OLGA EISENBEIS

Olga (Schrag) Eisenbeis, 97, was born June 3, 1904, to John M. And Maria (Graber) Schrag in Turner County, Marion.

She passed away May 27, 2002 at the Freeman Community Nursing Home.

Olga was baptized at the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church, rural Freeman, where she remained a member until her death.

She married Richard Eisenbeis, Nov. 22, 1927. He died Aug. 21, 1973. They farmed in Turner County until 1970 when they retired in Freeman. In August 1989, she moved to the Salem Mennonite Home forf the Aged in Freeman. She had been in the Freeman Community Nursing Home since December 2001.

Survivors include her daughter, LaNae and husband, LaVerne Waltner of Freeman; one sister, Linda Preheim, and one brother, Palmer Schrag, both of Freeman; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her son Lane; a grandson; her parents; and 11 siblings.

There will be a private funeral service June 7 at Walter's Funeral Home in Freeman with burial at the Salem-Zion Cemetery.

JEANETTE "JAN" WALLMAN

Died 8/8/03

Jeanette "Jan" Wallman, 56, of Huron, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.

The funeral was held Tuesday, Aug. 12 at the Bethesda Church in Huron with Rev. Tom Cartney and Rev. Elton Berg officiating. Pallbearers were Dan Unruh, Gary Doering, Greg Krech, Darrel Reuer, Vic Kleinsasser and Marc Kleinsasser. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Nathan Loewen, Jim Friesen, Sharlene Gross, Heather Brondsema, Winona Stahl, Janet Peck, Paula Kleinsasser, Melanie Thompson and Becky Wipf.

Burial was in the Bethel Mennonite Church Cemetery, rural Yale.

Jeanette "Jan" Walter was born on Sept. 24, 1946, in Huron to Marvin H. and Lillian (Wipf) Walter. She grew up on the family farm near Yale and attended country school. She graduated from James Valley Christian High School in 1964. Jan put her faith in the Lord and trusted him as her personal Savior at an early age. She was baptized and became a member of the Bethel Mennonite Church.

Jan attended Grace College of the Bible, and earned her bachelor's degree in education from Huron College. She earned her master's degree in administration from South Dakota State University. Jan taught in the Iroquois School District for 12 years. She was instrumental in establishing the James Valley Christian Elementary School and served as a teacher and principal there for 22 years. She was very dedicated to her job and was respected by the students and staff.

She married Willard Wallman on June 25, 1965, at Bethel Mennonite Church near Yale, where she was an active member and served on various committees. They made their home on a farm near Yale. She sang with the Eternal Echoes for 10 years.

Jan received the South Dakota Principal of Distinction Award in 1999. She was a finalist for the Spirit of Dakota Award in 2001. She also served on the South Dakota Christian School Association Board of Directors. Jan had a servant's heart and was an encouragement in the lives of others. She enjoyed family gatherings and was a gracious host and wonderful cook.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Willard Wallman, rural Huron; two sons: Jeremy and wife Kristy Wallman, Yale, and Rusty Wallman, Howell, Mich.; her mother, Lillian Walter, Huron; her sister, Nita Walter, Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers: Errol and wife Bonnie Walter, Huron, and Marty and wife, Karla Walter, Conway, Ark.; and brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and many relatives and friends.

Jan was preceded in death by her father, Marvin H. Walter; her grandparents, Paul J. and Rachel Walter, Zach B. and Anna Wipf, and Matilda Wipf.

Lillian Graves

Lillian Graves was born July 19, 1918 at Owatonna, Minn. Her parents were Adolf and Mary (Wacek) Buryska.

She married Frank Graves on Nov. 20, 1937 near Geneva, Minn. They farmed in Turner County near Freeman until retiring in 1973. They continued to live on the farm until Lillian moved to the nursing home in 1992. Frank passed away on March 19, 1993. Lillian enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting, quilting, playing cards, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Lillian passed away on April 13, 2002 at the Freeman Community Nursing Home in Freeman. She had attained the age of 83.

Lillian is survived by two daughters: Delores Roth of Hurley and Julie and husband, Jack Johansen, Farmington, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Frances and Martha Buryska, Owatonna, and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Stanley and Frank Buryska; two sisters, Bessie Graves and Sister Cajetan; and three nephews.

The funeral was held Tuesday, April 16 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bonifice-Idylwilde Catholic Church of Freeman with Father Gregg Frankman, Father Jim Buryska and Deacon Bill Frankman officiating. Organists were Lorraine Mammenga and Ronnie Schweitzer with special music by St. Boniface Choir. Pallbearers were Gordon Roth, Loren Roth, Jeremy Johansen, Tim Dismang, Ernie Popovich, Rick Domson and Michael Graves. Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Interment was at St. Boniface Cemetery.

ELSIE GOSSEN

Elsie Gossen, of the Langham Senior Citizens' Home, Langham, Saskatchewan, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at the age of 90.

In 1937, Elsie married Henry G. Gossen. They farmed in the Langham area for 30 years and operated Jasper Highway Service for 10 years.

She is survived by three sons: Maynard and Ann, Langham, Dennis and Phyllis, Waskesiu Lake, and Gerald and Linda, Langham; three daughters: Doreen and Ray Mierau, Long Creek, New Brunswick, Carol and Gerald Wurtz, rural Saskatoon, and Geraldine of Saskatoon; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grand-children; two brothers: Albert (Ella) Stahl, Edmonton, Alberta, and Harold Stahl, Langham; sister-in-law Hannah Stahl, Victoria, British Columbia; and many nieces and nephews.

Elsie was preceded in death by a baby daughter in 1943; her husband Henry in 1992; and her father and mother, Andrew and Barbara (Tschetter) Stahl.

The funeral was held Thursday, June 19 at 2 p.m. at the Zoar Mennonite Church, Langham, with Pastor Herman Wiebe officiating.

Interment took place at the Langham Cemetery.

LINDA HUBER

Linda Huber, 87, of Menno, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at the Menno-Olivet Care Center in Menno.

The funeral was held Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, Menno, with Rev. LeRoy Stadem officiating. Pallbearers were her grandsons: David Huber, Todd Orth, Kelly Bittner, Ryan Huber, Ty Huber and Nicholas Huber. Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughters; Glenda Walker, Karla Anderson, Rhonda Fredrick, Kim Niedringhaus, Penny Mattson, and Kristin Detert. Burial was in the Freeman City Cemetery.

Linda was born Nov. 20, 1915, at Menno to David and Katherina (Auch) Heckenliable. She was baptized and then later confirmed on June 29, 1930 at Ebenezer Reformed Church, rural Menno. She married Walter Huber February 6, 1938 in Menno and they then farmed together. She was widowed at the age of 34 and remained on the farm where she raised her family. In 1965 she and her youngest son moved to Menno where she worked at Ed's Food Market, was a waitress at Pfeifle Mobil Service Cafe, and Hutchinson County as Food Stamps Program Coordinator. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Menno.

Her memory is cherished by her sons: Harley (Deb), Clear Lake, Allen "Jack" (Karen) of Menno, Gary (Monica), Mitchell; daughters: Rita (Dwain) Orth, Scotland, and Ramona (Ken) Bittner, Menno; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister Elsie Lekness of Sioux Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother and three sisters.

ANNA S. PULLMAN

Anna S. Pullman was born in McCook County east of Bridgewater to Paul M. and Sarah Wollman Pullman on May 3, 1907 and passed away to her eternal home on March 29, 2002 at the age of 94 years, 10 months, and 26 days.

She attended country school through the eighth grade after which she stayed home and helped on the family farm. She farmed with her brother John and sister Susan until they retired. They spent their earlier retirement years living on the farm until Sept. 25, 1992 when Anna and her sister moved to the Salem Mennonite Home.

Anna lost her hearing in her mid- life years and got along with a hearing aid. She enjoyed reading the newspaper and her Bible as long as her eyesight permitted.

On March 26, 2001 Anna moved to the Freeman Community Nursing Home because of failing health and eyesight. Anna was a very caring and loving person especially to all of her nieces and nephews and showed a great interest in each of them.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bridgewater.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul M. and Sarah Wollman; her sisters: Marie and husband John A. Hofer, and Mrs. Elizabeth Erickson; her brother, John W. Pullman; an infant sister Katie; an infant brother Joseph; and brother-in-law Eldo Lackman.

Her memory will be cherished by her sisters: Susan Pullman of Salem Home for the Aged in Freeman; and Edna Lackman, Elma, Wash.; brother-in-law, Martin Erickson of Salem; a cousin, John D. Hofer, Long Beach, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral was held Monday, April 1 at 1:30 p.m. at Walter Funeral Home in Freeman with Rev. Dudley Horning officiating. Karol Hofer was pianist with Devona Wiskur and Harold Hofer as soloists. Phyllis Hofer was accompanist. Pallbearers were Bill C. Wiskur, Korey J. Hofer, Doug Gilbert, Calvin Hofer, Harold Hofer and Steven Hofer. Interment was at Bridgewater City Cemetery.

Winifred Jane Dewald

Winifred Jane Dewald was born Feb. 8, 1932, at home in Freeman the daughter of William E. and Mary (Kleinsasser) Tschetter. She was raised and attended school in Freeman, where she graduated from high school in 1951. On June 6, 1954, Winifred was united in marriage to Robert Schmidt at Freeman. They lived at Goodrich, N.D., for a time, then moved to Carrington, N.D. Robert died in August of 1988.

On Oct., 21, 1995, Winifred was united in marriage to Harry Dewald at Carrington. They moved to Jamestown, N.D., in 1999. Harry Dewald died Oct. 18, 2001. Winifred entered Golden Acres Manor in Carrington in May of 2002.

She loved children and operated a home daycare for many years. She had also worked at Golden Acres Manor in Carrington.

Winifred died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at Golden Acres Manor in Carrrington, at the age of 71.

She is survived by one son, Kelly Schmidt, Carrington; one daughter, Karla (George) Nelson, Chattanooga, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Leo (Blanche) Tschetter, Arlington; her stepchildren: Ivan (Sabrina) Dewald, Columbia, Mo., Harlan (Brenda) Dewald, Jamestown, Herbert (Bonnita) Dewald, Spiritwood, N.D., and Holly (Mike) Dockter, Carrington.

Winifred was preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents; an infant son, Kevin; a daughter-in-law, Lori Schmidt; and a sister, Anna.

SUSAN S. PULLMAN

Susan S. Pullman was born in McCook County to Paul M. and Sarah (Wollman) Pullman on Nov. 27, 1908, and passed away to her eternal home on Sept. 16, 2002, at the age of 93 years, nine months and 20 days.

She attended country school through the eighth grade after which she stayed home and helped on the family farm.

Upon her confession of faith, she was baptized and became a member of the Zion Mennonite Church. At a later time she transferred her membership to the First Presbyterian Church of Bridgewater.

After her parents passed away, she farmed with her brother John and sister Anna, until they retired. She spent her earlier retirement years living on the farm until Sept. 25, 1992, when Susan and her sister moved to the Salem Mennonite Home in Freeman.

Susan enjoyed her time living at the Salem Home. Reading the newspaper and keeping in touch with current events and family news was important to her. She could also be found reading her Bible and the Our Daily Bread devotional. In the last few months her hearing was impaired and also her failing eyesight made reading very difficult.

On July 3, Susan was admitted to the Freeman Community Hospital. After her hospitalization she moved into the Freeman Community Nursing Home where she lived at the time of her death.

Susan was a very caring and loving person especially to all of her nieces and nephews.

Her memory will be cherished by her sister, Edna Lackman, Elma, Wash.; brother-in-law, Martin Erickson, Salem; a close cousin John D. Hofer, Long Beach, Calif.; and her nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul M. and Sarah (Wollman) Pullman; her sisters: Marie and husband John A. Hofer, Mrs. Elizabeth Erickson, and Anna Pullman; her brother John W. Pullman; her infant sister and infant brother; brother-in-law Eldo Lackman; nephews: Loyal Erickson and Harris Hofer; and a niece Irene Marie Hofer.

LUELLA J. HOFER

Luella J. Gossen was born on March 28, 1917, to Anna (Duerksen) and John J. Goosen, Jr. on a farm southwest of Marion, and passed away on April 7, 2003. Luella attended elementary school in Dolton. Later she worked in Sioux Falls and then as a clerk at Anderson's Store in Dolton. It was here that she met Walter J. Hofer. They were married on March 12, 1944, at the Bethesda Mennonite Church, Marion, by Rev. D. S. Wipf. Two daughters, Maureen and Jonetta, shared their lives with them.

In 1954, Luella and Walter moved to their farm where they resided until January of 1996 at which time they moved to Freeman. In June of 1996, they moved to the Freeman Nursing Home. Luella farmed alongside Walter and together they operated Hofer's Hatchery. She raised geese and ducks and had a large garden. She enjoyed sewing and embroidery.

Luella was a member of the Hutterthal Mennonite Church of rural Freeman. She served in the Junior Sunday School Department as a teacher and superintendent, in the Women in Mission and on the education wing building committee.

Awaiting reunion with her are her daughters: Maureen Friesen and husband Marlyn, Freeman; Jonetta Hofer, Sioux Falls; grandchildren: Michelle Friesen and husband Michael Miller, Freeman, Melanie and a husband Ryan Thompson, Cavour, Merril Friesen, Milford, Neb., Brandon Barta, Sioux Falls, Tracy Barta, Brookings; and great-grandson, Derek Thompson, Cavour; her brothers: Edwin J. Gossen and wife Marilyn, Walla Walla, Wash., Harry J. Gossen and wife Elma, Parker; and sister Darleen Ortman and husband Vernon, Sioux Falls; and nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Friday, April 11 at 2 p.m. at Hutterthal Mennonite Church with Pastors Ivan and Rachel Friesen officiating. Organist was Norma Hofer with Kathryn Kleinsasser as vocalist accompanied by Shirley Hofer. Pallbearers were Jerauld Glanzer, Raymond Gossen, Clarence Schmidt, Charles Duerksen, Dewayne Klunder and Ben Engbrecht. Interment was at Hutterthal Mennonite Church Cemetery.

MYRON C. KAUFMAN

Myron C. Kaufman was born on March 9, 1926 in Turner County, to Paul and Amelia (Schrag) Kaufman. He attended country school near Turkey Ridge and graduated from Freeman High School in 1944. In September of 1950, Myron was baptized upon his confession of faith and became a member of the Salem Mennonite (South) Church near Freeman.

On Aug. 22, 1950, he was united in marriage to Darlene Tieszen at Marion. They made their home just west of Marion. He thoroughly enjoyed the occupation of farming, but his greatest joy was his family spending many hours with his grandsons and was always concerned for their well-being. In the earlier years company would come over and everyone joined in for an afternoon on Sundays of singing and playing.

Myron passed away Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Darlene; two sons: Jerry and Mark; grandchildren: Casey, Christopher and Justin; a sister, MarJean Waltner and husband Russel, Yankton; a brother-in-law, Dennis Miller, Chancellor; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jeanne Miller.

The funeral was held Friday, Sept. 20 at 1:30 p.m. at Bethesda Mennonite Church of rural Marion with Pastor James Koller officiating. Mary Tieszen was organist with special music by Alice Schmidt. Pallbearers were Casey Kaufman, Christopher Kaufman, Justin Kaufman, Delmar Kaufman, Kermit Schrag and Desmond Miller. Interment was at Tieszen Cemetery of rural Marion.

DUANE "DEWEY" BARTLING

Duane E. "Dewey" Bartling, 78, of Menno, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2003, at the Freeman Community Nursing Home in Freeman. The funeral was held Tuesday, May 6, at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, Menno, with Rev. LeRoy Stadem officiating. Burial was in the Menno Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Rames-Bender American Legion Post #152. Pallbearers were Tim Anderson, Cade Anderson, Gary Mielke, Don Mielke, Wayne Nelson, Alvin Weber, Fred Schoppert, and Galen Guthmiller. Honorary pallbearers were Roland Preszler, E.W. Hertz, Vern Mammenga, Bob Rennolet, Archie Klaudt, Don Schnabel, Rita Hoff, Jerome Hoff, Randy Quast, Earl Keller, and Rev. Dave Murray.

Duane E. "Dewey" Bartling was born on March 29, 1925, in Hutchinson County on a farm near Clayton, to Leonard and Alice (Roth) Bartling. His family moved to Menno in 1935. At the age of 18 he entered the US Navy and was engaged in the battle of Leyte Gulf, Philippine Islands. He was awarded four Battle Stars, a special accommodation at a Captain Meritorious Mast for excellent performance of duty against an overwhelming Japanese surface force and subsequent air attack. He was awarded the President Unit Citation and was discharged at the age of 21.

Upon his return home, he married Norma H. Mettler on May 19, 1946, in Menno. They had two children. He worked at the Menno Lumber Company doing piecework. Later he owned and operated Dewey's Mobile Service and Cafe. At this time he married Olga Nusz Handel on Nov. 27, 1963, in Menno. During this time he worked as a Standard Oil Agent, Northrup King Seed Corn Dealer and Menno bus driver.

Due to health reasons at the age of 50, he was forced to take an early retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and all kinds of birds, animals, and flowers. His enjoyment was all forms of nature. He especially loved to watch the Martins return in the spring to the many birdhouses that he built for them, and watching his many flowers begin to bloom and grow that he planted every year. In the fall he turned his thoughts and work into lighting up his yard for his Christmas display.

He was a member of the Menno Fire Dept., the Rames-Bender American Legion #152, and the Grace Lutheran Church of Menno.

He is survived by one daughter, Cheryl (Bruce) Anderson, Menno; one son, Craig, Pierre; one sister, Vernet Mielke, Menno; two grandsons: Tim Anderson of Lake Andes, and Cade (Kimberly) Anderson of Omaha, Neb.; and one great-grand-daughter, Madelyn Hannah Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Olga, and brother-in-law, Lester Mielke.

MERLIN M. SCHOCK

The funeral for Merlin Schock was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, in Sun Prairie Baptist Church, rural Salem. Rev. Mark Dickson officiated at the service. Organists were Aldena Ecklein and Priscilla Hansen. Becky Wahle played a trumpet solo at the graveside. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were, Roger Bunger, Richard Kunkel, Steve Larson, Dale Klingberg, Norman Peterson, and Howard Heidelberger.

Merlin Merle Schock was born Feb. 4, 1952, to Gideon & Irene Schock at St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen. On Aug. 30, 2002, he went to be with the Lord at the age of 50. He lived in various communities as he was growing up. In 1970 he graduated from Marion High School, and in 1972 moved to the Spencer area where he farmed. On Aug. 18, 1973, he married Collette Preheim at Freeman. To this union three children were born, Mike, Brad, and Jenni. They were Merlin's greatest pride and joy. He had a deep love for his wife and children. He spent time with them and made a great effort to talk with his children and encourage them in life. He farmed his entire life and especially enjoyed his herd of dairy cows. Many important conversations with his family were held out in the barn during milking. Merlin was an active community member, serving on the Spencer/McCook Central school board for 15 years. Education was a very important part of his life, as he valued not only his children, but all children. He had a great sense of humor, having the rare gift of making you laugh. He could make an everyday occurrence into a funny story.

His faith in God was strong throughout his life. This was evident as he showed great courage in his battle with cancer. He worked with the youth group and served on church board for many years at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer. In later years he enjoyed the comforting words and music of Sun Prairie Baptist Church where he attended faithfully until his death.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Collette; children: Mike and wife Joann, Brad, and Jenni, all of Spencer; his parents: Gideon and Irene Schock; brother and sister-in-law Larry and Judy Schock of Salem; mother-in-law Selma Preheim of Freeman; brothers and sisters-in-law: Delmer and Shirley Hofer of Freeman, Curt and Pat Olson of Sioux Falls, and Randy and Brenda Preheim of Conroe, Texas; ten nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
