FERN KLEINSASSER KAUFMAN

Died 8/7/03

Fern Kleinsasser Kaufman was born on Aug. 17, 1939, to Joe K. and Julia Schrag Kleinsasser. She was the 10th child in a family of 11 children. She grew up on a farm northwest of Freeman and went to grade school at Apple Grove #49 and Freeman Public School. She graduated from Freeman Academy in 1957 and Freeman Junior College in 1959 where she received her associate arts and teaching degree.

Fern was baptized upon her confession of faith June 6, 1954, at the Hutterthal Mennonite Church. She was a member there until her marriage and then she became a member of the Salem Mennonite Church until the time of her death.

On June 28, 1960, she married Clyde Kaufman. This marriage of 43 years was blessed by four daughters: Sharla, JoLeen, Allison and Robin.

Fern enjoyed helping Clyde on their east Freeman farm and loved taking care of her family and grandchildren. She volunteered many hours in the church and on the Freeman Academy Auxiliary. For over 30 years she was the treasurer of the Mennonite Aid Society. For the last 11 years she worked at Fensel's Wholesale which was a job she enjoyed very much. Her hobbies were cooking, gardening and raising flowers.

In August of 2000 she was diagnosed with endometrium cancer. She underwent surgery and radiation treatments. In 2002 the cancer recurred and she endured over nine months of chemotherapy.

Mom fought her battle with courage and dignity. Even on her lowest days she was concerned more about others than herself. She hoped to live long enough to see her youngest daughter, Robin, get married this summer. God graciously answered that desire on July 19, 2003, and she was so grateful to be a part of that special day. On Aug. 7, 2003, 10 days before her 64th birthday, Mom was relieved of her pain and welcomed into her Heavenly home.

Left to mourn her departure is her beloved husband, Clyde; her four daughters: Sharla and husband James Unruh, Marion; JoLeen and husband Dana Cunnigham, Hays, Kan.; Allison and husband Jeff Russell, Garnett, Kan., and Robin and husband Wade Anderson, Merriam, Kan.; five grandchildren: Ashley, Lauren and Adam Unruh and Rachel and Aaron Cunningham; one brother, Amos Kleinsasser and Kathryn; six sisters: Adella Gross and Erwin, Mary Wollmann, Sarah Stahl, Bertha Hofer and Eldon, JoAnn Stahl and William, Ruby Hughes and Gary; one sister-in-law, LaVonne Schrag and Duane; and one brother-in-law, Johnny Graber; brother-in-law Delbert Kaufman and Dolores; and sisters-in-law: Doris Sherard and Jane Ries and Marvin; plus many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Iva and Katheryn; and brother Silas.

Her funeral was held Monday, Aug. 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the Salem Mennonite Church with Rev. S. Roy Kaufman officiating. Murray Ries was the organist and vocal music was provided by Kathy Kleinsasser, Linda Schrag and Sonja Waltner.
