Philip D. Dowlin

Philip Dean Dowlin, 76, of Rapid City, died Thursday, May 10, 2012, at his home Phil was born April 7, 1936, in Laird, Colorado to Ross and Fern (Peterson) Dowlin. Phil passed away on the 102nd anniversary of his mother’s birthday. Phil accomplished much in his life but never lost his child-like sense of adventure, an attribute which endeared him to children and animals, especially a certain black cat. His pioneering spirit began as a toddler when he was found on the roof of the family home before he could barely walk. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960, where he traveled the globe competing for the US Army Rifle Team, his highest award being his US International Distinguished Shooter Badge. As a highway engineer, he helped blaze trails by surveying mountainous roads in Colorado, Wyoming, Texas and the Black Hills and eventually created the first computer system to design interstate highways. From there he was recruited into the burgeoning computer industry where he became an innovator of revolutionary computer systems for the energy industry and eventually started his own technology company. Phil met his wife, Jan, in 1967 when he hired her to work for him in Denver, CO. and he often said that he has been working for her ever since. They enjoyed 44 years together, including 25 years in Houston, Texas. They had two children, Deanna and Michael, and Phil loved being a father, coaching their basketball teams and beaming with pride at their accomplishments. Phil retired to Rapid City with his wife, Jan, in 1999 to spend time with “the girls,” otherwise known as his mother-in-law Dorothy Morris and her two sisters, Mae Meiners and Marjorie Doody. In retirement, he loved reading, golfing, skiing, playing cards, fishing and playing video games, and he especially loved traveling to exotic locations with his wife and family. True to form, Phil was always thinking of ways to benefit others; he was one of the founders of the Center for Business and Economics of the Northern Plains, South Dakota’s first think-tank. Phil will be remembered for his smile that could light up any room, the mischievous sparkle in his eyes, his generous spirit, his infectious laugh and his terrible, terrible puns. Jacob Daniel Wagner

Jacob Daniel Wagner left this world to join our heavenly father on June 22, 2013, at the young age of 22. He was born on September 13, 1990, in Rapid City, SD. Throughout his life, Jake was a thrill seeker. Jacob was a modern day James Dean. He could be found on the mountain with his snowboard, searching for fresh powder, and wicked moguls – or scaling cliffs like he was Spiderman and gravity was nothing. He also loved his wakeboard, and could twist and flip with the best of them. As a friend, he was loyal to the end. He would tell it like it is and make no apologies. He could make a person laugh at anything, even in their darkest hour. He was ALWAYS the life of the party. As a man, he was just reaching his maturity. He loved spending the evenings alongside his dad, Jerryjay, cooking dinners for his mom Jeanne and sister Kylea. One of his best dishes (that even HE would eat as leftovers) was his spaghetti with a dash of cinnamon. He had grown into a man his father was proud of. He had mastered the smaller equipment at J&J Asphalt, and was moving onto the road grader – well on his path to being able to one day take over the business. He had also just qualified to buy his first home, making his mom so very proud as she could see the life lessons that she had taught him coming to fruition. His sister, Kylea was his all-time best friend. She had become his hero, and he would battle anyone to protect her. It was a friendship between siblings to admire. Jacob is now walking in heaven with his Aunt Shelly, his Grampa Larry, and his Great-Grandparents, Frank and Peggy. He leaves behind a huge family, his Mom, Dad and sister Kylea, Papa and Granny, and his Granny Dee, his little brother Wyatt, the Wagners, Thomas, Fenners, and Perretts families, and his many, many cousins . He had many, many friends who are considered his family, especially Johnny and Tyler Grimm. A memorial has been established to Ski for Light and the Black Hills Hiking Club. A visitation will be offered for his family and friends from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Serenity Springs Funeral Chapel of Rapid City. A Celebration of Jacob’s life will be held at 3:00pm, Thursday, June 27, 2013 next to the Canyon Lake Chophouse with Fr. Michel Mulloy officiating. Additional parking will be available across Jackson Blvd at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Following cremation, inurnment of his ashes will take place at a future date.
