Evelyn Sweetman
Died: Jul 09, 2002

Evelyn Mary O’Rourke died Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at Avera McKennan hospice. She was born on January 19, 1909 in Peno Township, Hyde County, South Dakota to Charles and Julia (Holmes) O’Rourke. She was baptized at Stephan Mission on February 21, 1909. She graduated from Highmore High School and Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls and then began working for the C.A. Wagner Construction Co. in Sioux Falls.
Evelyn was united in marriage with R.S. Sweetman on December 1, 1934 at the Stephan Mission, Hyde County. Following their marriage they lived in Sioux Falls and they had five children, two sons, Richard C. (Kathy) Sweetman, Sioux Falls, SD, Gerald P. (Mary Pat) Sweetman, Sioux Falls, SD; three daughters, Mary (john) Borman, Ft. Collins, CO, Sophie Anna (Malcolm) McConnell, New York City, Kathleen (Dr. David) Rothenberger, St. Paul, MN.
She was a member of St. Mary Church, St. Mary Alter Society, PEO Chapter AQ, Minnehaha Country Club, and La Quinta Country Club. Evelyn volunteered at Avera McKennan Hospital, the Children’s Care Hospital & School and other Sioux Falls organizations and was involved for several years in the Bob Hope Classic Golf Tournament in Palm Springs, CA.
Grateful for having shared her life are her five children, 11 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and two sisters, Lorna Tompter, Mesa, AZ and Alice Bleha, Miller, SD. She had a deep and abiding love for her family and friends and she will be greatly missed.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 am Friday at St. Mary Church. Visitation for the public begins at 1 pm Thursday, the family will be present to greet friends from 5:30 to 7:00 Thursday followed by a scripture service at 7 pm at Miller Funeral Home Main Avenue location.
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to the R.S. & Evelyn Sweetman O’Gorman Scholarship Fund or Avera McKennan Hospice Program.

Norman Larson
Died: Jul 09, 2002

Norman “Norm” W. Larson, 73, of Belle Fourche, died July 9, 2002, at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Hospital, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Norm was born August 24, 1928 at Naples, South Dakota to Elmer and Maggie (Babbler) Larson. He was baptized at Good Hope Lutheran church in rural Willow Lake, South Dakota. He grew up and attended school in Naples.

On March 18, 1952 he joined the Army and served in Korea until February 9, 1954 receiving the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Cold War Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was a lifetime member of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Post 3312; the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Post 25; and the American Legion Post 32 in Belle Fourche, SD.

He is survived by three daughters, Starla Pfeifer and her husband, Scot, and Shelly Roth, all of Sioux Falls, SD, Sharna Larson of Las Vegas, NV; one sister, Elnora Hovde of Clark, SD; two grandchildren, Libby and Logan Pfeifer; and one sister-in-law, Vi Larson. Also sharing the loss, eight nieces, six nephews, and the “Geritol Gang”.

His parents, Elmer and Maggie Larson; a sister, Eltha Hovde of Willow Lake, SD; and a brother, Kenneth Larson of Watertown, SD, preceded him death.

Gloria Brown
Died: Jul 11, 2002

Gloria Anne Brown, daughter of Orley V. and Anna Mae (St. John) Brown, was born August 31, 1940 in Minneapolis, MN. As a child, she lived on a farm near Vasa, MN. Gloria graduated from Bloomington High School and later attended St. Paul Bible College. She then worked in south Minneapolis, MN as a secretary.

In 1969, she moved to Sioux Falls, SD and later began working for the Minnehaha County Welfare Office where she continued to work until ill health forced her to retire.

Gloria will be remembered for helping others in need and her love for music and flower gardening. Some of Gloria's favorite songs are: "My Father Planned It All", "All That Thrills My Soul", "Oh God Our Help In Ages Past", "The Holy City", "In The Image of God", "By Life Or By Death", "He Became Poor".

Grateful for having shared her life are her sister, Carole Cairns and her husband Bill, New London, MN; three nephews, Kevin Cairns and his wife Beth, Eagan, MN, Rodd Cairns and his wife Holly, Northfield, MN, Paul Cairns and his wife Terri, Eagan, MN; an aunt, Evelyn Folstrom, Northfield, MN, and many cousins.

Her parents and an infant brother, Wade, preceded her in death.

James Brick
Died: Jul 12, 2002

James T. Brick was born in Vermillion South Dakota on May 27, 1918. He was a graduate of the University of South Dakota, with a B.S. degree in Business Administration and an LLB degree from the School of Law. Jim was awarded the USD School of Business Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1964. He was a veteran of WWII serving as a Captain and an assistant staff judge advocate from 1943 to 1946. Jim married Norma Jean Westre in September of 1951. They were divorced in 1983.

He is survived by three sons and their wives: Kevin and Calli Brick, Sioux Falls, SD; Kent and Sandi Brick, Mandan, ND; Kurt and Alcina Brick, Central City, SD; five daughters and their husbands: Karn and Rory Barth, Sioux Falls, SD; Kerri and Bob Ridenour, Dallas, TX; Kathi and Kent Fieldsend, Des Moines, IA; Konni and Brad Swenson, Sioux Falls, SD; Kaija and Brian Bonde, Sioux Falls, SD; one brother, William Brick of Peoria, IL; one sister, Kathleen Carlson of Vermillion, SD; 24 grandchildren, one great grandson and special friend Doris Reichert, Sioux Falls, SD.

Jim moved to Sioux Falls in 1953 when he joined the then National Bank of South Dakota, (formerly, First Bank of South Dakota, N.A.). He served as Vice President and Director of the bank’s statewide Trust Department for 27 years. During the period 1955 to 1980 he was also an Adjunct Professor of Business Law at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

In 1980, he accepted a position as Professor of Law at the University of South Dakota to teach Wills, Trusts, Estate Planning and Family Law. He retired from the professorship in 1987.

During the past 15 years, he was retained as a Trust Consultant in obtaining trust charters and establishing procedures for banks in Pierre, Mitchell and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Jim maintained a life-long commitment to civic, social, professional and religious organizations including, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks, State Bar Association and the Trust Division of the American Banker’s Association, to name a few.

While he will long be remembered for his involvement in numerous organizations and charities, his greatest legacy will be to the thousands of children served by the Children’s Care Hospital and School. In May of this year he received the Distinguished Service Award from Children’s Care Hospital and School, recognizing a lifetime of achievement and service to children. Jim served as a board member for the hospital and school as well as the Children’s Care Foundation, which he founded.

Marcella J. Davis Ignowski
Died: Jul 20, 2002

Marcella J. Davis Ignowski was born in York, Nebraska on January 1, 1927, to Arch and Ester Walker. She grew up and attended schools in York, NE. She was united in marriage to Leonard Davis on September 5, 1948, in York, NE. She taught school at Cambridge, NE, and 3rd grade at Lincoln Elementary in Sioux Falls, SD.

In January 1989, she married Ernest Ignowski in Sioux Falls, SD. Marcy loved playing bridge, traveling and working in her garden. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leonard, her parents and one son, Dr. William S. Davis.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Ernest Ignowski, Sioux Falls, SD, one son, Robert (Diane) Davis and two granddaughters, Lyndsay and Heidi Davis, all of Yankton, SD, one stepson, Jim (Julie) Ignowski and children Elizabeth and Joe, Ft. Collins, CO, one stepdaughter, Mary Jo Williamson (Eric) and children, Alex and Kathy of Rochester, MN, one special cousin, Minna Bednar, Menlo Park, CA, and two brothers, John Walker, Nebraska and William Walker of South Dakota

Dorothy Mortenson
Died: Jul 18, 2002

Dorothy A. Stone, daughter of Clark A. and Naomi (Martin) Stone, was born June 26, 1921, in Sioux Falls, SD. She grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School in 1941.
Dorothy began working for Wilson Transfer. During WWII she moved to California and worked for the County of Los Angeles.
On September 18, 1945, she was united in marriage to Marvin Mortenson in Los Angeles, CA. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls where Dorothy was a homemaker and loving mother. Her life centered on her family! She also found time to become involved in the community including being active in Linwood School's PTA and in the Sundown Opti-Mrs. Club. Dorothy was a long-time member of First Congregational Church.
Her life centered on her family! She spent her time shuffling kids from one place to another - not just her kids, but the whole neighborhood's kids. She helped raise a dog, a cat, an African lion, a Scarlet Macaw, lots of pigeons and rabbits and an occasional turtle or salamander. Her kitchen was a place where people were welcome and the cookies were always fresh.
Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Jody Slechta and her husband Lon, Mesa AZ; two sons, Jack and his wife Mary, Sioux Falls, Kim and his wife Lorie, Russellville, AR; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of other relatives and friends.
Her parents, husband, two brothers, one sister, and a great-grandchild preceded her in death.

The family of Dorothy Mortenson thanks you for your support and presence today. An invitation is extended to join them at the church for refreshments and fellowship following the memorial service.

Sharon Wulf
Died: Jul 21, 2002

Sharon Rae Wulf, 1724 Ponderosa, died at her home Sunday July 21st after a short battle with cancer.
Sharon was born on January 27, 1956 to Paul and Shirley Mae Beers of Howard, SD. On July 19, 1980, Sharon Married Mark Wulf in Sioux Falls, SD.
Sharon graduated from Howard High School, attended Northern State College, and graduated from Southeast Technical Institute. Sharon has worked for the City of Sioux Falls for over 20 years, the last 11 years at the Sioux Falls Police Department.
Sharon was very involved in her three sons sports activities, especially as statistician for all their teams. Sharon enjoyed taking photographs of family events.
Sharon is survived by her loving husband, Mark, and three sons, Michael, Nicholas, and Justin; her mother, Shirley Mae Beers, of Howard, SD; five sisters, Deborah (Donald) Plahn, Jasper, MN, Patsy Ann (Bob) Stevenson, Jamestown, ND, Marcia (Michael) Whitney, Highland Ranch, CO, Mary Kay (Lynn) Neuhardt, Lakeside, CA and Adele Beers, Sioux Falls, SD; four brothers, Dennis, Kim and Terry Beers, Howard, SD, Mark (Lori) Beers, Sioux Falls; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Genevieve Brady
Died: Jul 21, 2002

Born of a family rich in Sioux Falls history, Genevieve Zimmel was born January 28, 1903, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to William F. and Elizabeth (Bibbe) Zimmel. She moved with her family to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1912. She attended Washington High School. Genevieve was one of ten children.

She married Frank R. Brady on November 5, 1921, at Rock Rapids, Iowa. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls where she became a homemaker and loving mother. The family moved to Nebraska in 1935. Genevieve became active in several church groups at the Methodist Church there. They moved back to Sioux Falls in the early 1950’s. Frank died in 1976.

Genevieve was a charter member of the Southern Hills United Methodist Church, and a 50-year member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed needlepoint, embroidery, playing cards, and was a wonderful cook. In addition to maintaining large gardens throughout her life, Genevieve raised chickens on her property until the late 1970’s. Frank and Genevieve were loyal and dedicated parents. Hardworking and committed, she wholly dedicated her life to her church and family.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughters, Jane Peterson, and her husband, Robert, Sioux Falls, SD, Marian Cavanaugh, Dubuque, IA, eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Gretchen Songstad, Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, her son, James Brady, and eight brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

Robert Ness, Sr.
Died: Jul 22, 2002

Robert L. Ness, son of Louis and Anna (Skotvold) Ness was born October 20, 1938 in Worthing, SD. He grew up in Lincoln County, SD and graduated from Worthing High School in 1957. Robert then entered the Air Force serving from 1957 until 1961. He returned to the Worthing, SD area and began working at Greenlee’s Meat Packing Plant.

In 1964, he was married to Kay Jorgensen in Sioux Falls. The couple made their home at Wall Lake, SD until moving to Denver, CO where Robert worked in the meat packing business.

On August 31, 1974 he was united in marriage to Jane Brungardt in Arvada, CO. The couple later moved to Hill City, KS where they lived for several years. They then lived in Beresford, SD for a period of time before settling in Alcester, SD. Robert had been working for L.G. Everist before ill health forced him to retire. Jane preceded him in death on March 17, 1999.

Grateful for having shared his life are his two daughters, Toni (Jeff Joneson) Harrisburg, SD, Nichole Quist and her fiancé Patrick Murphy, Davis, SD; two sons, Edward Ness and his companion Melinda DeVries, Hawarden, IA, Robert Ness Jr. and his wife Lynn, Sioux Falls; five grandchildren, Brittney, Jared, Jenna, Reece and Steffanie; two brothers, Don Ness, Beresford, SD, Louis Ness, of Lithia Springs, GA; two sisters, Marlys Andal, Tea, SD, Shirley Cain, Hawarden, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

His parents, a brother, David, and a nephew, Michael, also preceded him in death.

Pearl Whisman
Died: Jul 22, 2002

Pearl E. Foster, daughter of Eli and Arva (Ballard) Foster, was born August 28, 1899 on the family farm west of Ellis, SD. She grew up in the Ellis area and graduated from Washington High School in 1917. Pearl then attended Nettleton Business College.
On June 2, 1921 she was united in marriage to Miley Whisman in Sioux Falls. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls where Pearl was a loving homemaker and wife.
In addition to homemaking, she also assisted Miley in operating several businesses throughout the years.
While living in California her only child Harold “Bud” Whisman died July 5, 1954 after an extended illness. Miley passed away that same year on December 18th. Pearl then sold their business and returned to Sioux Falls where she has lived since.
Pearl was a member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years, a 70-year member of the Order Of The Eastern Star, and volunteered for the Red Cross at the Veterans Hospital for over 30 years. At the age of 100 years, Pearl was asked to participate in a Centenarian Study by the Harvard Medical School. She loved playing bridge and had a passion for the Minnesota Twins baseball team.
Grateful for having shared her life are her niece, Kay (Loren) Fenstermaker, Sioux Falls; two nephews, Jerry Foster, Sioux Falls, Norman Foster, GA; and many other nieces and nephews.
Her parents, a brother, Roy, and a sister, Dorothy Hooker, also preceded her in death.

Dale Sall
Died: Jul 23, 2002

Dale Sall, son of Colbin and Helen (Waage) Sall was born December 22, 1914 in Round Lake, MN.

He married Clara Stout in Sioux Falls on September 1, 1960. Dale was employed by John Morrell & Co., Sioux Valley Hospital and Polar Cold Storage. He was a life-long member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Clara, of Sioux Falls; his daughters, Natalie (Jim) Nelson and Sara Rikansrud, both of Sioux Falls, Mary (Bob) Chermela of Hendersonville, NC; his sons, Douglas (Mary) Sall of Yankton, SD and Stephen Sall of Custer, SD; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Kenneth (Ella Mae) Sall of Worthington, MN; and one sister, Nina Elliott of Bradenton, Fl. And many nieces, nephews and close friends.

Harold Wingler
Died: Jul 23, 2002

Harold Freeman Wingler was born in Clayton, Indiana on April 20, 1920 to Jesse V. & Leona (Deem) Wingler. He attended most of his school years in Clayton, graduating from Amo, Indiana High School. After graduation, he worked at Curtis-Wright Industries in Indianapolis, Indiana as a tool & die maker before enlisting in the Army Air Force. He served during WW II. While attending Air Force Radio School in Sioux Falls, SD, he met Lois Ann Johnson of Shindler, SD. They were united in marriage on April 28, 1947. After leaving the military, he owned and operated a Phillips 66 garage and station. He graduated from Reppert Auction School in Indiana in August, 1948. He worked as a salesman for Dakota Auto Parts in Sioux Falls before returning to Indiana to live in May of 1951. There he worked for Link-Belt as a tool & die maker. At the same time, he established himself in the auction business. In 1958, he returned with his family to Sioux Falls where he worked as a machinist for Sioux Steel and Raven Industries, while he started Wingler & Son's Auction, where he was active until his death.

He served as Sioux Falls Public Works Commissioner from 1978 to 1983. He was an active member of First Baptist Church where he served in a variety of positions. He also spent time traveling with Faith at Work Teams. He was the first Chairman of the Board of the Glory House in Sioux Falls; he was instrumental in the establishment of the Firehouse Coffeehouse, and served on the Board of Directors for the Children's Home Society. He was president of the Eugene Field PTA and was awarded a lifetime membership. He has served as Commander of the Harrisburg American Legion. He was active for many years in the downtown Lions Club of Sioux Falls as well as the Elks Lodge.

Harold was an avid fan of Southern Gospel music and enjoyed singing along! He had a very big heart and befriended everyone he met. People always knew if they ever needed a helping hand, all they'd have to do is ask! He was a huge supporter of his family and was happiest at family gatherings. Hunting, fishing and God's great outdoors were among his favorite things. He was a wonderful husband, a great father and grandfather. He will be missed very much!

So very grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lois; sons, Dale (Cathy) Wingler, Mankato, MN, Terry (Karen) Wingler, Gerry (Susie) Wingler and daughter Debbie (Byron) Johnson, all of Sioux Falls, SD; 14 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren; sister-in-law, Opal Huckfeldt, Canton, SD. Residing in Indiana is his son, Harold Wayne (Connie) Wingler; daughter, Pat (Roy) Oliver; brothers, W.P. Wingler, H. L. (Elizabeth) Wingler, Jesse (Jean) Wingler; and sisters, Beulah (Bob) Burcham and JoAnn Noble along with many nieces and nephews.

Illa Hunt Harris
Died: Jul 24, 2002

Ila Hunt Harris died Wednesday evening at Avera McKennan Hospital from complications of congestive heart failure. She was born in Carthage SD on February 15, 1927, the seventh and youngest child of India and Ored Ohlson. She graduated from high school in Carthage in 1944 and enrolled at Augustana College in the fall of 1945. There she met Jack Hunt whom she married on July 26, 1947 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage.
After her three children had begun elementary school, Ila became the secretary at Horace Mann School. Through her work there she welcomed and mothered two generations of children and their parents, as well as scores of teachers, for 29 years. After her retirement, she served as a valued volunteer in the McKennan Hospital Hospice Unit, as well as at Hope Lutheran Church, where the Hunt family had been charter members.
In 1985 after 37 happy years of marriage, Jack died of lung cancer. In 1990 Ila married John Harris, and the two enjoyed 12 fine years together.
She deeply treasured her friendships with neighbors and others she shared time with in church and school activities, dance club, bridge club, quilting group and volunteer work in the community.
Ila was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Verne and Wallace, and her sisters Elvira, Ellen and Celia.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her husband John, her brother Glen (Dorothy) Ohlson of Sun City, FL; two daughters, Roberta (Tim) Hunt Heaney of St. Paul, MN and Becky (Jack) Carmody of Sioux Falls; a son, Steve (Barb) Hunt of Seattle, WA; a stepson, John (Lisa) Harris of Oakland, CA; two stepdaughters, Barbara Harris of Mesa, AZ and Paisley (John Morris) Harris of Minneapolis, MN; her loving grandchildren Jackie, Megan, Joe, Kevin, Michael, Brook, Roxie, Jack, Mark, Andy and Sylvia; and her great granddaughter Josie.
Ila was a devoted parent, a loving spouse, and an ever-faithful friend to those many individuals whose lives she touched.
Memorial services will be 1:00 pm Monday at Hope Lutheran Church. Prayer service and visitation will begin at 5 pm Sunday at the church. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be directed to Hope Lutheran Church, Teachers Scholarship Fund of the Sioux Falls Area Foundation, Children’s Inn, the Banquet or the Washington Pavilion. Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Albert Egger
Died: Jul 25, 2002

- Albert E. Egger passed away Thursday, July 25, 2002 at Good Samaritan Luther Manor. He was born on June 21, 1911 at Colton, South Dakota, the son of Chris and Ursula Egger. He graduated from Washington High School in 1927 and began working for Hassenstein Steel Company that same year. He founded Egger Steel Company in 1946 and served as Chairman of the Board at the time of his death.
Al married Marion E. Olson on October 12, 1935 in Sioux Falls. He is survived by his wife and two children; son Stephen E. and his wife Kristine of Sioux Falls and daughter Kathryn E. Schmidt and her husband Sam Luoma of Palo Alto, California. He has three Grandchildren- Lisa Egger (Kelly Davis) of Boulder, Colorado, Jeannie (Burke) Blackman of Boulder, Colorado and Anne Egger of Bluff, Utah. Al is also survived by a brother, Ervin Eggers of Bakersfield, California. He was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.
He was a life long member of First Presbyterian Church and served the church in many capacities over the years. He was also active in numerous Masonic and Shrine activities and served as Potentate of El Riad Shrine in 1964 and as the President of the Midwest Shrine Association in 1975.
Al served on the board of First National Bank in Sioux Falls for many years and was currently on the Minnehaha Banshares board. He served as Chairman of both the Sioux Valley Hospital and Sioux Valley Hospital Foundation boards. He was General Chairman of the United Way in 1957 and served as President of the YMCA Board of Directors from 1968-1971. He served the steel industry as a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Board and as Chapter President of the Steel Service Center Institute (SSCI). He was named to the South Dakota Highway Department Hall of Honor in 1986. He was a member of and served on the Boards of numerous other organizations in the community and throughout the state. He was a firm believer in giving back to the communities and organizations which had enabled him to make his living. Albert and Marion were named South Dakota Philanthropists of the year in 1991.

The funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am Monday with Interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will be present to greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 Sunday afternoon at Miller Funeral Home, Main Avenue location.

Memorials may be directed to the Egger Research Development Institute of the Sioux Valley Foundation or the Sioux Falls Family YMCA.

Viona Corbett
Died: Sep 04, 2002

Viona Sorenson, the daughter of Nels and Katherine Sorenson, was born December 3, 1900, at Colman, SD. She grew up in the area, attending country school and then South Dakota State University for one year.

On April 26, 1923, she was united in marriage with O. A. Corbett, Jr. in Sioux Falls, SD. Viona was employed at John Morrell and Company for 30 years. She worked in the sausage-manufacturing department, retiring in 1966. While at Morrell’s and after retiring, Viona also worked part time at the VFW, The American Legion, the 40 & 8 and the Elks Lodge. Mr. Corbett preceded her in death in 1991.

She had been a member of First Lutheran Church since 1928.

Her parents, four sisters, three brothers, and her two sons, Vernon in infancy, and Keith at age 20, also preceded her in death.

Grateful for having shared her life are many nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends.

Virginia Jewell
Died: Sep 04, 2002

Virginia L. Jewell was born Oct. 23, 1931 in Sioux Falls to John and Minnie Walkins.

She graduated from Washington High School in 1949 and graduated from Nettleton Community College on Jan. 2, 1954. She was united in marriage to Donald S. Jewell and they made their home in Sioux Falls. She worked for US West for 38 years, and drove school bus for nine years part-time.

Virginia was a member of the Women of the Moose and also a telephone pioneer. She enjoyed bowling, needlepoint, computers and was also an All State Catcher in fast pitch softball, batted over .400. She also enjoyed time with her grandkids and great grandson.

Survivors include her husband, Don; sister, Jean (Bob), Schubert, CA; brother, John (Jack) Walkins, TX; sons, Bart (Cindy), CO, John (Karen), CO; daughters, Lisa (Scott) Bass, Sioux Falls, Lori Jewell, Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren, Chad (Lori) and great grandson, Anthony, Shawna, Jerrod, Joshua, Lucas, Austin Pibal, Dallas Bass; numerous nieces and nephews and many special friends; and her canine girls, Susie and Spunky.

Her parents, John and Minnie (Hyser) Walkins preceded Virginia in death.

Merle Renli
Died: Sep 07, 2002

Merle G. Renli, age 86 of 2403 W. 46th St. Sioux Falls, South Dakota, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, September 7, 2002 at Avera McKennan Hospice.
He was born December 4, 1915 in Canton, SD. On September 11, 1937 Merle was united in marriage to Arley Skabrud. They lived most of their married life in Sioux Falls. Merle served in the US Army during World War II.
Merle was a 30-year veteran of the Sioux Falls Police Department until he retired in 1975 at the rank of Lieutenant. He was an active member of 1st Lutheran Church for 61 years, serving as an usher for 20 years and President of Men in Mission in recent years. He also served twice as President of the Fraternal Order of Police, was on the Board of Directors for the Sioux Empire Federal Credit Union, and was a member of the American Legion, SF Historical Society and the Min-I-Kota Camping Club. He enjoyed golf, playing pool, horseback riding, flower gardening and the outdoors. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Arley; his children, Janice and Leo Thomas of Parkston, SD, Dennis and Thais Renli, Carole and Lester Duerksen, David and Bobbi Renli, Mary and William Stoddard all of Sioux Falls, SD; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a sister, Wava Reason of Felton, CA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and four sisters.

Agnes Myklebust
Died: Sep 08, 2002

Agnes Lee was born June 13, 1907 at Pierpont, SD. She was raised on a farm near Pierpont. Agnes attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls where she met Arthur Myklebust. The couple were married on June 21, 1933 in Pierpont. Upon receiving her teaching degree from Augustana, she taught in a one room school near Pierpont. She and her husband lived in Council Bluffs, IA and Fisher, MN before moving to Sioux Falls in 1939. Arthur was the superintendent of the School for the Deaf for many years, and Agnes worked along with him. In retirement, the couple continued to live in Sioux Falls. Arthur preceded her in death on May 13, 1978. In 1999, Agnes moved to Minneapolis, MN where she was living at the time of her death.

Surviving relatives include her two sons, Robert Myklebust of Walkersville, MD, and John Myklebust, of Pasadena, CA; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John Lee, Henry Lee, and Edward Lee; and her sisters, Mabel Nygaard and Marie Flagstad.

Eva Block
Died: Sep 10, 2002

Eva Marianna Sichmeller Block was born June 27, 1913 on a farm in Grenville, SD. She is the daughter of Angela Gaikowoski and John Peter Sichmeller, both of polish and German descent. John was only 6 when he came to this country. Eva had 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
She was baptized and raised in the Catholic faith. She attended grade school in Grenville, SD. As a teenager, she helped with many of the farm chores, milked cows, and drove a farm tractor plowing the fields.
In 1932, she met Frank Ben Block. On November 14, 1933, they were married in the Grenville Church. After the wedding, the couple settled on a farm nearby. Eva spent her young adult years as a homemaker, taking care of her children and family.
She says: “You can’t beat life on the farm! Every day brings something new, different and exciting. It was hard work, but rewarding”. Eva still had a green thumb. She tended to her flowers on the north side of her apartment.
Eve and Frank had four children; one son, Leonard, and his wife, Joyce who farm near Canton. Three daughters; Eleanor who lives in Forest Lake, MN and is widowed from her husband, Kenneth. Angie and her husband, Richard, have retired to the Mesa, AZ area. Artilda and her husband, Don live in a country home between Brandon and Sioux Falls. Eva has 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.
In 1949, they moved to a house in Sioux Falls. Eva went to work for Manchester Biscuit Company, and in the public school lunch program for a few years.
Eve loved sociability. They celebrated their 25th, 50th and 60th anniversaries. She had hoped they would make it to their 65th anniversary, but that didn’t happen. Frank passed away April 7, 1998 at the Good Samaritan Village. She says: “But we made to to 64 years and five months. That’s close”.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, Pete, Bernhard and Walter; two sisters, Rose Varholick and Amanda Balicki; her son-in-law, Kenneth Mullenix; and two grandchildren, Lana Kay Haffner, and an infant daughter, Anita Haffner.
