Ruth I. Cookson

BRIGHAM CITY, Utah– Mrs. Ruth Kimmey Cookson, 97, of Buffalo Gap, S.D., died at 8:16 a.m. Wednesday (August 29, 2001) in the Pioneer Care Center in Brigham City, Utah.
Born August 8, 1904 in Kahoka, Mo., Mrs. Cookson was the daughter of Samuel P.P. and Nora Izora Crow Pollock. She married John D. Kimmey, who preceded her in death. She later married Andrew Jackson Cookson on June 23, 1934 in Memphis, Mo. He also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Cookson was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and quilting.
Surviving are two sons; Roland C. Kimmey and his wife Marie of Buffalo Gap, S.D., and Ernest Samuel Kimmey and his wife Leona of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two grandchildren, Linda Snow of Hyrum, Utah., and C. Gene Kimmey and his wife Jerry of Warden, Wash.; twelve great grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cookson was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; five sisters; one daughter; and one grandchild.
Graveside services were held at the Kahoka City Cemetery in Kahoka, Mo. by the Rev. Kenneth Beckmann.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Marjorie L. Krutsch

HOT SPRINGS – Marjorie L. Krutsch, 76, of Hot Springs, died December 12, 2001 at the Hilltop Assisted Living in Hot Springs.
Funeral Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, December 17, 2001 at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Hot Springs with Pastor Dana Brooks officiating.
Burial was held at 2 p.m., Monday at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis.
Marjorie was born May 29, 1925 in Rapid City, S.D., to Harry and Ollie (Prall) White. She graduated from Hot Springs High School and later from the St. Lukes Hospital Denver Cadet Nurses Program. She worked at the Lutheran Hospital in Hot Springs and the Butler Clinic as a Registered Nurse. On June 2, 1946, Marjorie married Kenneth Winton Krutsch. They had one daughter together: Nancy Jeanne; born April 17, 1947. She was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church and the choir.
She is survived by one daughter: Nancy J. Kjar and her husband Donald of Paynesville, Minn.; two grandsons; Steven T. Kjar and his wife Cecile of Brussels, Belgium; and Scott R. Kjar of Maplewood, Minn.; one sister: Mary Jane Cote of Hot Springs; a cousin, John Prall and his wife, Lois, Hot Springs; nieces, nephews, and brother- and sister-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
A memorial has been established in her memory to benefit the Bethesda Lutheran Church School.
Arrangements were placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.

HAROLD KAUFMAN

Harold Kaufman, age 85, of 1251 Arizona Ave. SW, Huron, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Sioux Valley Hospital at Sioux Falls.
His funeral was scheduled for Wednesday, April 2 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating. Burial was planned at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be Rodney Unruh, Jerry Glanzer, Stephanie Goergen, Sandra Fast, Darlas Lehmann and Burton Kaufman.
Harold J. Kaufman was born on June 7, 1917, to John D. and Sarah (Schrag) Kaufman at Marion.
Upon his confession of faith, Rev. Alfred P. Waltner baptized Harold on Sept. 23, 1934, in the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church of Freeman.
Harold attended North Star District #66 grade school and Freeman High School and one year at Freeman Junior College. After graduation he taught at rural schools for five years after which he was drafted into the United States Army. He served in both the European and Asiatic Pacific Theatre of operation from July 9, 1942 to Feb. 4, 1946. After his honorable discharge he returned to farming. In 1952, he moved to Beadle County to farm and he also worked for Armour and Company.
He continued to be active in community affairs and he served on the Liberty Township Board.
On Feb. 17, 1967, Harold married Verbena Bitterman at the First United Methodist Church in Huron. They lived on a farm in the Yale area until his retirement in 1983 when they moved to Huron where he has lived since that time.
He was a life member of the Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1776, William Reaves American Legion Post #7 and the Huron Senior Center.
He is survived by two stepsons: Rodney (Carol) Woodruff, Belle Fourche, and Charles (Lori) Woodruff, Broadland; one stepdaughter, Janice (Pat) Conrade of Moorhead, Minn.; seven stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, Elvin (Pfrona) Kaufman. Live Oak, Fla.; two sisters: Melva Janowski, Munich, N.D., and Delsie Monroe, Rosemont, Calif., and many nieces, nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Verbena on Aug. 18, 2001; his parents; three brothers, Elias, Jacob and Richard; and five sisters: Anna, Elma, Linda, Elsie and Adina.

KENNETH J. HOFER

Kenneth J. Hofer was born Jan. 31, 1928, to Jacob L. Jr. and Anna S. (Hofer) Hofer. Kenneth was baptized in the Hutterthal Mennonite Church where he remained a faithful member and also willingly served on the church board.
On Feb. 4, 1951, he married Glennis Schrag. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he and Glennis made their home near Dolton. Dad was a meticulous farmer for 43 years after which he and Glennis retired in Freeman. They were privileged to have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family.
On Nov. 17, 2002, at the age of 74, he died of a massive stroke in Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Dad enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and pitching horseshoes. He had a knack for fixing most anything, which was much appreciated by his family and friends.
Dad was a caring and loving husband, father, and grandfather. His keen sense of humor was a delight for all who knew him
Remaining and grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Glennis; a son, Keith (Sharon), Dolton; two daughters: Janeen (Jerry) Ogden, Denver, Colo., and Marcia (Todd) Smith, Marion; a daughter-in-law, Joanne (Jim) Rumpler, Minot, N.D.; seven grandchildren: Rachel, Baylee, Sydney, Cristy, Celina, Alfredo and Cecilia; a sister, Marjorie Hofer, Freeman; three brothers: Melvin L. (Emma) of Freeman, Vernon J. (Norma) of Marion, Merlin L. (Sylvia), Parkston; and one brother-in-law, Arnold M. Hofer, Freeman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Jacob L. Jr. and Anna S. Hofer; a sister, Evelyn Hofer; and a son, Rocky.
The funeral was held Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Hutterthal Mennonite Church with Pastors Ivan and Rachel Friesen officiating. Organist was Shirley Hofer with Chad and Jessica Hofer as vocalists. Nicolle Timmerman was accompanist. Pallbearers were Todd Hofer, Lyndon Hofer, Shawn Hofer, Brad Dowden, Chris Hofer and Dallas Hofer. Interment was at Hutterthal Church Cemetery.

Betty Ellen Redfield

RAPID CITY – Betty Ellen Redfield, 81, of Rapid City, (formerly of Hot Springs), died February 19, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City.
Betty was born July 7, 1920 to Adam and Iola (Ewing) Slagel in Gregory County, South Dakota. She grew up in Madison, S.D. She graduated high school in Madison and later moved to Hot Springs in 1949. She married Virgil B. Redfield on September 21, 1946 in Mitchell, S.D. Betty went to Dakota State College and later got her Masters at Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb. She was a teacher in the eastern part of South Dakota, but taught mostly in Hot Springs for 41 years. Betty taught Morse Code during World War II to the Air Corps pilots. During her teaching career, she served on the State Board of Regents retiring in 1982. She also loved to read, travel, and visit such places as Scandinavia, England, China, and Australia.
Survivors include her husband, Virgil, of Rapid City; one brother, Garold "Bud" Slagel of Madison; nephew Gary Slagel of Conifer, Colo.; nieces Kay Whiting of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Dianne Eavenson of Licking, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews: Mary Redfield, Shawn Redfield; Paul Redfield III; John Redfield; Elizabeth Redfield and Margaret Redfield.
Funeral Services were February 21, 2002, at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs with Rev. Bruce Baum officiating. Burial followed at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to benefit the Faith Lutheran Church in Rapid City.
Arrangements were in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.

Bertha K. Montgomery

Bertha K. Montgomery, 98, of Hot Springs died Thursday, January 18, 2001 at the Castle Manor Nursing Home.
Memorial Services were Monday, January 22, 2001 at the Castle Manor Nursing Home with Gary Schweigert officiating.
Inurnment will be in Phoenix, Ariz.
Bertha was born November 7, 1902 in Hanson County, SD to Charles and Kathryn (Bender) Haas. She completed high school in 1920 in Bridgewater, SD and then taught rural schools for several years. Bertha married Ernest Montgomery in 1929. In 1940 they moved to Hot Springs. Her husband was supervisor of FmHa and she was the secretary to Ration Board for Fall River and Shannon Counties during World War II. Her husband passed away in 1947. She then went to work at the Court House and the Abstract office. Over the years Bertha was the Deputy Register of Deeds and Register of Deeds for about 26 years. After she retired from the Court House, she worked at the Model Hat Shop for 7 years. She then went to Phoenix, Ariz. for three years to take care of her mother. When she returned she worked for Southard Insurance in Hot Springs until her last retirement. Bertha was a member of the Episcopal Church and belonged to Business and Professional Women for 30 years. Bertha moved into the Evans Apartments in 1983 and then moved to the Castle Manor Nursing Home in 1998.
Bertha is survived by her brother Herbert Haas and his wife Pearl of Phoenix, Ariz.; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother.
Arrangements were placed in the care of Isburg-McColley's Chapel of the Hills, Hot Springs.

Theodore V. McClure

Theodore V. McClure, 67, Hot Springs, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001 on his ranch.
Services were Saturday, April 14, at the Rooks, Isburg Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Hauck officiating. Ted will be laid to rest at Highland Cemetery at Cascade, near Hot Springs.
Ted McClure was born December 28, 1933 to Charles Ralph and Willa Rebecca (Gilchrist) McClure in Hot Springs. He lived and ranched his entire life in the Cascade area.
Ted married Beverly Wiese in 1955. They were blessed with three children, Cathy, Ed and Rod.
Ted's life was devoted to his family and his love of the land. He spent 30 years with the State Forestry Service protecting the land from fires.
Ted is survived by his wife Beverly of Hot Springs; one daughter Cathy (husband Don) Olstad of Hot Springs; two sons Ed (wife Margaret) McClure of Hot Springs; Rod (wife Nita) McClure of Rapid City; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Jody and Chad Olstad; PFC Justin and Haley McClure; and Jacob and Cara McClure; four brothers, Leslie (wife Dorothy) McClure, Milliken, Colo.; Shirley (wife Enid) McClure, Hot Springs; Frank (wife Joyce) McClure, Dearborn Heights, Mich.; Charles-Jay (wife JoAnn) McClure, Grand Junction, Colo.; one sister, Eva Romey, Wenatchee, Wash. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Donald, one sister, Elma Strackbein and one brother-in-law, Vernon Romey.
A memorial has been established to the Cascade Volunteer Fire Department.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks, Isburg, McColley's Chapel of Hot Springs.

Ron Hedstrom

Ron Hedstrom died suddenly at his home in Mississippi on December 11, 2001. He was born on Dec. 3, 1965 in Washington state.
He was a very intelligent drafter and person whose witty sense of humor will be missed.
He is survived by his five children: Stashia and Marissa Hedstrom, both of Hot Springs and R.J., Tiffany and Anthony Hedstrom, all of Washington state.

Marie Lauing

HOT SPRINGS – Marie Lauing, 94, formerly of Blunt, S.D., died Wednesday, February 20, 2002, Castle Manor, Hot Springs, S.D. Visitation was Friday, February 22, 2002, a prayer service at Feigum Funeral Home, Pierre, S.D. Funeral service was Saturday, February 23, at United Methodist Church, Blunt, S.D. Interment followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blunt, S.D.
Marie was born November 6, 1907, Fontanelle, Iowa, the only daughter of George and Christina Sias. At age three, Marie moved with her parents and two older brothers, Chris and Gerald, to Blunt, which was home to Marie for the next 85 years. In September of 1995, she moved to Parkwood and later Maryhouse in Pierre prior to moving to Hot Springs for the last six months of her life.
On November 14, 1937, Marie was married to Henry Lauing of Blunt. The couple established their home on her parents farm south of Blunt where she had grown up and to this union five children were born. Marie lived a very full life working alongside her husband and raising their children. After the youngest child was in school, Marie returned to a very rewarding teaching career, most of which was spent in one-room country schools.
She always had time for her family, friends and neighbors or those in need. Marie loved to travel and had the joy of seeing much of the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico and Europe. A highlight for her was traveling to the Holy Land with her beloved brother, Gerald, and his wife, Volita. In her later years gardening, yard work and crocheting, along with loving and caring for all of her family became increasingly more important to her. She became lovingly known as the cookie Grandma to all of her extended family. Marie's cookie jar was never empty.
Of all of her many accomplishments, the greatest is the Godly heritage she has passed on to all of her children and grandchildren. Marie accepted Jesus as her Savior at a very young age and loved and served Him all of her life. She was a long-time member of the Church of Christ in Blunt which her parents helped to establish.
So grateful for having shared her life and her children Shirley (Dave) Schwarz of Spearfish, Viley (Mark) Reed of Ft. Pierre, Ollie (Waymon) Williams of Hot Springs, Bernard (Genie Wood) of Blunt and Suzanne (David) Lockhart of Hot Springs, 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hank, her parents, two brothers and an infant grandson.
