Albert Hugh "Bud" Folger

Albert Hugh "Bud" Folger, 77 years of Homedale, ID. died Friday, March 20, 2001 at the Boise, ID. hospital. Funeral services were Monday, April 2, 2001 at St. Hubert's Catholic Church, Homedale, with Father Oscar Jaramillo officiating. Burial followed at Marsing-Homedale Cemetery.
Bud was born September 16, 1923 in Clear Lake, SD to Albert and Lena Folger. He moved to Oelrichs at age 4 from Watertown, SD. Bud attended country schools until moving to Hot Springs where he had to quit school in the 10th grade to help support his mother. Bud served in the US Army in WWII in the European Theater. He married Doris Maine in June of 1946 in Gering, NE. He worked in L.P. Gas Industry for 29 years before retiring in 1989. Bud loved working with wood and had a shop where he made bunk beds and refinished furniture. He loved and supported his children and loved being with his grandchildren. They moved to the Homedale area in 1966.
He is survived by his wife Doris of Homedale, three sons, Eugene of Nevada, Melvin of Texas and Douglas of Melba ID.; one daughter Vivian of Oregon; sister Evelyn from Oregon; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Synthia Joann (Drapeaux) Adair

Synthia Joann (Drapeaux) Adair, age 40, died at her home in Box Elder, SD on Friday, April 13, 2001 after a long battle with cancer.
Syndee was born Sept. 6, 1960 in San Diego, Calif. to Luckie and Frances Drapeaux. She was the third daughter to be born. She grew up in Lancaster, Calif. and moved with her family to South Dakota in 1974, where she attended Wagner Community School.
Her family then moved to Hot Springs, where she graduated in 1978 and married Rodney Merrill. They soon moved to Gillette, Wyo. To this union one son was born, Aaron Wayne Merrill. She worked for several different oil field companies while living in Gillette.
She then met and married Rusty Adair. They moved back to California, working for various companies in Lancaster and Redding, Calif. In 1992 she moved back to Hot Springs and worked for Bob Mines. Later she moved to Wagner, SD, working for the Fort Randall Casino and the Yankton Sioux Tribe.
The past few years she has lived in Box Elder and worked in Rapid City, until she was diagnosed with cancer last year.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents, her sister Rose Rouse and three grandbabies.
She is survived by her son Aaron Merrill (Sara Boyd) of Box Elder; her parents Luckie and Frances (Thomas) Drapeaux of Hot Springs; her sister Wendy Drapeaux of Hot Springs; her sister Terry (Malcolm) Ross of St. Petersburg, Fla.; special friends Joyce Moore and Lavonne Townsend of Rapid City; many nieces and nephews and very close friends and relatives.
Memorial services were Monday, April 16, at the First Church of God in Rapid City.
Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Harm H. Hanson

Harm H. Hanson, Hot Springs, 85, died Friday, April 13, 2001 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Harm Hanson was born February 3, 1916 at Ardmore, SD to Richard and Dena (Lucas) Hanson. He attended school at Ardmore and afterward he joined the CCC. He married Margaret Lorenz May 23, 1944 in Custer. He and Margaret were married 53 years at the time of her death in November of 1997.
Harm joined the US Army May 6, 1942. During his enlistment he participated in several European military campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. His service time was with honor by his being a recipient of Distinguished Unit Badge, American Theatre Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. On August 23, 1944 he was wounded in action in the European Theatre. He also served 40 months as a military policeman with 17 months of this time being served in England, France, Germany, and Luxembourg, and during this period of service he received 5 Battle Stars and the Purple Heart Medal. His duties as a military policeman consisted of guarding railways and trains delivering rations from the military bases to the front lines.
After the war he returned home and became a heavy equipment operator working in partnership with his brother, Melvin. He also was a heavy equipment operator for the Lorenz Brothers. In the early 1950's, he worked for the Soil Conservation leveling land for irrigation projects.
He later worked as a dealer for Canyon Oil Company and Frank Lelacheur at the Conoco Bulk Plant. He later completed his working career as the operator of the Boiler Room at the State Veterans Home in Hot Springs.
Grateful for having shared in Harm's life are his surviving two sons, Gerald Hanson, Hot Springs, and Ronald Hanson, Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Marilyn Schepler, Walla Walla, Wash.; one brother, Benjamin Hanson, Hot Springs; one sister, Ann Stinger, Hot Springs, eight grandsons, two granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter, several nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, parents, four brothers, Richard, William, George "Porky", Melvin, and one sister, Dora Conrath.
Visitation will be today, Tuesday, April 17 at Rook-Isburg Chapel, Hot Springs. Graveside services with full military rites will be Wednesday, April 18 at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, Hot Springs, with the Rev. Gary Warren officiating.
A Memorial has been established to the Alzheimers Unit at the Michael Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home, Hot Springs.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks, Isburg Chapel of the Hills, Hot Springs.

Eric E. "Whitey" Pedde, 73, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral: 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 20, at Zion Lutheran Church of Sioux Falls. Burial at Freeman City Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, at Miller Funeral Home in downtown Sioux Falls. Family will be present from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Melinda Mehlhaf

Melinda Mehlhaf, 77, of rural Freeman, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2002, at the Freeman Community Hospital.

The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 10 at Zion Reformed Church, Menno, with Rev. Hans Kalkman officiating. Pallbearers were Dale Mehlhaf, John Mehlhaf, Elmer Neuharth, Elner Streyle, Mark Schelske and Alton Mettler. Burial was in the Zion Reformed (Kassel) Cemetery, rural Menno.

Melinda was born Oct. 24, 1924 in Freeman, to William and Magdalena (Mettler) Mehlhaf. She lived on the farm all her life. She was a lifetime member of the Zion Reformed Church. She was baptized in 1924 by Rev. M.C. Buettell and confirmed May 28, 1939, by Rev. John Bodenman.

She is survived by one brother, Wilmer (Gladys) Mehlhaf, Freeman; three sisters: Alvina (Alton) Schelske, Parkston, Vernetta (Donald) Schulz, Parkston, and Marlene Mehlhaf, Freeman; a sister-in-law, Twyla Mehlhaf, Freeman; and nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Alvin and Leroy, and two sisters, Eldora and Iona.

Betty Heckenlaible

Betty Kathryn (Lobien) Heckenlaible was born Feb. 8, 1959 to Bernard and Mildred (Lundberg) Lobien. Betty grew up in Salem and was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Salem. She graduated from Salem High School and then graduated from USD of Springfield. Betty worked at SAE Warehouse in Sioux Falls as well as Grand Labs in Freeman. Her last employment was at Freeman Implement, where she worked for several years.

Betty married Stuart Heckenlaible April, 16, 1988, in Salem and moved to Freeman where she lived the remainder of her life. From this union a son, Taylor was born Dec. 12, 1994. Betty was a member of Bethany Mennonite Church in Freeman.

Betty died April 3, 2002 at her home after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Survivors include her husband, Stuart; their son, Taylor; sister-in-law Bonnie Heckenlaible, Sioux Falls; and father-in-law, Kermit Heckenlaible, Freeman; her brothers: Gerald, Bismarck, N.D., Clifford and wife, Wanda, Bonesteel, Donald and wife, Deb, Salem; and several nieces and nephews; special aunts: Esther Osterberg, Salem, and Myrtle Hand, Sarasota, Fla., and her uncle, Roy Lundberg, Vinton, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents.

The funeral was held Saturday, April 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Bethany Mennonite Church with Rev. Randall L. Tschetter officiating and Wanette Tschetter as pianist. Pallbearers were Keith Osterberg, Dean Osterberg, Norman Osterberg, Calvin Wiesner, Jim Zebell and Kelly Knodel. Interment was at Freeman City Cemetery.
