M. Jeanne Weeg
Died: Nov 26, 2001

M. Jeanne Weeg, daughter of E. Walter and Myrtle (Foss) Ledyard, was born on November 20, 1918 in Sioux Falls, SD. Jeanne attended Washington High School and graduated from the class of ’36.

She fell in love and married Oscar Weeg on October 13, 1940 In Lennox, SD and they were blessed with a son, Gregory.

Jeanne had a positive spirit and a sweet personality; always helpful and thoughtful of others while still keeping that sparkle of fun and mischief.

Her loving husband, Oscar Weeg and sister, Dorothy Johnson, preceded her in death.

She is survived by son, Greg, Weeg; and daughter-in-law, Mona; grandchildren, Wendy, Kaicie and Skyler Weeg and brother, Pat Ledyard.

“To know her was to love her” and her spirit will live on in her family who will miss her so.

Betty Walters
Died: Nov 28, 2001

Betty Lou Webster was born June 2, 1934, in Duluth, MN, to Jesse and Fran (Hall) Webster. She graduated from Duluth High School in 1950.

Betty Lou married Richard Walters on February 6, 1951. The couple made their home in Minneapolis, MN. In 1957, the family moved to California where Betty Lou became a student at UCLA. She received her nursing degree in 1960. Three years later, the family returned to Minneapolis, MN, where she worked at the Fridley Medical Center. The family moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1971. Betty Lou became employed with Sioux Valley Hospital as an LPN. She retired from Sioux Valley Hospice in 1997.

In her free time, she loved to go fishing at the Missouri River with her husband, Richard. She enjoyed camping and traveling throughout the United States, and particularly liked spending time at the Ozark Mountains. Betty Lou was also a talented cook and a skilled artist of landscape oil painting.

Betty Lou had a passion for serving people. In addition to her nursing career, she was a constant caretaker for family and friends. Betty Lou opened her arms to anyone in need. In 1990, she co-founded SOCM, (Support Our Country’s Military) in response to the Gulf War. Founded with grassroots beginnings, SOCM grew to become an internationally known organization.

She was a member of the Central Valley Community Church.

Betty Lou’s loving and dedicated spirit will be well missed by those that loved her.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Richard; sons, Scott and his wife, Connie, Rock Rapids, IA, Richard Jr., and his wife, Ann, Crooks, SD, Sean and his wife, Heurta, Rock Rapids, IA; daughters, Sandra Hippen and her husband, Rick, Sioux Falls, SD, Suzanne Crichton and her husband, Donald, Delmont, SD, Sheryl Steineke and her husband, Ron, Hartford, SD; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Gerald Gravelle and his wife, Sharon, North Branch, MN; and a special aunt and uncle, Rose and Elmer Bailey, Winnebago, MN.

Donald Kangas
Died: Nov 30, 2001

Donald Maynard Kangas, son of Ida (Huotari) and William Kangas, was born January 29, 1919 on a farm near Lake Norden, SD. As a child, he moved with his family to Sioux Falls, SD where he grew up and received his education.

He worked for John Morrell & Company until entering the Air Force during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre.

In 1943, Donald was united in marriage to Lorraine Shillingstad in Tucson, AZ. After his discharge from the military, the couple returned to Sioux Falls. Don worked as a foreman for Cengas Company, retiring after 34 years.

He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, and the American Legion, Post 15.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lorraine; a son, Mark of Littleton, CO; three grandchildren, Jason Weller, Brian and Jennifer Kangas; a sister, Joyce McFarland, Rialto, CA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Elsie Zellmer
Died: Dec 02, 2001

Elsie Zellmer was born August 18, 1912 in Logan Township, rural Minnehaha County of South Dakota. She grew up in the area and attended high school in Dell Rapids. She was confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Dell Rapids.

Elsie moved to Sioux Falls in 1940 and worked as a clerk at the Argus Leader from 1946 until her retirement in 1975.

She was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, and a member of the Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary for many years.

Survivors include her sister, Lillie Miller, of Pipestone, SD; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Joe, and one sister, Rose.

Minnie O'Meara
Died: Dec 01, 2001

Minnie Eikemo was born April 17, 1920, in Beresford, SD, to Jacob and Caroline (Gjervik) Eikemo. She graduated from Beresford High School in 1938, and then moved to Sioux Falls. After working at the Air Base during World War II, she became an office worker at the Boyce Greely Building. Minnie then became a homemaker and loving mother to her children. In 1968, she became employed with Donahue Clinic as a keypunch operator. As the clinic grew to become Central Plains Clinic, Minnie became a supervisor in the bookkeeping and computer department.

She married Everett “Swede” O’Meara on February 13, 1971, in Sioux Falls. Minnie retired in 1985. Following her retirement, she and Swede enjoyed wintering in Tucson, Arizona. She also enjoyed traveling, baking and golfing. An avid bridge player, Minnie belonged to several bridge clubs.

Minnie was a charter member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls where she was actively involved in Bible study groups and circles. She was an associate member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Tucson, Daughter’s of the Nile, and was a past member of the Elks Club Auxiliary.

Those that knew Minnie best will recall her never-ending desire to be with others. She cherished time spent with her family and held close to her heart the many friendships that she had made throughout her life. Her warm and generous spirit will be well missed.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Everett "Swede" O'Meara, Sioux Falls, SD; son, Jeff Snyder, Brandon, SD; daughters, Ginny Holmes, Sioux Falls, SD, Barbara May, Madison, SD; stepsons, Jim O'Meara, St. Cloud, MN, Dennis O'Meara and his wife, Kay, San Gabriel, CA, Tom O'Meara, Sioux Falls, SD, Don O'Meara and his wife, Rowena, Los Angels, CA, John O'Meara, St. Cloud, MN; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her sister, Bertha Christensen of Sioux Falls.

Her parents and two sisters, Florence Wangsness and Alice Bloomer, preceded Minnie in death.

Elsie Zellmer
Died: Dec 02, 2001

MaryAnn McIntyre
Died: Dec 03, 2001

MaryAnn McIntyre, 70, 3204 S. Jefferson Ave., died December 3, 2001 at her home after a four year battle with cancer.

MaryAnn Dobler, the daughter of Jacob and Emilie (Zeitner) Dobler was born on November 29, 1931 in Tripp, SD. She grew up in Tripp and graduated from Tripp High School in 1949. She married John McIntyre on June 14, 1953 and they had two sons, Jonathan and Jeffrey.

Music played an important part in her life. During her youth, she was active in all of the music groups available to her as well as playing the organ for her church. In college, she sang in the Augustana College Choir and as an adult, she participated in a variety of music activities including choir directing and singing and playing in the bell choir.

She received both her BA and MA degrees in education at Augustana College and spent her entire career teaching in several elementary schools in Sioux Falls. MaryAnn and two other teachers were given a special assignment to develop a curriculum for gifted education in the Sioux Falls elementary schools. After the completion of that project, she spent the remainder of her career teaching gifted education to students in Sioux Falls elementary schools. She also conducted workshops and taught graduate level courses related to curriculum development and teaching the gifted. She had a talent for enabling students to discover that they were capable of much more than they had imagined.

Her life centered around her family, her profession, and her church. She was active in several professional organizations, countless students benefited from her dedicated advocacy and her church benefited from her dedicated service. She loved serving on the worship committee, leading bible studies, participating in the choral groups and the bell choir and all other aspects of the life of the church. Among her many offices and positions in the church, she was elected as president of the congregation, the first woman in the congregation to hold that office.

MaryAnn was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Surviving her are her husband, John; sons, Jonathan, Portland, ME, and Jeffrey, Sioux Falls, SD; granddaughters, Amy (McIntyre) Kinnan and her husband Casey, Greenville, NC, and SaraJayne McIntyre, Sioux Falls, SD; sisters, Trudie Kinnard and her husband Brooke and Helen Zard and sister-in-law Frieda Dobler.

Memorials may be directed to St. John American Lutheran or Sioux Valley Hospice.

Ruth Esther Brandon
Died: Dec 02, 2001

Ruth Esther Foster was born October 3, 1922 in Sioux Falls, where she grew up and received her education, graduating from Washington High School. She then attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

Ruth married Marshall Brandon on January 2, 1945 at Calvary Episcopal Cathedral in Sioux Falls. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Sioux Falls. Ruth was a member of Calvary Episcopal Cathedral where she was active in the St. Elizabeth Guild. She is a past president of the Sioux Falls Civic Fine Arts Council. Ruth also had a painting that was displayed with the South Dakota Women’s Painters Traveling Exhibit. She was a lifelong resident of Sioux Falls.

Survivors include her husband, Marshall, of Sioux Falls; one son, Jeff, of West DesMoines, IA; one daughter, Mary Miller of Rochester Hills, MI; and 6 grandchildren, Allie and Ashley Brandon; Brad, Jeannie, and Erik Miller; and Bart Brandon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Robert, and one brother, Curt Foster.

Colin G. Parkes
Died: Dec 06, 2001

Colin Gill Parkes was born October 6, 1916 in Cavalier, North Dakota. After graduating from Langford High School in South Dakota, Colin attended Huron College and the University of South Dakota.
He married Florence Holm on October 11, 1943 in Langford, SD. Following five and a half years of military service, he retired with the rank of Major. Colin earned several distinguished medals, including the Purple Heart. While in the service, he served with the combat engineers in North Africa and Italy. After the service, Colin was employed as a hospital manager and with the Social Security Administration. He was retired from the staff of the Veterans Administration after 27 years of civil service. In 1970, Colin volunteered as an advisor in Vietnam and served six months in Vietnam as Administrator of Veterans Affairs in Southeast Asia. Colin was widowed in 1991.
He is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Van Wyk of Orange City, Iowa, and Marjorie Davis, of Eden Prairie, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Vickers.

Harold Miller
Died: Dec 06, 2001

Harold G. Miller was born March 30, 1930 to Chris G. and Vina (Foster) Miller in Sioux Falls. He graduated from Hartford High School in 1940 and worked in the area as a farmer and feeder. Harold married Eileen Benson on Nov. 29, 1944 in Sioux Falls. His career as a livestock buyer for Benson-Miller Livestock and farming spanned 30 years. Harold was a past president of the County Farm Bureau, a Republican Committee man for Minnehaha County, and a 4-H leader of Benton Beaver Club. He enjoyed the outdoors by hunting, fishing and playing golf.
Harold is survived by: his wife, Eileen; four sons, Clark and his wife Karen; Brian and his wife Donna; Shane and his wife Laurie, all of Sioux Falls, SD; Kim and his wife Roxy of St. Paul, MN; two daughters, Tammy Lowe and her husband Brian of Hartford, SD and Hollie Miller of Sioux Falls, SD; ten grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one sister; Violet Nolles and husband Ralph of Stockton, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Gregg; a senior staff sergeant that died in the military.

Barbara Vallette
Died: Dec 07, 2001

Barbara Ann Minton was born January 10, 1937, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Ivan and Ruth (Skaouge) Minton. She graduated from high school in Sioux City. Following her marriage, she became a homemaker and loving mother to her five children.
In 1970, the family moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where, for several years, she worked at American Western. She then worked with Georgia Pacific and Jordan Millwork. During this time, Barbara attended Southeast Technical Institute. Health concerns led her to retire in the early 1990’s.
Barbara enjoyed needle work, embroidery and working with all types of crafts. She was a member of First Christian Church. A woman of strong faith, she cherished time spent with Bible Study Fellowship. In the center of her life, however, was her family. Deeply devoted to her children and grandchildren, Barbara unselfishly dedicated her life to them. Blessed with a maternal love without boundaries, adopting her granddaughter, Amanda, was a highlight in Barbara’s life. Her loving, kind and generous spirit will be well missed.
Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, David Vallette, Daniel Hovde and his wife, Stacy; East Lancing, MI, daughters, Angela Myers, Seattle, WA, Lori Ertz and her husband, Jon, Sioux Falls, SD, Tami Bormann and her husband, Timothy, Faulkton, SD, Amanda Myers-Vallette, Sioux Falls, SD, 10 granddaughters; Sharla, Brandy, Marissa, Cheyenne, Cassandra, Alexandra, Haley, Emily, Carissa and Tyler Ann, and a brother, Richard Minton, Emporia, KS. Others that made her life special are her friends, Merle Hood and Karen Samp.

Victor Sieler
Died: Dec 06, 2001

Victor Sieler was born August 1, 1935, on the family farm near Mound City, SD, to August and Rosa (Lindeman) Sieler. He was raised and attended schools in the area.

In 1955, Vic entered the US Navy. He received his honorable discharge in 1957, and moved to Rapid City, SD, where he worked for a lumber company. That same year, he married Izora Bailey. In 1960, Vic moved to Seattle, WA, where he continued working with the lumber company and also attended night school. He moved to California in 1965, and began working with Mitchum Cosmetics and Bonne Bell Cosmetics as a salesman. Vic’s territory included much of the western portion of the United States.

He married Janice Rau on May 31, 1968, in Sturgis, SD. The couple made their home in Dublin, CA. In the early 1980’s, Vic began working for Sommer Maca as a salesman. Following his retirement in 1997, Vic and Janice moved to Sioux Falls, SD.

Vic enjoyed dancing, playing golf and was meticulous in the care of his lawn and his car. He played the accordion and organ, and was particularly fond of polka music. Vic and Janice enjoyed several trips throughout the United States visiting with friends and relatives. In the center of his life, was his family. He cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren and always made himself available to guide them through life. Those who knew Vic best will recall his never-ending quest to meet new friends and to rekindle established friendships. His good sense of humor combined with his warm and genuine personality enabled him to develop friendships wherever he would go.

He was a past member of the Elks Club, past president of the Glass Association of California, and a volunteer for the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Department.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Janice Sieler, Sioux Falls, SD, sons, Michael Sieler and his wife, Lori, Kirkland, WA, Bryan Kegler, Sioux Falls, SD, daughter, Dawn Ochs and her husband, Owen, Sioux Falls, SD, 3 grandchildren, brothers, Ephriam Sieler, Gettysburg, SD, Loyd Sieler and his wife, Delores, Eureka, SD, Leo Sieler and his wife, Joanie, Lincoln, NE, and his sister, Sylvia Huber, Eureka, SD, as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

His parents and a sister, Delores, preceded him in death.
