Esther Lang
Died: Jun 21, 2003

Esther was born March 31, 1903 to George and Carolina Lehr in Tyndall, South Dakota. Her siblings included Arthur, Robert, Hulda (Lubbers), Ruth (Ortland) and Martha (Rummel). She also had one brother, Roland, who died in infancy.
Esther attended grade school and high school in Tyndall. Upon graduation in 1920, she received a scholarship to Dakota Wesleyan College in Mitchell, SD for one year of teacher training (Normal School), after which she taught for one year as the sole teacher in a one-room country school house under the Emery School Board. She then attended Sioux Falls College for one year and received her two-year Normal School Teaching Degree in 1923, after which she was again the only teacher in a country school under the Avon School Board, until 1926.
She met her future husband, George, when his father, Albert was serving as pastor of the Tyndall Baptist Church which she attended. In an old Bible of Esther’s, it is written: Born again 1919; Baptized 1922. George and Esther were married on August 30, 1927 in Tyndall. Together George and Esther pastored churches in Lorraine, Kansas (where their sons, George W. and Harold were born), Tacoma, Washington, and Detroit, Michigan. In 1944 the family moved to Rochester, New York as George became president of the North American Baptist Seminary, moving with the Seminary to Sioux Falls South Dakota in 1949. At that time, George and Esther were also instrumental in the beginning of the Trinity Baptist Church in Sioux Falls.
Esther served faithfully beside her husband in many volunteer capacities during her husband’s ministry and was always an integral part of his work. They were married 54 years before his death in 1980. She passed away June 21, 2003 at Covington Heights in Sioux Falls.
Esther has passed on her love for God and His work, and her love of people, to her two sons, eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Mark S. Hettich
Died: Jun 09, 2003

Mark S. Hettich, 44, of Sioux Falls, died June 9th at his residence. Mark was born February 21, 1959 in Sioux Falls. He grew up in Sioux Falls where he received his education. He was employed with Sioux Steel, and later with Heartland Paper Co.
His longtime companion, Marsha, preceded him in death in 2001.
Grateful for having shared his life are his mother, Marjie Hettich of Sioux Falls, SD; his brothers, Keith Hettich and his wife, Rachel, of Sioux Falls and Neal Hettich of Sacramento, CA; and one sister, JoAnne Hettich of Sioux Falls.
In addition to Marsha, he was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Hettich, and 2 sisters, Peggy and Julie.

Nathan O. Hamro
Died: Jul 11, 2003

Nathan Oliver Hamro, son of Nathan & Ruth (Johnson) Hamro was born in Huron, SD on June 20, 1953. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1971. Following high school he attended Augustana College and the University of South Dakota, graduating in 1975.

On July 6, 1996 he was united in marriage with Darla Peterson in Crooks, SD. Nate was a certified firefighter including wild land fire and was a member of the Renner Fire & Rescue Department. Nate was currently employed at Heiman Fire Equipment selling fire equipment. He had been involved with sales throughout his entire career.

Nate’s family and friends have many fond memories of his passion for life and people. He enjoyed numerous activities such as hunting, fishing, golfing, woodworking, landscaping, computers and photography. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Donald E. Osheim
Died: Jul 12, 2003

Donald E. Osheim, was born on August 20, 1919 in Rosholt, SD to Lawrence C. and Anna (Erdahl) Osheim. He grew up and received his education in Rosholt graduating from Rosholt High School in 1937. Following high school he attended the University of South Dakota graduating in 1948 with a Doctor of Law Degree.
Don served as a pilot in the United States Navy Air Corps during World War II. On November 17, 1942, Donald was united in marriage with Reva Terry in Chicago, IL.
Don practiced law in Watertown from 1952-1986, serving as the Watertown City Attorney for 10 years. From 1964-1972 he served in the South Dakota House of Representatives and was Speaker of the House from 1971-1972.
In 1986, Don and Reva moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas before moving to Sioux Falls in 2000. Don retired from the practice of law in 1987.
Don was a member of the Elks, SD Bar Association, Lions Club, Watertown Chamber of Commerce, AARP, and the Arkansas State Legislative Committee.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Reva Osheim, Sioux Falls, SD; children, Elizabeth Osheim, Los Alamos, NM, David (Lorraine), Brandon, SD, Robert (Tammy) Osheim, Brandon, SD; 5 grandchildren, Kristin, Megan, Laryssa, Nicholas, and Natalie. Wm. Bill Hanlon
Died: Jul 12, 2003

Bill Hanlon, son of William Ross and Julia Elsie (Smith) Hanlon was born December 2, 1918 in Letcher, SD. He grew up and received his education in that area and farmed with his parents.

On January 13, 1941 Bill was united in marriage to Vivian Sheely in Mitchell, SD. The couple lived in Woonsocket and Huron, SD before moving to Sioux Falls in 1944 where Bill was employed by the Air Force Base as a truck driver. After the war, he owned and operated a truck service for many years. Bill semi-retired in 1980 and in 1986, he began driving and delivering vehicles for Sioux Falls Ford.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Vivian; two sons, Bill D. Hanlon, Springfield, MO, Dave M. Hanlon and his wife, Heddy, Springfield, MO; daughter in-law, Carol Hanlon, Ft. Collins, CO; four granddaughters, Dawn (Steve) Ingalls, Hartford, SD, Lynn (Brian) Rieger, Sioux Falls, Gwen (Carl) Conley, Ft. Collins, Sally Jo Miles, Cheyenne, WY; two grandsons, James (Brenda) Hanlon, Tacoma, WA, Wade Hanlon, Ft. Collins; fourteen great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents and a sister preceded him in death.

Emil Kleinsasser
Died: Jul 12, 2003

Emil Kleinsasser age 84, of Sioux Falls died July 12, 2003 at Sioux Valley Hospital.
Emil Kleinsasser, son of Paul and Anna Kleinsasser was born December 12, 1918 in Chasley, ND. Throughout his adult life he worked as a farm hand. In his later years he took care of his sister Dorothy, who preceded him in death in 1999. Emil will be remembered as an honest and caring Christian. Graveside services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday July 23, 2003 at Hills Of Rest Memorial Park. Visitation begins at 1:00 PM Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home 13th and Main Avenue.

Ruth Scherschligt
Died: Jul 10, 2003

Ruth Berdina Hillers was born May 3, 1919 near Chester, SD to William and Emma (Gienapp) Hillers. Ruth grew up on the farm, later moving with her family to Chester where her father was a carpenter. Ruth spent one year in Oneida, IA to help her grandparents. She graduated from Oneida High School in 1935. Upon returning to South Dakota, Ruth and her sister Margaret moved to Sioux Falls for employment. While in Sioux Falls she met Everett “Mike” Scherschligt and they were married July 13, 1938.

After raising their family, Ruth went to work for the Fanny Farmer Candy Shop where she became store manager until retiring in 1977. Ruth and Mike enjoyed their cabin at Lake Big McDonald near Perham, Minnesota until Mike’s death in 1985. Ruth was a skilled needle worker and an avid reader and enjoyed involvement in her church. She also liked to visit with her family, traveling to Spain, Germany, England, and spending winters in North Carolina.

Ruth was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church, Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two sons, Michael (Suzanne) of Robbinsdale, MN and Jonathan of Bailey, CO; daughter, Emly (Robert) Vig of Cary, NC; twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Three sisters, Margaret Paul, Wilma Simmons and Betty Thurston and her church family at Memorial Lutheran Church will miss her companionship and warmth.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Everett, parents, sister Delores Scott and brother Delbert Hillers.

David Krier
Died: Jul 13, 2003

David Michael Krier, son of Clarence and Charlotte “Lottie” (Warner) Krier, was born February 24, 1948 in Hendricks, MN. He grew up there, graduating from high school in 1968.

Shortly after high school he married Marlys Hebert. The couple later moved to California.

After their divorce, David moved back to Hendricks and in 1986 he met his current wife Sherry Randolph. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls. As a couple, they enjoyed sharing the same interest, camping, fishing, playing pool and attending softball games.

David is survived by his wife Sherry; his children, Craig Krier, and LaTrishia McAdams, both of Sacramento, CA; a grandson, Connor McAdams, Sacramento, CA; two brothers, Thomas (Joan) Krier, Hendricks, MN, Merl (Pat) Krier, Sun City, AZ; a sister, Beverly (Elton) Budahl, Hendricks, MN, and a host of other relatives and friends.

His parents and a sister, Yvonne Schneider, preceded him in death.

Roberto Colon
Died: Jul 13, 2003

Roberto Colon, painter, sculptor and Social Worker, died July 13, 2003, at Sioux Valley Hospital. He was 73.

Roberto was born and raised in Puerto Rico. After serving as an infantryman in the US Army during the Korean War, he came to Sioux Falls.

Roberto was united in marriage to Doretta Arends in Luverne, MN on March 19, 1955. He worked as a Child Placement Worker in Watertown, SD and at Minnehaha Child Welfare. He retired with the VA Hospital System as a Psychiatric Social Worker in 1996, after 25 years.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Doretta Colon, Sioux Falls, SD; daughters, Rebecca Silvey and her husband, Scott, Atlanta, GA, Pamela Colon, Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Zoe, Andreea, Raven and Calypso, brother, Miguel Colon and his wife, Cory, Sioux Falls, SD, and brothers and sisters, Luis, Angel, Carlos, Aida, Dorie and Helga, all of Puerto Rico.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:00pm, Thursday, at First Baptist Church. Miller Funeral Home, 13th and Main Avenue, in charge of local arrangements.

Mark Bowman
Died: Jul 14, 2003

Mark was born to Lorna Bowman March 26, 1962 in Sioux City, IA. He graduated from North High School in 1980 and Morningside College in 1984. He taught school in Herreid, SD, from 1984 to 1987. He earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Iowa in 1988. From 1988 to 1998, he was employed at the North Dakota State Library in Bismarck, North Dakota. He then moved to Sioux Falls where he worked at Siouxland Libraries until present.

Mark was united in marriage to Barbra Jill Zenor on June 7, 1991 at St. Boniface Church in Sioux City.

Mark will be remembered for his strong faith life, his amazing sense of humor, his quiet strength, and the deep commitment and love he felt for his family and friends. He will be dearly missed, and yet live on to all those who knew and loved him.

Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Barbra; two daughters, Abigail, 9, and Olivia, 9 months, all at home in Sioux Falls; his brother, Joel Scott Bowman and his wife, Beth, Sioux City, IA; father and mother-in-law, Donald and Ramonde Zenor, Lawton, IA; brothers-in-law, Martin Zenor and his wife, Martha, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Michael Zenor and his wife, Kim, Deerfield, IL; five nieces & nephews; his Sunnycrest family and numerous other relatives and friends. Mark was preceded in death by his grandparents and his mother.

Martha Haraldson
Died: Jul 14, 2003

Martha Madtson was born on January 22, 1925, at Hills, Minnesota, to Guy and Martha Madtson. She graduated from high school at Luverne, MN in 1943.

On September 6, 1944, she married Vernon Haraldson, at Norfolk, VA. In 1966, she began working at Augustana College at the Huddle then moved to the bookstore as a cashier. She retired from Augustana in 1977.

Following Vern’s retirement in 1985, the couple traveled to Canada, Norway, and several areas throughout the United States. In her free time, Martha enjoyed reading novels and books of faith. True to her Norwegian spirit, she loved to entertain guests and was a wonderful cook.

Martha was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday and Bible school, attended church circle, served on the Sunshine committee of the Senior Ministries board, and participated in many other activities. She delivered Meals on Wheels 26 years and volunteered at Sioux Valley Hospital, where she was a member of the auxiliary. Her gracious and kind-hearted spirit will be long cherished.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, Ron Haraldson and his wife, Marci, Willmar, MN, Dennis Haraldson and his wife, Carol, Sioux Falls, SD, Paul Haraldson and his wife, Marisa, Ely, MN; daughter, Sheila Castagnozzi and her husband, Terry, Martinez, CA; six grandchildren, Heidi Nelson, Gretchen Haraldson, Caryn Haraldson,
Hailey Castagnozzi, Staci Shiller and Steve Shiller; brothers, Arnie Madtson, Volga, SD, Don Madtson and his wife, Bert, Redwing, MN; and her sister, Anne Langum and her husband, Charles, Sinai, SD. In addition to her husband who passed away on June 11, 2003, two sisters and seven brothers preceded her in death.

Ruby Stewart
Died: Jul 14, 2003

Ruby Stewart, 87, of 1418 Evergreen Drive, Luverne, Minnesota, died in Avera McKennan Hospital, July 14, 2003. She was born in Topaz, Missouri on January 29, 1916 to Oscar and Delphia (Hale) Robertson. She attended High School in Willow Springs, Missouri, and in 1933 came to Sioux Falls to attend Nettleton Business School. Upon completion of her course, she was a bookkeeper at Fenn Brothers until her marriage.
On November 13, 1936, she married Fred W. Stewart, a long and happy marriage for 64 1/2 years until his death in 2001. When her three children had grown, she went back to work as a bookkeeper at Mom and Dad's Nursing Home for 27 years as a bookkeeper and retired in 1992. In 1978 when her husband retired, they moved to their lake home at Lake Madison until 1992. Then spent seven years in Pipestone and upon his death in Luverne with her daughters and son-in-law, still enjoying many a happy weekend with her son and his wife at the lake. Through the years she enjoyed golf, bowling and cards with the ladies at the Minnehaha Country Club.
She is survived by Kay (Richard) Sundstrom of Luverne, MN; Sam (Pam) Stewart of Lake Madison, SD; one sister, Opal Lyle of Fort Smith, Arkansas; and one brother, Dene Robertson of West Plains, Missouri.
She was predeceased by her parents, three sisters, husband and daughter.

Walter Hieb
Died: Jul 16, 2003

Walter Hieb was born in McPherson County, SD, on August 26, 1920.

He was united in marriage to Ella Huber at Hosmer, SD on November 19, 1944. The family lived in New Castle, Wyoming and in 1959, moved to Rapid City, SD. Walter worked in auto body repair and upholstery. Walter retired from McKee Ford in 1985, after 15 years. The following year, they moved to Sioux Falls. Ella preceded him in death on August 21, 1996.

Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Dennis Hieb, Ferndale, WA; daughters, Arlyce Gamber and her husband, Royal, Sioux Falls, SD, Marla Hoffman, Euless, TX; three grandchildren; brothers, Harold Hieb, Aberdeen, SD, Otto Hieb and his wife, Virginia, Bath, SD, Harry Hieb and his wife, Carolyn, Caputa, SD; sisters, Althea Weishaar, Minneapolis, MN, Alma Bratton, Ojai, CA, Leontina Morlock, Westport, SD, Erna Huber, Idaho Falls, ID, and Helen Satmary, Brea, CA. A son, Weston, three brothers and one sister, preceded him in death.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00pm, Tuesday, at Miller Funeral Home, 13th and Main Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation for Walter begins at noon, Monday, with the family present to greet friends from 7:00 to 8:00 Monday evening. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Morningside Care Center, 101 Church Street, Alcester, SD, 57001.

Rosalie Archer
Died: Jul 15, 2003

Rosalie Christine Teigen, daughter of Leo and Gertrude (Neville) Teigen, was born on December 12, 1927 in Camp Crook, SD. She grew up there and received her education at Lead High School, graduating in 1946.

Rosalie was united in marriage with Floyd E. Archer on April 5, 1947 in Deadwood, SD. It was there that they started their family and later moved to Newcastle, WY, in 1948. Floyd passed away on February 4, 1980. After his passing, Rosalie began working at Dakotabilities. She was an extremely good hearted and generous person as was shown by her focus and attention to those at Dakotabilities.

Rosalie was involved with the Animal Welfare League and cherished her own two cats. She enjoyed attending the symphony, socializing with friends and visiting her grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared her life are; four sons, Dennis Archer, Sioux Falls, SD, Lawrence Archer and his wife, Cheryl, Gillette, WY, Stephen Archer and his wife, LaNice, Rapid City, SD, Mark Archer and his wife LuAnn, Denver, CO; four daughters, Elaine Seegmiller and her husband, Brian, Denver, CO, Diane Franzen and her husband, Lewis, Denver, CO, Wendy Vrooman and her husband, Tom, Denver, CO, Peggy Archer, Denver, CO; a sister, Jean Rundle and her husband, Bob, Spearfish, SD; 12 Grandchildren; three great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; her parents; a brother, Bill Teigen; and a sister, Mary Telford.

Margaret L. Domke
Died: Jul 19, 2003

Sioux Falls, Margaret L. Domke, 94 died on Saturday, July 19, 2003 at Covington Heights. She was born on February 12, 1909, to Hannah (Westall) and Arnold Bolsover on a farm in Murray County, Minnesota. She grew up in Slayton, MN, where she graduated from Slayton High School. In 1928, she moved to Sioux Falls, SD, to attend the financial business program at Nettleton Commercial College. She worked at Sioux Valley Hospital and Northern States Power Company where she met and married Harry B. Domke on December 12, 1937.
Margaret has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1931, and worked as their financial secretary for 12 years. She was a troop leader for both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts and was a member of the Minn-Ia-Kota council for 40 years.
After their retirement in 1969, Margaret and her husband spent their winters in McAllen, TX, where she moved permanently in 1993. In 1997, Margaret moved back to Sioux Falls, where she lived at Dow Rummel Village.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and her husband, who died in 1980. She is survived by two children, Gerald A. Domke, Chicago, IL, and Joyce C. Johnson of Littleton, CO; two grandson, Brad Johnson; granddaughter, Stephanie (Steve) Oberg; three great grandchildren, Nicholas Johnson, Jack Oberg, and Emiliah Oberg; niece, Mariam Faundeen and nephews, Dick Farrell, Ray Farrell, and Duane Farrell.

James Bredeson
Died: Jul 19, 2003

James Baldwin Bredeson, son of Andrew and Mable J. (Lommen) Bredeson, was born on February 27, 1908 in Lake County, SD. He grew up there and received his education from Lake County Rural School. He then worked on the family farm until moving to Sioux Falls in 1938. It was there that he began learning the construction trade. He began working at Henry Carlson Construction and then built his first home.

James was united in marriage with Gladys Schurman on November 3, 1940 in Pipestone, MN. He continued working until her death on November 10, 1959. It was after her death that he began building his business of Bredeson Construction.

James was united in marriage with Gladys L. Bunsness-Dahl on July 12, 1964 in Sioux Falls, SD. Together the couple built and operated the business for over forty years until he retired at the age of 80.

James loved building everything from crafts and buildings, to two of his own houses. He was especially proud of the cross and advent wreath he made for First Lutheran Church.

James was an active member of First Lutheran Church in the choir, the Men In Mission, and other various groups. He was a past president of the Sioux Land Lions Club, president of the Home Builders association in 1975, and president of the Remodeling Home Builders association from 1984 to 1985.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Gladys L. Bredeson, Sioux Falls, SD; a daughter, Karen Lidel and her husband, Alan, Sioux Falls, SD; two step sons, John Dahl and his wife, Barbara, Mahtomedi, MN, David Dahl and his wife, Phyllis, Edina, MN; two step daughters, Judy Rhodenbaugh and her husband, William, Stillwater, MN, Joyce Hubner and her husband, Jay, Yankton, SD; a sister, Mildred Moerke, Fullerton, CA; 12 grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; his parents; a son, James; 2 sisters, Hazel and Nellie; and 3 brothers, Arlen, Chester, and Victor.
