Stanley Erickson

Funeral Services for Stanley Erickson, 82, longtime resident of Lead, were held March 13, 2001, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, with Rev. Lloyd Miller, officiating. Burial followed in the Bison Cemetery.

Stanley died March 8, 2001, at Northern Hills General Hospital, Deadwood.

He was born September 1, 1918, in Gettysburg, to Henry Randolph and Martha (Severson) Erickson. The family moved to a farm outside Bison, when he was two years old. He attended a country school for 9 years then quit school to work on the family farm. He worked on different farms in the Bison area for several years. He worked in the apple industry in Washington State, then returned to South Dakota and drove trucks in 1947 and 1948. On September 22, 1949, he married Anna Mae Broesamle in Belle Fourche.

From 1949 to 1953, he worked for the county highway department. In 1953, they moved to Lead, where he worked for the forest service for four months. He went to work for Homestake Mine in Lead and worked there for sixteen years. After leaving the mine, he worked as a carpenter for a brief time. In January of 1970, he returned to work for Homestake in forest service products in Spearfish, where he took early retirement in 1980 after fire destroyed the sawmill. He remained active in the community of Lead in both the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Loyal Order of Moose.

Survivors include four daughters; Gerry Cass, Flowery Branch, Ga, Noel Erickson, Lead, Susan (& Bill) Heinke, Sioux City, Iowa, and Rebecca Erickson, Hill City, two sons; Stanley Erickson Jr. and Robert Erickson, both of Aurora, Colo., two sisters; Marcella Verstegen, and Bernice Featherly, both of Omak, Wash., one brother R.G. Bill (& Phyllis) Erickson, Kulm, ND, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Anna Mae, one daughter Marcella Erickson in infancy, three brothers Pat Erickson, Carl Erickson, and Marvin Erickson, and one sister Vera Erickson.

Memorials can be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Armine R. Kuhlman,

Funeral Services for Armine R. Kuhlman, 90, of Lead were held March 12, 2001 at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lead. Pastor LloydMiller officiated.

Armine died on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 at the Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish. Burial was in the Lydia Cemetery near Lakin,Kan. on March 13, 2001.

Armine was born June 22, 1910 at Lydia, Kan., to August & Clara (Prousch) Kuhlman. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a masters degree.

He married Della M. James on April 4, 1970 in Lakin, Kansas. They moved to the Black Hills in 1973 after retiring from U.S.D.A. with over 33 years of service as an agronomist.

Armine was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lead, a 60-year member of the Lions Club and the Boy Scouts, and received the "Top Hand Award" from the Society of Range Management. He also received the Silver Beaver and the Llama Award in the Boy Scouts.

Survivors include his wife, Della of Lead; two sons, Myron Kuhlman of Houston, Texas, and Armine Kuhlman of SanDiego, Calif.; a step-son, Fred Anschutz of Tonto Verde, Ariz.; and a step-daughter, Nancy Robinson of Marion, Ill.; five Grandchildren and two Great Grandchildren; a sister, Violet Joiner of Lakin, Kan., and a brother, Elton Kuhlman of Great Bend, Kan.

Armine was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife in 1968, and a sister.

A memorial has been established to the Sight and Sound project of the Lions Club.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.

Gordon Lewis

Gordon Lewis, 92, Spearfish, died Wednesday, March 9, 2001, at the Ft Meade V.A. Medial Center.

Inurment will take place at a later date at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Mr. Lewis was born August 23, 1908, at Kittscoty, Alberta, Canada to James Edward and Angela McVain (Coutts) Lewis. The family moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where Gordon attended school until the ninth grade. The family moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., where he graduated from high school. He worked for Carey Ranch, near Cheyenne, S&S Packing Plant, Cheyenne, before beginning his career as a projectionist, with Cheyenne Theaters. In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII. In 1945, he received an honorable discharge and returned to Cheyenne to continue working for the theater.

In 1938, he married Norma Stewart, in the Holy Ghost, Cathedral, Denver. In 1979, he moved to Spearfish, where he has since resided.

Mr. Lewis was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus; a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Spearfish, and the VFW Post #5860.

He enjoyed gardening and restoring antique furniture. He also enjoyed mowing his lawn with his riding lawn mower. He had a passion for politics, debating and watching football.

Survivors include his daughter Margaret Lewis, Spearfish, two sons Jim (& Jane) Lewis, Casper, Wyo., and George (& Katy) Lewis, Roseburg, Ore, two grandchildren Kirk Lewis, Denver, Colo., and Krystal (& Kevin) Gritten, Michigan City, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma in 1954 and two sisters, Margaret Metzler and Angela Dulin.

A memorial has been established to the Retired Priest's Fund and a scholarship program.

Jon Noel Olson

Funeral services for Jon Noel Olson, 44, Sturgis, were held March 14, 2001 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Gary Oreshoski officiated.

Jon died Thursday, March 8, 2001 at the Sturgis Community Health Care Center.

Jon was born Oct. 5, 1956, at Deadwood to Edgar and Shirley (Temple) Olson. He grew up in Lead and graduated from Lead High School. He joined the U.S. Army and served from 1974 until 1976. Jon received his nursing degree from Walla Walla Community College in Walla Walla, Wash. He has worked at VA hospitals, Indian Health Service hospitals and private hospitals during his career as an Registered Nurse.

Jon married Julie Glovik in Sturgis Dec. 31, 1978. Their daughter Sara, was born in 1982. They have lived in South Dakota, Washington, North Dakota and Arizona.

Survivorts include his wife, Julie Olson, Sturgis; his mother, Shirley Dovell, Whitewood; one daughter Sara Olson, Spearfish; two brothers, James Olson, Casper Wyo. and Jeff Olson, Whitewood; and two sisters, Julie Milam, Spokane, Wash. and Jean Grosek, Utah.

His father Edgar, preceded him in death.

Bertha Helen Bell

Funeral Services for Bertha Helen Bell, 101, long-time Spearfish resident, were held March 19, 2001, at the United Methodist Church, Spearfish, with Rev. Kip Roozen, and Rev. Peter Moe, Rapid City, officiating. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery, Spearfish.

Bertha died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility, Spearfish.

Bertha was born September 23, 1899, in Antelope Creek, Morton County, ND, to Charles and Rose (Heil) Stoller. She grew up in North Dakota and attended rural schools there. When she was a young lady, she enjoyed dancing and often danced to Lawrence Welk and his band.

On July 4, 1915, she married Guy Pierce Bell, in McIntosh. The couple lived in Elgin, ND until 1931, when they moved to Spearfish. She remained in Spearfish for 70 years.

Mrs. Bell had a life span over 3 centuries; she saw many changes in that time. She was very fortunate to have lived in her home past her 100th birthday. Her family totalled 101 descendants, at her age of 101.

Mrs. Bell was a member of the Spearfish Senior Citizen Center and was one of the first members of the Happy Times Band and the chorus. She continued playing with the band through February of this year. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Spearfish. She enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens. For over 50 years she participated in the Black Hills Passion Play, and was a loyal, enthusiastic fan of the LA Dodgers.

Survivors include three daughters; Ruby Thomas, Garnette (& Lyle) Ainsworth and Sonya (& Augie) Albers; two sons Tom Bell and Roger Bell, all of Spearfish; two daughters-in-law Bobbie Bell and Betty Bell, both of Spearfish; one sister Violet Lund Hansen, Kalispell, Mont.; 21 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren and 30 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband,Guy; two sons, LeRoy (Bud) Bell and Doug Bell and eight sisters and brothers.

A Memorial has been established for the United Methodist Church, Spearfish.

Mrs. Bell's children wish to extend grateful thanks for the special loving care given to their mother by Dr. Roderick McVeety and her granddaughter LeeAnn Bell, RN, this expression of tenderness will be remembered always.

Nicola Bulat

Mass of Christian Burial for Nicola Bulat, 95, formerly of Lead, was held March 17, 2001 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Spearfish, with the Rev. Kerry Prendiville, officiating. Burial followed in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Lead.

Nicola died at her home in Spearfish on Tuesday, March, 13, 2001.

Nicola Radovich was born April 4, 1905 at Lead, to Antone and Mary (Glanovich) Radovich. In 1928 she married Joseph J. Bulat in Oakland, Calif.

They made their home in Lead.

She was employed at Thorpe Jewelery in Deadwood for several years, and also with the Lead Public Schools for 20 years before retiring.

She enjoyed her garden, her raspberry patch and making raspberry jelly.

Grateful for sharing her life are two daughters; Louise Hart and Helen Hart of Spearfish; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

She was proceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph; a daughter Mary Jo Wagner; son-in-laws Joe Hart and James Hart; two sisters and two brothers. She will be dearly missed by all who loved her.

The Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish is entrusted with arrangements.

Florence Bernice Oliver Burris

Florence Bernice Oliver Burris passed away March 19, 2001 at University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Connie R. Grenstiner,

Funeral services for Connie R. Grenstiner, 48, Deadwood, were held on March 21, 2001 at 10:00 A.M. at the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead. Pastor Albert Harty officiated. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery at Deadwood

Connie died Friday, March 16, 2001 at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City.

Connie Rae Porter was born September 12, 1952 to Gerald "Mike" and Elaine (Crofutt) Porter in Hoven. Connie lived and attended school in Spearfish until 1963 when the family moved to Deadwood. She graduated from Deadwood High School in 1970.

On August 11, 1973 she was married to Edwin Ray Grenstiner in Lead. They made their home in Grand Junction, Colo. for a time. They returned to the Deadwood area in 1974 and they started their loving family of three, Brandi Leigh, Jason Edwin and Lacey Anne.

Connie was extremely gifted in decorating, arts and crafts, crocheting and sewing. She enjoyed motorcycling with her husband and friends through the Black Hills and spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. At the time of her death she was working at the Mineral Palace in Deadwood.

Those grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Edwin, three children, Brandi Grenstiner-Hamilton and her husband Delbert, Jason Grenstiner and Priscilla Lary, and Lacey Grenstiner; two grandchildren, Kole Ryan Hamiton and Kalei Ranae Hamilton; her parents, Mike and Elaine Porter all of Deadwood; one brother, Jerry Porter and his wife Bonnie of Lead; one sister Shary Porter and David Waisanen; her nieces and nephews, James, Melayna, Mandy, Jerry Jr., Justin and Ray Wright; her mother-in-law, Irene Grenstiner of Deadwood; a brother-in-law, Tim Grenstiner and Kathy Stygles. Numerous uncles and aunts, and cousins that were all dear to her.

We the family are grateful to have shared in Connie's life and we are blessed with many fond memories and will be missed tremendously by all.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.

Donald F. Kaiser

Funeral services for Donald F. Kaiser, 71, Spearfish, were held March 19, 2001 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winner. A second service was held March 20, 2001 at Hope Lutheran Church in Spearfish. The Reverend Lloyd Lemke officiated at both services. Burial followed, with full military honors, provided by the Spearfish honor guard, American Legion Post # 164 and VFW Post # 5860 at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Don died March 15, 2001 at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center.

Don was born July 27, 1929 to Henry and Ella (Klundt) Kaiser at Herrick. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church at Herrick. The family moved to Millboro . He was confirmed at St Paul's Lutheran Church south of Colome on August 13, 1942. He served in the US Army in 1951-52 during the Korean War. He was discharged in February 1952 and returned of South Dakota and farmed with his father south of Colome for two years. They moved to Spearfish in 1976 where they owned and operated the Queen's Motel for 18 years. They also owned and operated the Classic Car Museum for five years. They retired from the motel in 1992.

In addition to enjoying his children and grandchildren, he liked to play cards and was known to do a bit of bluffing. This last year, muscular degeneration caused him to give up his card playing and driving.

He was a member of the Spearfish Chamber of Commerce and the Spearfish Hospitality Association. He was a past commander of Thayer-Waters American Legion Post No. 146, Colome, and was a lifetime member of the VFW.

Don was a faithful husband and loving father and a doting grandfather. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Lorraine; three sons, Dan Kaiser, Dick (& Leona) Kaiser, Doug (& Faith) Kaiser; Two daughters, Donnelle (& Randy) Culver, and Donnalee (& Doug) Smith; and 14 grandchildren, all of Spearfish. Also two sisters, Irene (Mrs Ted ) Kindt and Shirley (Mrs. Verlyn) Parks, both of Winner; and one brother, Bob (& Marcella) Kaiser, Belle Fourche.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John and Harold

A memorial has been established for Hope Lutherans Church, Spearfish.

Filder Funeral Chapel of Spearfish are entrusted with the arrangements.

Robert Norris Price

Robert Norris Price, 83, longtime resident of Spearfish, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at the Mountainview Nursing Home, in White Sulphur Springs, Mont.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 22, 2001, at the United Methodist Church, Spearfish, with Rev. Kip Roozen, officiating. Masonic Rites will be conducted by Spearfish Masonic Lodge #18 AF & AM, Melvin Seymour, acting Worshipful Master. Inurnment will be at 1:00 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, with full Military Honors, provided by American Legion Post #164 and VFW Post #5860, Spearfish.

Bob was born April 23, 1917, in Deadwood; he grew up and attended school in Newell. After graduating from the University of South Dakota with a business degree, he joined the US Army Air Corps. He served in WWII in the Pacific Theater, as a navigator with the 315th Bomb Wing.

On July 25, 1942, he married Doris Sleep, in Santa Ana, Calif., during the war. Following his discharge they resided in Newell until 1962, where he managed his parent's drug store, Price and Son Drug Store. In 1962, the family moved to Spearfish; they purchased and operated the Downtown McColley Motel for 22 years. They retired in 1984.

Bob was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 60 years, a member of the Order of Eastern Star Queen City Chapter #89, the VFW Post # 5860, American Legion Post #164, and Sons of the Confederate Veterans. He was active in the Spearfish Chamber of Commerce and was a 30-year extra cast member of the Black Hills Passion Play. He was a member of Black Hills State University Green and Gold Club, and enjoyed the college basketball games. He also enjoyed traveling, meeting people, reading, totem pole carving, and watching sports.

Survivors include one son, Sumner L. Price and his wife Valerie, Mt Home, Idaho, two daughters; Adrienne L. Price, Pahrump, Nev., and Miriam E. Barth and her husband Tim, White Sulphur Springs, Mont.; four grandchildren, three step grandchildren, two great-grandsons, and one step great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife Doris in 1999.

Memorials have been established to the Black Hills State University Green and Gold Club and the Mountainview Nursing Home.
