Charles Pennington
May 8, 2013

Charles Henry Pennington, 83, died Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Dow Rummel Village, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He had been seriously ill for some time. On Wednesday morning he got up, was given his breakfast and then went to sit in a chair and quietly slipped away. Charles was a larger than life character. He was born and raised in Texas and never lost that western persona. He was a child of the depression and possessed that generation's appreciation for financial security. He had a dramatic young adulthood. He ran away from home at the age of fourteen and served on a naval ship in the Pacific Ocean for over four months before receiving orders to return home. He re-enlisted in 1946 and served until he was honorably discharged in 1954. He attended Texarkana Junior College in 1955 and was united in marriage to Janis Lansdale on August 28, 1954. Charles transferred to Texas Tech, in Lubbock, Texas, in 1956 and graduated in 1958 with a B.B.A in Industrial Management. His career as a Safety Engineer took his family to various locations in Texas, Oklahoma and finally Arizona where they lived for almost forty years. Most recently, Charles and his wife Janis moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where his son and daughter-in-law were able to offer support. Charles loved westerns and could watch them endlessly. He was attracted by the good guy vs. bad guy scenario and never ceased enjoying the western ending where the bad guy "got-it-in-the-end!" He has a Remington cowboy sculpture above the fireplace in his apartment and always hoped his sons would appreciate it. He used to say, "I always wanted to own something that my children would fight over when I'm dead!' He had a fantastic sense of humor and loved laughter. He was an avid fisherman and we have many Polaroid's of him holding on to prize catches with great joy! He was a naturally honest and generous person who was more comfortable giving than receiving. Charles was a great, faith-filled man of tremendous integrity who was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Tucson and served many years of ministry to local nursing homes. He is survived by his wife Janis Pennington; his sons, Father Matthew Pennington of San Luis Obispo, California and Dr. John Pennington; daughter-law Mary Pennington, and granddaughter Kelsey Pennington of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; brother William Pennington and his wife Faye Pennington of Houston, Texas and sister Delfina McGee of Marshall, Texas. We will forever miss that booming laugh, those crushing hugs and the stories he wanted to tell you....the stories "that would make a glass eye cry!' "Son I don't care how much money you make or how successful you are. What I care about is that the world is a better place because you lived in it!' Charles Henry Pennington 1929-2013 Memorial service 2:00 pm Monday May 13, 2013 at the Peterson-Halladay Chapel at Dow Rummel Village.
