Jeremiah Michael Kiggins
Died: Mar 28, 2003

Jeremiah Michael Kiggins, 5 month-old son of Mike Kiggins and Giesella “Gigi” Glammeier, Canistota, SD, died March 28, 2003, at Sioux Valley Hospital.

Survivors also include his sister, Julie Kiggins, Canistota, SD; grandparents, Ron and Mavis Kiggins, Harrisburg, SD, Nancy Glammeier, Dell Rapids, SD, Mark Glammeier, Sioux Falls, SD; great-grandparents, George Riecke, O'Neil, NE, Don and Maxine Brown, Dell Rapids, SD, Ray and Gretchen Glammeier, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Malcolm Schliemann
Died: Mar 31, 2003

Malcolm W. Schliemann, son of Carl and Lulu (Irish) Schliemann, was born October 12, 1916 in rural Hartford, SD. He grew up and received his education in the Hartford area.

On July 15, 1940 he was united in marriage to Myrline M. Young in Rock Rapids, IA. The couple lived in that area for a short time before settling in Sioux Falls, SD where he worked at John Morrell & Company. Malcolm entered the Army in 1945 serving in the 89th Signal Operations Battalion. After the World War II, Malcolm returned to Sioux Falls and resumed his career at John Morrell. He retired in 1981 after 41 years of service. Myrline preceded him in death on June 1, 2002.

Malcolm had a love for music and played with various groups throughout the years. He loved to entertain and share his talents with friends and family. He also enjoyed pitching horseshoes and was very proud that Myrline was a nine-time state Horseshoe Pitching Champion.

He was a member of the Golden Age Club and the Sioux Valley Horseshoe Club.

While Malcolm and Myrline courted and his military time away, the couple sent each other letters totaling 764. Mally sent 369 letters, 60 postcards, and Myrline sent 295 letters and 40 postcards. The longest letter was 70 pages, sent by Myrline. Malcolm enjoyed the letters and after her death he reread them all over 16 times.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Donald and his wife, Marlene, Sioux Falls, Milford and his wife, Shirley, Beavercreek, OH, Malvia Pritchard, Montrose, SD; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; sisters, Inda Phillips, Brandon, SD, Hazel Eggers and her husband, Earl, Sioux Falls, Gertrude Westendorf, Hope Limmer and her husband, Harold, all of Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends.

His parents; a brother, Carl; and sisters, Iva, Violet, and Helen also preceded him in death.

Howard Shreves
Died: Apr 01, 2003

Howard Bruce Shreves, was born November 15, 1913 in Lumberport, West Virginia, to Claude Shreve and Katherine Elliott. Dr. Shreves grew up in Centerville, SD. He graduated from the University of South Dakota Medical School where he was a member of the honorary medical fraternity, Alpha Omega Alpha. After receiving his M.D. from Rush Medical College in Chicago, he completed a surgical residency at Cook County Hospital. In 1941, he married his college sweetheart, Elizabeth (Libby) Adams of Sioux Falls.
He then trained at the University of PA Medical School to perform upper limb neurosurgical repairs. During World War II, Dr. Shreves served in the U.S. Army as a neurosurgeon at Kennedy General Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
Dr. Shreves returned to South Dakota in 1946 as one of the first board-certified surgeons in the state. He was in private practice in Sioux Falls until 1980. He was very proud that he never sent a patient’s bill to a bill collector, and was often paid for his services with bags of farm produce or food. He served on the USD Medical School teaching staff and performed outpatient surgery at the Sioux Falls Veterans Hospital until he was 83 years old. He received the Golden Staff Award from the USD Medical School for his 50 years of service, and was a member of the SD Medical Assn. for over 50 years.
Dr. Shreves enjoyed his membership in Rotary Intl., and rarely missed a meeting. He was the State Chair of the Republicans for Lyndon Johnson in 1964, and State Chair of the Republicans for McGovern in the 1960s. He also served on the board of the Sioux Falls Symphony. Although never formally trained, he loved classical music and Broadway musicals, and encouraged all of his children to develop their musical talents.
A high school and college athlete, Dr. Shreves was an avid bicyclist and fitness advocate, and was often seen on the bike path along the Sioux River. He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish, and was a longtime member of the Audubon Society and Ducks Unlimited.
Dr. Shreves earned a commercial pilot’s license. An adventurer, he piloted his own plane all over North America, from Alaska to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. His children recall many exciting flights, sailboat voyages on Lewis & Clark Reservoir, the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, and the Pacific coast, and canoeing, boating and camping trips on the South Dakota lakes and rivers.
His first wife, Libby, preceded Dr. Shreves in death. At the age of 87, he married his longtime friend Verna Ahern. He is survived by his wife, and sons and daughters-in-law Bruce and Jackie Shreves (New Orleans LA), John and Vickie Shreves (New Orleans LA), and Dr. Thomas Shreves (Iowa City, IA); daughters and sons-in-law Patricia Saracco (Brawley CA), Helen Shreves (Denver CO), Angela and Gary Spadafore (Phoenix AZ), Margaret and Bill Marshall (Minneapolis MN), Elizabeth and Jeffrey Bird (St. Louis Park MN), Mary and John Anderson (Willow AK), Teresa Shreves (Wellington, New Zealand), and Catherine and Thomas Bird (Minneapolis MN); 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Avera McKennan Hospice or Christ the King Church.

Virginia Stohl
Died: Apr 03, 2003

Virginia Peterson was born on July 18, 1912 in Rockford, Illinois, the daughter of Erland and Minnie Peterson. She graduated from Rockford High School in 1929 and worked in her family’s paint store for many years.

Virginia was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a life long resident of Rockford until three years ago when she moved to Sioux Falls to be with her daughter. She was very active in Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford as a volunteer and in her church circle. She will be remembered by her many cousins in Rockford and in her parent’s native country of Sweden. She enjoyed traveling and made several trips to Sweden with her husband and cousins.

Virginia married Carl G. Stohl on September 9, 1939 in Rockford. She is survived by her daughter Kris (Steve) Egger of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and a daughter-in-law, Connie Stohl Paige, of Newtown, Pennsylvania. She has four granddaughters – Amy (Todd) Bomberg of Encino, California, Lisa Egger (Kelly Davis) of Boulder, Colorado, Jeannie (Burke) Blackman of Sioux Falls, and Anne Egger (Clay Hamilton) of Aztec, New Mexico and one grandson – Matt (Carrie) Stohl of Columbus, Ohio. She has one great granddaughter – Brynn Bomberg of Encino, California. She was preceded in death by her husband (1974), her son Dick (1995) and her brothers, Carl and Marshall.

Ralph Russell White
Died: Apr 04, 2003

Ralph Russell White was born on May 14, 1924 to Reuben “Boots” and Mabel (Kindel) White in Correctionville, Iowa. He was the oldest of three sons. He passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls on April 4, 2003, at the age of 78, after a lengthy illness.
He attended the rural McCloud School by Hartford and then Humboldt High School. He served in the US Army in the famed First Calvary Division from 1946-1947 in the postwar occupation of Japan. He was a member of the Hartford Legion.
He was united in marriage to Dolores Hansen on June 7, 1950 in Worthington, Minnesota.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed his family, his friends and farming from which he retired in 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores; his three sons, Keven (Mary) of Hartford, Dennis (Juleen) of Sioux Falls and Tom (Michelle) of Crooks; his two daughters, Carol (Sean) Callahan of Hartford and Kristi (Greg) Staton of Sioux Falls; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Ralph was preceded in death by his mother and father and two brothers, Donald of Hartford, SD and Max of Portland, Oregon.

Ronald E. Dale
Died: Apr 04, 2003

Ronald E. Dale was born May 21, 1937 in Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up in Sioux Falls and received his education at Washington High School. Ron entered the U.S. Navy in January of 1955 and served on the USS Wisconsin as a 1st Class Machinist Mate. He received his honorable discharge in March of 1958.
He was united in marriage with Sharon Holiway on December 20, 1958 in Luverne, MN. Ron was a concrete finisher for over 40 years, retiring from D&G Concrete in 1999. The couple lived in the Sioux Falls area until 1979, at which time they moved to rural Humboldt, SD.
Ron was a friend to everyone he met. He was a hard worker, and enjoyed time spent in his shop making furniture from his stockpile of oak. He loved to visit with people and was always willing to help someone in need. Ron enjoyed collecting teapots. In his younger years, he enjoyed pheasant, deer hunting and fishing.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Sharon, of rural Humboldt; two sons, Kevin (Nancy) Dale of Humboldt, SD, and David (Penney) Dale of Sioux Falls, SD; one daughter, Denise Dale of Sioux Falls, SD; his mother, Ethel Dale of Garretson, SD; two brothers, Jim (special friend, Lisa) Dale and Dennis (Adeline) Dale, both of Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Ashley, Amber, Alisha, Toby, Tate, Tacy, Tess, Travis, Jessie, Nichole, and Matthew; and great grandchildren, Jayda, Nina, Shem, Haley and Tanner.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Dale.

Robert Schultz
Died: Apr 05, 2003

Robert William Schultz was born on February 26, 1931 in Butte, NE to Herman and Genevieve (Weber) Schultz. Robert grew up and received his education in Butte, NE.

He was united in marriage with Donna Minahan in Lake Andes, SD. Robert and Donna lived in Lake Andes, SD where he worked as a tax assessor/appraiser for Charles Mix County. Robert also worked in sales while living in Lake Andes. In 1988, they moved to Lake Wales, FL until 1996 when they moved back to Sioux Falls to reside. Donna preceded him in death on January 8, 2000.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Judy A. Olson, Greer, SC, Connie M (John) Jacoby, Sioux Falls, SD, Nancy J. (Ken) Johnson, Sioux Falls, SD, James R. Schultz, Lake Whitney, TX, Patrick (Sheryl) Schultz, Tolar, TX, and Jeffrey M. (Donna) Schultz, Dallas, TX; nine grandchildren; six brothers and 2 sisters.

Eva M. Hanson
Died: Apr 02, 2003

Eva M. Hanson, the wife of Gilbert Hanson, who preceded her in death in 1990. Eva was born in Clark County, SD on June 11, 1907 the daughter of Robert and Ellnora (Gruber) Stinson. She spent her formative years in the Clark and Flandreau areas.
She was united in marriage with Gilbert Hanson on May 6, 1926 in Sioux Falls. The couple farmed north of Sioux Falls for 50 some years. Eva also was employed at the Cataract Hotel and the Minnehaha Country Club for a number of years.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Merlin Hanson, Arden Hills, MN and Shirley Kalb, Hatboro, PA; sister, Azalya Southard, Port Orchard, WA; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold, in 1932, and a sister, Frances, in infancy.

Robert "Gilly" O. Gilbertson
Died: Apr 03, 2003

Sioux Falls ~ Robert “Gilly” O. Gilbertson, 74, of 400 S. 4th Ave. died Thursday April 3, 2003 at the Royal C. Johnson Veteran’s Hospital.

Robert O’Connor Gilbertson (Gilly), son of Carl B. and Angela (Goodwin) Gilbertson, was born October 19, 1928 at Luther Hospital in Watertown, SD. He attended elementary school in Mobridge, SD and at Immaculate Conception Church in Watertown, SD. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1946 before attending the University of South Dakota from 1946 to 1951.

Robert served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He served in Korea as a platoon leader for A company, 1st battalion, 35th regiment, 25th division. He was wounded in action on April 22nd, 1952. He then served as a post athletic officer until discharged in June of 1953. Robert resumed Law School at USD from 1953 to 1954 and then attended Creighton University Law School from 1957 to 1958.

Robert was primarily employed in sales for various companies and organizations until his retirement in 1985. Since 1991 he has been the telemarketer for Koehn Marketing in Watertown, SD

Robert was united in marriage with Shirley Anne Goodwin on June 7, 1962 in Minneapolis, MN. The couple moved to Bismark, ND where their daughter Tracy was born. The family later moved around before settling in Watertown, SD in 1978. He was a resident there until moving to Sioux Falls, SD in retirement in 1985.

He loved goose hunting with many, many trips to Pierre and Saskatchewan. He also loved golf, having started caddying in 1939 at Watertown Country Club, until physical handicaps prevented him from playing.

Grateful for having shared his life are; a daughter, Tracy Gilbertson, Sioux Falls; two sisters, Mary Larson and her husband, Edward, Huron, SD, Carol Pagones, Sioux Falls, SD and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

Alberta E. Lammers
Died: Apr 05, 2003

Alberta (Bertie) Eileen Lammers was born in Sioux Falls, SD on December 27, 1931 to Reuben and Mary (Moore) Reichelt and grew up on their family farm near Tea, SD. She graduated from Washington High School and later received her nursing degree from McKennan Hospital School of Nursing. In September of 1953 she was united in marriage to Arthur (Mel) Lammers and moved to Sioux Falls where she resided until returning to the Tea are from 1984 until present. She devoted her life to and found much joy in her children and grandchildren. The way she lived her Christian values was a positive influence on her family and others. She was a member of the Tea Historical Society and enjoyed learning about South Dakota history and researching family genealogy.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Arthur Lammers of Tea; brother Ervin Reichelt of Tea; sister Bonita Collins of Flandreau; children, Chuck (Techie) Lammers, Mary (Mike) Bills, Jim (Susie) Lammers, Greg Lammers, Robert Lammers and Richard Lammers; grandchildren, Jenn, Jess, Jimmy, Caitlin, Anna, Matthew and Jacob.

Bertie was preceded in death by her infant son Arthur and her parents.

John Soyer
Died: Apr 02, 2003

John Fred Soyer, "Johnny" to family and friends, was born on September 2, 1922, in Carroll, IA. He grew up and received his education there. At the age of 16, Johnny left the farm and began playing in big bands, traveling throughout the Midwest. During World War Two, Johnny served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war, he traveled throughout the country with the Jimmy Barnett Orchestra, the Johnny Soyer Orchestra and the Johnny Dale Trio.

On July 23, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mary Patricia Corbett in Luverne, MN. Jim, Sandi and Tim were blessed to have Johnny and Pat as their parents. The family returned to Sioux Falls in 1961. Johnny worked at Williams Piano and then began a new career with Minnegasco. Throughout the next forty years, on almost every weekend, Johnny continued entertaining people with his big band style music with many different musical groups. After his retirement from Minnegasco in 1988, he spent 12 years greeting and helping people at the McGreevy Clinic. Pat preceded him in death on September 20, 2001.

Johnny was a long-time member of Christ The King Catholic Church, the Elks, Moose, and the American Legion, and sang in all four choirs. He was a past member of his parish council, and head usher for many years. Johnny was also a member of the Fourth Degree of The Knights of Columbus, and served as Grand Knight. He was very involved with Knights of Columbus and was honored by its members with the Herb Bechtold Award, the Cletus Natz Knight of the Year Award, and the Frank Owens Award for council, church and civic activities. He and his family were also honored as the K.C. Family of the Year. He was also chosen King of the Mardi Gras, an annual event sponsored by the Knights.

Grateful for having shared his life are his sons, Jim and his wife Yolonda, Pierre, SD, and Tim and his wife Kim, Sioux Falls,five grandchildren; Gina (Jim) Penisten, Sioux Falls,Jordan, Tyler and Heidi Soyer, all of Sioux Falls,Nicole (Cole) Namken, Vilseck, Germany, a great-granddaughter Mary Grace Penisten, Sioux Falls, three sisters, Rose Soyer, Carroll, IA, Josephine Roles, Morris, MN, Trudy Mendel, Albany, NY, and many other relatives and friends.

His parents, his daughter Sandi, four brothers: Peter, Joseph, Albert, Tony and six sisters: Marie, Ann, Margaret, Clara, Emily and Bertha also preceded him in death.

Leon Gardner
Died: Apr 04, 2003

Leon Gardner, son of Leo and Virgie (Teeslink) Gardner, was born June 15, 1960 in Canton, SD. He grew up on a farm near Inwood, IA and attended West Lyon High School. Leon then entered the U.S. Army serving for eight years. He then lived in Alabama for a period of time.

After moving to Sioux Falls, SD in 1994, Leon began working for Country View Mobile Homes. He also operated his own business, “Mr. Mobile Home”. Leon was presently working for Soukup Park. He married Joni Huber on January 24, 2001 in Las Vegas, NV.

Leon attended Peace Lutheran Church and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Joni; a son, Charles of Alabama; step-children, Stuart and Reanna Huber, Sioux Falls; his parents, Virgie Gardner, Huron, SD, Leo Gardner, Canton, SD; four sisters, Brenda Ethridge, Pierre, SD, Lori Gardner, Inwood, IA, Lisa Gardner, Huron, SD, Sara Gardner, Beloit, IA; two brothers, Ray Gardner, Canton, SD, Terry Gardner, Yankton, SD; his grandmother, Eva Enstad, Canton, SD; his grandmother in-law, Eunice Mattson, Kenmare, ND; and a host of other relatives and friends.

His maternal grandfather, paternal grandparents, and a brother, James, preceded him in death.

Cindy "Frier" Cordes
Died: Apr 05, 2003

Cindy Frier was born October 22nd, 1963 in Sioux Falls, SD. She grew up in Sioux Falls graduating from Washington High in 1981. She was employed at Hutchinson Technology for 12 years and for the last 5 years she has worked for Household Finance.

Words cannot do justice to Cindy, she was a loyal friend, daughter, sister and partner. Her family remembers her in these ways, dogs, dogs, and more dogs; loved to jet ski, full of energy, making people smile, great hugs, sense of humor, loved yard work, softball and was the glue that brought a lot of people together.

Cindy was a person who spoke what was on her mind and when she put her mind to it, she did it and did it right now!

Grateful for having shared her life is her partner, Tina Cordes, her mother, Mae Frier, a sister, Penny (Rick) Heyder and their children, Tara, Teresa, Shannon and Kyle, a brother Tom (Roxy) Frier and their son Lee, great nephews, Tara’s children, Taylen and Jordan,
And several aunts, uncles and many cousins.

Minnie (Mickey) Ysbrand
Died: Apr 07, 2003

Minnie Henrietta “Micky” Van Loh was born April 7, 1902, in Worthing, South Dakota, to Matthew and Dena (Bultena) Van Loh. She attended country school north of Lennox, South Dakota and assisted her parents on the family farm.

She married Edward Ysbrand in Sibley, Iowa, on March 11, 1936. Micky worked at John Morrell and Company while Ed served during World War II. In 1948, the couple moved to Waubay, SD, where they owned and operated ‘Ed and Ted’s Resort’. From 1958 to 1968,m the couple traveled throughout the state working construction. Following their retirement in 1968, they moved to Sioux Falls. Edward preceded her in death on March 21, 1987.

Micky was an avid rock collector. She loved nature and enjoyed feeding the birds, wild ducks and pheasants. In years past, she loved fishing with Ed at area lakes. Micky looked forward to summer months so she could tend for her beautiful flower gardens.
Micky had a tremendous personality that would lend itself quite easily to meet new friends. Her kind and warm spirit transcended the generations.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sister, Esther Naatjes, Sioux Falls, SD, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, five brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.

Elizabeth Sandvig
Died: Apr 07, 2003

Elizabeth Jane Spitznagel was born on November 29, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois, to Harold and Engla (Hanson) Spitznagel.

Betty was raised in Sioux Falls and attended Washington High School and Augustana College. She married Wesley Eugene (Wes) Sandvig, December 16, 1948. They made their home in Sioux Falls for 45 years, and lived two years in Rochester, MN, before settling in Arden Hills, MN, in 1976. Betty returned to Sioux Falls in 2000.

Betty worked for ten years at Fantle’s in Sioux Falls and continued working in the bridal registry at Dayton’s in Rosedale.

Betty faced life with optimism and good cheer. Her home was always open to family and friends. She was a constant source of encouragement and delight.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Craig (Lois VanderWaerdt) Sandvig, St. Louis, MO; Carol (Ken) Sandvig-Cornell, Chandler, AZ; Chris (Dave) Dummermuth, Sioux Falls, SD; Kari (Paul) Richardson, St. Louis, MO; sister, Molly (Jim) Walters, Vermillion, SD, brother, Steve Spitznagel, Spokane, WA; grandchildren, Elyse, Laura and Emily Richardson; niece, Erika Denton; special cousin, Dorothy Grevlos; and many special friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wes, who died November 30, 1995, her parents, and granddaughter, Bridget.
