She was raised on the farm along with three brothers, and one sister: Harm, Eppo, Hilray and Lydia. She grew up on the farm and eventually met a young man by the name of Fred DeBelts. They fell in love and were united in marriage on Oct. 8, 1940. The wedding took place at Chancellor Baptist Church. Fred and Irene started their married life on a rented farm near Hurley. In later years they farmed near Davis, this is where they started a dairy business. They milked as many as 65 cows at times. Irene was always ready to help in the field or barn. She loved to cook and bake and was always worried about people getting enough to eat. She always had a big garden and did a lot of canning. She also raised chickens, and then butchered them. Of course, all of her daughters remember this very well because they got to help!

In 1975, Fred and Irene retired and moved to Lennox. What a change! No more cows to milk, but she still kept a large garden. Later they moved onto an acreage near Dolton and then to Freeman.

After the death of her husband, Fred, Irene suffered two strokes, the latter of which left her paralyzed on the left side. She was very fortunate to have been able to stay in her own home with the help of her granddaughter and caregivers, Carol Reif, Melisa Weinbury, Jeanne Wickerson, Jesse Mohr, Kim Palmer, and Sharleiy Hairston and past caregivers, Diane Fry, Melissa Hofer, Dustin Egan and others too numerous to mention.

Irene handled her handicapped situation well, but always mentioned "If only she could walk and stand by the sink and peel potatoes."

As a young girl, Irene accepted Jesus into her heart as her Lord and Savior from sin and was baptized by immersion as a testimony of her new life in Christ.

Irene went home to be with her blessed Lord and Savior early Friday morning, Feb. 28 in her home. We are all sad to see her go but know that in heaven she is walking again, peeling potatoes, and singing at the top of her lungs.
