Betty Mraz, 82

Betty was born on July 8, 1926, in Dupree, to George and Elizabeth (Stephenson) Till. She was raised in rural Dupree. She attended school at Elm Creek and graduated from Dupree High School. After high school, she went on to Presentation College and received her nursing degree in 1947. In 1955 she married Chester W. Mraz at Dupree. She worked on the ranch with her husband and was also a nurse at the Cheyenne Agency Hospital and at the Fort Meade V.A. Medical Center in Sturgis.

She enjoyed sewing, baking and gardening.

Betty is survived by her husband, Chester, of Dupree; her two sons, William and his wife Gay, of Dupree, and their son Montana, and son James and his wife Kristin, of Dupree, and their two children, Cassandra and Maria. She is also survived by one brother, Joseph Till, of Ekalaka, Mont.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Gerald and Thomas.

Ronald L. Morrow, 78

Ronald L. Morrow, 78, of Armour, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, after fighting cancer with dignity, courage and prayer at Douglas County Memorial Hospital, Armour. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at St. Peter Lutheran Church near Armour on Highway 44. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., on Thursday, Sept. 11, at St. Peter Lutheran Church near Armour. Burial will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 11, at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Armour.

Ronald L. Morrow was born on Nov. 17, 1929, in Mitchell, to William and Lola Morrow. Ron spent his early years in Mitchell, moving with his family to Armour when he was 15. Ron lived life to the fullest, serving in the U.S. Marines (“Semper Fi”), marrying Darline, the love of his life, raising a family of four children, running a successful poultry business, being active in his church, serving as sheriff of Douglas County and later as a Douglas County Commissioner.

Ron was a loving father and grandfather, delighting in his grandchildren’s lives. Ron had a prodigious memory for people, history and geography, and could spin an Irish tale at the drop of a hat, coffee cup in hand. His interest in aviation was surpassed only by his love for community and the church. He truly enjoyed working and meeting with people far and wide, whether by serving customers, attending a meeting, or frying up his famous pancakes for a benefit. Ron’s faith and patriotism were seen daily in his enthusiastic civic service, political involvement, and work for social justice.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dar; four children: Gretchen (Alan) Bray, Joe (Janet) Morrow, Jane Morrow (Keith Kearcher), Ann (Gregg) DeSpiegler; nine grandchildren; brother, Dwight (Dot) Morrow; sister, Marlene (Jim) Skillings; nieces and nephews; and last but not least, a host of great friends. He will be dearly missed by all.

Memorials are preferred to Joy Ranch in Watertown or the Armour Carnegie Library.

Laura Ann Eberhard, 72

Laura Ann Eberhard, 72 of Pierre, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, at her home in Pierre.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

“Baby” Ann was born at home in St. Onge on Dec. 11, 1935, to Francis and Laura (Rolando) McNeill, the youngest of six Irish-Italian sisters. She grew up on the family farm and attended high school at SHS in Spearfish, where she was a cheerleader. The mother of four, Colleen, Billie, Zane and Matt, worked as a farm wife near McLaughlin and then as a waitress later in Spearfish.

In 1977, she and her husband Daryl moved to Gillette, Wyo., where she was head waitress at Boot Hill restaurant for a number of years, while Daryl worked at Exxon’s Rawhide Mine.

In 1989, the couple bought the Terrace Motel and moved to Pierre, running that business for 16 years. She was known as “The” Ann to residents and feared by some, even though she was only 5 foot, 2 inches. She always had time to listen, even when people had little to say, and she will be missed and remembered by most who met her.

Ann enjoyed laughing, gardening, watching birds, garage sales, sewing and most of all helping people.

Ann is survived by her husband, Daryl; two sisters: Caroline and Mary Jo; two daughters: Colleen and Billie; two sons: Zane and Matt; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father and three sisters: Margaret, Colleen and Geraldine.

Cremation will take place in Rapid City, and another service is planned for sometime in the spring near St. Onge, where her ashes will be placed at the cemetery within sight of the family farm she grew up on, and the creek where she laughed, played and swam as a girl.

Always the mother, to her kids and everyone else.

Isburg Funeral Chapel of Pierre has been placed in care of the arrangements.

Maxine Isenberg, 88

Maxine Isenberg was born in Pollock to Max and Olivia Meihak on Nov. 30, 1920. She passed away on Dec. 7, 2008.

Maxine was educated in Pollock; Bismarck, N.D.; and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. She started her career in South Dakota government in 1940 working in various departments.

On Nov. 7, 1941, Maxine married Leonard Charles Isenberg, of Pierre, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Leonard was killed in World War II on Aug. 13, 1943, in Sansapor, Dutch Guinea. Maxine and Leonard had one son, Michael. Michael died in 1996.

Maxine entered the School of Journalism at the University of Minnesota when her son, Michael, was 6 years old and received her degree in 1948 at which time she returned to work in state government in South Dakota. She eventually became secretary to Governor Joe Foss during the mid-’50s.

When Foss became the first commissioner of the newly formed American Football League, Maxine moved to Dallas, Texas, to serve as his secretary. When the American Football League merged with the National Football League the office moved to New York and Maxine joined the staff of Commissioner Pete Rozelle. Maxine worked for almost 25 years in professional football while living in New York City. She helped organize many of the events surrounding the first Super Bowl and subsequent bowls over the years. Maxine worked extensively with football operations and owner relationships.

Maxine returned to South Dakota when she retired in 1985 after building a home on three acres of land in Stanley County on the banks of the Missouri River. Maxine enjoyed her retired life with friends and many cats and dogs.

Maxine was preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband, Leonard Isenberg, son, Michael, brothers, Glen and Ronald, and sister, Wanda Morgen.

Maxine is survived by nieces Janet Wettergren, Stillwater, Minn.; Roberta Myers, Fort Pierre; Glenda Somsen, Minnetonka, Minn.; and nephews, Brian Morgen, Sheridan, Wyo.; and Max Henry Meihak, Casper, Wyo.

The family is planning a memorial service and internment to be held in Pierre later this spring. Arrangements are being made with the Feigum-Van Lith Funeral Home in Pierre.

Elaine Barbara Dolin, 70

It is with great sadness the Dolin family announces the passing of Elaine Barbara (Surdej) Dolin, of Rapid City. She passed from this life Sept. 14, 2008, at the age of 70 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Bill Zandri. Visitation will be held at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, with a rosary service at 6:30 p.m.

Elaine was born Jan. 12, 1938, to Michael and Wanda (Kukulski) Surdej in Chicago, Ill. Elaine married Ronald S. Dolin on Aug. 30, 1958. The couple moved to South Dakota in 1966 to attend Black Hills State College. In 1970, Elaine received her bachelor of arts degree in English. She taught high school English in North Carolina and Eagle Butte. Elaine was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren and was always supportive of each of our talents.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her husband of 50 years, Ronald, of Rapid City; daughter, Kathryn (Wayne) Ham, of Tipton, Iowa; son, Ronald (Olichka) Dolin, PhD of Los Alamos, N.M.; daughter, Michele (Jon) Farris, of Pierre; nine grandchildren: Jessica (Jim) Arndt, Clearwater, Fla., Ryan (Rachelle) Ham, Tipton, Iowa, Ashley (Jason) Puerto, Washington, Iowa; Joshua, Alexandra and Nicholas Dolin, of Los Alamos, N.M.; Matthew, Megan and Andrew Farris, of Pierre; six great-grandchildren: Taylor Ham, Haylee, Madelyn, and Wyatt Ham; Alexander and Victoria Elaine Puerto. She is survived by a sister, Geri (Stan) Koziara, Plentywood, Mont.; sisters-in-law Jean, Helen and Marie, of Chicago, Ill., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dietrich Knobloch, 86

Dietrich Knobloch, 86, Brookings, died Sept. 10, 2008, at the United Retirement center in Brookings.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008, with a prayer service to follow at Osthus Funeral Home in DeSmet. Services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at the American Lutheran Church in DeSmet, with Randy Koeller officiating. Interment will follow the service at the DeSmet Cemetery.

Dietrich Edwin Knobloch was born Sept. 25, 1921, at Alvord, Iowa, to Dietrich and Julia (Koch) Knobloch. He was raised on a farm and attended country school in the Lester, Iowa, area.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from June 16, 1942 to Nov. 30, 1945. He was involved in the campaigns of the South Pacific and was a highly decorated soldier. His patriotism was unwavering, and he was a member of the American Legion for more than 50 years.

Dietrich married Doris Oihus on Sept. 9, 1946. He worked on the railroad until he began farming in Iowa, later moving to Arlington, where they farmed for many years. In the early ’70s, they moved to DeSmet, where he worked for Peavey Alfalfa Feeds until his retirement. Born to this union were eight children.

Farming, gardening, fishing, hunting, the Fourth of July and other patriotic holidays, John Deere memorabilia, family and friends, and his many pets were but a few of his great pleasures.

His is survived by his children, Joan (Garry) Thompson, Pierre; Bruce, Arlington; Carol, Seattle; Brenda Welch, Huron; John (Lauri) and Gretchen (Mike) Aspon, Brookings; his daughter-in-law, Kathy Lynch-Knobloch, Madison, Wis.; four sisters, Emma, Paulina, Wilma Hoogeveen, Rock Rapids, Iowa; Violet (Ray) Luthi, Lamar, Mo.; two brothers, Wilbert (Helen), Lester, Iowa; Adolph (Jean), Algona, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Helen, Larchwood, Iowa; Vera, Lester, Iowa; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; two sons, Leslie and Timothy; his parents; his sisters, Julia Plattner, Elizabeth Barker, Lydia Moser, and Emily; his brothers, Ernst, Albert, Benjamin and Earl; his brothers-in-law, Albert Plattner, Edris Barker and Adolph Moser; and his sisters-in-law, Martha, Salome and Clara.

James C. Deuchar, Jr., 52

James C. Deuchar, Jr., 52, Perre, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Pierre. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at Feigum-VanLith Funeral Home, Pierre. Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at Feigum-VanLith Funeral Home, Pierre. The online register book is at www.feigumvanlith.com.

James C. Deuchar, Jr., son of James Deuchar, Sr., and Geraldine (Schopp), was born July 18, 1956, in Deadwood. As a child, he family moved to Mission, where Jim attended Todd County Schools. During his years in Mission, Jim was chief of the Mission Fire Department and was named fireman of the year in 1983. It was in Mission, where he began his 30-year career with the South Dakota Department of Transportation. At the time of his death he was a lead worker with DOT at the Pierre Region Shop. In 2007, Jim won first place in the state DOT snowplow driving competition.

In the late ’80s, Jim moved to Pierre and continued his work with DOT. On July 17, 2004, he married Mary (Ames-Schnabel). Jim loved the outdoors and spent his free time camping, fishing, hunting and working in his garden. Jim loved helping his neighbors and friends. He was a member of Moose Lodge in Fort Pierre.

Jim is survived by his wife, Mary; four children: Christopher, Danielle and David Deuchar, of Flandreau, Maria Deuchar, of Pierre; six step-children: Jeremy Murphy, Chicago, Emily (Drew) Garry, Brookings, Andrew Murphy, Sioux Falls, Brian (Jackie) Murphy, North Carolina, Jennifer (Brent) Danielson, Aberdeen, and Jamie (Nikki) Schnabel, Pierre; three sisters: Cindy (Ralph) VanEpps, Kenyon, Minn., Janet (Roland) Batterman, Tripp, and Laurie (Shawn) Kelly, Iowa; nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bill Webb.

Walter L. Dockter, 89

Walter L. Dockter, 89, Garrison, formerly of Bismarck, died Sept. 13, 2008. Services are tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at First Baptist Church, Bismarck. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan, N.D.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., Tuesday, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, N.D., with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Walter L. Dockter was born Aug. 6, 1919, at Anamoose, N.D., to John M. and Mary (Spear) Dockter. He attended school in Sheridan County, N.D., and helped on the family farm.

He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1936 to 1937. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Oct. 25, 1941, and was stationed at Fort Snelling, Minn., for basic training. Being placed in the 27th Army Division, 105th Infantry Regiment out of New York, he was sent to Camp Walters, Texas, for more training. He then spent 30 months overseas which began in Honolulu for further training and restoration of Pearl Harbor. He was then sent to the South Pacific Theater of Operations in March, 1942. After extensive fighting in the Marianas Islands, Walter was wounded during the Battle of Saipan, July 11, 1944. He was hospitalized in Honolulu and Gardner General Hospital in Chicago until Oct. 9, 1945, where he was honorably discharged as a Tech VI Code clerk. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Asiatic Theater Service Medal, American Defense Medal, six Overseas Service bars, a Combat Infantry Badge, and qualified as an expert in bayonet.

Walter met his lifelong love, Linda Wacker, while in the hospital in Chicago. They were married June 9, 1946, in the Baptist Parsonage in McClusky, N.D. He was twice elected as sheriff of Sheridan County, N.D., first elected in 1947 and served as sheriff from January 1948 to December 1952. He then farmed near Mercer, N.D., from 1953 to 1962, during which time he was assessor for Medicine Hill Township, precinct committeeman, and vice chairman of the Democratic NPL Party.

He moved with his family to Bismarck in 1962, and worked as a chauffeur, security officer, and special assistant to governors William Guy, Arthur Link, and Allen Olson and families for 23 years, retiring Dec. 31, 1984. He was trained as an executive body guard and was a special agent with the North Dakota Crime Bureau.

He served as post commander of the American Legion Post 124 in McClusky, N.D., and was a member of the American Legion Post 1 in Bismarck, N.D. He was a lifelong member of the VFW, the DAV, and BPOE. He was baptized with his son, Richard, in the First Baptist Church in Bismarck, N.D., served on the Board of Deacons and Trustees, and was a past chairman of the Christian Education Department.

Walter was a trusted friend and confidant to many people. He loved to get together with friends and family, play games, discuss issues of the day, and watch sports, especially his beloved New York Yankees in which he shared a close interest with his Army unit comrades.

He is survived by one sister, Helen Bonnet, of Turtle Lake, N.D.; one sister-in-law, Peggy Dockter, of McClusky, N.D.; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Twila Dockter, of Pierre; and his seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Al and Laurie Adams and their children Alexandra, Cole, and Victoria, Krista Eilers, Bradley W. Dockter, Brandon J. Dockter, Brent R. Dockter, Taya M. Dockter, and Samantha E. Dockter, and a close friend of his son, Robert, Karen Schoenberg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda (Wacker) Dockter, one son, Robert J. Dockter, one grandson, Tyler J. Dockter; his parents, John M. and Mary (Spear) Dockter; two brothers, one sister, one sister-in-law, and one brother-in-law, Johnny and Elsie Dockter, Art Dockter, Eleanor Whitman (Fred Whitman), and Albert Bonnet.

Mary Ellen Wipf, 64

Mary Ellen Wipf was born Nov. 18, 1943. She was the daughter of Forrest (Daniel) and Francis (Lomica) King, of Pierre.

Mary Ellen grew up in the Capa and Blunt areas, where she attended school.

On Nov. 22, 1963, Mary Ellen was united in marriage to Gary Wipf at Blunt.

After her marriage, the couple lived in Aberdeen and later settled in Madison, where she raised her family and was a day care provider for many years, until her retirement in 1985.

Mary Ellen enjoyed trapshooting, bowling, hunting, fishing, reading, music, cooking and spending time with her family.

Mary Ellen passed away Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Gary, of Madison; three daughters: Noreen Wipf, of Madison, Lisa (Mark) Kostboth, of Rapid City, Laura (David) Simonsen, of Chester; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers: Lowell (Thelma) King, of Blunt, Bob King, of Huron, Gary (Kay) King, of Sheridan, Wyo., Bud (Dona) King, of Hot Springs; a special family friend, Taleesia Heppler, of Madison; family pets, Petunia and Daisy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters.

Hattie McNeill, 99

Hattie McNeill, 99, Pierre, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at Maryhouse TCU, Pierre. Memorial service will be 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at Seventh Day Adventist Church, Pierre. Inurnment will be at the Maple Wood Cemetery, Iroquois. Online register book can be found at www.feigumvanlith.com.

Memorials can be directed to Hospice or the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Pierre.

Hattie Wolff was born Sept. 26, 1908, near Osmond, Neb., to Bernhard and Anna Wolff. She was the sixth of ten children. When she was 2 years old, the family moved to a farm east of Cottonwood; she went to country school through the eighth grade, then to Cottonwood High School for three years but graduated from Philip High School in 1927. In 1929, she went to live in Huron, where she worked at Armours Packing Plant.

In 1931, she married Van McNeill in Huron, where they lived until 1936, when Van, due to a period of ill health, spent three years in a TB sanitarium at Sanator. During these three years, Hattie worked in Rapid City.

In 1941, they moved to a farm near Iroquois and later continued farming near Huron. In 1959, both were baptized and joined the Huron Seventh Day Adventist Church. They continued farming until the death of her husband in 1963. Hattie then worked in a nursing home in Huron and also in Snohomish, Wash.

She came back to South Dakota and worked in St. Mary’s Hospital for 12 years. She retired at 69 years old. During her retirement, she made 80-some quilts for friends and for the Needy Dorcas Society of SDA Church. In October of 1998, Hattie was the BankWest Senior Celebrity of the Month.

She is survived by one sister, Esther Scotvold, of Bellevue, Wash., and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Van; four sisters: Martha, Nettie, Anna and Frieda; and four brothers: Carl, Ben, Reinhold and Herb.

Roxanne Tipton, 60

Roxanne “Roxie” Tipton, 60, Pierre, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at her home in Pierre, following a year-long battle with cancer.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., today, with a 7 p.m. scripture service, at Feigum-VanLith Funeral Home, in Pierre. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, in Pierre. Interment will be at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Lakeview Cemetery, in Clear Lake. Online register book can be found at www.feigumvanlith.com.

Roxanne “Roxie” Buller was born Jan. 26, 1948, in Watertown, to John and Dolores (Byer) Buller. She grew up and attended school in Clear Lake, graduating in 1966. Following high school, Roxie attended nursing school in Huron, graduating in 1969.

She was united in marriage with Dennis Tipton on July 12, 1969, in Clear Lake. They made their home in Clear Lake and she went work at the hospital. Roxie later worked at the hospital in Watertown for a time. In May of 1978, Roxie and Dennis moved to Milbank, where she worked for St. Bernard’s Hospital for 17 years. She started with the Department of Health in 1995, working in the Aberdeen office, and in 1996, they moved to Pierre when Roxie was transferred. In November, she was honored with two awards: Outstanding Contribution to Public Health Award from the secretary of health and the Francis T. Ishida Award for Excellence in Customer Service from Region 8 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid in Denver, Colo.

Roxie enjoyed reading books, spending time in her yard tending to her flowers and garden, and most of all, time with her family.

Roxanne is survived by her husband, Dennis, of Pierre; one son, Bryan, and his wife, Holly, of Pierre; one daughter, Holly Sabby, and her husband, Colin, of Chaska, Minn.; three grandsons, Zachary, Landon, and Myles; her mother, Dolores Buller, of Pierre; and one sister, Sheila Carpenter, of Pierre.

Roxanne was preceded in death by her father and her grandparents.

Edna Braden, 79

Edna Alice Braden died from complications from cancer Friday, Dec. 5, at Hospice in Longview, Wash. A celebration of Edna’s life was observed Dec. 7, in Woodland, Wash., where Edna had lived for many years enjoying her family, gardening, fishing and hunting. She shot her first elk in Nov. 2007 at the age of 79.

Edna was a graduate of Pierre High School as Edna Alice Smith.

Edna is survived by two sisters, Virginia Alzner Lang, Portland, Ore., and Barbara Hurliman, Waldport, Ore.; daughter, Lynda Goreth, Glasgow, Ky.; sons, Darwin, Delbert and Richard Rounds, Woodland, Wash.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Gene and Eric Braden; three stepdaughters, Nola and Angie Braden and Colleen Scott; and several stepgrandchildren.

Edna was preceded in death by husbands Al Rounds and Arnold Braden, parents Clarence and Frances Smith, and brothers Donald, Milton, Curtis, Lowell, Dick, Gene and Cecil.
