John William Flanagan
John William Flanagan, 77, Belle Fourche, died Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m., at the Belle Fourche Community Hall with Bill Opp officiating.

John was born March 25, 1923 in Onaka to George Thomas and Leta (Davis) Flanagan. He grew up in Timber Lake and the surrounding area. John entered the United States Army on April 6, 1943 in San Francisco, Calif. He served in China, India, Burma, Southern Philippines, Luzon and the Western Pacific. He was honorably discharged with the rank of SGT on Jan. 15, 1946 in Camp McCoy, Wis. John married Connie Trojahn on Jan. 25, 1947 in Selby. They ranched on what was his parents ranch south west of Trail City. In 1965 they moved off the ranch and he began working contract fencing. They moved to Nisland in 1971 and to Belle Fourche in 1993 where he has since resided. He married Caroline Kay Beeler Oct. 19, 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Caroline Kay Flanagan, Belle Fourche; two daughters, Charlotte Leta O’Leary, Belle Fourche, and Stella Mary and David Ager, Belle Fourche; two sons, Blaine Lee Flanagan, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Rex George and Patty Flanagan, Nisland; three stepsons, Delber, James and Gary; one stepdaughter, Dustie; three sisters, Eleanor Robinson, Haywood, Calif., Elizabeth Wiekham, Salem, Ore., and Lois Marshall, Timber Lake; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Connie.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Lung Association, 1212 West Elkhorn STE 1, Sioux Falls, SD 57104-0218.

Milo Aunton Albertson
Milo Aunton Albertson, 80, of Belle Fourche died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000 at his home in Belle Fourche.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 8 at Kline Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche with pastor Robert Waddell officiating. Burial followed at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.

He was born July 28, 1920 to Albert Ludvig and Sena Marie (Sharon) Albertson. He grew up on the family homestead at Twilight and attended Karninen School.

He worked for the CC camp and helped build Orman Dam. He and his brother Leo hauled hay from North Dakota to South Dakota. In October 1942 Milo entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged October 1945. Milo married Eva Mae Huseby, May 25, 1952. He worked for American Colloid until retiring in 1977.
He is survived by his son David Aunton Albertson, Belle Fourche; step-son, Alvin C. Lee, Miles City, Mont.; daughter, Marie Rachel TeBeest, Mandan, N.D.; step-daughter Anna Jane Jochim, Salem, N.D.; two brothers, Hans Albertson, Homer, Alaska, and Leo Albertson, Big Bear, Calif.; two sisters, Margaret Seieroe, Walnut, Calif., and Nina Seieroe, Hemit, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Violet Albertson, Black Hawk, and Mildred Albertson, Charleston, S.C.; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Eva in 1994, son Lee Roy Albertson and three brothers.

Melvin E. Delzer
Melvin E. Delzer, 73, of Spearfish, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 14 at United Methodist Church in Spearfish with Rev. Kip Roozen officiating. Burial followed with military honors in Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.

Melvin Delzer was born in Hague, N.D. on March 15, 1927. He grew up in Selby where he graduated from high school in 1945 and immediately enlisted in the Navy. Melvin served on the carrier USS Hornet CV-12 in the Pacific through the end of W.W.II. With an honorable discharge he returned to Selby. He married Gloria Cheskey on Aug. 29, 1947 and settled in Selby where they purchased the DeLux Cafe. In 1950, he founded Delzer Excavating, which grew into Delzer Construction Company. In 1970 the Delzer family relocated to Rapid City. By the late 1970’s Melvin’s business holdings had grown to include, along with Delzer Construction, Aggregates Gravel & Paving, Centennial Quarry, Pepper Oil & Gas, Fort Union Coal Mine, Golden Plains Feedlot and a 75,000 acre farming and ranching operation.

In 1980 Melvin and Gloria moved permanently to their Spearfish Valley Ranch just north of Spearfish. By the late 1980’s he settled into semi-retirement, maintaining just the farm and ranch operations, in which he was actively involved until the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife Gloria; four sons, Roger and Sharon, Ross and Barb, Charles and Nicole, and Bernard; five grandchildren and one great-grandson; one sister, Alma and Elmer Preszler; and one brother Harvey and Hilda.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Anna Delzer, daughter Colleen Delzer, and granddaughter Denae Delzer.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests checks payable to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation mailed to The Delzer Family, Box 1045, Spearfish, SD 57783.

Pauline (Zorn) Yaeger
Pauline (Zorn) Yaeger, 87, of Belle Fourche died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at the Long Term Care Center in Belle Fourche.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Nisland Independent Community Church with Pastor Bob Reinsch officiating. Interment followed at Pineslope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.

Pauline was born Aug. 1, 1913 at Maywood, Ill., the fifth of 12 children born to Phillip and Dorothea (Herzog) Zorn. The family moved to South Dakota in 1931 living east of Belle Fourche and then moving to Fruitdale.

She married William Yaeger on Nov. 22, 1931 at the family home in Fruitdale. They lived in Scotts Bluff County, Neb., in Chicago, in Butte County, near Vale and near Nisland, and in Milwaukee, Wis. Bill retired in 1974 and they moved back to Nisland where they lived for 20 years and then moved to Belle Fourche. He passed away in 1995.

Pauline was a member of the Riverside Extension Club and of Nisland Church groups.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy and Jim Ross of Belle Fourche, and Barbara Franzen of Anchorage, Alaska; one son, William Phillip and Donna Yaeger of Littleton, Colo.; 14 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Nisland Church.

Oscar Orwick
Oscar Orwick, 91, passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Funeral services will be held at Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Spearfish with Pastor Kent Stillson officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Spearfish.

Oscar was born Nov. 18, 1909 in Aurora County near Mitchell to Osten and Ana (Kvam) Orwick. He attended rural school at Ball near Sulphur. He graduated from the School of Agriculture at Brookings in 1930. While a young man he and his brother raised sheep on their ranch at Sulphur. In 1935 he built and re-established the Zeona Store and Post Office, where he remained Postmaster until 1951. While at Zeona he met and married Nina Holtry on June 27, 1937. He bought the Holtry Ranch in 1950 and spent his productive years there which had been his most precious dream and memories. In 1993, they sold the ranch and moved to Spearfish. Oscar enjoyed a life of hunting, fishing, trapping and traveling.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Nina Orwick, Spearfish, one sister Lizzie Bekken, Belle Fourche and a host of nephews, nieces and friends.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the elevator fund at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Spearfish.

ALFRED D. TIESZEN

Alfred D. Tieszen passed on to his eternal life on Aug. 31, 2002, at the age of 91. Alfred was the husband of Ida Ortman Tieszen and the father of Eileen Tieszen Willems.

Alfred grew up in Marion on a farm and he continued in farming while living in South Dakota. On Aug. 20, 1937, he was united in marriage to Ida Ortman. They enjoyed farming hear Marion. Alfred was active in the Silver Lake Mennonite Church and was on the school board for the Dick School where his daughter Eileen attended. Alfred enjoyed his farming and was involved in various agriculture projects and working together with his farming neighbors. Alfred also was active with the community in getting electrical lines for the farmers and helped with the installation of better telephone services for the area. Alfred was also interested in his wife's community projects and helped whenever possible. As school board member of his daughter's school, he was an active participant in providing the Dick School with playground equipment and helped install a kitchen in the school, which could provide hot lunches for the children. He enjoyed various hobbies, such as bread baking and travel. Alfred often spoke of their travels to South America where they visited their daughter. His journey by dugout canoe into the Interior of the Chico of Columbia, South America, was a very special memory. Alfred also loved animals and on the farm always gave special care to his horses and would always enjoyed the company of his faithful dog.

In 1960, Alfred and Ida left their farm and moved to Lodi, Calif. There they became involved in their Mennonite Church and Alfred worked for the Lodi Public School District in the maintenance department. They enjoyed exploring the West Coast and made many friends there. In 1972, Ida suffered a stroke and they decided to relocate to their daughter's home in Ithaca, N.Y. After Alfred's retirement he spent his time with Ida and together they enjoyed years of camping in state parks and traveling.

The entire family moved to Lancaster, Pa., in 1983, and there Alfred and Ida built a retirement home which they enjoyed so much. Shortly after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary Ida passed on and Alfred continued to live in his home for 10 years. He was very active and enjoyed the yard work and kept his kitchen warm with baking fresh breads, cakes and delicious pies. He also took loving care of his dog, Toby.

In 1999, Alfred came to live with his daughter Eileen and family. Until his passing he was very involved in senior citizen activities at Landis Homes three days a week and enjoyed helping Eileen and Norm with the many household projects. He never missed an opportunity for a ride out in the country; he loved the countryside.

In the last weeks of his life he continued to express the joy of a good life and the love for his family, but he really wanted to join his sweetheart, Ida, and go to his eternal resting place. God granted him his wish and the gentle soul went to meet his Master in peace and total contentment. Hospice of Lancaster County provided angelic care during those last weeks, though not in pain they made him very comfortable and provided the family with wonderful support services.

Survivors include his daughter, Eileen Ann, wife of Dr. Norm J. Willems; granddaughter, Danijela Willems Vidovic, wife of Marjian Vidovic; and two great grandchildren, Stjephan and Bruno; and his beloved dog, Toby.

Alfred was one of 12 children from the family of Rev. David and Kathrina Schmidt-Tieszen. Alfred's brothers and sisters have all preceded him in death. Alfred's nephews and nieces are living at various locations in the United States.

Alfred's grandson, Marijan Vidovic, officiated at the celebration service of Alfred's life. Alfred was laid to rest at the Zeltenreich Cemetery, New Holland, Pa.

Our family will miss this kind and gentle soul. Dad gave unconditional love, his family meant everything to him. Thank you for being a wonderful father and friend.

Lloyd Ericson Micheel
Lloyd Ericson Micheel, 83, Hot Springs, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Ft. Meade VA Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 23 at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Dan Barcus officiating. Burial followed with military honors at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Lloyd was born Dec. 22, 1917 at Wood Lake, Neb. to Eric Bernard and Sadie Etta (Davis) Micheel. The family moved to Sparks, Neb., where he attended school. After completing his education he worked for area ranchers in the Sandhills of Nebraska.

He married Reta Roundy at Idaho Falls, Idaho on Dec. 4, 1941. Lloyd joined the Army and served his country honorably until his discharge on Sept. 26, 1945. He returned to Valentine, Neb., where he continued to work for ranches. In 1949 through 1950, he was the Nebraska State calf roper and was a pick up man for several rodeo stock contractors.

Lloyd worked for the Nebraska Brand Board and the family moved to Grand Island. They later returned to the Valentine area when he went to work for the local sale barn. In 1960, they moved to Hyannis, Neb., where he leased part of a ranch. The family also lived near Mullen, Neb., where Lloyd operated a ranch.

In 1965, he worked construction for Missouri Valley Construction Company where he operated heavy equipment. The family lived in Seneca where they operated a railroad café for the Burlington Northern Railroad. As Lloyd neared retirement he worked the summer months with the construction company and during the winter months he drove trucks. In 1996, he retired and moved to Hot Springs.

Lloyd was a member of the American Legion in Valentine, Mullen and Hot Springs, and was a member of the DAV. He was also a member of the Hot Springs Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Reta Micheel, Hot Springs; two sons, Bernie Micheel, Newell, and Jack Micheel, Seneca, Neb.; one daughter, Bonnie Schemm, Ft. Collins, Colo.; one sister, Libbey Tethrow, Mesa, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

Alma R. Foxley
Alma R. Foxley, 85, Newell, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at her residence near Newell.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 2 at First Lutheran Church in Newell with Pastor Deb Geelsdotter officiating. Burial followed at Hope Cemetery near Newell.

Alma Rosina was born Oct. 21, 1915 to John and Rosina (Hoff) Burrer at their homestead east of Bison. She grew up there and attended Meadow Central School in Meadow.

Alma continued living at home and caring for her dad and brothers after her mother passed away in 1934. She married Arthur John (Bud) Foxley on May 1, 1937 at Bison. Following their marriage they lived in Colorado and worked on a ranch where Alma cooked for the ranch help. In 1948, Bud and Alma ran the Usta store at Usta, and Alma cooked for the bridge crew when Highway 73 was rebuilt. Following their move to Newell in 1949, Bud and Alma purchased the Cove Café. Later Alma did waitress work in Lemmon, Eagle Butte and Newell. She also worked in the Ben Franklin at Lemmon, Eagle Butte and the V-Store in Newell.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Newell.

Survivors include three daughters, Janice and Lee Alden of Newell, Delores and Nolan Sexton of rural Bison, and Lenora Ann and Jim Marlow of Shoals, Texas; two brothers, Gerry Burrer of Macon, Ga., and Alan Burrer of Prairie City; three sisters, Vi Week and Grace Martin, both of Spearfish, and Mary Ann Perkins of Sitka, Alaska; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband “Bud,” her parents, stepmother, five brothers, two sisters and one great-grandson.

Arthur Heitz
Arthur Heitz, 90, Sturgis, died at Sturgis community Health Care Center on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2001. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 7 at Sturgis Assembly of God with Pastor Daryl Wileman officiating. Burial followed at Bear Butte Cemetery.

Arthur was born at Gackle, N.D. on Feb. 10, 1911 to August and Elizabeth (Hust) Heitz. He grew up in North Dakota and was married to Adelia Erdman at Jamestown, N.D. They moved to Belle Fourche where Arthur worked with sugar beets. They then moved to the Hattie Gilbert Ranch for eight years, after which they rented a farm at Beulah for one year. Next they moved to St. Onge at the Reddick Farm. In 1948 they purchased a farm at Arpan and farmed until 1973 when they moved into Sturgis. While living at Arpan he worked for the Newell Experimental Station from 1968 until 1973. They have lived in Sturgis since.

While living in Sturgis Arthur worked for the County Highway Department. He was the Sunday School Superintendent at Belle Fourche Open Bible Church from 1938 until 1957. He was a member of the Assembly of God in Newell from 1957 until 1973 and served on the church board at Sturgis Assembly of God after moving to Sturgis. Arthur and Adelia were married for 68 years.

Survivors include his wife, Adelia of Sturgis; three sons, Norbert and Dolores Heitz of Kissimmee, Fla., Clarence and Beverly Heitz of Phoenix, Ariz., and Arthur Jr. and Jeanne Heitz of Vale; two daughters Adelia Vig of Great Falls, Mont., and Elaine and Bob Edwards of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister Rayanda Eichle of Lodi, Calif.; one brother, Norbert Heitz of Detroit Lake, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law Maureen Heitz, two sisters, Lydia Ketterling and Sally Eichle, and two brothers, Ted and Fred Heitz.

A memorial has been established to Sturgis Assembly of God.

Elmer A. Edwards
Elmer A. Edwards, 86, Hot Springs, died Monday, July 30, 2001 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 3 at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bill Martin officiating. Burial followed at Bear Butte Cemetery.

Elmer was born June 3, 1915, at Dry Creek, east of Newell, to Willis and Ella (Jones) Edwards. He farmed south of Vale for most of his life. Elmer married Lucille Meyer Wulf on April 7, 1959, at Sturgis. He started working for Meade County on the county bridge crew in 1962. Elmer has lived with his daughter in Hot Springs since 1995.

Survivors include one daughter, Delores and David McFarland, Hot Springs; three sons, Don and Mary Wulf, Sturgis, Fritz and Kay Wulf, Boone, Iowa, and Larry and Chicko Wulf, Riverdale, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife, and one sister, June Shuck.
