Ivadell "Ivy" Doubek
Died: Apr 08, 2003

Sioux Falls ~ Ivadell (Ivy) Doubek, 72, of Sioux Falls, died Tuesday, April 8, 20003 at Covington Heights Nursing Home.

There will be no services or visitation.

Ivy was born September 20, 1930 in Sioux Center, IA. She graduated from East High School in Sioux City, IA. Ivy was a graduate of Lutheran School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA. She then graduated from Poly-Tech Clinic of New York City in Operating Room Management.

She was a Captain in the USAF Nurse Corp., for four years. She was employed by Sioux Valley Hospital and the Royal C. Johnson Veteran’s Hospital until her retirement in 1983.

She married Albert Doubek on June 25, 1959. They have resided in Sioux Falls since 1963.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister, Charlotte (Maynard) Frank, of Sioux City, IA; a brother, Robert (Marilynn) DeStigter, of Sioux City, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be directed to the Respiratory Rehab Center at the Sioux Valley Wellness Center. She was a participant there for the past six years.

Dorothy Kahler
Died: Apr 08, 2003

Sioux Falls, Dorothy M. Kahler, 84, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at Sioux Valley Hospital Centennial Hospice Cottage. She was born in LeMars, IA on August 16, 1918.
In May of 1940, Dorothy married Norman Kahler. She worked in the office at John Morrell and Company for many years.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Normandie Lynne Knudsen, and Nicolas Kahler, both of Sioux Falls, SD. In addition to her husband, a brother, Erwin Acker and a sister, Avis Olmstead preceded her in death.
Private family services will be held. Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Paul J. Hallem
Died: Apr 08, 2003

Paul Hallem, 2708 W. 33rd Street, died April 8, 2003, in Sioux Falls, SD. He was 77.

Paul Jerome Hallem was born in rural Roslyn, SD on January 17, 1926, the youngest of five children of Jonas and Christine (Aasen) Hallem. Paul attended school in rural Baltic and Baltic High School. At age 17, Paul joined the U.S. Navy to serve his country in World War II. Following the war, Paul returned to Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School. He worked for Dairyland Creamery while attending Augustana College. He graduated from Augustana in 1951. Paul was called back into active duty during the Korean Conflict. He received his honorable discharge in 1952.

On April 11, 1953, Paul married Lois Mae Boyle in Mitchell, SD. Paul and Lois lived in Sioux Falls where Paul started his 50-year career with Home Savings and Loan (Home Federal Bank), as an accountant. He worked in various positions and served as bank president from 1986 to 1991. He retired from the bank Board of Directors in June, 2002.

He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Westward Ho Country Club, Downtown Lions Club since 1959, and was a life member of the Elks Lodge 262, American Legion Post 15, and the Sioux Council Boy Scouts Board / Silver Beaver. He was also a past member of Jaycees, Director-Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines from 1988-1999, Good Samaritan Village Board for 12 years, Home Builders Association, Board of Realtors, Chairman of March of Dimes, Chamber of Commerce, and was elected to Board of Directors of Blue Cross of South Dakota and Western Iowa in 1982. (Through mergers it became I.A.S.D. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa and South Dakota, now know as Wellmark.)

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lois Hallem, Sioux Falls, SD, sons, Jeffrey Hallem (Darlene), Pierre, SD, Jon Hallem (Barbara), Port St. Lucie, FL; daughters, Christine Nielsen (David), Sioux Falls, SD, Karen Bergeson (Mark), Clear Lake, IA, Kathryn Schroeder (Mark), Sioux Falls, SD; sister, Belva Stone, Brookings, SD; grandchildren, Lori and Kelly, Amy, Emily, Mary, Sheryl and David, Alan and Jackie, Robert and Kelly, Melissa and Troy, Ty, Grant, Kelly, Nikki, Kayla and Kyle; great grandchildren, Joshua, Brandon, Tyler, Ethan, Kaleb and Kaden. In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his brothers, Oscar and Raymond, and a sister, Cora.

Visitation begins at 9:00am, Friday, followed by a Catholic Rosary at 6:30pm and a Parish Scripture Service at 7:00 Friday evening at Miller Funeral Home, 13th and Main Avenue. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00am, Saturday, at Christ the King Catholic Church, with interment following at St. Michael Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to Christ the King Catholic Church, Sioux Council of the Boy Scouts, or the SD Industries For The Blind c/o the Lions Club.

Carol L. Ross
Died: Apr 04, 2003

Dr. Carol L. Ross, 46, of 6907 W. 5th Place, died at her residence.
Carol was born February 5, 1957 in Washington D.C. She was currently serving her medical residency with the University of South Dakota Medical School.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Michael Patrick Schnitzer of Canyon, TX; her parents, James J. and Mary Ann Schnitzer of Tucson, AZ; one brother, LTC Eric J. Schnitzer of Texas, and Dr. Patricia Gail Schnitzer of Columbia, MO.
Memorial services will be 2:00 pm Saturday, April 12th at Miller Funeral Home, Main Avenue location.

Virgie Potas
Died: Apr 05, 2003

Edina, MN ~ Virgie E. Potas of Edina, MN, formerly of Sioux Falls, SD., died on April 5, 2003 at N.C. Little Memorial Hospice in Edina, MN., surrounded by her family after a courageous struggle with ovarian cancer. Virgie was born April 6, 1913 in Richmond, VA and moved to Sioux Falls, SD. at age 9. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Potas and daughter Connie Sue Pomykal. Virgie celebrated life to the fullest! She especially loved birds, crafts, playing games, and collecting! Her strength, courage, and zest for life amazed and inspired everyone who met her. She will be forever missed as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. Survivors include: 2 sons, Ronald (Roberta) Potas, Wayzata, MN.; Steven (Gayle) Potas, Prior Lake, MN.; Daughter, Dianne (William) Marks, Kansas City, MO.; Son-in-law Don Pomykal, Childress, TX.; 2 sisters, Jessie Roemer, El Toro, CA; Marjorie Nicholls, Lexington, S.C.; 8 Grand Children, 2 Great-Grand Children and many other friends and relatives.

A special thank-you to Fairview Home Care and Hospice and N.C. Little Memorial Hospice for all of their loving care. Visitation 2-3pm, Saturday, April 12, 2003 at Miller Funeral Home, Sioux Falls, S.D. with a graveside service to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Wanda Lewin
Died: Apr 09, 2003

Wanda L. Adams, daughter to George Bate and Emmer (Easly) Adams, was born October 26, 1904 at Hawarden, IA. The family moved north of Humboldt when Wanda was a child where she attended country school.

Wanda was united in marriage with Henry Lewin on March 1, 1921 at the Hartford United Methodist Church in Hartford, SD. They farmed in the Hartford area for several years. In 1932 they moved to Henry’s father’s farm on Grass Lake. In 1946 they left the family farm and moved to Sioux Falls. Henry worked in the construction of the veteran’s hospital in Sioux Falls, and maintenance at Fantles while Wanda worked at J.C. Penny’s. When the youngest son, Roger, was in a tornado in 1948, they returned to the farm to help. They retired to Humboldt in 1960. When Henry passed away in 1978, Wanda sold the house in Humboldt and moved to Hartford.

Wanda was a fifty-year member of Hartford United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and was a member of several bridge clubs, and various church groups.

She was playing King’s Corners two weeks ago and you can ask any of the grandchildren…she was hard to beat!

Grateful for having shared her life are; two sons, Kenneth “Bud” Lewin and his wife, Ardell, Hartford, SD, Roger Lewin and his wife, Ardy, Sioux Falls, SD; two daughters, Bonnie Viet and her husband, Earnest, Hartford, SD, Helen Lewin, Hartford, SD; 15 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son Batie Lyle Lewin; a grandson, Duane Lewin; four brothers; and two sisters.

Janice Leigh Johnson
Died: Apr 10, 2003

Janice Leigh Heyer was born January 4, 1942 in Madison, SD. She grew up in Madison where she received her education.

She was united in marriage with Lyle Johnson on September 28, 1959 at Pipestone, MN. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Madison until moving to Sioux Falls in 1965. Janice Leigh was a homemaker where she raised and cared for her family. She was always the “eternal optimist”, saying that everything happened for a reason and felt that if it was meant to be, then that’s how it would be. Janice Leigh would always look for the good in people, no matter what the circumstance. She was very good at crafts and loved to crochet. She enjoyed playing cards, and loved time spent with her family. Janice Leigh was extremely good at crossword puzzles and trivia. Her husband preceded her in death on April 6, 1992.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, Jamie Johnson and his wife, Bev, and Lonnie Johnson, both of Sioux Falls, SD; one daughter, Robin Wendt, of Sioux Falls, SD; three grandchildren, Kyle, Gayle and Shayne; and a special family friend, Gloria Lund, of Sioux Falls. Janice Leigh will be forever loved and greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and a half sister, Renée.

Verla D. Teply
Died: Apr 13, 2003

Verla Dean Katz was born on April 4, 1931, in Huron, SD to Paul and Lillian Irene Elma (Hein) Katz. She grew up and received her education in Huron and graduated from Huron High School.

On January 20, 1951, Verla was united in marriage with Elmer Teply. They farmed near Wolsey, SD from 1951 to 1961. In 1961, they moved to Sioux Falls, Verla worked at the Kings Tap as a bartender for 20 years.

Her pride and joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening and fishing.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Sandra (Alan) Taylor, Elko, NV, Robert (Vicky) Teply, Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Jennifer Walker, Michael Walker, John Paul Walker, Dustin Teply; great-grandchildren, Nicole, Haley, John Michael, Aubrey Madison; sisters, Fran Wulf, Mitchell, SD, Phyllis Buck, St. Louis, MO, Delores Stopplemdore, Solvang, CA; brothers, Robert Katz, Colorado Springs, CO, Alan Katz, Huron, SD, Eugene Katz, Huron, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, her parents and a brother, Donald Katz preceded her in death.

Evelyn Keller
Died: Apr 12, 2003

Evelyn Alice Hansen, daughter of Paul P. and Bertha (Hanson) Hansen, was born June 26, 1906 in Sioux Falls, SD. She grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School. With the exception of six months spent in Saranap, California, she lived her entire life in Sioux Falls.

She married Ivan Keller and they had three daughters and a son. They divorced in 1940. Evelyn worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for about 30 years and retired in the early 1960’s.

Evelyn enjoyed her flowers and spent many hours taking care of them. She also liked to take pictures of family and scenery. At least once a year she traveled to see her children and their children in Utah and California. After she retired, she did quite a lot of traveling throughout the United States. She also was involved in the Pioneer’s Hug-A-Bear program. Evelyn crocheted and knitted everything from potholders to beautiful Afghans for family and friends.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Lane Keller, Tea, SD; nine grandchildre0, Joe and Ronald, Sioux Falls, Scott (Michele) Westrup, Sioux Falls, Christopher (Kathy) Westrup, Crooks, SD, Mark Condie, West Jordan, UT, Marci (Charles) Gunnell, Cedar Hills, UT, Judy Condie, Carlsbad, CA, Lisa (Mark) Parker, Murray, UT, Theresa Toone (Kirk) Harper, Apache Junction, AZ; nine great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; special friends Addie Donaldson and Tina Fechner and a host of other relatives and friends.

Her parents; two brothers, Oliver and Ken Hansen; a sister, Elsie Hansen Conrad, three daughters, Jacqueline Keller Toone, Judie Keller Westrup and Patricia Keller Condie Biederman preceded her in death.

Evelyn’s family thanks you for your support and presence today. An invitation is extended to join them at the Dow-Rummel Village for refreshments and fellowship directly following the funeral service, before going to the cemetery.

Marlene Brodock
Died: Apr 12, 2003

Marlene Pearson was born November 1, 1932, at Garretson, SD to Henning and Mable (Thompson) Pearson. She graduated from Garretson High School.

Marlene married Donald Brodock on June 1, 1952, at Garretson, SD. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls, SD. Marlene worked at E.C. Olson Clothing as a bookkeeper.

She eventually became a homemaker and loving mother to her three children. In the mid 1970’s, she began her career as an independent research consultant. Don preceded her in death on May 27, 2002.

Marlene liked to cook and was very talented as a baker. A dedicated mother, she cherished caring for her family, and would always make sure her children and their friends had enough to eat. The family enjoyed camping and fishing and in their younger days, Marlene and Don liked to go hunting. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and was active in various groups including circle and Mothers Club.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Caring and thoughtful, Marlene was quick to fulfill the needs of others before her own. Her compassionate and tender spirit will be well missed by all that knew her.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, Kevin Brodock and his wife, Barbara, Colorado Springs, CO, Reed Brodock, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Kerri Brodock, Minneapolis, MN; and five grandchildren, Darin, Corey, Ross, Ryan and Erika. In addition to her husband, her parents preceded her in death.

Ed Duane Little
Died: Apr 13, 2003

Edward Duane Little Jr. was born March 16, 1979 in Sioux Falls, SD to Edward and Maria (Bruguier) Little Sr. Edward grew up and attended school at St. Joseph Indian School in Chamberlain, SD and in L’Anse Elementary School in L’ Anse, MI. The school in L'Anse, MI honored Edward by buying his sketchings and displaying them in the school. He took great pleasure in helping his mother raise his sisters children and being part of their life. He had much love for his family and friends.

Survivors include his mother, Maria Bruguier of Sioux Falls; his father, Edward Little Sr. of Pine Ridge, SD; one brother; Wayland G. Bruguier of Sioux Falls; two sisters, Danielle R. Voice and Babe L. Voice, both of Sioux Falls; nephews and nieces, Anthony S. Maximo, Rykel K. Maximo, Rory L. Little, Jennifer McMicheal and Jemal Berzati, all of Sioux Falls; grandmother, Roberta Bruguier of Sioux Falls; and his half brothers and sisters.

Edward was preceded in death by his sister, Edwina M. Little; grandmother, Phyllis Bald Eagle; and two grandfathers.

Nanette Louise Nygren
Died: Jun 08, 2003

Sioux Falls ~ Nanette L. Nygren, 59, of Sioux Falls, died Sunday, June 8, 2003 at Sioux Valley Hospital following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Nanette was born March 2, 1944 in St. Edward, NE to parents Betty and Floyd Nygren. Her early life was spent in the Cedar Rapids, NE area. She later moved to Newman Grove, NE with her parents where she graduated from Newman Grove High School. She then attended and graduated from Bryan Hospital School of Nursing, Lincoln, NE.

She enjoyed nursing, working with young people and traveling. Her nursing career took her to Minnesota, Washington, New Mexico, and Arizona.

Nanette is survived by her mother, Betty, Elk Point, SD; a brother, Nick (Judy) Nygren, Vermillion, SD; a sister, Sue (Doug) Iddings, Waconia, MN; 2 nieces, 3 nephews, and 1 great nephew.

She was preceded in death by her father, Floyd, and her grandparents, Alice and Martin Nygren, and Minnie and Hans Steiner.

Doris Stangeland
Died: Jun 07, 2003

Doris M. Pippet, daughter of John M. and Ethel L. (Pingrey) Pippet, was born on October 16, 1921 in Hartford, SD. She grew up there and graduated from Hartford High School in 1939. She attended college at General Beadle College, Madison, SD and then graduated from Sioux Falls College. She then began teaching at Wolsey, SD from 1941 to 1943.

Doris was united in marriage with Robert Doss on February 29, 1944 in Los Angles, CA. The couple lived in Missouri and Iowa until Robert’s death on April 10, 1961.
Doris then moved back to Hartford where she taught at West Central School.

She was united in marriage with Arnold Stangeland in December 22, 1966, in Hartford, SD. She continued teaching until her retirement in 1983. Even after retirement, Doris remained active in the community. In the early 1970’s, she had the honor of becoming the first woman mayor of Hartford. She also held the positions of Alderman, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Doris was a member of the Hartford Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Nocturne Circle.

She enjoyed making and selling wooden crafts with Arnold. The couple traveled throughout the upper-Midwest attending hundred’s of craft shows. Doris cherished spending time with her friends and family.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Arnold, Hartford, SD; a son, Craig E. Doss and his wife, Pam, Hartford, SD; a stepdaughter, Beverly Gath and her husband, Ron, Luverna, MN; a daughter-in-law, Sandi Doss, six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Bob Doss and her brother, Robert Pippett.

Robert M. Wyant
Died: Jun 09, 2003

Bob was born in the Sibley, Iowa hospital June 29, 1922 the son of Russell and Rozetta (McNerney) Wyant of Larchwood, IA. After graduating from Larchwood Public High School he attended the University of South Dakota until WWII and then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He became a B 24 Bomber Pilot, flying 35 missions against southern Europe and Romanian oilfields. He retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a Lt. Colonel.

Bob joined Sioux Falls Engineering after his military service and spent his working life in that department. In 1948 Bob married Maxine Shoening of Lester, IA and they resided in Sioux Falls until their passing. Maxine passed away in 1993.

Bob was an active member of Good Shepard Lutheran Church, VFW and the American Legion. Bob was also a member of the Crooks Gun Club and enjoyed trap shooting and waterfowl hunting.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Maxine and his parents.

Survivors include one brother: Ronald and his wife Joyce Ann of Sioux City, IA; one nephew Rick of Council Bluffs, IA and one niece Wendy Wyant of Mankato, MN. Bob is also survived by two very dear families: Doug and Dianne Yager of Sioux Falls and Dick and Connie Popejoys of Dimit, SD.

Memorials may be directed to Good Shepard Lutheran Church.
