Elsie Ellen Steffes

Elsie Ellen Steffes, 89, Sturgis, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at the Sturgis Community Health Care Center.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 18, at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. James Olson officiating. Burial followed at St. Aloysius Cemetery.
Elsie was born Feb. 25, 1912, at Hereford, S.D., to Henry and Elizabeth (Kiepke) Niederwerder. She grew up and attended grade school at Hereford. She graduated from New Underwood High School. She graduated from Spearfish Normal School and taught in rural Meade County schools for eight years.
Elsie married Albert Steffes on June 28, 1939, at Newcastle, Wyo. They moved to Vale, S.D., where they ranched for 54 years. Elsie was also very active in crafts and the choir at the Senior Citizen’s Center.
Survivors include two sons, Duane Steffes of Kent, Wash., and Darrell Steffes of Vale; two daughters, Donna Duprel of Vale and Karen Speed of Union Center, S.D.; one sister, Hilda Green, Sturgis; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
Her parents, her husband, one twin sister, and one brother preceded her in death.
A memorial has been established to the Meade County Senior Citizen’s Center.

Selma L. Hobson

Selma L. Hobson, 86, Rapid City, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at the Wesleyan Health Care Center in Rapid City.
Funeral Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City with Rev. Al Jacobson and Rev. Don Brendtro Officiating. Burial followed at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Selma was born Dec. 28, 1915, at Belle Fourche, S.D. to Nels and Hilda (Sundquist) Norlin. She married C. Louis Hobson on July 7, 1942, at Newell, S.D. They moved from Newell to Washington State in 1942 and lived in Seattle, Wash. for 26 years. She worked as an executive secretary for an engineering firm in Seattle. They returned to Newell in November of 1979. In 1992, she moved to Rapid City and had lived there since.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Newell and presently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City.
Survivors include one sister, Olga Norlin, Rapid City; and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents, her husband, three sisters, and two brothers precede her in death.
A memorial has been established to the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Dorothy Reitz

Dorothy R. (Lungren) Reitz, 77, Spearfish, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 17 at United Church of Christ in Spearfish with Rev. Mel Miller officiating. Burial followed at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Dorothy was born Oct. 20, 1924, at Deaver, Wyo., to John and Anna Reinhardt. She attended school in Belle Fourche and then moved to Vale, S.D. She married Ruben Lungren on Jan. 4, 1942 in Rapid City. He passed away on Oct. 5, 1980. Dorothy worked at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center for 21 years and retired in 1984.
Dorothy married Henry Reitz on May 18, 1985, at Sturgis. They lived in Watsonville, Calif. until 1988 when they moved to Spearfish where they have lived since. She worked at the Valley Cafe in Spearfish, helping her daughter, for 10 years.
Survivors include her husband, Henry Reitz, Spearfish; four children, Ford and Cathley Lungren of Whitewood, S. D.; Peggy Reseter and special friend, Greg Calvert of Moatsville, W. Va.; Scott and Bobbi Jo Lungren of Spearfish; and Cindy and Alan Merkel of Spearfish; one brother, John and Virginia Reinhardt, Glenrock, Wyo.; three sisters, Betty and Dave Schmid of Belle Fourche; Mary Herman of Belle Fourche, and Freda and Duane Mailloux of Malta, Mont.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Her parents, her first husband, two sisters, and four brothers preceded her in death.
A memorial has been established.

James R. Caveye

James R. Caveye, age 53, best known to his family and friends as "Jim", died unexpectedly Sunday, September 24, 2000 at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs.
Funeral Services were Monday, October 2, 2000 at Isburg-McColley's Chapel with Pastor Gary Warren officiating.
Burial followed at the Custer Cemetery, Custer, SD.
Jim was born April 8, 1947 in Omaha, Neb. He was educated in Omaha, graduating from Archbishop Ryan High School in 1965. He was enlisted into the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in October of 1968. He was joined in marriage to Sandra Edsall on February 14, 1970 in Omaha. They moved to Hot Springs in 1974 and in 1976 Jim went to work for Hills Materials, where he had been employed as a Loader Operator at the time of his death.
Jim was an avid hunter and especially enjoyed his fishing trips with his wife, Sandy. He was also a member of Harmony Lodge #110 - Masonic Lodge of Hot Springs and the Minnekahta Volunteer Fire Dept. where he had also served on the Board of Directors.
A Memorial Fund has been established in his memory.
Grateful to have shared in his life are his wife of 30 years, Sandra Caveye, Hot Springs; their son, Rusty Caveye, Hot Springs; his father, Richard Caveye, Cedar Creek, Neb.; one sister, Linda (Mrs. Gerald) Wilson, Gretna, Neb.; two brothers, Ronald Caveye, Omaha and Bill Caveye and his wife, Barb of Waterloo, Neb.; nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Caveye and his grandparents.

Ward C. White

Ward C. White, 67, Denver, Colorado died February 2, 2001 at his home in Denver of natural causes.
Ward was born April 3, 1933 at Scenic, SD to Ward Winters White and Ellen Christensen. He graduated from New Underwood High School and Presentation School of Nursing. He attended St. Luke's School of Anesthesia. He married Marilyn Moeller on December 28, 1960. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
His military honors are Veteran's Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, China Service National Defense Service Medal, and China Service Medal.
He was an anesthetist, former Mayor of Hot Springs, and County Coroner for Fall River County for 13 years. He loved traveling, reading and cooking.
He is survived by one son Bernard White of Mira Loma, California; two daughters, Mary White of Fort Collins, CO; Rae Ann White of Minneapolis, MN; one brother: Dwight White of Plymouth, NE; three sisters: Ina Keester of Rapid City; Pat Collins of Rapid City; and La Vaughn Beaird of Rapid City; one grandson: Kieran White of Mira Loma, California. He is preceded in death by one daughter: Rita Ann; two sister and three brothers.
The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Food Bank for Larimer County c/o Allnutt Funeral Service.
Arrangements have been placed in the hands of Allnutt Funeral Service/Drake Road Chapel.

Amy Loretta Sieger

Amy Loretta Sieger, 95, of Oshkosh, Neb., passed away at the Highland Park Care Center in Alliance, Neb., Saturday morning, December 8, 2001.
Funeral services were held Dec. 12, 2001 at the Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh with Pastor Cliff Transmeier of the Lisco Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Oshkosh Cemetery.
Amy Loretta Sieger, the daughter of Lurton and Amy (Phillips) Jay, was born on November 25, 1906 at Alliance, NE. The family lived on a ranch southwest of town and at an early age moved to a ranch northeast of Whitman in Cherry County. She spent many happy times, fishing, hunting and working on the ranch while growing up. She loved the Sandhills and enjoyed telling stories of her early years there. Due to the distance from town, when it became time for High School, she and her sister Ilas stayed in Alliance and worked at the St. Joseph's Hospital to pay room and board while attended school there. Following graduation, she stayed on and attended the Hospital School for nurses and graduated June 25, 1928 with her nursing degree.
While visiting a friend in South Dakota, she met Leonard Sieger who lived on the family ranch at Buffalo Gap, S.D. On June 25, 1928 they were married at Hyannis. They made their home on Leonard's ranch and she stayed there until 1997, when she moved with her son Donald to their present ranch north of Oshkosh.
In June of 1998 she was hospitalized with a stroke, but recovered enough to move back to the ranch. She was cared for by her son and her Health Care Nurse, Betty Zlomke until returning to the hospital with a second stroke on October 27th of this year. She then moved to the Highland Park Care Center.
She enjoyed a quiet home life, her garden, flower and ranch livestock. She was a devoted wife and mother and was always willing and able to help anyone she could.
Survivors include her son Donald of Oshkosh and many nieces and nephews.
Amy Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, July, 1976, her parents, one brother, Lurton H. Jay, three sisters, Lela Phipps, Anna Vandermate and Ilas Jay, and an infant brother and sister.
A memorial is being established and may be made in care of the family.

Charles A. Hemler

HOT SPRINGS – Charles A. Hemler, 79, of Hot Springs, died February 19, 2002 at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs. Funeral Services were Friday, February 22, 2002 at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gary Warren officiating.
Burial followed at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis.
Charles was born August 31, 1922 to William Bryan and Margie A. (Davis) Hemler in Sundance, Wyo. In 1928, Charlie moved with his family to Hot Springs, South Dakota where he attended school. After high school he joined the United States Navy and served during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, Charlie went to work at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs as the Building and Grounds keeper, and worked there until his retirement in 1975. Charlie then continued to live in Hot Springs.
Survivors include his sister and brother in law: Dr. and Mrs. Robert Holwell of Hot Springs; nieces and nephews: Jill and Lalo Evangelista and their children Danny and Alicia; David B. Holwell; David Lee Headman and his children Holly and Dawn, Holly's daughter Cumatagen; Robert Wayne Holwell II and his wife Hilary and their children Hannah and Robert Wayne Holwell III; Scott A. Holwell and his wife Sheila and their children Sean and Seth; Tricia Holwell and cousins.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepfather, and three brothers.
Arrangements were placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs.

Helen Maxine Milos

Helen Maxine Milos, 75, of Hot Springs, died Thursday, February 8, 2001 at her home in Hot Springs.
Visitation took place Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001 at Isburg-McColley's funeral home in Hot Springs.
Funeral Services were held at Isburg-McColley's Chapel Hot Springs, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001.
Burial was at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis.
Helen Schwartz was born November 1, 1925 in Wessington Springs, SD to Leo and Lillian (Dillinger) Schwartz. She grew up and attended school in Wessington Springs until 1941 when the family moved to Hot Springs.
Helen finished her High School years in Hot Springs and was a member of the Hot Springs High School cheerleaders. After graduating Helen married Dale Flanagan at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Hot Springs. To this union two sons were born; Dennis Flanagan and Randy Flanagan. Helen worked as a secretary for the VA hospital, Wind Cave National Park, Corps of Engineers during the building of the Cottonwood Dam, the Box Elder Job Corps, and as a Dispatcher for the city of Hot Springs. On November 1, 1972, she married Antone "Tony" Milos in Sturgis. Tony and Helen lived in Lead and Deadwood, SD where Tony worked for the Railroad until he was transferred to Hot Springs in 1984. Helen and Tony later retired in Hot Springs.
Helen was a member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliary, the Bethesda Lutheran Church and Tops. Helen will always be remembered as a wonderful lady who loved to socialize. She enjoyed camping, bowling, golf, but most of all going on cruises. Helen will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Helen is survived by her husband Antone P. Milos of Hot Springs; two sons, Dennis Flanagan of Gillette, Wyo., Randy Flanagan of Hot Springs; one brother Kenneth and wife Evelyn Schwartz of Rapid City; one sister Beverly and husband John Gallegos of Buffalo Gap; five grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents and one brother.
Arrangements were placed in the care of Isburg- McColley's Chapel of the Hills, Hot Springs.

Katherine W. Twomey

Katherine W. Twomey, 95, of Rapid City, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
She was born May 27, 1905, in Osage Iowa, to Henry and Ethel Wilson. She attended school in Osage and graduated from Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa, in 1926. She married Charles J. Twomey on June 21, 1929 in Osage.
In 1935 they moved to Hot Springs, SD where Charles operated the Hot Springs Star from 1935 to 1947. Following the death of her husband in 1987, Katherine moved to Westhills Village, Rapid City, in 1988.
A prolific writer, Katherine wrote numerous articles for various publications. A number of her stories and poems received awards at the Central States Fair and the South Dakota State Fair. She also wrote two books, A Gardener's Year published in 1972 and Heartland Heritage, published in 1992. She co-authored the book, Early Hot Springs, published in 1983.
She was a member of PEO, Traveler's Club in Hot Springs, National Society of Daughter of the American Revolution, and National League of American Pen Women.
She is survived by two sons, Charles L. Twomey, Denver, Colorado, and West W. Twomey, Aurora, Colorado.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Hot Springs Public Library, Hot Springs.
Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.
Burial and graveside rites will be in Osage, Iowa.
