NATALIE PEITZ

Natalie T. Peitz, 91, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2002 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton.

The funeral was held Monday, June 3, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton. with Rev. John Fischer officiating. Pallbearers were Art Peitz, Dennis Peitz, Lawrence (Buddy) Peitz, Cletus Wiesler, Larry Hoebelheinrich and Dennis Hoebelheinrich. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Natalie was born Sept. 4, 1910 to Henry and Ida (Beckman) Klug in Wynot, Neb. She married Ferdinand R. Peitz on Sept. 25, 1940 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Menominee, Neb. She was a reflexologist of 49 years and a dedicated homemaker. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, Catholic Daughters and the VFW Auxiliary.

Natalie is survived by one son, Robert and Linda (Casey) Peitz of Yankton; one daughter, Darlene (Peitz) and John Hillenbrand of Modesto, Calif., and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ferdinand; and four brothers: Vincent, Lee, George and Ralph.

LENORE J. NIELSEN

Lenore J. Nielsen, 69, of Freeman and formerly of Yankton, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2003, at the Freeman Community Nursing Home, Freeman. The funeral was held Wednesday, July 9, at 10:30 a.m., at the Kostel Funeral Chapel in Yankton, with Rev. Dudley Horning officiating. Pallbearers were Duane Falconer, Jason Elcock, Eric Elcock, Steve Rokar, Mike Wirth and Chris Rokar. Burial was in the Carlson Cemetery, rural Viborg.

Lenore was born Dec. 29, 1933, at rural Viborg, to Caleb and Anna (Nelson) Lund. She graduated from Viborg High School in 1952.

She married Norman O. Nielsen on May 21, 1953. Together they farmed and in 1983 moved to Yankton after selling the farm. They moved to McAllen, Texas, in 1994 and returned to Yankton in 1997 because of Lenore's health. She entered the Freeman Community Nursing Home in 2002.

Lenore loved cats, going to rummage sales, and listening to music. She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, Yankton.

She is survived by her husband Norman of Freeman; one daughter, Lynne (Morris) Elcock of Freeman; two sons: Scott (Helen) Nielsen of McAllen, Texas, and Chris Nielsen of Harlingen, Texas; three sisters: Edith Hanson of Irene, Verda Taylor of Salem, Ore., and Dorothy Flyger of Sioux Fall; six grandchildren: Jason (Tonya) Elcock, Eric Elcock, Katrina Elcock, Aubrey Nielsen, Chris Nielsen, and Thomas Nielsen; and two great-grandchildren: Austin and Kelly Elcock.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and three brothers.

EVERT D. CAYLOR

Evert D. Caylor, 76, of Olivet, passed away Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Sioux Falls. The funeral was held Thursday, Nov. 14, at 1:30 p.m. at the Olivet United Methodist Church, Olivet, with Rev. John Katter officiating. Burial was in the Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, with military graveside rites by the Rames-Bender American Legion Post #152. Pallbearers were Jason, Eric, and Tony Caylor, Deano Miller, Michael Wagner, and Maynard Schultz.

Evert was born April 29, 1926, to Frank and Rehart (Uhrich) Caylor in Parkston. He was baptized at the Parkston Lutheran Church, Parkston. He attended Milltown grade school and three years at Olivet High School. He spent his senior year at Armour High School graduating in 1944. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1944. He was an Aerial Gunner on B-29 and B-17s during World War II from 1944 until his honorable discharge in 1946.

He married Marian Boegler on June 3, 1947, at the Olivet United Methodist Church in Olivet. To this union two sons were born: Rick of Freeman and Perry of Olivet. In 1947 he farmed and sheared sheep with his father, Frank, and then moved to a farm northwest of Olivet where they lived from 1948 to 1969. In 1969 Evert and his wife worked as dorm parents at USD, Springfield, until 1984. After working in Springfield Evert ran the Frostie Shop in Scotland. Evert suffered a stroke shortly after retirement in 1990. He resided at the family farm northwest of Olivet until his passing.

Evert will always be remembered for his enjoyment of visiting with people and hunting, both locally and in the Black Hills. He was a member of the Rames-Bender American Legion Post #152 of Menno.

He is survived by his wife Marian, Olivet; his mother, Rehart Caylor, Mitchell; two sons: Rick of Freeman and Perry of Olivet; two brothers: Kenneth of Mitchell and Howard of Ethan; and one sister, Beverly Foster, Ridgeway, S.C.

He was preceded in death by his father; one brother Dale; and one sister Doris.

HERBERT A. HAAR

Herbert A. Haar, 85, of Lincoln, Neb., died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002. He was born to Theodore and Adella (Schamber) Haar in Freeman on Oct. 3, 1917. Herbert was formerly self-employed and by the city of Lincoln. He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran and Christ Lutheran churches and was also involved in prison fellowship.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Haar; his children and spouses: David and Katherine, Kenneth and Christine, Margaret and Jim and Carolyn and Lois; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; stepchildren: Mike and Mary Barker, Deborah and Chris Molitor and Sheri and Bob Hill; seven stepgrandchildren; and a brother, Martin.

He was preceded in death by his wife Paula; three brothers; and one sister. The funeral was held Thursday, Nov. 14 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Harold Stelzer officiating. Burial was at Lincoln Memorial Park.

LARRY W. AUCH

Larry W. Auch, 57, of Yankton, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at the Freeman Community Hospital, Freeman. The funeral was held Saturday, June 14, at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Yankton, with Rev. Dayne Zachrison officiating. Pallbearers were Chad Hofer, Wendy Hofer, Michael Preheim, Jeffery Preheim, Jim Hofer and Rick Preheim. Honorary pallbearers were Kayl Auch, Bryson Auch, Josh Griffen and Jeremy Griffen. Burial was in the Menno Cemetery.

Larry was born in Yankton on Aug. 9, 1945, to Walter and Hulda (Oswald) Auch of Menno. He was baptized in Johannesthal Reformed Church north of Menno on Oct. 7, 1945, and confirmed on June 12, 1960, in Salem Reformed Church in Menno.

He graduated from Menno High School in 1963 and continued his education at Springfield College, Springfield. After college Larry was employed at Smidt Appliance and Furniture in Menno, the Human Services Center and Dale Electronics Inc. in Yankton. Larry was a member of the Lions Club, and Jaycees, associate member of the Peace Officers Association and board member of the First United Methodist Church.

Larry married Patricia Dowling on Feb. 20, 1971, at the United Methodist Church, Randolph, Neb.

Larry is survived by two children: Kelley (Dawn) Auch of Kansas City, Mo., and Kristopher (Melinda) Auch of Fremont, Neb.; two grandchildren: Bryson Auch and Kayl Auch; step-grandchildren: Joshua and Jeremy Griffen of Freemont; his mother, Hulda Auch, Menno; and sisters: Mrs. Pamela (James L.) Hofer and Mrs. Peggy (Rick) Preheim, both of Freeman.

He was preceded in death by his father Walter Auch.

HARLEY L. CHRISTENSEN

Harley L. Christensen was born Sept. 16, 1932, in rural Freeman. His parents were Axel P. and Christine (Nelson) Christensen.

He married Avis Benson on June 1, 1952, at the First Baptist Church in Viborg. He entered the U.S. Navy on Sept. 3, 1952, and was discharged in September of 1956. He served on the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge for two and one-half years in the Pacific and was commended for bravery during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, Harley and Avis made their home in the Yankton and Viborg areas. In 1961, he became employed by Northrup King Seed Co. out of Minneapolis and they lived in Nebraska. They moved to South Dakota in 1966 where Harley was a territory manager and was transferred to the Southeastern South Dakota Division. He retired in 1983 after 22 years of employment. He had earned the honor of becoming Salesman of the Year of the Midwest Division in 1967 and 1974 as well as of the entire United States in 1967. Harley and Avis have lived in Viborg since 1976. He had served on the Viborg City Council and as mayor for a period of time. Harley enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, coffee at the cafe, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and good friend Roger Long.

Harley passed away Nov. 3, 2002, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Viborg at the age of 70.

Thankful for having him in their lives are his wife, Avis, Viborg; three sons: Craig, St. Paul, Minn., Russ and Carol, Viborg, and Rob and Lori, Sioux Falls; one daughter, Marci and Steve Stanage, Corona, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; two sisters: Margie Weidmeier of Yankton and Darline Weidmeier, Menno; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Virgil.

The funeral was held Thursday, Nov. 7 at 1:30 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church of Viborg with Pastor Mindy Erhke officiating and Karen Freier as organist. Pallbearers were Craig Christensen, Russ Christensen, Rob Christensen, Steve Stanage, Rusty Christensen, Kalvin Christensen, Kent Christensen, Justin Christensen and Ryan Stanage. Interment was at the Hurley Cemetery.

VIELLA MANGOLD

Viella Mae "Vi" Mangold nee: Koerner, 63, of St. Paul Park, Minn., died on June 9, 2003, after a courageous battle with cancer. Her funeral was held Wednesday, June 18 at 10:30 a.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church. Interment was at Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Vi was born April 26, 1940, in Bridgewater, the daughter of Gideon and Anna (Schnabel) Koerner. She grew up on a farm near Freeman.

Vi graduated from SDSU in Brookings with a degree in home economics.

On June 16, 1962, she and Fred Mangold were married in Menno. They lived in Northfield and Albert Lea, Minn., prior to moving to St. Paul Park in 1967. Vi worked in customer service for Norwest/Wells Fargo Bank.

She was an active member of the All Saints Lutheran Church and sang in the choir. She was involved in Girl Scouts, and taught crocheting for many years. Vi enjoyed traveling with her church group, camping, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children: Laura (Mark) Anderson and Alan, all of St. Paul Park and Donald of South St. Paul, Minn.; grandchildren: Aaron, Caleb and Rebekah Anderson; two sisters; Delores (Keith) Sorensen, Newport News, Va., and Eileen (Roger) Gallimore, Rapid City; stepmother, Lorine Koerner, Freeman; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fred; parents Gideon and Anna Koerner; and sister Patricia.

ROBERT HICKEY

Robert Hickey, 59, of rural Freeman, died Monday Nov. 4 as the result of a traffic accident near Freeman.

Robert was born Aug. 27, 1943, in Kansas City, Mo. He grew up in Kansas City where he received his education. He attended Corinth Elementary School in Prairie Village, Kan., Indian Hills Jr. High School and Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village. Robert was very active in the Boy Scouts, having earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended the University of Florida at Gainsville, Fla.

Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 4th Division Infantry while serving in Vietnam. Just prior to going to Vietnam he met Nancy Jo Moyer. The couple were married on May 15, 1965, in Chicago, Ill. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, he began work for Allstate Insurance. Robert worked for many years, mainly in the insurance business. He was a successful salesman and was semi-retired, working for Colonial Life Insurance Co. at the time of his death.

The couple moved to South Dakota four years ago to be near their grandchildren. He bought a farm near Freeman, where he raised cattle and goats.

Robert was raised in the Cherokee Christian Church in Prairie Village. In later years he has held several memberships in Evangelical Covenant churches.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Nancy, rural Freeman; two sons: David Hickey, Prairie Village, and Rev. Steven Hickey, Sioux Falls; his mother, Gladys Hickey, Marion, formerly of Kansas City; and six grandchildren: Kyle, Natalie, Jessica, Caleb, Thomas and Kaitlyn.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Joseph Hickey in January of 1976.

The funeral was held Thursday, Nov. 7 at Harvest Church in Sioux Falls at 7 p.m. Interment was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Kansas City.

IDA SCHNEIDER

Ida V Schneider, 82, of 1830 Idaho SE, Huron, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at her home. The funeral was held Monday, July 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethesda Church with Rev. Randy Crook officiating. Her eight grandchildren were pallbearers. Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Ida Viola Neuharth was born Aug. 27, 1920, at Menno, to Phillip and Katharina (Mehlhaf) Neuharth. She was baptized in infancy and she was confirmed by Rev. Huenemann on June 9, 1935, at the Zion Reformed Church in Menno. Ida married Victor Schneider on Sept. 24, 1944 at Menno. They farmed most of their married life, living most of those years in the Alpena-Huron area until they retired and moved to Huron in 1996.

Ida was a member of the Bethesda Church. Her church work included teaching Sunday school, Bible school, serving as church librarian and being involved in the Women's Missionary Society. She enjoyed homemaking, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sewing, making quilts, traveling with Vic, participating in the area Artistic Needle Workers Club (later known as All Neighborly Women's Club), and flower and vegetable gardening. She also served on the Grant Township election board for several years.

She is survived by her husband, Victor, Huron; two sons: Lynn and wife Gloria, Huron, and Rick and wife Angie, Sioux City, Iowa; one daughter, Ardyce and husband James Hill, Evanston, Wyo.; eight grandchildren: Brent and wife Vicky Schneider, Dr. Jon and wife Ann Schneider, Aaron Schneider, Robert and wife Nannette Hill, Michelle and husband Nathan Kiser, Eric Hill, Nicholas Schneider, Christie Schneider; four great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Cori Hill, Jacob Schneider and Dalton Kiser; two brothers: Elmer and wife Alice Neuharth and Philip Jr. and wife Virginia Neuharth, Menno; five sisters: Alma and husband Alton Nieman, Yankton, Verlinda Huber, Albany Ore., Erna and husband LaVerne Decker, Hartford, Viona and husband Luverne Buehner, Canistota, and Arlene Walz, Menno; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and three sisters.

NANCY A. LIEBL

Nancy A. Liebl, 49, of Yankton, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Neb.

The funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Yankton, with Rev. David Gunderson officiating. Burial was in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton.

Memorials have been established to St. John's Lutheran Church, Lied Transplant Center and the American Cancer Society.

Pallbearers were Andrew Elbert, Keith Engel, Jon Liebl, Mark Liebl, Jason Pfeiffer and Justin Pfeiffer.

Nancy Ann was born Dec. 30, 1952, at Freeman to Edwin and Esther (Koerner) Pfeiffer. On Jan. 25, 1953, she was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Freeman, and on April 9, 1967, she was confirmed there. She grew up and attended school at Freeman, graduating from Freeman High School. She attended Sioux Falls School of Nursing.

On June 30, 1973, she married Daniel Liebl at Freeman. Nancy was a licensed practical nurse for 29 years and worked at the Yankton Medical Clinic. She was currently a pre-need counselor at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home.

Survivors include her husband, Dan of Yankton; daughters: Melissa Liebl of Centerville and Sarah Liebl of Yankton; son, Ryan Liebl of Yankton; sisters and brothers-in-law: Marilyn and Duane Engel of Freeman, and Patricia and Larry Kleinschmit of St. Helena, Neb.; brothers and sister-in-law: Roy Pfeiffer and Wayne and Mary Pfeiffer all of Freeman; and many nieces and nephews.

Her parents preceded her in death.

RANDOLPH VERNON PENNER

Randy Penner, 81, Freeman, formerly of Hudson, Wis., died Dec. 24, 2002, at Freeman Community Nursing Home.

Randy was born on Feb. 27, 1921, near Hillsboro, Kan., to Albert H. and Elizabeth (Riesen) Penner.

On Dec. 29, 1946 he married Luella Tieszen. They lived in Newton, Kan., Hudson, Wis., and moved to Freeman in 1999.

He served in CPS camps in La Pine, Ore., and Bowie, Md., from 1942 to 1945.

He attended Wichita (Kan.) University and Bethel College, N. Newton Kan., obtaining a BFA degree. He worked as an illustrator for printing, calendar and aviation companies. He was a commercial artist, and then worked entirely in fine art specializing in watercolors.

He was a member of the Midwest Watercolor Society and American Society of Aviation Artists. His paintings hang in private and corporate collections across the nation. He wrote and illustrated a book, A Harvest of Memories, depicting his young years on a Kansas farm.

He is survived by his wife, and other relatives and friends.

The funeral will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9 at Salem Mennonite Church, rural Freeman.

Rev. S. Roy Kaufman, pastor of Salem Mennonite Church and Rev. R. Alan James, Stillwater, Minn., will officiate the service. Organist will be Ruby Waltner with vocal music by Jerry Graber, Lyle Preheim, Duane Kaufman and Stuart Preheim singing "Amazing Grace" and "It is Well With my Soul".

Private committal of the cremains in Rose Hill Cemetery, rural Dolton, will be held prior to services.

Undesignated memorials will be directed to the H. D. Penner Scholarship Fund, Bethel College, N. Newton, Kan., and the American Society of Aviation Artists.

WILMER KOERNER

Wilmer Koerner, 84, Freeman, died June 6, 2002 at Freeman Community Nursing Home. He was born Sept. 13, 1917 in rural Freeman and married Leona Streyle on Oct. 20, 1946.

Survivors include his wife, Leona; three sons: Delano Koerner, Hurley, Darrel Koerner, Sturgis, Darwin Koerner, Yankton; two daughters: Dorothea Hoebelheinrich, Yankton, Delphine Olson, Sioux Falls; 12 grandchildren; four great-grand-children; two brothers: Calvin Koerner, Sioux Center, Iowa, and Aaron Koerner, Freeman; and a sister, Ruth Record of Menno.

He was preceded in death by one son, Duayne.

The funeral was held Tuesday, June 11 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Reformed Church, Menno, with burial at Kassel-Zion Reformed Cemetery, Menno.

ANDREW S. GLANZER

Dr. A. S. (Andrew S.) Glanzer, D.O., 92, of Marion, passed away early Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at the Freeman Community Nursing Home in Freeman.

The funeral was held Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m. at the Salem Mennonite Brethren Church, rural Bridgewater, with Pastor Will Fadenrecht officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Andrew Samuel Glanzer was born on April 12, 1910 to Samuel S. and Justina (Gross) Glanzer. Andrew grew up in Bridgewater where he attended grade school. At 12 years of age Andrew's mother died and later his father was married to Rachel Hofer.

His parents and family then moved to Onida where they farmed and he attended and graduated from Onida High School. He continued his education at the University of SD at Vermillion and from there went to Kirksville College of Osteopathy at Kirksville, Mo., where he received his degree as osteopathic physician in 1936.

Andrew was united in marriage to Mary L. Hofer on June 16, 1936. To this union three children were born; Donald Joseph, who died in infancy, Donavan Andrew and Karol Jean. Andrew was a wonderful husband and a kind and loving father.

Mother and Dad made their home and practice in Bridgewater. One year later it was decided to move to Menno. Here Dad practiced his profession over 50 years. Many joys and sorrows came at this home, but he loved his profession and served the community with great devotion and cared for his family in the same way.

In the year 1939, Andrew saw his need for salvation. It was during revival meetings held in Menno by Rev. Frank Wiebe that he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and found peace with God. He was baptized in 1940 by Rev. D.W. Tschetter and was accepted into the Salem MB Church. He served as a faithful member, loved his church, prayed often and listened well.

In May 1994, Dad and Mom held a sale and moved to the Village Estate Apartments in Freeman. Five years later they moved to Marion. With failing health and strength, Andrew was admitted to the Tieszen Memorial Nursing Home on Nov. 19, 1999.

Andrew was admitted to the Freeman Community Hospital on Oct. 16, and passed on to his heavenly home on Oct. 31.

Those who will cherish his memory: his wife Mary of 66 years of Marion; son Donovan (JoLynn) Glanzer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; daughter Karol (Robert L.) Hofer of Marion; granddaughter Karolyn (Larry) Langerock of Marion; grandsons Korey Hofer, Marion and Kevin (Tiffany) Hofer, St. Paul, Minn.; four great- grandsons: Lincoln (5), Landon (3), Lawton and Logan (4 months) all of Marion; and many nieces, nephews, and friends of the church and community.

Family members who preceded him in death were his infant son, Donald Joseph; his parents; his step-mother, Rachel Hofer Glanzer; sisters Susie Hofer and Katy Hofer; stepsisters Mary Glanzer and Katy Walter; brothers William S., Samuel and George; stepbrothers Ed R. and John R. Hofer and in-laws; and a granddaughter, Kathleen Joy Hofer.
