Austin Chi Hsin Fan

Rapid City Dateline Austin Chi Hsin Fan memorial notice with photo. Austin C. Fan, 63, of Rapid City, died at his home after a long battle with lung and brain cancer, Sunday, July 5, 2009. Austin was born September 15, 1945 in Sichaun, China to You Gau Fan and Hsueh Chen Wang. As a child, he and his family moved to Taiwan with the Nationalist Party where he later graduated from the Taiwanese Air Force Academy. Austin retired as a Major in the Taiwanese Air Force where he served as a fighter pilot. Upon his retirement, he moved to Singapore and became a flight instructor for the Singaporean military for two years. He married Cynthia Noon Hwa Lee in Taipei, Taiwan on September 22, 1973. In 1981, Austin moved his family to Rapid City and opened the Great Wall Restaurant, and later, the Imperial Restaurant. He was baptized as a Christian in 2005. His is survived by his wife, Cynthia Fan, Rapid City, a son Steven H. Fan, Chongqing, China, a daughter, Jennifer H. Fan, San Francisco, a grandson, Austin R. Fan, Chongqing, China, a sister Chi Ren, Los Angeles, and a brother, Chi Chen, Taipei, Taiwan. Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Services at Serenity Springs with a visitation one hour prior to services. Austin will be cremated following the services and his ashes will be buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California the following week.

Eileen Marie Getty

Eileen M. Getty, 87, passed away Friday, May 22, 2009 at the Golden Living-Black Hills. Eileen Marie Getty was born June 11, 1921 to Herman and Marie (Hernon) Fink in Chicago, IL. Her parents were first generation Americans with German and Irish roots. She grew up during the Depression in her Irish Grandparents home, while her father was away in the Civilian Conservation Corps. She graduated from Aquinas Dominican High School in 1937, two years ahead of her peers. She attended Mundelline College in Chicago on a full scholarship for two years. After taking a 9 month business course, she worked as a secretary for a firm of lawyers for five years. In 1942 while visiting Texas with a friend, she met a handsome GI on his way to war. When she returned home she found out that a friend had given him her address. Being a Patriotic American girl, she wrote to him throughout the war, eventually every day. On his return in 1945 their relationship led to a proposal on a trip to Spearfish Canyon. She married Guy Getty on April 26, 1947 in Chicago and made their home in Rapid City for the next 62 years. Eileen was a homemaker who raised 5 children. She truly cared for everyone and found good in every person and situation. She touched the heart of everyone who met her. She will be sorely missed. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Guy Getty of Rapid City. Three daughters, Sue Green (Earl), Patty Wright both of Rapid City, Kathy Easom of Watsonville, CA. Two sons: Michael Getty of Minot, ND, and David Getty of Tempe, AZ. Seventeen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. A visitation will be from 5 – 8 pm, Tuesday, May 26 at Serenity Springs Funeral Chapel. A rosary/prayer vigil will begin at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am, Wednesday, May 27 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Rapid City with the Rev. William Zandri as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery at Sturgis. A luncheon will follow the interment at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church parish hall. Arrangements have been placed in the care of Serenity Springs Funeral Chapel.

Daniel W. Smith

Daniel Smith, 33, died Friday, July 17, 2009 from injuries as a result of a motorcycle – vehicle accident. Daniel was born August 5, 1975 to Rodger and Rita (Long) Smith, in Monroe, LA and raised in Winnsboro, Franklin Parish, LA. Daniel joined the United States Air Force on October 15, 1993 and served at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD, Misawa Air Force Base in Japan and at Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, NM. He was discharged in 2005. He married Jennifer Erz, June 3, 1996 in Rapid City. Daniel lived life to the fullest and did everything he set his mind to. He loved hunting, fishing and working with his hands. Survivors include his wife, Jennifer Smith, Rapid City, son, Kain Smith, Rapid City, parents, Rodger and Rita Smith, Gilbert, LA, and parents in law, Dennis and Margaret Erz, Rapid City, two brothers, Kevin Smith, Gilbert, LA and Wade Smith, Monroe, LA and a sister, Sara Smith, Monroe, LA A visitation for he and his son, Hunter, will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Edstrom and Rooks Funeral Services at Serenity Springs Chapel, Tuesday, July 21, 2009. A Christian Wake service will be held at 7:00 pm with Fr. Dan Juelfs officiating. Funeral services for he and Hunter will be held 10:00 am, Wednesday, July 22 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Fr. Dan Juelfs officiating. He and his son will be interred together in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by Ellsworth Air Force Base Honors Team and TREA.. There will be a motorcycle escort from the church to Black Hills National Cemetery following services as a show for motorcycle awareness. Anyone who is interested is invited by the family to take part. A memorial has been established by the family and donations may be sent to the Daniel & Hunter Smith Memorial in care of Pioneer Bank and Trust of Rapid City.

Hunter D. Smith

Hunter Smith, 8, Rapid City, died at Rapid City Regional Hospital, July 18, 2009, from injuries suffered as a result of a motorcycle – vehicle accident which occurred on Friday, July 17, 2009. Hunter was born September 7, 2000 to Daniel and Jennifer (Erz) Smith, in Misawa, Japan. Hunter was active in Harney Little League and received his Orange Belt in Tae Kwon Do from the United Chung Do Kwan Association in November of 2008. He attended Wilson Elementary School in Rapid City. Hunter was an organ donor, his mother choosing to help others as a result of this tragedy. Survivors include his mother, Jennifer Smith, Rapid City, a brother, Kain Smith, Rapid City, maternal grandparents, Dennis and Margaret Erz, Rapid City and paternal grandparents, Rodger and Rita Smith, Gilbert, LA. Visitation for he and his father will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Edstrom and Rooks Funeral Services at Serenity Springs Chapel, Tuesday, July 21, 2009. Doris A. Marzolf

Doris A. Marzolf, 73, of Summerset, died Sunday, at Fountain Springs Health Care Center in Rapid City.

Survivors include 2 sons: David Marzolf of Nebraska and Allen Marzolf of Newell, and 6 daughters: Gloria Clausen of Harold, SD, Shirley Harvey of Lead, Debbie Palmer of Lead, Peggy Sue Lindgren of Spearfish, Cynthia Findley of Lead and Tina Marzolf of Summerset., and two brothers, John Statema of North Dakota and Bert Statema of Minnesota.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, May 7, at 10:00am at the Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis.

Nels L. Dyrdahl

Nels L. Dyrdahl, 76, of Rapid City, died Thursday, January 28, 2010 peacefully at home.

He was born February 27, 1933 in Oldham to Albert and Nellie (Fuglsby) Dyrdahl, on the family homestead.

He attended Hill Grade School and graduated from Oldham High School in 1951.

He attendeed Augustana College before entering the United States Air Force in 1953.

Nels served from 1953 until 1956 at Parks AFB, California, Keesler AFB, Missouri, Chanute, AFB, IL., Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah and Big Delta AFB, AK.

On August 6, 1966, he married Joan A. Neuharth in Wessington Springs.

They lived in Aberdeen from 1966 until 1983 when they moved to Rapid City.

They have one daughter, Pamela. He gained training while in the US Air Force in weather observation.

In 1957 he became a meteorological technician with the National Weather Service; working in Huron, Aberdeen and Rapid City.

Nels retired in 1989. Nels was a member of Kiwanis International in Aberdeen and the Westside Kiwanis Club in Rapid City.

Nels had 33 years of perfect attendance. He enjoyed beekeeping and had about 500 hives in western South Dakota.

He was also a member of the United Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Joan, Rapid City, his daughter; Pam VanCuren, and her husband Jeff, Stafford, VA., grandson, Alex, Stafford, VA., his brother; Arnold Dyrdahl, Madison, SD, his sister; Marie Debenport, Irmo, SC., two brothers in law, three sisters in law and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Irene Fulton and her husband Ernie, a brother in law, Gene Debenport and father and mother in law; Helmuth and Dorothy Neuharth.

The family requests memorials for the Mary Hall Park, sponsored by the Rapid City Kiwanis Clubs.

Memorials may be sent to the family.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Services at Serenity Springs in Rapid City.

Interment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military Honors.

Larry R. Allman

Larry R. Allman, 51, of Rapid City, died Sunday, January 31, 2010 after a two year battle with lung cancer at the Rapid City Regional Auxiliary Hospice House.

Larry was born March 15, 1958 in Rapid City to Francis and Sarah (Conroy) Allman.

He grew up in Longmont, CO.

Larry lived in Longmont, CO and Albuquerque, NM, moving back to Rapid City in 2008.

He loved to fish, play pool and horseshoes. Survivors include his daughter, Michelle Lucero, Albuquerque, NM, his mother, Sarah Allman, Rapid City, three brothers; Robert Allman, and his wife, Viola, Los Lunas, NM, Delbert Allman, Rapid City and Frank Allman, Rapid City, a sister; Shirley Garcia, Albuquerque, NM and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his father, two brothers and one sister.

A Memorial Service will be held 4:00pm, Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Services at Serenity Springs in Rapid City.

Sherman J. Bear Ribs, Sr

Sherman J. Bear Ribs, Sr., 77, Rapid City, died Monday, February 1, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include three sons; Sherman Bear Ribs, Jr, Wamblee, Duane Bear Ribs, Rapid City and John Bear Ribs, Pennsylvania, two daughters; Beverly Lam, Moorhead, MN and Dawn Bear Ribs, Fargo, ND, 12 Grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday, February 5, 2010 at St Isaac Jogues Catholic Church with Fr. David Matzko, S.J. presiding.

Interment will be in Mt Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Services at Serenity Springs.

Carlotta “Carla” “Odie” A. Odenbach

Carlotta Ann “Carla” “Odie” Odenbach, 55, of Rapid City, passed way Monday, February 1, 2010 at the Rapid City Regional Auxiliary Hospice House after losing her battle with cancer. We were privileged to have been graced with her presence for 55 years.

Carla was born February 4, 1954 to Werner and Yvonne (Lipp) Odenbach in Bismarck, ND.rnrnThroughout her life, Carla touched many lives. She was cherished by her family, dedicated to her friends and loved by all. Most importantly, she was a loving and devoted mother to her son, Keenan.

Survivors include her son, Keenan Caesar, Rapid City, two sisters; Cindy Dohn and her husband, Terry and Roxy Schumacher, and her husband, Stan, and a brother; Todd Odenbach, and his wife Joni all of Aberdeen.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Services at Serenity Springs Tranquility Chapel of Rapid City.

A trust fund has been established for her son, Keenan and may be directed to Cindy Dohn, 2503 W. Melgaard Rd., Aberdeen, SD, 57401.

Lyle Kenneth Mudge

Lyle Kenneth Mudge, 72, of Rapid City, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Lyle was born April 15, 1937 in Selby, SD to Kenneth and Bertha (Tucker) Mudge and was the youngest of six children. Lyle graduated from Selby High School in 1955. While there he excelled in academics and was a talented athlete. Lyle married Lois Walter on December 22, 1957 at Doland, SD. To this union two sons were born. They were the joy of his life. He always encouraged them to do their best. They always made him feel proud. Through his sons many long lasting friends were made. He attended South Dakota School of mines and graduated in 1959. Upon graduation he went to work for General Electric in Richland, WA. In 1964 he and his family moved to Seattle where he attended the University of Washington and earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. He returned to Richland, WA. and was a research engineer for Battelle NW. While at Battelle he was honored as Engineer of the year and also received Research and Development Award and was honored in Chicago at the Museum of Science and Industry. Lyle also holds numerous patents. In 1988 Lyle took disability from work, Multiple Sclerosis making it difficult for him to continue. In 2002 Lyle and his wife moved to South Dakota to be closer to family. He enjoyed having his sister Mary and niece Darcie Decker spend time with him. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 52 years, Lois, his son Ret. LT. COL. Thomas Mudge and his wife Andrea and their four children; Drew, David, Victoria and Samuel of Panama City, FL. He also leaves five sisters; Evelyn Merkel of Oak Harbor, WA., Mary Hardy and her husband, David of Rapid City, Florence Guetz and her husband Don of Littleton, CO, Donys Nelson and her husband Roy, and Doris Pater and her husband Larry all of Deerwood, MN and many nieces and nephews. Lyle was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth, his parents and his brother in law, Rueben Merkel. He often referred to the day of his son’s death as the saddest day of his life. Ken spent a lot of time with his Dad and helped him with his disability. He would often stop by on his way to work or on his way home. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 pm, Saturday at Edstrom and Rooks Funeral Services at Serenity Springs Chapel of Tranquility with Pastor Brent Reeves and Pastor Paul Lloyd officiating. A visitation will be offered for Lyle and Lois’ friends, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm, Monday February 8 at Einan Funeral Home in Richland. Interment will be 10:00 am Tuesday, February 9 at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland, WA. with Pastor Jim Amend officiating. A memorial has been established by the family.
