Lyle Christensen
Died: Mar 30, 2002

Lyle G. Christensen was born at Hannaford, ND, on November 21, 1916, the son of Praven and Mabel (Jensen) Christensen. As a young child, he moved with his family to Turner County, SD, where he attended school in Freeman, SD. After graduation, he attended and graduated from Nettleton Commercial College.

He married Othella Nustad on January 11, 1941, in Sioux Falls, SD.

He worked for Edwards Finance Company in Sioux Falls. In July 1942, he entered into military service in the U.S. Air Force. He was discharged in June 1946, as a 1st Lieutenant, and returned to Sioux Falls.

He worked for Rudning Robertson and later became employed with the sales staff of Midwest Beach. In 1971, he became co-owner of Interstate Office Products and served as it’s president until his retirement in 1982.

Lyle was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Minnehaha Country Club, Westward Ho Country Club, Elks Lodge, American Legion, and Sons of Norway.

Lyle is survived by his wife of 61 years, Othella Christensen, Sioux Falls, SD, his sister, Lorraine Unruh of Laurens, Iowa, one niece, two nephews and other relatives and friends. His father, mother, and brother, Martin, preceded him in death.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed traveling. Sports activities were of great interest to him. He was an ardent golfer, liked to bowl and to hunt and fish.

Russell D. MacDonald
Died: May 09, 2002

Russell was born June 15, 1916 at White River, SD. His parents died when he was a small child, so he was raised in the Odd Fellows Home in Dell Rapids, SD. The Odd Fellows home and staff became a very important part of his childhood years. He grew up in Dell Rapids where he received his education. He began employment with Tri State Electric in 1940.
In 1944, he entered military service where he served in the US Navy as a Seaman 2nd Class. He received an honorable discharge on December 7, 1945.
He was united in marriage with Norma Hove on May 17, 1947 in Garretson, SD. Upon his return from the Navy, Russell returned to Tri State Electric where he worked as a salesman. He retired from there in 1979 after 39 years of service to the company. His wife preceded him in death on December 13, 1985.
Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Michael MacDonald of Sioux Falls, SD, Paula Julson of Sioux Falls, SD, Kathryn Swenning of Yankton, SD, Jay MacDonald of Dell Rapids, SD, and Brenda Neises of Sioux Falls, SD; and 9 grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, William, and daughter, Kim.

Lloyd G. Olson
Died: May 10, 2002

Lloyd G. Olson, 78, of 1100 N. Lake Ave. died Friday at Avera McKennan Hospital. Lloyd was born December 4, 1923 in Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up in Sioux Falls where he received his education, graduating from Washington High School in 1942. He attended several colleges including the University of Iowa, St. Olaf Collage, the University of Southern California, Arizona State University, and Mankato State University. On December 8, 1942 he entered military service where served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a Navy carrier pilot in the Pacific during the War. He received his honorable discharge from the Navy on November 25, 1945. He later served with the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict from March 1, 1951 until November 30, 1952.
He was united in marriage with Inez Mae Griffith on August 7, 1946 in Sioux Falls.
Lloyd was a pilot and safety officer with the South Dakota Air National Guard from 1946 until his retirement in 1978. He retired as a Lt. Colonel, serving the Guard for a total of 32 years. Following retirement, he flew as a corporate pilot for 10 years.
He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, the Elk’s Club, American Legion, VFW, and the National Guard Association. Lloyd was president of the South Dakota National Guard Association in 1973-74.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Inez, of Sioux Falls; his children, Mrs. J.B. (Annell) Brunsmann of Westminster, CA, Curtis G. Olson of Sidney, MT, Robert P. Olson, of Huntsville, AL, David L. Olson of Denver, CO, Donald S. Olson, of Sioux Falls, SD, and Mrs. Maurice (Patricia) Schriever, Jr, of Omaha, NE; 13 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and one brother, Harold P. Olson, of Spokane, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Victoria, and one brother, Wallace.

Arlie W. Rehfeldt, son of George and Mahala (Klinkenberg) Rehfeldt was born on a farm South of Humboldt, SD on February 14, 1923. He grew up and received his education in the area.

Arlie was united in marriage with Rose M. Bjorklund on November 16, 1943 at Zion Lutheran Church (West Wall Lake). Following their marriage they farmed south of Humboldt until his retirement in 1989. In 1992, following the farm sale they moved to Humboldt. They enjoyed traveling together throughout the United States. Rose died on December 18, 1995.

Arlie was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church; he served on many boards in the area including the FHA Board, the Elevator Board and on the Township Board for 33 years.

Survivors include a special friend, Vera Bjorklund, Canova, SD; son, Arlie Rehfeldt Jr., Sioux Falls; daughters, Mary Lou (Denny) Puthoff, Sioux Falls, Rose (Tom) Sieverding, Humboldt, SD; five grandchildren, Lori Puthoff, Humboldt, Lynn (Mark) Tully, Sioux Falls, Rose Marie (Doug) Hoiten, Bethel, AK, Daryl (Julie) Sieverding, Canistota, Matt Sieverding, Humboldt; seven great grandchildren, Autumn Puthoff, Miranda Hoiten, Robert Hoiten, John Hoiten, Leo Hoiten, Mary Kate Hoiten, Becky Lee Sieverding; four step great grandchildren; Ashley, Dan, Derek, and Sheldon; sisters, Gladys Halstenson, Sioux Falls, and Judy Lee Delaney, North Kansas City, MO.

In addition to his wife, Rose, his parents, two grandsons and one great granddaughter, preceded Arlie in death.

Donald Leroy Carlson was born July 15, 1924 to Walter A. and Greta A. (Munson) Carlson in East Sioux Falls. He was raised and educated in Colton and Valley Springs and served in the US Army during WWII. United in marriage in August 1946 to Doris Jacobson, they started their lives together. Donald was a technology specialist and worked for JC Penny’s and NSP throughout his career while living in Sioux Falls, Minneapolis and Washington Township, NJ. Donald enjoyed traveling; after his retirement in 1984, he and Doris shared their days at their summer home at Lake Poinsett and wintered in Donna, TX.

The El Riad Shrine was important part of Donald’s life for 60 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Sioux Falls where he served with the Consistery, Directors Staff, and was a past participant with the Justors. He was also a member of the Khurum Lodge in Estelline and the Scottish Rite. Donald was a member of the National Woodcarvers Association, a life member of the American Legion in Valley Springs and a volunteer monitor for Field & Stream at Lake Poinsett where he enjoyed fishing.

Donald is survived by his wife, Doris of Sioux Falls; three sons, Gary and his wife, Judy of Gary, SD, Bruce and his wife, Eilene of Palm Coast, FL, Brian of Sioux Falls; one daughter, Janice Nelson and her husband, Tom of Forest City, IA; six granddaughters, Jennifer McIntyre, Carrie, Amy and Rachel Nelson, Martha and Chelsea Carlson; four step- grandchildren; four great grandchildren; nine step-great grandchildren; one brother, Marvin and his wife, Ann of Sioux Falls; two sisters, Harriet Skillman and her husband, Norman of Valley Springs, SD and Joy Outka of Sioux Falls, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorial to El Riad Transportation or East Side Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Chris Christopulos was born July 18, 1923 to George and Athena Christopulos at Tripp, SD. He moved with his family to Sioux Falls where he grew up and received his education, graduating from Washington High School. After 2 years of college at the University of Nebraska, he completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1948 at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. Following college, he served in the Army Air Corp in the Pacific Theater during the 1940’s and retired from the military intelligence reserve as an officer in 1950.

On May 30, 1948, he was united in marriage with Georgia Soteropulos in Ottumwa, IA. The couple lived in Sioux Falls where Chris was self-employed in the restaurant business for many years. He retired in 1990.

He was a member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church where he served as chairman of every major committee, and past president of the Church, and was a member of the Order of AHEPA. He was also a past president of Sioux Falls Kiwanis East, on the Advisory Board of McKennan Hospital, and was on the Advisory Board of the National Bank of South Dakota, South Branch. He was on the Board of Directors of the Augustana College and Sioux Falls College Booster Clubs. He is a past president of the South Dakota Restaurant Association, the Sioux Falls Restaurant Association and the Sioux Falls Quarterback Club.

Chris was honored with the Pop Warner Award from Augustana College for his work with young people. He also received the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service award in 1963, and Citizen of the Week in 1962 by the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. He was honored as Restaurateur of America in 1964 by the National Restaurant Association, received the Gold Plate Award for Outstanding Restaurateur for the State of South Dakota in 1970. He received the Kiwanian of the year award in 1974 and the Salute of Restaurateur Award of Florida State University in 1971. Chris received the South Dakota State Booster of the year in 1974 and the B’nai B’rith Sportsman of the year in 1971. For 15 years, Chris served along with Bob Burns in working for the Dakota Bowl, and he was the Chief Ambassador of the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce for two years.

Chris, known as the “Golden Greek” by many, was larger than life! His great passion for living was manifest in his wonderful sense of humor, his colorful stories, his formidable salesmanship and, above all, the compassion and sensitivity he showed for his fellowman. Chris had a huge heart and will be missed by all he touched

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Georgia of Sioux Falls; one daughter, Stephanie Johnson and her husband, Gary of Minneapolis, MN; one son, George Christopulos and his wife, Kate of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren; and three sisters, Kay Boosalis and her husband, John of Lincoln, NE, Daisy Till and her husband, Jack, living in California, and Eva Chandiles and her husband, George of Chicago, IL.

His parents preceded him in death.

Ramah Clawson, Sioux Falls, age 98, born February 10, 1904, in Sullivan County, Missouri to Ross L. and Nellie (Leas) Wilson, died May 20, 2002 in Sioux Falls. Raised and educated in Sullivan County, Mrs. Clawson taught school in a one-room county school.

After their marriage in 1925, she and Russell F. Clawson attended business college. During Mr. Clawson’s career with International Harvester Co., the family was transferred several times, bringing them to Watertown, SD in 1940 and to Sioux Falls in 1950. Mrs. Clawson worked for Montgomery Wards for over 15 years, retiring in the mid 1960s.

She then began an active avocation of volunteer work. Through RSVP, she donated countless hours of help to more than 25 community agencies including the VA Hospital who credited her with over 1300 hours of service, the Food Service Center, and several city offices. A 52-year member of the First Methodist Church, Mrs. Clawson was active in United Methodist Women and Tuck-A-Baches and helped with office records for several years. Her lifelong interest in genealogy lead to travel and contacts throughout the United States, several published journal articles, and a knowledge she shared with others as Registrar for DAR. She was an avid quilter who provided comfort and warmth to family and friends through the gifts of her quilts and love.

Mrs. Clawson was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, William and Robert Wilson; and a sister, Mabel Martin. She leaves a son, Richard Clawson, and his wife, Dell, of Darbun, Mississippi; two daughters, Mary Ann Harrison, and her husband, Albert, of Davis, California, and Jean Bourdon, and her husband, William, of Labadie, Missouri; seven grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

The family of Ramah Clawson thanks you for your support and presence today. An invitation is extended to join them at the funeral home for refreshments and fellowship following the funeral service.

Esther Florence Georgeson was born June 8, 1911 to Elmer and Margrethe (Jorstad) Georgeson near Freeman, SD. She grew up there where she attended country school.

As a young woman, she worked at the Telephone Exchange in Viborg, SD. She moved to Sioux Falls and worked at Sioux Valley Hospital in the laundry department. She later worked for John Morrell & Co. for 29 years, retiring in 1974.

She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and the Morrell Retirees Club.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sister, Verna Georgeson of Sioux Falls, SD; her sister-in-law, Lillian Georgeson, living in Oregon; a niece and caregiver, Connie Weber of Sioux Falls, SD; and several other nieces and nephews.

Steve Eldon Johnson was born January 22, 1951, at Dos Palos, CA, to Keith and Betty (Jones) Johnson. He was raised in Visilia, CA, where he graduated from Redfield High School.

He married his first wife, Joyce, in California. Steve, Joyce, and their two children lived in Oregon where Steve worked in warehousing.

Steve married Pamela Taylor on October 30, 1987, in Yakima, WA. Maintaining a deep love for each other, Steve and Pam made daily commitments to take care of each other. The couple moved back to California where he worked for his brother, Jeff, as a mechanic at Valle Vista Farms. Pam and Steve moved to Sioux Falls, SD, in 1993. Steve worked for Dakota Pork, and in 1996, began his career at Starmark where he was currently employed in the wood staining department .

He loved animals and particularly enjoyed his pet beagle, Sadie, and his cockatiel, Grasshopper. In his free time he liked doing yard work, landscaping and gardening. Steve deeply loved his children and was proud of them. A caring and compassionate person, Steve went out of his way to help people in need. His love for life and people will be forever remembered.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Pam Johnson, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Tisha Grover, son, Steve Johnson, Jr., one granddaughter, Emilie Grover; his father, Keith Johnson, Porterville, CA; two brothers, Jeff Johnson and his wife, Diane, Tulare, CA, Clay Johnson and his wife, Cassie, Visilia, CA; and his ex-wife, Joyce Johnson.
