George Minier
Died: Sep 12, 2002

George L. Minier was born in Craig, Nebraska on February 24, 1923, to William and Cora Minier. He graduated from Craig High School, Craig, Nebraska, in 1940. George attended Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska for one year, taking advantage of a musical scholarship.

In 1941, he was hired at Harts Drug Store in Tekamah, working there until he enlisted in US Navy aviation in 1942. While living in Tekamah, George met Betty Phipps. They were married in August of 1943.

To this union were born George Minier, Jr. East Grand Forks, MN, Dianne Metli, Sioux Falls, SD, William L. Minier, St. Joseph, MN, Judith Minier, West Orange, NJ, Katherine Laate, Tulsa, OK, and Rebecca Sue Minier, Sioux Falls, SD. Also surviving George are six grandchildren and two great grandchildren, his brother, Tom Minier, Denver, CO and sister, Imogen Williams of Oklahoma City, OK. In addition to his wife, his sister, Harriet Hallett, precedes him in death.

George was in the retail management business, managing variety stores in Sidney, NE, Bayard, NE, Florence, CO, and Sturgis, SD. He next worked for a ladies-wear chain, spending 3 years at Crossroads Shopping Center in St. Cloud, MN, and at the Three Sisters Store in the Western Mall in Sioux Falls, SD.

Albin Gottlieb Schmeichel was born on March 31, 1931 in Marion, SD to Gottlieb and Adella (Hiebel) Schmeichel. After his father’s death, Albin continued to run the family farm. He married Alice Martha Schultz on October 9, 1952 in Canistota, SD and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.
Albin started his career as a mechanic in Mitchell, SD for International Harvester. In 1961, they moved to Sioux Falls where he was a highly regarded diesel mechanic for American Freight for 28 years. He also worked for Tomark Equipment and Friessen Construction, retiring in 1996.
His many talents were farming, building campers and racecars. In 1979, he completely built the home they reside in at West Acres Estates.
Albin and Alice raised seven children and enjoyed watching their children play softball, football and basketball. In his free time, he loved fishing on the Missouri River, hunting and traveling in the United States and Europe.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Alice, Sioux Falls, SD; three sons, Arlen (Debra) Schmeichel, Sioux Falls, SD, Arlo Schmeichel, Denver, CO, Arwin Schmeichel, Sioux Falls, SD; four daughters, Arlayne Schmeichel, Isanti, MN, Arla (Mark) Clyde, Sioux Falls, SD, Arlys (Gale) Paulson, Sioux Falls, SD, Arnell (Troy) Duncan, Brandon, SD; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; two sisters, Adeline (Gene) Buechler, Ella (Leonard) Van Emmerick. Albin will be greatly missed and was truly loved by all the lives he touched. His parents preceded him in death.

Dennis Puthoff was born September 4, 1944, in Sioux Falls, SD, to Lawrence and Celestine “Sally” (Roth) Puthoff. He graduated from Humboldt High School in 1963. and then worked for Schwartz Manufacturing.

Dennis was united in marriage to Mary Lou Rehfeldt on December 17, 1966. The couple moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he worked at Tom Sawyer, a division of John Morrell and Company. He transferred to Sioux Falls John Morrell where he worked in the pork cut division and the cooler. He retired in 1999, after 35 years with the company.

Dennis liked golfing, fishing, and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. In his free time, he liked reading and studying world history. Dennis also kept abreast with world affairs. In the center of his life was his family. He loved family gatherings and traveling with Mary Lou. His compassionate spirit and good hearted nature will be long treasured by his family and friends.

Loyd Wayne Aaron was born February 21, 1947 in Tyler, Texas to David and Opal (Sanders) Aaron.

His early working years were spent designing and fabricating machinery for oil drilling rigs around the world. He taught foreign nationals how to use and maintain the specialized equipment. He traveled extensively, with Malaysia being his favorite country. In South Dakota, Loyd worked for Harlan Jacobsen for 10 years. Loyd was a very special and caring man.

He married Jody Shaffer on May 4, 1999 in Flandreau, SD.

Survivors include his wife, Jody, of Sioux Falls; two daughters, Katie Aaron, age 11 and Beatrice Aaron, age 3, both of Sioux Falls; his sister, Jeanette (Harry) Engberg of Sioux Falls; and one brother, David Aaron, Jr. of Huntsville, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Edith DeLand was born August 9, 1909 at Long Pine, NE. She moved with her family to Huron where she received her education. She graduated from Huron High School, then attended Miss Woods School in Minneapolis, MN.

She was married to Albert R. Risty on October 26, 1940 in Watertown, SD. The family farmed in the Corson, SD area and also lived in Pierre during her husband’s 28 years in the Legislature..

Edith was an active member of Brandon Lutheran Church where she served for many years as church organist and accompanist. She was also active in many women’s groups within the church. Her husband, Albert preceded her in death on July 23, 1983.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Patricia S. Park, and her husband, Ron, of Sioux Falls, SD; her son, Elliott Risty and his wife, Jeri, of Sioux Falls, SD; 4 grandchildren, Mark Risty, Penny Sue Story, Lori Park-Smith and Juli Kinzer; 12 great grandchildren, Jason Gibson, Heather Park, Garth Oksol, Jason Story, Jami Story, Matthew Smith, Harrison Smith, Parker Smith, Sofie Kinzer, Jimmy Kinzer, John Kinzer and Mike Kinzer; and 4 great great grandchildren, Sydney Gibson, Samuel Gibson, Kallista Story, and Grace Oksol.

In addition to her husband, Edith was preceded in death by her father, Adelbert DeLand; her mother, Philena Jane DeLand; a brother, George Edgar DeLand; a grandson, Terry P. Park; a granddaughter, Ruth Dorothea Risty; twin great granddaughters, Anne Elizabeth and Sarah Jane Kinzer.

Everrett Hohn
Died: Jan 29, 2003

Everrett “Buck” Hohn was born December 28, 1946, in Mitchell, SD. He lived with his family in various South Dakota communities. He graduated from Lyons High School. Following high school, Buck entered military service where he served in the Navy in Viet Nam for four years. Upon receiving his honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to the area and worked in diesel mechanics, first for Shehan Equipment Co. and, for the past 28 years, for the J.D. Evans Equipment Co.
On June 16, 1967, he was united in marriage with LaVonne White at St. George Catholic Church in Hartford, SD. The couple has lived in the Renner area for most of their married life. Buck was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church and the Renner American Legion Post.
Buck loved his grandchildren, and was known as “Pa” to all of them. His grandchildren and family were a very important part of his life. He enjoyed building street rods in his garage, and was a member of the Siouxland Streetrodders Association. He also held memberships in the MSRA and the SDSRA. Buck was a South Dakota Eastern Chief Safety Inspector for the National Street Rod Association. He always valued his friendships and time spent with his friends in the Streetrodders Associations. The light of his life was his 1934 Dodge street rod, which he built himself.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, LaVonne, of Renner, SD; his son, Robert Hohn and his wife Susan and their children, Ashley and Donovan, of Renner, SD; his daughters, Lisa Wolff and her husband Tom, and their child, Kadin, of Sioux Falls, SD, and Melissa Claymore and her children, MaKayla and Joan, of Crooks, SD; his parents, Wilfred and Lillian Hohn, of Sioux Falls, SD; his brothers, Alan Hohn and his wife, Genie, of Galt, CA, Rodney Hohn and his wife, Diane, of Wakefield, KS, Kevin Hohn and his wife, Guyla, of Sioux Falls, SD, and James Hohn of Aberdeen, SD; one sister, Brenda Rysavy and her husband, Bob, of Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Donald White, and a good friend, Jim Keyman.

Leone Hoff
Died: Jan 29, 2003

Leone Boulais was born December 1, 1919, at Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Herb and Katherine (Thieman) Boulais. She graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1938, and later that year graduated from Aberdeen Beauty School. She married Richard Bakewell in 1940. The family lived in various communities.

On June 11, 1951, Leone married Leslie Hoff at Webster, SD. The family lived in South Dakota and North Dakota communities. They moved to Sioux Falls, SD, in 1976, where Leone became a homemaker and childcare provider. To her, it was a labor of love.

She retired from childcare in 1986. Leone and Les enjoyed traveling to Arizona during the winter months, and had thoroughly enjoyed trips to Alaska. Les preceded her in death on September 15, 1996. In her free time, Leone enjoyed needlework. Her nurturing and caring spirit will be missed by her family and all that know her.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, Michael Bakewell, Sioux Falls, SD, George Bakewell and his wife, Kim, Wahpeton, ND, William Hoff and special friend, Rhonda, , Sioux Falls, SD, Robert Hoff and his fiancée; Lisa, Sioux Falls, SD, her daughters, Linda Tempel and her husband, Lawrence, Brookings, SD, Margaret Snover and her husband, Richard, Watertown, SD, Patricia Oakland and her husband, Richard, Sioux Falls, SD, sister, Ethel Renfrow, Sun Lakes, AZ, sisters-in-law, Donna Hanson and Ann Boulais, 13 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to Les, she was preceded in death by brothers, Alfred, Floyd, Lloyd and Roy, and sisters, Hazel, Pearl, Ellen and Mary.

Alice Sandvig
Died: Jan 31, 2003

B. Alice Haugen (Alice) was born on April 1, 1896 on the original Haugen homestead in Sverdrup Township north of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was the eldest child of Albert Haugen and Annie Nyhus. She was educated at the Moen School through the 7th grade, after which she was employed as a nanny and live in housekeeper in and around Baltic, South Dakota. She went to work for Sievert Sandvig and his son Herman in 1913, and later married Herman on 10/2/1915. From the time of their marriage until 1920, Herman and Alice ran the farm with Herman’s father. While on the farm, three of their four sons were born; Spencer in 1916; Kenneth in 1919, and Raymond in 1920. After spending a year in Dell Rapids, they moved to Sioux Falls where their youngest son Virgil was born in 1924. She and Herman and the boys lived and worked at a variety of occupations throughout the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s on the eastside of Sioux Falls.

Alice’s husband Herman suffered a series of strokes and passed away in September 1958 after 43 years of marriage. She moved in with her sister Alma and they lived together until 1969 when Alice moved to Arlington Heights, Illinois to live with her eldest son Spencer. She remained there for 20 years and enjoyed keeping house for Spence and playing cards with the ladies in the neighborhood. She was 93 years old when she returned to Sioux Falls and entered the Good Samaritan Village in November, 1989. She resided at Good Samaritan Village until she died on the afternoon of January 31, 2003 at the age of 106 – a life that touched three centuries.

Through the years, Alice worked lovingly to raise her four rambunctious sons, as well as care for her husband, siblings, and extended family.
She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and instilled a tremendous sense of personal responsibility, pride, and love of life to her four boys as well as their offspring. She found strength and community through her association with the Eastside Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights, and the many activities and religious services available to her at Good Samaritan. Alice will be remembered for her strength of purpose, her outgoing personality, and her love of presents.

Thankful to have shared her life are her four sons Spencer (Ruth), Kenneth (Merle), Raymond (Barbara) and Virgil (Janet); 15 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, one son (Kenneth), and two daughter’s in law (Ruth and Janet).

All gifts on her behalf should be directed to the Center for Western Studies.

Joseph Perez
Died: Jan 31, 2003

Joseph F. Perez was born on August 24, 1931, at Providence, RI, to Joseph and Viola (Haskins) Perez. At age 17, he entered the US Army. Following his honorable discharge from military service, Joe lived in California, Utah and Oregon.

He moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1974, where he began his career with Midwest Coast Trucking.

He married Emma Jane Grimes on March 30, 1982, in Sioux Falls, SD.

Joe enjoyed riding his motorcycle and cherished spending time with his grandchildren. In his free time, he liked playing games, cards, and taking his grandchildren to Falls Park. He thoroughly enjoyed visiting with people and always made a point of stopping to say hello to people he would see along the way. Joe was always willing to lend a hand to people less fortunate or in need of help. His friendly and outgoing spirit will be long remembered by all that knew him.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Emma Jane Perez, Sioux Falls, SD, sons, Arnold Perez, Portland, OR, Joseph Perez, Salem, SD, David Moore and his wife, Cheryl, Jesup, IA, daughters, Linda Johnson and her husband, Rich, North Pole, Alaska, Carol Ann Perez, Sandy, Utah, Debi Smith and her husband, Mike, Springville, IA, Sharon Ransford and her husband, Don, Robins, IA, 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, brothers, Albert Perez, "Duke" Perez, Raymond Perez, Harold Perez, Ronny Perez, and his sister, Tina Casey, all of Rhode Island. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane L. Novak, grandson, Michael Merkling, brother, Rick Perez, and a sister, BoBo Burgess.

Norman Wieman
Died: Feb 04, 2003

Norman Dean Wieman was born December 15, 1946 in Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up in the Monroe, SD area where he received his education, graduating from Monroe High School in 1964. He attended Dakota State University, receiving a business degree in 1969.

Norman taught at Nettleton College in Sioux Falls for 15 years. He also did tax work, inventory work and bookkeeping for area businesses for many years. At the time of his death, he was working as business manager at F&H Jewelry Repair in Sioux Falls.

He is survived by his mother, Goldie Wieman of Marion, SD; a special friend, Vi Busch, of Sioux Falls, SD; three sisters, Glenda (Rev. Daryl) Vetter of Portage, MI, Carol (Lynn) Husby of Sioux Falls, SD, Gloria (Norm) Buck, of Crooks, SD; three brothers, Al (Diane) Wieman of Madison, SD, Randy Wieman and Dave (Jill) Wieman, both of Sioux Falls; eight nieces, four nephews, and a host of friends.

Norman was preceded in death by his father, Hilbertus Wieman.
