Jonathan Crutcher

On January 17, 2009, our precious little man, Jonathan Samuel Crutcher, went to be with our Lord and Savior. He departed this world as the result of a single vehicle accident in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Jonathan was born on April 03, 1990 in Butte, Montana. He was a precious gift to his parents Michael and Sharyl Crutcher from the start. His contagious smile and sweet handsome face was all it took to fall in love with him. Jonathan graduated from New Underwood High School in May 2008. He attended the Douglas School District from 4th grade to 10th grade. He attended schools in Watford City, North Dakota from grades K through 3rd. Jonathan’s biggest passion in life from the age of 5 was to be active in Tae Kwon Do. When he and his parents relocated to Rapid City in 1999 he was able to fulfill that passion through the Bright Path Tae Kwon Do club under the leadership of Bob and Deb Richmond and Maurice Skates. He was a natural. He obtained his third degree black belt in 2006. He became a student instructor who had a special talent with the kids. All he could talk about after each class was those children. Jonathan’s other hobbies included writing poems; drawing; playing the trumpet and piano; playing video games; and just hanging out with his friends. Jonathan was a member of the First Congregational Church, Rapid City, SD. On February 04, 2008 Jonathan and Kalsey presented a precious gift to his family – his daughter Clara. Jonathan’s face would just light up when someone mentioned his daughter or when he was around her. She was and is a special part of his life. Surviving family members and friends include: his parents Michael and Sharyl Crutcher, New Underwood, SD; his grandparents Jack and Shirley Crutcher, Monticello, Indiana; his aunts and uncles: Michael McAllister of Box Elder, SD; Charlotte (Crutcher) Young, Jacquie (Crutcher) and Donald Wright all of Monticello, Indiana ; his cousins: Misty Bertram, Rhett Bertram, and Camryn Mermer all of Monticello, Indiana; his great grandmother Oleva Mae Crutcher, Trenton, Missouri; his great aunts and uncles : Nadine Terry, Gladstone, Missouri; Loretta and Richard Wawrzyniak, Nicholasville, Kentucky; his daughter Clara Jean Kay Brinkman, Rapid City, SD; his special love Kalsey Brinkman, Rapid City, SD; his extended family: Betty Fritz, Kandra and her family, Karen and her family, and Kandis, David and Hope all of Rapid City, SD; his dear friends Joseph, Daniel, Tommie, and Greg Tank, Keene, North Dakota; and his best buddies Health Zakrzewski, New Underwood, SD and Matt Tschetter, Box Elder, SD.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 7:00 PM at the First Congregational Church – United Church of Christ, 1200 Clark Street, Rapid City, SD with the Pastors Ted and Susan Huffman officiating.

Martha Jane Shields Wallace

Martha Jane Shields Wallace, 88, of Rapid City, South Dakota, traded in her earthly life for her eternal life in Christ on January 15, 2009 at Fountain Springs Health Care in Rapid City, South Dakota. Well done thou good and faithful servant. Martha was born October 20, 1920 in Blandinsville, IL to the late Fred and Cordia (nee Coulter) Shields. Martha attended school in the Carthage and Burnside areas and attended Macomb High School, graduating in 1937. She then attended nursing school at St. Francis in Peoria, IL. Martha is survived by one sister, Roberta Shields DeCocq of Ozark, MO; by her eight children and spouses, Jane Gearhart of Waterloo, IA, Pat (Ron) Hansen of Polar, WI, Richard (Charlotte) Wallace Jr. of Zion, Fred (Judy) Wallace of Holland, MA, Rachel (Jim) Marshall of Lexington, KY, Leah (Jim) Jester of Rapid City, SD, Debrah (David) Christensen of Racine, WI, and Galen Wallace of Beach Park; 20 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, with Pastor Marv Kindle officiating. Interment was at Pineview Memorial Park, Beach Park, IL.

A Memorial service will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at Bethel Assembly of God, 1201 North Maple Avenue, Rapid City.

Mildred Wynne

Mildred Wynne, 85, Rapid City, died Friday, January 23, 2009 at Fountain Springs Health Care. She was born November 20, 1923 in Council Bluffs, IA and moved to Rapid City at age 5. She attended Rapid City schools but took her junior year off to care for her ailing mother and help raise her younger sister and brothers. She graduated from Rapid City High School in 1942. Mildred worked for North Western Bell Telephone Company for 10 years as an operator. She married Henry Wynne in 1950 and joined him for 15 years while he was in the US Air Force. They retired to Rapid City in 1965. She worked for Black Hills Workshop from 1969-1973 where she taught “Life Skills”. She also worked as a cashier at Hardware Hank. She enjoyed flowers, playing the piano and helping to raise her only grandson, Anthony. She was a member of the Salvation Army where she did a great deal of volunteer work and also attended as a church member. She is survived by 1 daughter, Laura and husband Jim Smith, Rapid City; 1 son, G. Randall Thomas, Kingston, PA; grandson, Anthony Smith, Mankato, MN; a sister Lois, Rapid City; 3 brothers, Kenneth and Russell, FL and Dale, Rapid City. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry and 3 brothers. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home with Major Robert McClintock of the Salvation Army officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the services. Thank you to the staff of Fountain Springs Health Care for caring for Mildred in her last year of life and also to Drs. Bauman and Purdy and the nursing staff who were there for Mildred.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home with Major Robert McClintock of the Salvation Army officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the services.

Pamela Lee Brodine

Pamela Lee Brodine (a.k.a. The Queen Mother)of Keystone died Thursday January 29th as a result of a tragic vehicle accident.

She was the daughter of Albert V. Brodine, Jr. and Merlie Rose Brodine.

She was born in Pasadena Calif.

Pam was a successful entrepreneur, involved in many different business's over the years.

The Emporium in Keystone has been her passion, for the last 28 years.

The latest joy of her life was the Holy Terror Antiques.

She wanted to start sharing her lifetime of collecting with others.

As she started dispersing her collections her favorite saying was "you can't pull a u-haul with a hearse".

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She survived by her sister, Andrea and husband Jim Boccignone.

Niece Lisa Boccignone, and her daughter Bella Donna.

Nephew Tony and wife Shannan Boccignone and their son Logan, all of Southern California.

Her stepson Scott Sitts and family of Rapid City.

She leaves behind her special friends, to mention a few, Kay Siemonsma, Dennis Kling, Westly Parker, Shanna Harris and her e-Bay buddy Fred Francis.

Her family of all her past and present employees who she valued dearly.

We would be remiss if we didn't mention her beloved pets, Her Bulldogs Miss Molly, Fifi Trixiebelle, Sweety Pie, Sluggo and cat Oreo.

Pam was known for her generosity and community support.

A celebration of her Life will be held at The Keystone Community Center at 1:00 pm Monday Feb. 2nd with lunch following.

Marlis Buxcel

Marlis died Saturday January 31, 2009 in the warm presence of her children after a long battle with cancer.

She was born March 21, 1936 in Highmore, SD to Richard and Murril VanOverschelde.

She graduated from Chamberlain SD High School in 1954 and attended Dakota Wesleyan University where she met and married Leland Wass in June 1956.

Marlis and Leland had six children together and settled their family in Hot Springs, SD.

Marlis worked for 30 years as a CNA nurse at Southern Hills General Hospital and State Veterans Home.

She enjoyed attending her children’s sporting events, where she could be found pacing in the hallway with a glimpse of the scoreboard in sight at all times.

She also enjoyed bowling, gardening, puzzles, needlepoint, and other outdoor activities.

After Leland passed away she was remarried in 1982 to Sam Buxcel and became loving mother to 2 additional children. Marlis and Sam remained in Hot Springs until she was diagnosed with cancer in May 2005.

Marlis and Sam moved to Gillette WY in 2005 to be near her children, grandchildren, and begin her battle with cancer.

During her bout with cancer Marlis continued to attend her grand-children’s sporting events, graduations, do needlepoint, and anything else that would keep her busy.

Marlis is survived by her husband Sam Buxcel of Gillette WY, her children Rick Wass Douglas WY, Janet Sechser of Belle Fourche SD, Teresa Michael, Jeff Wass, and Anne Ochsner all of Gillette WY, step-children Patti Hereford of Fayetteville, Tenn., and Robin Buxcel of Minot, ND, numerous grand-children, and great grand-children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Leland Wass, and her son Michael Wass.

A memorial service for Marlis Buxcel, 72 of Gillette WY and formerly of Hot Springs, SD will be held at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Hot Springs, SD on Thursday February 5, 2009. At 10:00 AM.

Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at McColley's Chapels of the Hills, Hot Springs.

Walter Benjamin Edmonds

Walter Benjamin Edmonds, 61, life resident of Rapid City died Friday February 6, 2009 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He is survived by 3 brothers, Tom Edmonds, Littleton, CO; Estkral, and Pat both of Rapid City and his sister, Mary Zebick, Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bill.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday Feb. 11th at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating.

Interment will follow at Pine Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m., Tuesday Feb. 10th at the funeral home.

William C. Getz

Memorial services for William C. Getz, 63, Rapid City, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 16, 2009 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Herb Cleveland officiating.

He died Monday, February 9, 2009 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He is survived by a brother, Paul Getz, Rapid City.

Memorial services for William C. Getz, 63, Rapid City, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 16, 2009 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Herb Cleveland officiating.

Kevin Floyd Henne

Kevin Floyd Henne, 56, Rapid City died Feb 13, 2009 at his residence.

Kevin entered the US Army Sept. 20, 1971 and was honorably discharged March 25, 1975. He is survived by his children, Josh Henne, Oshkosh, NE; Jennifer Henne, Ft. Collins, CO; Jesse Henne, Lead; his parents, Cal and Hazel Henne, Chadron, NE; his brothers, Bill Henne; Ken Henne, Bill Steinhower and his sisters Colleen Williams; Jody Robinson; Kathy Kersey and Joleen Slee.

Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m., Friday Feb. 20, 2009 at Black Hills National Cemetery with Chaplain Bill Zandri officiating.

Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Honor Guard.

Edna Roth

Edna Roth, 81, Rapid City, passed away Friday April 9, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospice House following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born October 27, 1928 to Samuel and Magdelena (Rosin) Besler in Bison, South Dakota.

She along with her nine brothers (David, Marvin, Gottlieb, Ervin, Samuel, Arthur, Herbert, Ernest, and Richard) and four sisters (Eva, Hilda, Mary and Martha) spent their childhood on the family farm.

She married Roy Arnold Darling in 1951 and continued farm life while raising their three sons in Bison.

She left farm life to work as a nurse’s aide in Lemmon, Bowman and later in Custer, S.D.

She eventually met and married rancher Elmer Roth in June of 1983 where they resided in Aladdin, Wyoming until Elmer’s untimely death from cancer.

She enjoyed her later years traveling with her husband Clarence Vilhauer, whom she married in November 1999.

Grateful for having shared her life are her three sons, Ernest (Reyna) Darling of Greeley, Colorado, Earl (Nicki) Darling of Johnstown, Colorado and Frank (Penny) Darling of Rapid City, South Dakota, stepsons Doug (Kathy) Vilhauer and David (Lauretta) Vilhauer of Aberdeen, South Dakota and her grandchildren Joni, Angela, Adam , Shannon, Cody, Trista, Zachary and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary, her first husband Roy Darling, her second husband Elmer Roth and her third husband Clarence Vilhauer (March 2010).

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 17th at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home Pastor Bruce Baum officiating.

Viewing will be from 4:00 to 7:00 on Friday, April 16.

Elva Pearl Patterson

Elva Pearl Patterson, 93, Rapid City, died Monday April 5, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

She was born Jan 3, 1917 to Clarence and Gertrude (Freeman) Sutton in Carthage, SD.

On Sept 5, 1936 Elva married John Patterson.

They moved to DeSmet in 1947 and then to Rapid City in 1960.

Elva was employed at Black Hills Federal Credit Union for 20 years and remained active at the Credit Union on various committees and the board of directors for another 13 years after her retirement.

Elva was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Over the years she was a board member of AARP, was active in the Women of the Moose, and served on the board at Canyon Lake Senior Citizens Center where she was a member for 32 years.

Elva loved to have a good time and never missed a chance to go do things with her children, grandchildren or friends.

She was always ready to go, even for a midnight ride on the motorcycles, ice fishing in the cold, camping in the summer or just a ride throughout the hills.

She loved the many family get-togethers. She never missed a chance to take a trip whether in the RV, over the open road, tours, or on the ‘Run for the Wall’, a POW-MIA motorcycle awareness ride from California to Washington DC.

She was a happy, loving, caring, compassionate, fun loving person that many people affectionately knew as ‘Grandma’.

She always found the good in people and never had a bad word about anyone.

Elva is survived by her daughter, Marlys (Chuck) Shull; stepson Lewis (Norma) Patterson; grandchildren, Shirley (Rick) Whiting; Scott Bauman; Sharon Wagner; Sheryl Bauman; Jerry Puckett, Jr; David (Dawn) Puckett; Karen (Chris) Millim; Curt (Judy) Patterson; Jennifer (Daniel) Seurer; Tom (Joan) Patterson; Lewis (Deb) Patterson; many great and great-great-grandchildren that were all very special to her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Patterson; one daughter, Nadine Patterson and a granddaughter, Sharlene J. Bauman.

Celebration of Life will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Faith Lutheran Church.

Florence Hansen

Florence was born in Rapid City, SD, on July 1, 1924, to Walter C. and Beryl Kirchner Taylor.

She grew up in the ranching community east of Rapid City and attended the Valley View School; then Rapid City High School where she worked as a secretary during her senior year. Her brother, Richard, introduced her to his friend and fellow South Dakota School of Mines and Technology classmate, Darrel W. Hansen, of Newell, SD.

The couple was married on April 14, 1944, in Seattle, WA, where they resided while Darrel worked as an engineer for Boeing Aircraft.

Upon Darrel's enlistment in the Navy and his tour of duty in the Philippines, Florence stayed at the family ranch in Rapid Valley.

After World War II, Darrel worked on several hydroelectric projects as a civil engineer and the couple enjoyed living in a variety of places throughout the west: Pierre, SD; Keyhole Dam, WY; Silver City, SD; Dutch John, UT; Montrose, CO; Wild Horse, NV; Auburn, CA; and Grand Coulee, WA.

During these years, Florence was a volunteer in Pink and Gray Ladies.

She possessed a talent for serving and helping others and she believed in and practiced The Golden Rule.

Upon Darrel's retirement, they moved to Belle Fourche, SD, and ultimately found their ideal acreage in the Black Hills on the Mystic Road where they built their home in 1979.

Florence cared about the Hill City community.

She was a member of Friends of the Library and participated in their programs and annual book sales.

She was a crackerjack bridge player and played faithfully every week in Hill City for almost 30 years.

Her greatest love was riding horseback with Darrel when they helped her brother, Richard, and other area ranchers move cattle.

She was always ready to lend a hand with branding chores.

She also enjoyed her garden and tending to its bounty.

Known as "Bunch" by her family and close friends, she cherished and doted on each.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Darrel; daughter, Charmian McLellan, and husband, Jim, of Boulder, WY; son, Taylor W. Hansen, and wife, Elizabeth (Buffy) Healy, of Bozeman, MT; grandsons, Max Hansen, of Seattle, WA, and Simon Hansen, of Bozeman, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Constance Blair and Alice Sanders, and her brothers, Harold (Gene) Taylor and Richard Taylor.

No services are planned at this time for Florence Leila Taylor Hansen, 85, of Hill City, SD, who passed away on June 15, 2010.

Alfred Sanford Burnham V

Alfred Sanford Burnham V, 59, Rapid City, died Friday June 11, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He served in the US Marines.

Alfred is survived by his 3 sons, Alfred Sanford Burnham, VI; Austin Burnham, both of Lead; Myles Burnham, Rapid City; 1 grandchild, Alfred Sanford Burnham VII; 3 sisters, Sandra and husband Dave Smith, Ft. Bragg, CA; Sydney Baumgartner, Santa Barbara, CA; Barbara Burnham, Fresno, CA; Robyn Burnham, Ann Arbor, MI; ex-wife, Patricia Burnham, Lead; 1 niece and 1 nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held at a later date.

Beverly Myers Nelson

Beverly Myers Nelson, 80, Rapid City, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospice House.

She was born November 11, 1929 in Rapid City to Lee Carl and Louise (Galster) Myers.

Her paternal grandparents were Dorsey William and Ruberta (Stanley) Myers, both of West Virginia.

Her maternal grandparents were Gottlieb G. Galster, Sr. of Odessa, Crimea, Russia and Freida Burchart Galster of Tripp, SD.

She married Otis Clay Nelson on December 6, 1949 in Rapid City.

She was a charter member of the Rapid City Society for Genealogical Research.

She was employed at Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 5 years and Control Data (later Sanmina SCI) for 22 years.

She enjoyed many hobbies including driving across the US while touring attractions and visiting relatives.

The many people who were fortunate to have known her, have experienced her kindness, generosity, positive attitude and her phenomenal sense of humor.

She never lost those qualities, even after being diagnosed with Mesothelioma, November, 2008. Her courage and strength are inspiration to us all.

She is survived by 3 daughters, Terri Lee Galbraith, Julli Sue Nelson both of Rapid City and Vicki Jo Nelson, Sacramento, CA; 6 grandchildren, Tanja Galbraith Wilke, Matthew Galbraith, Aaron Galbraith, Dustin Voss, Daniel Voss and Tiffani Thomas; 3 great granddaughters, Janaye Galbraith, Cora Spease and Malina Unkle and a brother, Gary Myers (Sue Burrus), Rapid City.

The family is hosting a gathering of family and friends on Saturday, June 26, 2010 from 1-3 p.m. at the American Legion, 818 E. St. Patrick St., Rapid City.

Mildred R. 'Millie' Cooper

Mildred Rose ‘Millie’ Cooper, 74, Rapid City, died Thursday, July 15, 2010 at a local nursing home.

Millie was born in New Underwood, SD to John and Susan (Gillen) Wieser on October 20, 1935.

She graduated from Wasta High School and then married Jack Cooper July 18, 1953 in New Underwood.

Millie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She loved gardening, antiquing and canning.

She had a tender heart to any stray animal that was found on her doorstep.

Most of all, Millie loved a good deal and couldn’t pass up a good garage sale.

Loving survivors include her husband, Jack; 2 daughters, Nancy Beka and her husband Charley, Diane Rose Cooper all of Rapid City; 4 grandchildren Brian and Tyler Beka, Cheyenne, WY, Stephanie and Anthony Baris, Syracuse, NY; 2 sisters, Mary Hoehn, Rapid City and Aggie Hause, Ogema, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, 5 brothers, Joe, Harold, Gerald, Carl and Clarence Wieser and 2 sisters, Angie Carpenter and Kitty Fenner.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday July 20, 2010 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Julie Norwood officiating.

Interment will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park.

Keith M. Reed Sr

Keith M. Reed Sr died Saturday April 22, 2006 at his home in Rapid City surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren.

He was born in Faulkton, South Dakota on March 12, 1927 to Harry and Margaret (Heber) Reed.

He was in active duty in the Army from 1945 to 1947.

He met and married O. Rose Steele on June 14, 1948 at Redfield, South Dakota.

In his early career he owned and operated a paint and body shop in Redfield South Dakota.

During his lifetime he worked in the Lead Mine, drove truck for Farrier Red Owl, Midwest Coast Trucking, Nash Finch and finally Metz Bakery.

His passion after retirement was tinkering in his garage repairing family cars.

He didn’t think twice about going to Central High parking lot and checking his grandchildren’s cars for odometer readings and oil levels.

If the oil was low, or there were too many miles driven, or the car was dirty, a note was left on the windshield to see him after school.

He was social at the Hardees and Walmart coffee shops on a daily basis.

Recently when he was not able to be active, he enjoyed watching the antics of his cat and the neighborhood squirrels and birds.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his youngest brother Ronald Reed, his sister Shirley Reed Beckler, his twin brother Kenneth Reed and his granddaughter Shelley Heinbaugh.

He is survived by his loving wife Rose, a brother Donald Reed of Brentford SD, and two dear sister-in-laws, Phyllis Reed, and Betty Reed both of Aberdeen SD.

His children: son Keith Jr & Linda and children: Jason Odenbach, Raelene & Kenny Ward, Heather Reed, Misty Reed and Bill Reed.

Daughter Roxanne Reed & Art and children: Ben Heinbaugh, Rocky & Vicki Reed, daughter Margaret Patterson & Ron and children: Jason Flesner, Jarred & Sheila Flesner, Joy & Ron Cooper, Daughter Shirley Laino & Bruce of Grand Junction CO. and children: Olivia Laino, Jackie Laino and Andrew Laino Daughter Rebecca Reed & Jereme and children: Dion Brown Jr, Amber Brown, Chance Brown and Loren Curnutte.

Daughter Ruth Reed and her special friend Tracy. He also was blessed with 10 great grandchildren: Alecia, Amelia, and Kenny Jr, Tabitha, James, Tianna, Kayne, Tierra, Hailey and Lindsey.

A special thanks to his neighbors and friends including Dee, George, Cristina & Sons, and Terry.

Services will be held at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home in Rapid City Thursday April 27, 2006 at 10:00am.

Visitation will be Wednesday April 26th from 4pm until 8pm at the funeral home.

Interment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery at 11:30 with full military honors provided by VFW Post #1273.

A luncheon will be held at Minneluzahan Senior Citizen Center at 1:30pm until 3:30 pm hosted by the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Laurel Hagen

Laurel Hagen, 85, Rapid City died Monday, Oct. 24, 2011 at Clarkson-Mt. View Nursing Home.

She was born Feb. 27, 1926 in Cody, NE to Eugene and Vera (Brow) Lesher.

Laurel Graduated from Nursing School in Lincoln, NE as a registered nurse and was the County Health Nurse for Fall River County for 25 years.

Laurel married Theodore W. Hagen on April 4th, 1948.

She was a member of the United Churches in Hot Springs and played the organ there for a number of years.

She loved her flower gardens and traveling.

Laurel is survived by her two sons, Ted (Janet) Hagen, White Post, VA and Gene (Beckie) Hagen, Garland, TX; 4 grandchildren, Stuart and Marc Hagen, Garland TX; Lisa Rogers, Davidson, NC and Scott Hagen, Richmond, VA and 1 great grandchild, Grace Hagen, daughter of Stuart and Jamie.

She is preceded in death by her husband Theodore William Hagen, March 22, 2003.

Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m., Thursday Nov. 10, 2011 at Black Hills National Cemetery with Rev. Peter Dahlberg officiating.

Bertha S. Johnson

Bertha S. Johnson, 99, Rapid City, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at RC Regional Hospital.

On August 1, 1912, Bertha entered the world, the third of four daughters born to Harry and Alice Richards.

She grew up on the family homestead outside of Newell, attending country school through eighth grade and then graduating from Newell High School.

She married Fred E. Johnson in 1932 and to this union were born four children.

She and Fred began their married life in Newell, moving next to New Underwood and settling in Rapid City.

In 1941, they went into business for themselves, establishing Johnson Machine.

Bertha was a charter member of the Does Drove 33, and also was active in garden club, First Presbyterian Women, and a local china painting group.

She won many ribbons on her china painting entries at the Central States Fair and could always be counted on to have many other craft projects underway.

After Fred’s death, Bertha moved to Westhills Village but remained active through her various interests.

Her hands always were busy with a craft project, jigsaw puzzle or flowers.

She approached every day as an opportunity to learn something new.

Bertha will be sorely missed by her surviving children: Rob of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Sylvia (Jerry) Haag of Olpe, Kan., and James of Lincoln, Mont.; as well as her 13 grandchildren, 24 great- grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Freddie, and daughter-in-law Willa.

Bertha’s sense of humor and zest for life touched the lives of many.

Through her pioneering spirit, she taught us to do our best with what we’re given and to look forward to what each new day has to offer.

Memorial services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 11 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cornerstone Mission.

Susy (Wust) Lawrence

Susy (Wust) Lawrence, 78, Rapid City, passed away early Saturday morning, February 14, 2015, of complications from diabetes.

She was born on the 15th of February, 1938 in Zurich, Switzerland.

She graduated from high school and worked as a buyer for a major department store.

In 1958 she met a US Air Force Officer on a blind date.

They were later married on the 19th of July 1958.

They traveled the world for the next 21 years having two daughters, Valerie and Shannen.

Following retirement in 1974, they lived in Lake Benton, MN; Yaka, MT and finally settled in Rapid City, where Susy was active in the Minneluzahan Senior Citizens Center. Susy is survived by her husband Richard, her two daughters, Valerie Lawrence and Shannen (Curtis) Sheafer; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Tara, Joshua, Quaid, Noah and Taite and two great grandchildren, Ryley and Emmalee.

Interment will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery at a later date.

Edward ‘Eddie’ Cameron Swift

Edward ‘Eddie’ Cameron Swift, 74, Gillette, WY and formerly of Rapid City died Thursday, February 19, 2015 at the Pioneer Manor in Gillette, WY. He was born in Mobridge, SD to Elmer and Norma (Stowell) Swift. Eddie is survived by two brothers, George Swift, Grasston, MN and Randy Swift, Big Lake, MN; and four sisters, Nancy Erickson, Stillwater, MN; Mary Luke, Wyoming, MN; Gail Swift, Minneapolis, MN and Judy Pruss, Gillette, WY.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Lewis, Ross, Tommy ‘Duke’ and his twin brother Elmer.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 23, 2015; visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Menefee officiating.

Interment will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park.
