Club, past president of Rotary, and is a charter member and past president of the Sturgis Golden K Kiwanis Club. He was the 1976-77 president of SD Association of School Business Officials.
Survivors include his wife Mary Lou Davis, Sturgis; three sons, Kurt (Meri) Davis, Reno, NV, Rodney (Kimberly) Davis, Lead, SD, and Jerry Davis, Pueblo, CO; one daughter, Kathryn (Jesse) Lewis, Black Hawk, SD; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dale; and one sister, Mildred Davis Hale Coats.
Memorials have been established to the First Presbyterian Church and the Golden K Kiwanis Club of Sturgis.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the family present at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
A memorial service will be held Friday, November 18, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.
