Helen Margaret Kenoyer

Helen Margaret Kenoyer, 90, of Sturgis, died at the Sturgis Community Health Care Center on Saturday, Feb, 10, 2001.
Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001 at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Frank McKeehan officiating. Burial will follow at the Bear Butte Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.
A memorial has been established to the special building fund at the United Methodist Church.
Helen was born at Pittsburgh, Penn. on August 9, 1910 to Benjamin Franklin and Mary (Colyer) Rickenbach. When she was 2 years old the parents moved to Oelrichs, where her father established a homestead. She was married to Claris Ervin Kenoyer at Oelrichs on November 15, 1930. In November of 1940 the couple moved to Glendale, Calif. to live until the spring of 1941 when they returned to SD and lived at Hot Springs. In the summer of 1941 they moved to Augusta, Kansas and resided there until the summer of 1944 when they returned to Hot Springs. In March of 1945 they moved to rural Sturgis where they lived. In 1997 Helen moved in to Sturgis and has lived there since.
Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Church Women, Idle Hour Extension Club and Western Dakota Antique Club.
Survivors include three sons, Clifford and his wife Shirley of Sturgis, Donald and his wife Pat of Urbana, Ohio and Stephen and his wife Anne of Rapid City. Also one brother, Herbert William Rickenbach of Chadron, Neb. and two sisters, Mary Dorothy Pettegrew of Chadron and Ada Lorenz of Hot Springs, and one daughter-in-law, Ila Kenoyer of Sioux Falls, SD also survive, along with eleven grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

Geraldine Mae Lewis

Geraldine Mae Lewis of Boulder, CO died Thursday, April 5, 2001 at the Hospice of Boulder County Care Center in Louisville, CO. She was 74.
She was born October 22, 1926, in Burr Oak, Kansas, to Gerald G. Smith and Gertrude Helman Smith. She married Kenneth Halls in 1946. They divorced. She married Lynn Lewis in 1967. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Lewis graduated from Boulder High School in 1944. She attended Charles Beauty School in Denver. She owned and operated Best Beauty Shop on the Hill with her first husband. They purchased the business in 1946. She also worked in various beauty salons in the area.
She was a member of the Community Baptist Church in Moab, Utah and was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Moab. She had been a resident of Boulder on and off during the past 50 years, most recently since 1970.
Survivors include a daughter, Gerry Ann Rhoe of Hot Springs, SD; a son, Charles Halls of Longmont, CO; a stepdaughter, Linda Halleman of Westminster, CO; a stepson, Dan Lewis of Westminster CO; five grandchildren, Anthony Rhoe, Andrew Halls, Ben Halleman, Amanda and Roberta Lewis.
Contributions may be made to Hospice of Boulder County, 1855 Plaza Drive, Louisville, CO 80027.
Crist Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond T. Millett

ARVADA, Colo. – Raymond T. Millett, 82, of Hot Springs, died February 11, 2002 in Arvada, Colorado.
Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 28, 2002, at Rooks- McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs, S.D. with Pastor Mark Crossman and Fr. Ed Harnsberger officiating.
Burial will take place at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, February 28, 2002, at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis.
Ray was born in Prescott, Arizona on April 28, 1919 to John and Johanna Millett. He was raised in Lead, SD., and graduated from Lead High School in 1938. Ray worked at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead and attended college at the University of Wyoming. In 1942, he married Betty Stanley and they had three children: Martha, Donna and Ron. Ray joined the Marine Corp in May of 1942 and served in the 4th Marine Division during WWII. Following his military service, Ray lived and worked in Hot Springs. He married Lorry Lou Hadden on November 24, 1961 and they raised two daughters: Sabra (Sam) and Suzette. Ray was employed as a Fireman at the Veterans Administration until his retirement in the early 1980's.
Ray's great loves in life were his family, music and sports. Throughout his life, he was active in sport and music activities. Ray spent his retirement years enjoying golf at the Southern Hills Golf Course and the Southern Hills Pool League.
Survivors include his daughters: Sabra Ann (Sam) Millett of Arvada, Colo., and Suzette Ann (Mrs. Brad) Williamson of Hot Springs; Martha (Mrs. Ron) Bennett of Montesano, Wash.; Donna (Mrs. Neil) Nelson of Roswell, Ga.; one son: Ron (wife Diana) Millett of Eagan, Minn.; two brothers: Gilbert Millett of Fremont, Calif.; and Clyde Millett of Granada Hills, Calif.; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His wife Lorry Lou preceded him in death.
A memorial has been established in Ray's memory to benefit the Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.

James R. Rowe

HOT SPRINGS – James R. Rowe, 76, of Hot Springs, passed away on February 18, 2002 at the Fall River Hospital in Hot Springs, S.D.
Funeral Services were Friday, February 22, 2002 at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel with Joe Birdsall officiating. Interment will be at a later date.
He was born in Denison, Iowa on February 10, 1926 to Dr. Frank and Charlotte (Kleckner) Rowe. He was the youngest of eight children. Jim moved to California in the early 1950's. He retired after 27 years from Lyon Moving and Storage where he worked filing documents with the Public Utilities Commission. After the company moved to Texas he went to work for Rockwell International working as a proof reader on the shuttle project. He retired from there in 1990. In 1991, he and his wife, Betty, moved to Hot Springs. Although he did not go to many social events he enjoyed life here. The people here made him feel loved when they greeted him with a smile, a wave or a short conversation. Anyone who knew Jim knew of his love for music and he was the biggest booster for Sid Phelps and all the members of the Black Hills Jazz Band that they could have. Jim was a kind, gentle man and will be missed by all who crossed his path. He was a member of the Church of Christ (Christian) in Hot Springs and enjoyed the fellowship with the people there.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Hot Springs; one son, Mike Olson (Katherine) of Long Beach, Calif.; one daughter, Nancy Olson of Rosemead, Calif.; three grand-children, Matthew, Mark and Patricia; one sister, Marian LaBaron of Huntington Beach, Calif.; brothers, Ken and Mortie of Brentwood, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Marena of San Jose, Calif., Dorothy Gordon of Hot Springs, Mae Neely of Lakewood, Calif. and one brother-in-law George Sexton of Marietta, Ga.; many nieces and nephews; and many freinds.
A memorial has been established in Jim's memory to benefit CHAD (Community Health and Development) of Hot Springs at 209 North 16th Street.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.

Dorothy Fassett

FORT WORTH, Texas – Dorothy Margaret "Dottie" (Gordon) Fassett, 73, died in Fort Worth, Texas, August 3, 2001, after a long struggle with lung disease.
Dorothy was born July 13, 1928 to Huston and Margaret Gordon. She grew up in and around Hot Springs, S.D. She graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1946. She met and married her husband of 54 years, Chester "Chet" Allen Fassett.
After she married, she made a loving home for her family, and she served side by side with Chet in a variety of US Air Force assignments in the United States, Europe, and the Far East. They moved to Fort Worth, Texas, in 1984.
She enjoyed collecting beautiful things, and she had a special place in her heart for animals, particularly those suffering from abuse.
She was preceded in death by both parents and an older brother, Lloyd. Survivors include her husband, Chet, of Fort Worth; children Gary Allen Fassett and family of San Antonio, Texas; Linda Susan Zinck and family of Portland, Ore.; Laura Jean Sagar and family of Tampa, Fla.; Donald Edward Fassett and family of Bend, Ore.; an older sister, Betty Turgeon of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and sister-in-law Dorothy (Sexton) Gordon of Hot Springs.
Funeral services were held Aug. 7 in Greenwood Garden Chapel, Fort Worth, with burial at Greenwood Memorial Park. A memorial has been established to the American Lung Association.

Ruth A. Heier

Ruth A. Heier, 86, Hot Springs, SD, died Sunday, April 8, 2001 at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home, Hot Springs, SD.
Services were Thursday, April 12, 10:30 p.m. with Pastor Peter Free officiating. Ruth was laid to rest next to her husband at the State Home Cemetery, Hot Springs, SD.
Ruth lived and worked the majority of her life in the Mobridge area. She devoted herself to her family and enjoyed needle work, gardening, and crossword puzzles. She will be greatly missed and loved forever.
Ruth A. Heier was born September 19, 1914 in Hamburg, ND to Michael and Pauline (Friegen) Raugutt. On October 11, 1944 she married Ruben Heier and she continued a life with him while he was in the service until 1945. To this union they were blessed with two children.
Ruth is survived by one son, Lee (Lou) Heier, Mobridge, SD; one daughter, Diana (John) Pollock, Billings, MT, two brothers, Ted Raugutt, Mobridge, SD; Ray Raugutt, Casper, WY; two sisters, Hannah Pahl, Wright, WY; Erna Ackerman, Dickinson, ND, four grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband.
Arrangements were placed in the care of Rooks, Isburg, McColley's Chapel of Hot Springs, SD.

Garth Eugene Summers

CLINTON, Md. – Garth Eugene Summers,79, of Clinton, Maryland and formerly of Hot Springs, S.D., died January 29, 2002 in Clinton.
He was born on July 29, 1922, at Hot Springs, South Dakota. Garth was the second child born to his parents, Earl and Hazel Summers. He graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1940 and joined the Marine Corps the same year.
On December 7, 1941, he was stationed onboard the battleship, USS Maryland when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He spent three and a half years as an enlisted man, completed Flight School, received his commission and Naval Aviator's Wings on Jan. 16, 1944.
He married Floy Auble September 10, 1944, eventually attended college at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, S.D. He was called back to active duty for two years during the Korean War. He worked for York Corp., GSA, Texas Instruments and finally, NASA, retiring in 1981.
He is survived by his wife, Floy, daughter, Charlene Louise, granddaughter, Christina; brother, Harold Keith; sisters-in-law, Hazel and Marion; brother-in-law, Merle Johnson; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was proceeded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters and his son, Allan Randall.
Services were held February 6, 2002 at Corkran Memorial Church, Temple Hills, Maryland, with internment following at Cheltenham Veteran's Cemetery in Brandywine, Maryland.

Gerald Dean "Pee Wee" Dennis

CUSTER – "Pee Wee" Gerald Dean Dennis, 62, of Custer, died Tuesday, August 14, 2001 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He suffered a stroke on Saturday, August 11.
He was born September 25, 1938 at home on the family farm in Midland, S. D., one of eleven children. Pee Wee did a stint (1955-1959) in the U.S. Air Force, serving in North Africa.
He married Diane Dugan in 1961, and they had three children, Jani, Wayne and Craig. Music was always his life, and he played while working in South Dakota and Alaska. He formed the Mountain Music Show in Custer in 1978 and continued playing until his death. "And that's a period." "And another period."
Over the course of 40 years of music, tens of thousands of people have heard Pee Wee and his circle of friends bring them fun and enjoyment and that was exactly what Pee Wee had in mind when he started.
He attended the National School of Business in Rapid City and started J&J Bookkeeping Service in 1974 and continued until selling out to Ketel Thorstenson in 1996. he was employed by Ketel Thorstenson from 1996 to current. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, past city councilman of Custer, Custer Chamber of Commerce, past president of Custer Senior Center, treasurer of Mitchell Wood Fox Foundation Scholarship Fund and a member of the Catholic Church.
He raised funds for many organizations and donated his time and money selflessly. Especially close to his heart were the youth at the Custer Boot Camp. His spare time was taken by family, and he enjoyed camping with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Diane of Custer; daughter Jani and Bob Zweber of Hill City; son Wayne and Robin Dennis of Hendersonville, Tenn and Custer; daughter-in-law Cindy Dennis of Papillion, Neb.; five grandchildren Dugan and Amanda Dennis, Amie Isakson and Kelsi and Keisha Dennis; and one godson Jackson Dugan; and four brothers Lyle Dennis, Ivan "Snazz" Dennis, Howard "Butch" Dennis of Rapid City; and LeRoy Dennis of Ak; three sisters Olivia Perovich and Gloria "Sadie" Stickler of Rapid City; and Judy Holt of California; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by a son, Craig Dean Dennis, and three brothers Kenneth, Leonard and Ronald Dennis and his parents Henry Dennis and Hope Baker Dennis and father-in-law Donald Dugan and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Rosary service was held Friday at St. John's Catholic Church in Custer and Catholic Mass, Saturday, Aug. 18 at St. John's.
A Community Funeral Service and Celebration of Life was held at the Mountain Music Show Barn at Saturday with burial following at Custer Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in Pee Wee's name at the First Western Bank in Custer.
Arrangements were placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Custer.

Lyle E. Francis

Lyle E. Francis, 80, Hot Springs, SD died Sunday, April 8, 2001 at the VA Medical Center, Hot Springs, SD.
Visitation was Sunday, April 15 at Rooks, Isburg Chapel, Hot Springs, SD. Services were Monday, April 16 at Rooks, Isburg Chapel, with Reverend Gary Warren officiating. Burial was at the Martin Municipal Cemetery, Martin, SD.
Lyle E. Francis was born July 9, 1920 in Burr Oak, KS to Clard and Abbie (Marshall) Francis.
On September 5, 1943 Lyle married Lola Johnson at Martin, SD and to this union were five children.
Lyle farmed at Martin, SD for a period before moving to Hot Springs, SD in 1961 where he started a ready mix business. In 1973 he began a trucking career as a truck driver hauling a variety of materials. He continued trucking up until the time of his death at age 80.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Lola Francis, Hot Springs, SD; two sons, Clark Francis, Hot Springs, SD; John Francis, Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters, Carol Stutzman, San Marcus, CA; Lorna Walgren, Larkspur, CO; one sister, Jean Fritz, Bodega Bay, CA five grandchildren.
Lyle was preceded in death by one son, one sister and one grandson. A memorial has been established to the Hot Springs Ambulance Service, Hot Springs, SD.
Arrangements were placed in the care of Rooks, Isburg, McColley's Chapel of the Hills, Hot Springs, SD.
