Tuesday, Sept. 18

Agnes Koerner, 82, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001 at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.

Funeral: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, at Riverview Park Reformed Church in Yankton. Burial at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton. Visitation is from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton with the family present from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Kathryn Schamber

Kathryn (Stahl) Schamber was born to John J. K. and Mary (Wipf) Stahl on Feb. 2, 1919 at their home southwest of Freeman during a pouring rain storm. She entered her heavenly home on May 2, 2002, at Avera Scared Heart Hospital at the age of 83.

Kathryn attended school at District No. 20. She finished eight grades of school in seven years. She then obtained her nursing degree and worked at the Dr. Ernest Hofer office for a number of years.

On Feb. 24, 1946, she married Max G. Schamber. They enjoyed 56 years of married life together. They were blessed with three children: Arlen, Sharleen and DeVandolyn. Kathryn and Max farmed west of Freeman. Kathryn enjoyed milking their dairy cows, mowing and putting up the hay the cows needed for feed. She always had a big garden and a big watermelon patch, which the high school students liked to raid at night. Kathryn and Max also raised sweet- corn which they shared with many Freeman people who enjoyed eating it.

After retiring, they managed to do some traveling around the country. One highlight was a trip to Florida. But mostly they traveled to see their grandchildren and enjoyed some of their school activities.

Kathryn taught Sunday school and Bible school for a number of years. She enjoyed singing in the choir and she sewed numerous quilts for the church.

After suffering a heart attack in 1994, she had heart by-pass surgery. She recovered, came home and enjoyed eight more years of life. During this time, she especially enjoyed her grandchildren.

On April 23, she entered Avera Sacred Heart Hospital for a pacemaker placement. After the placement, she suffered a number of small heart attacks. In the end, her Lord chose to take her home.

Kathryn is survived by her husband, Max; son, Arlen and wife, Mary; daughters: Sharleen Harnsich and husband, Lynn, and DeVandolyn Gibson and husband, Allen; seven grandchildren: Angel Gibson and fiance, Mark Hoover, Chester Gibson, Rachel Schamber and fiance, Ben Minerich, Gretchen Schamber, and Daniel, David and Matthew Harnisch. She is also survived by one brother, Sam Stahl and wife, Betty; sisters-in-law: Sarah Stahl, Adina Huber, Susan Schulz, Loretta Wilson and Ruth Schamber; one brother-in-law, Elmer Schamber and wife, Gladys; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers: Johnny, Eli, and infant brother David; her sisters: Susie and Mary Stahl, and Betty Gross; and brother-in-law Paul P. Gross.

The funeral was held Saturday, May 4 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. John Farden officiating and Maxine Farden as organist. Special music was provided by Daniel Harnisch and Lynn Schultz accompanied by Jane Kleinsasser. Pallbearers were Duane Stahl, Tom Stahl, Oren Stahl, Terry Gross, Arden Schamber and Dennis Dubs. Honorary pallbearers were Angel Gibson, Mark Hoover, Chester Gibson, Rachel Schamber, Ben Minerich, Gretchen Schamber, Daniel Harnisch, David Harnisch and Matthew Harnisch. Interment was at Freeman City Cemetery.

Orville G. Tiesen

The funeral for Orville G. Tiesen, 71, of Sidney, Mont., was held 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, at the Ebenezer Congregational Church in Sidney. Pastor Charles "Bob" Meehan officiated with burial in the Bethlehem Mennonite Cemetery, Bloomfield, Mont., under the direction of the Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.

Orville was born July 15, 1930 to parents Paul F. and Verna (Johnson) Tiesen, Freeman, where he grew up and attended schools. During World War II the family moved to Kinsey, Mont. They returned to Freeman where Orville graduated from high school. He entered into the U.S. Navy, during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he moved to California and worked for North American Aircraft, building airplanes. Orville returned to Montana, where he met and was united in marriage to Delphie Knels, at the South Valley Church, northeast of Bloomfield, Mont., on Aug. 15, 1954. In 1957, Orville opened Richland Upholstery, where he also repaired saddles, shoes and boots. Later he started to manufacture horse tack and sold industrial sewing machines. In 1989, due to ill health he retired and son Rick took over Richland-Yellowstone, which he still operates.

Orville was a member of the Ebenezer Congregational Church and the American Legion. He was a collector of model cars. His pride and joy was his 1930 Model A, which had belonged to his father. Orville enjoyed his grandchildren and had fun with "music time" and "family time". He enjoyed western novels, family history and cooking, as well as making his rounds throughout the plants visiting with all the employees.

Orville died Saturday, May 18, 2002 at the Mercy Hospital in Williston, N.D.

Orville is survived by his wife, Delphie Tiesen, Sidney; sons: Rick Tiesen, Sidney, and William B. (Sharon) Tiesen, Tullohome, Tenn.; daughters: Sandra Tiesen, Helena, Mont., and Bonnie (Randy) Broders, Freeman; mother, Verna Decker and step-father, Harry Decker, Durham, Kan.; sister-in-law, Margaret "Peggy" Tiesen; four grandchildren: Kori Tiesen, Baker, Mont., Brian Tiesen, Sidney, Kristy (Keith) Jensen, Freeman, and Tiffany (Troy) Hofer; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Tiesen and brother, Gary Tiesen.

ELLA SOPHIE EMMA BUCHMANN

Died 8/19/03

Ella Sophie Emma Buchmann was born on Oct. 22, 1909, in Clayton Township, Hutchinson County, to William and Maria (Mary) (nee Harnisch) Ahrendt.

Ella was baptized on Nov. 7, 1909, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Clayton, by Pastor Friederich Freese. Her sponsors were Karl Ahrendt and Sophie Harnisch. She was confirmed on June 24, 1923, also by Pastor Freese, at St. Peter's, Clayton, where she was a lifelong member. She taught Sunday school at St. Peter's, and was a member of the ladies aid, which she enjoyed very much.

Ella was married to Robert Buchmann on Nov. 24, 1938, at her parent's home by Pastor Henry Luebke of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Clayton. She passed away Aug. 19, 2003.

Ella is survived by one son, Robert Jr. and wife Dianna, Clayton; two daughters-in-law: Darlene Buchmann, Tripp, and Marilyn Long, Albion, Neb.; 13 grandchildren-Marlin and Darlene's children: David, Mary, Daniel, Darold, Marie, Duane and Marlys; Vernon and Marilyn's children: Richard, Michael, Mark and Stanley; and Robert and Dianna's children: Timothy and Christopher; numerous greatgrand-children; one brother, Albert Ahrendt and wife LaVerna, Parkston; two sisters: Ann Buehner, Parkston, and Alma Huber, Sheldon, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Knud Solberg, Freeman; two uncles: Arthur Ahrendt, Maple Lake, Minn., and Herman Harnisch, Sioux Falls; and one aunt, Johanna Bowman, Delano, Minn.

Ella was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Buchmann Sr.; one brother, William Ahrendt; four sisters: Mary Ahrendt, Emma Luebke, Esther Haar and Edna Solberg; one son, Vernon Buchmann; and one stepson, Marlin Buchmann.

The funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. at St .Peter's Lutheran Church of Clayton with John T. P. Werner officiating and Jon Huber as organist. Pallbearers were David Buchmann, Darold Buchmann, Duane Buchmann, Michael Buchmann, Mark Buchmann and Christopher Buchmann. Interment was at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery.

Claudia May Keck

Claudia May Keck, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002 at the Heart Hospital of South Dakota in Sioux Falls.

Funeral: 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, at the United Methodist Church of Winner, S.D. Interment at Winner Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner.

Eli J. Stahl

Saturday, Sept. 22

Eli J. Stahl, 75, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001 at the Freeman Community Hospital.

Funeral: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Hutterthal Mennonite Church of rural Freeman. Burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Walter Funeral Home in Freeman.

EMMA HOFER

Died 9/2/03

Our beloved mother, Emma Hofer was born April 20, 1915, to Peter G. and Marie (Kleinsasser) Hofer Sr. in Hutchinson County, a few miles southwest of Bridgewater on the farm homesteaded by her grandfather and occupied by her parents. Emma passed away on Sept. 2, 2003, while a patient at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. She reached the age of 88 years, four months and 13 days.

She received her elementary education in Hofer District 53, a one-room country school near the place of her birth, graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1933 and received a teaching certificate from Freeman Junior College in 1934. Emma taught for five years in country schools before her marriage.

Upon her confession of faith in Jesus Christ, she was baptized by immersion in the James River by the Rev. D. W. Tschetter and was received into the fellowship of the Salem MB Church on Aug. 21, 1932, where she remained a faithful member. Emma had a deep faith and a commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ. She continually reminded us of God's goodness and mercy and that he would take care of all our needs.

Emma was united in marriage to Melvin S. Hofer on Oct. 5, 1940, by the Rev. D. W. Tschetter at the Salem MB Church. They shared many joys together for nearly 62 years. This union was blessed with two daughters, Ruby and Donna. As a family they lived and farmed at the south edge of Bridgewater.

Emma was an active helpmate to her husband in their farming operation. Melvin and Emma enjoyed traveling during their retirement years, and they were privileged to visit all 50 states. Emma enjoyed her family, and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a gracious hostess and enjoyed sharing hospitality with family and friends. She served her church as a Sunday school teacher and was active in the Women's Missionary Society. Emma enjoyed music, especially singing. She sang in the church choir and other musical groups. Emma also sang 25 years in the Bridgewater Community Choir and with the Sweet Adelines for a number of years.

Following the death of her husband on July 31, 2002, Emma lived with her daughter, Ruby Lee Hofer in Dell Rapids. Even though there were many adjustments following Melvin's death, Emma commented often, "It's good we have each other and can be together". Emma enjoyed staying with Helen Ray and family during the school day. She was very appreciative of the loving care of family and friends, which she showed with her sweet disposition and smile. Emma entered the Terrace Manor Nursing Home on July 17, 2003.

Grateful for sharing her life are her two daughters: Ruby Lee Hofer of Dell Rapids, and Donna and husband James Glanzer, Madison; two grandsons: Michael and wife Jean Marie Glanzer, Great Falls, Mont.; and Mark and wife Christie Glanzer, Mt. Pleasant, Texas; two granddaughters: Michelle and husband John Simpson, Ham Lake, Minn., and Melissa and husband Eric Casler, Oakdale, Conn.; five great-grandsons: Samuel Glanzer, Benjamin Glanzer, Nicholas and Andrew Simpson, and Konrad Casler; six great-granddaughters: Anna and Sally Glanzer, Emily Glanzer, Annika Simpson and Katiana and Sophia Casler. Other survivors include a brother, Menno Hofer and wife Marcella, Bloomington, Minn.; a sisters, Mrs. Lydia (Walter) Pullman, Mitchell; sisters-in-law: Mrs. Ella (Dave M.) Hofer, Henderson, Neb., and Mrs. Mary (Mike P.) Hofer, Bridgewater, Mrs. Mary (Edgar) Hofer, Sioux Center, Iowa; special family and friends: Helen Ray, Iowa Jacobs, Linda Howard and Janie Lundberg, Dell Rapids; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Rev. Peter G. Hofer Jr., Paul P.M. Hofer, Mike P. Hofer, and David M. Hofer; sisters: Anna (Jacob D.) Wollman, Mary (Edgar) Hofer, Barbara (Emil) Tschetter; brothers-in-law: Jacob D. Wollman, Emil Tschetter, Edgar Hofer, Walter Pullman, Dr. E.J. Hofer, Joe D. Hofer, Clifford Hofer, Raymond Hofer, and Mike S. Wollmann; and sisters-in-law: Clara (Mike S.) Wollmann, Elsie (E.J.) Hofer, Sarah (Joe D.) Hofer, Anna (Clifford) Hofer, Liz (Paul P. M.) Hofer, and Pauline (Peter G.) Hofer.

The funeral was held on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Salem MB Church with Rev. Wilfred Fadenrecht and Rev. Frank Boerema officiating. Organist was Mary Ann Gross. Special music was provided by Mary Glanzer, Judy Glanzer and Karol Hofer with Chauni Glanzer as accompanist. Pallbearers were Charles Wollman, Dwight Pullman, Michael D. Hofer, Gerald Wollmann, Robin Hofer and Gary Stahl. Interment was at Salem MB Church Cemetery.

Ernet "Ernie" Glanzer, 89, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001 at his residence in Iroquois.

Funeral: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, at Iroquois United Methodist Church. Burial at Bethel Church Cemetery, rural Yale. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the Kuhler Funeral Home and prior to the service at the church on Thursday morning.

Claudia T. Traeger

Died 9/10/03

Claudia T. Traeger, 87, of Oshkosh, Wis., passed away at home on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003.

She was born on Sept. 23, 1915, in Freeman, to Conrad and Beata (Waltz) Ellwein. She married Carl Traeger in Freeman on March 1942, and he preceded her in death on April 26, 1979.

Claudia graduated from Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux Valley. She worked as a registered nurse in hospitals in Chicago, St. Louis, Colorado Springs and Madison, Wis. Claudia also did private duty nursing at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh and was a Red Cross blood bank volunteer.

Claudia was a long-time member of Bethany United Church of Christ where she was a Sunday school teacher, choir member and a member of the church Women's Guild. In later years she enjoyed playing bridge, reading and doing crossword puzzles.

Survivors include one daughter: Carolyn (Kevin) Percival of Naperville, Ill.; two granddaughters: Claudia (Brian) Shelton, Boilingbrook, Ill., and Carol Blanas, Naperville, Ill. Claudia was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister-in-law, Edith (Traeger) De Voe; one sister, Mrs. Walter Gering; and three brothers: Linton, Woodrow and Arthur Ellwein.

The funeral was held Monday, Sept. 15 at 3 p.m. at Bethany United Church of Christ with Rev. Kevin Mundell officiating. Interment was in the family plot at Riverside Cemetery.

EDWARD DECKERT

Edward Deckert was born near Marion on Jan. 26, 1910 to John W. Deckert and Katherine (Dirks) Deckert. He was born four and one half miles west of Marion. Dad received his elementary education in a nearby school house. He received Christ as Lord and Savior in 1925 and was baptized upon his confession of his faith in 1926 and joined the Bruderthalar Evangelical Brethren Church.

June 20, 1935, he was united in marriage to Delcie Unruh. On Oct. 8, 1939, he together with his wife, transferred their membership to the Silver Lake Mennonite Brethren Church. He sang in the choir, male quartets, and taught Sunday school a number of years. He enjoyed reading the Bible. One special verse that was dear to him was Ephesians 2:4: "God who is rich in mercy for His great love wherewith He loved us." Dad's special favorite song was "Rock of Ages".

Together Dad and Mother shared life's joys and sorrows for 55 years and four months. This union was blessed with one son, Donley Morris Deckert and two grandsons, Douglas and Bradford Scott, whom he loved and were a great concern to him.

Edward and Delcie spent most of their years farming five miles west of Marion. They retired from farming in the fall of 1974 and moved to Marion. This gave them a number of years of traveling which they enjoyed together.

On Valentines Day, February of 1990, Delcie took sick and had to be taken to the hospital for a gall bladder operation. On Oct. 29 that same year she had to go to the hospital again. On Oct. 25, 1990, she went to meet her Heavenly Father. In 1991 Dad moved to an apartment in Marion.

Remaining to mourn and commemorate his death are his son, Donley; two grandsons, Douglas and Bradford, all of Illinois; one brother, Maynard of Marion; one sister, Alvina and husband Edward Becker, Freeman; a sister-in-law, Esther (Clifford) Wentzel, Parker; 19 nephews and nieces and many relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death was his dear wife, Delcie; his parents; four sisters; two brothers; three nephews and one niece.

The funeral was held Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at Silver Lake Mennonite Church with Pastor James Koller officiating. Organist was Marlaree Windish with special music by Alice Schmidt. Pallbearers were Arlyn Thomas, Jerry Schmidt, Jaris Wentzel, Delano Tieszen, Arden Becker and Jim Deckert. Interment was at Schartner Cemetery.
