Randel Walgamuth, 47

Randel Marion Walgamuth, 47, Denver, and formerly of Sturgis and Custer, passed away on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at the Rose Medical Center in Denver, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Randy was born April 18, 1961, in Rapid City, to Roland “Bud” and Frances “Fran” (Vogeler) Walgamuth.

His family lived in Caputa during his preschool years and settled in Sturgis, where Randy attended grade school and high school, graduating from Sturgis Brown High School in 1979. He then went on to study business at Black Hills State University.

Randy’s interests and talents included cooking, canning, gardening, photography and decorating (especially for Christmas). He enjoyed plants, animals and making friends. His entrepreneurial spirit began at an early age with snow shoveling and delivering papers. In his teenage years he was employed at Lynn’s Grocery, working his way up to assistant manager.

Once he completed his education, he moved to Rapid City to manage the roller rink. Then it was on to Custer, where he established many business ventures including: High Country Herald Newspaper, High Country Printing Company, High Country Gift Shop and Christmas Store and High Country Greenhouse. He owned and operated a gym and a golf driving range. Randy also owned and managed apartments.

Randy sold his business ventures in Custer and moved to Denver to Work in retail sales starting with Kohl’s and then moving to Fashion Bar. He then transferred to advertising sales becoming the district manager for Network Communications Inc., where he was employed at the time of his passing.

Randy leaves behind two sisters, Judy (Evan) Taylor, Sturgis, and Karla (Larry) Wickwire, Aladdin, Wyo.; his brother, Ron (Myrtle) Walgamuth, Pierre; his niece, Bradie; nephews, Rod, Bo, RJ, JR, Graham and Kolby; as well as several great-nieces and nephews.

Also surviving is his extended family, Janet Carlson, Lynn Moran and Scott Shaw, plus a vast multitude of friends, who were his chosen family.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents, Bud and Fran; his sister, Shirley Jean; and his brother, Jerry Jim.

Private services were held in Denver, with the Monarch Society of Denver lovingly handling cremation.

At Randy’s request, a celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at the Canyon Lake Resort, 2720 Chapel Lane in Rapid City.

In remembrance and celebration of Randy, the family invites you to wear something blue, his favorite color.

Michael Ray George, 59

A memorial service for Michael Ray George, 59, of West Fargo, N.D., and formerly of Sisseton, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Sisseton. There will be visitation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Cahill Funeral Chapel. The family will be present from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be visitation on Saturday one hour prior to services at the church. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, is in charge of arrangements.

Michael passed away on Dec. 21, 2008, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Thelma Myers

Thelma Myers, of Pierre, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at Maryhouse Nursing Care Center in Pierre.

Graveside services are 1:30 p.m., today, at Riverside Cemetery.

Thelma was born in Sully County to Fred and Lula Hayes. She attended schools in the Draper and Murdo area.

She was united in marriage to Harold Myers of Murdo. They were blessed with three sons. The family lived in Murdo until moving to Pierre, where they lived for several years. They later moved to Mitchell, where they owned and operated Myers Body Shop for several years. After they retired they moved back to Pierre, where Thelma lived until her death.

Thelma was a member of the church of the Nazarene in Mitchell, the Pierre Senior Citizen Center, American Legion Auxiliary and Countryside Hospice Inc.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Loyola Myers, of Avon; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; one step-sister, Irene Caldwell, of Pierre; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Dietzel, of Mishawaka, Ind.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; Harold’s relatives; and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; three sons: Merritt, Dale and Beverly; two sisters: Ellen Strunk and Daisy Hathaway; one brother, Lawerence Hayes; her parents; step-sister Helen Caldwell; daughter-in-law Beverly Myers and one great-grandson, Scott DeGroot.

Patricia Seagren, 70

Patricia “Pat” Seagren, 70, of Pierre, formerly of Miller, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller. The family will be present for visitation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., today, at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence. Burial will be 1:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 2, at the Thabor Lutheran Cemetery at Wausau, Neb. Friends may sign Patricia’s online register at www.remboldfuneralhome.com.

Patricia Marie Schlueter was born Oct. 4, 1938, to Lee and MaDonna (Saxton) Schlueter at Stuart, Neb. Pat grew up on a ranch south of Wood Lake, Neb. She attended grade school in a one-room country school, finishing middle and high school in Ainsworth, Neb.

Pat graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1960. While at the university, she was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, a member of the Cornhusker band, and was an Aksarben Countess.

On Aug. 14, 1960, Pat married Charles Seagren at the Congregational Church of Christ, Ainsworth, Neb. They moved to Stillwater, Okla., while Charlie attended Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation in May 1964, Pat and Charlie moved to Miller.

Pat was a housewife, taking very good care of her family. She was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Hand County Extension Club, Hand County Cancer Society, PEO, two bridge clubs and pitch club. She was also a Good Samaritan board member, 4-H leader, and a music parent. Pat was an avid Nebraska Cornhuskers fan. She also enjoyed baking, cross stitching, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.

Pat is survived by her husband, Charles, of Pierre; two daughters, Chris (Larry) Boever of Brookings, Cathy (Todd) Alley of Lincoln, Neb.; one son, Jon (Janelle) Seagren of Oakland, Neb.; eight grandchildren, Nate and Patrick Boever, Anne and Carly Alley, Garrett, Wyatt, Grant and Gretchen Seagren; one sister, Donna (Kenneth) Marlatt, of Wood Lake, Neb.; four brothers-in-law, Malvern (Jane) Seagren, Ralph Westadt, Robert (Deane) Seagren, and Gary Seagren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, mother- and father-in-law, Melville and Margaret Seagren, and one sister-in-law, Norma Westadt.

Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence has been entrusted with Patricia’s arrangements.

Oscar Hoffman, 92

Oscar Hoffman, 92, of Harrold, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at the Highmore Healthcare Center.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., today, at the Harrold Auditorium, Harrold with the Rev. Brian Lemcke officiating. Burial will be in the Medicine Hill Cemetery, Harrold. Visitation and a prayer service were held Sunday at Luze Funeral Home in Highmore.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Oscar’s arrangements.

Dorothy H. Marshall, 85

Dorothy H. Marshall, 85, of Draper, died Saturday, Dec. 27, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Draper Methodist Church. A prayer service will follow at 7 p.m., at the church

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the Draper Methodist Church. Burial will be at Draper Cemetery, followed by a lunch at the Draper Auditorium.

Dorothy H. Gropper was born Dec. 12, 1923, to Ernest and Helen (Broecher) Gropper. She grew up in the Jones County area and graduated from Draper High School in 1942.

Dorothy married O.W. “Dub” Marshall June 10, 1942. They were married 43 years. Dub died in 1985.

She was a part of the Prairie Home Ladies for more than 60 years, she enjoyed playing cards, especially 500. She loved reading, music and mastering puzzles.

She belonged to the Murdo and Pierre Senior Citizens.

She is survived by her children: Beverly (Ted) Nies, Dorothy (Larry) Koth, Bill (Jeanette) Marshall and Lee (Paula) Marshall; her brother, Nels Paulson; her sister, Francis Bennett; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dub, her parents, one brother, Jack, one sister, Marjorie, and one great-granddaughter, Samantha.

Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church of Draper.

Jo Heuertz, 53

Jo Heuertz, 53, of Pierre, died Sunday, Jan. 11, at her home.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Isburg Funeral Chapel with prayer service at 7 p.m. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Faith Lutheran Church with burial at Scotty Philip Cemetery.

Jo was born Feb. 28, 1955, in Murdo, to Bernard and Lois (Worcester) Jaide. She grew up in Murdo, where she attended school.

She worked for a trucking company in Le Mars, Iowa, as a bookkeeper. She then went to work for Wells Blue Bunny before moving to Pierre in 2006, where she managed KFC/Taco Bell.

When her kids were younger she enjoyed helping them show horses. Jo especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Jo is survived by two sons: Travis and wife Juliane, of Pierre, and Trent and wife Tiffany, of Webster; one daughter, Tobi; husband John Pickett, of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren: Natalie, Ely and Caleb; her mother, Lois Jaide, of Murdo; and one sister, Anita Hall, of Sioux Falls.

She was preceded in death by her father, grandson, Brendan, and brother, Kenny.

Kathryn Kozel, 90

Kathryn Kozel, 90, Pierre, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at Golden Living Center, in Pierre. Funeral service will be Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Feigum-VanLith Funeral Home, in Pierre. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, in Pierre. Online register book can be found at www.feigumvanlith.com.

Kathryn Smith was born March 29, 1918, in Pierre, to William and Minnie (Schloemer) Smith. Kathryn lived her entire life in Pierre. She was united in marriage with Robert Kozel, Jan. 7, 1938, in Pierre. Kathryn was a devoted wife and mother and spent her time caring for her family. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, cooking, crocheting and embroidery.

Kathryn is survived by her husband, Robert, of Pierre; one daughter, Roberta Frasch, and her husband, Eugene, of Pasco, Wash.; two grandchildren: Barbara Stewart and her husband, Dan, of Cornelius, Ore., and Deborah Richardson and her husband, Kenny, of Spokane, Wash.; three great-grandchildren: Megan Bailey, Jason Stewart, and Kyle Richardson; two brothers: Sam Smith, of Pierre and Hugo Smith, of Pierre; one sister, Mary Vincent, and her husband, Dale, of Pierre.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Louise Brumbaugh.

Ruth Hill Fugitt, 85

Ruth Hill Fugitt died Jan. 10, 2009, at her residence. She was born Oct. 5, 1923, at Rancagua, Chile, South America, to Fred H. and Creta M. Hill, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy B. Fugitt Jr.; son, James G. Fugitt; brother, Harry W. Hill; and sister, Mary L. Roberts.

Ruth was a member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder and an active member of Presbyterian Women. She was a longtime member of Chapter BF PEO. In 1971, Ruth was instrumental in the founding of Mobile Meals of Oklahoma County and continued to participate in the meals program until just days before her death. Although she was a 40-year resident of Oklahoma, her first love was to her beloved Kansas and especially the Jayhawks.

She is survived by son, LeRoy B. Fugitt III, and wife Shirleen, of Pierre; daughter, Susan Rozelle, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and son, Andy Fugitt, and wife Teresa, of Edmond, Okla. Ruth was a devoted grandmother, (affectionately known as “Memo”), to 12 grandchildren: Jane, Jeff, and Jill Fugitt, Sherry Sullivan, Patty Fugitt of Lawrence, Kan., Jason Fugitt, Sarah Kempke, Joel Morris, Emily Jarboe, Abby Dickey, and Austin and Duncan Fugitt, and 14 great-grandchildren (soon to be 15). She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Winifred and Alfred Gallup, of Lawrence, Kan.; cousin, Mary Lee Austin, and her husband, Jim, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; several nieces and nephews and their extended families; her loving Calvin Presbyterian friends; and her devoted dog, Biscuit.

The family will receive visitors from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Calvin Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Calvin Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Mobile Meals of Oklahoma County (6051 N. Brookline, Ste. 123, Oklahoma City, OK, 73112) or Presbyterian Urban Mission (3737 N. Portland, Oklahoma City, 73112).

Cecelia Hinckley, 85

Cecelia Matilda (Moran) Hinckley, 85, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center in Pierre. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Feigum-VanLith Funeral Home, Pierre. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Maryhouse Chapel, in Pierre. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, in Blunt.

Cecelia was born to Emma and James Moran, Feb. 12, 1923, and grew up in the Geddes/Delmont/Armour area of South Dakota. In February 1944, she married Dwight Everett Hinckley and the couple farmed around Armour.

In 1955, the family moved to Blunt, where Cecelia continued to raise her own family as well as many other children in the community. Many adults will recall learning their alphabet and how to color from Grandma Hinckley at her daycare.

Cecelia loved to cook and spent many years working at the Chuckwagon Café. Gardening was one of Cecelia’s enjoyments and she was always willing to share the produce she grew; many a pie was baked from the apple tree in her back yard.

Her children remember her as someone who was always there when they needed her; a kind, caring person who put her family before all else.

Grateful for sharing her life were her eight children: Sandra Hinckley, James (Lauralea) Hinckley, of Blunt; Andrea (Neal) Spaid, of Blunt; Patricia (Butch) Dowling, of Belle Fourche; Pamela (Laurna) Davis, of Cookson, Okla.; Mark (JoAnne) Hinckley, of Marshall, Minn.; Tamera Garrity, Sioux Falls; and Michael Hinckley; 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Cecelia was preceded in death by her husband, two children (Sandra and Michael), and one great-grandchild (DaShawn).

David Ryan, 46

David Ryan, 46, Pierre, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at Maryhouse TCU, in Pierre. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, with a 7 p.m. scripture wake service at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Pierre. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Fort Pierre. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Pierre.

George David Ryan was born March 1, 1962, in Sioux Falls, to George Joseph and Muriel (Rueter) Ryan. They lived in Beresford and Mitchell before moving to Pierre in 1971. David attended St. Joseph Catholic School and Pierre Public Schools, graduating from Riggs High School in 1980. While in high school, David was active in football and basketball. David graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.

He returned to Pierre and worked for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Water Resource Assistance Program. David worked on many rural water and wastewater projects and most recently the Lewis and Clark Water Project. David continued to work for DENR until his death.

David was united in marriage to Cynthia Sack on Sept. 19, 1993, in Fort Pierre.

David was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Pierre and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Little Flower Chapter in Fort Pierre.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and camping. David also enjoyed cooking for family and friends and was an excellent Dutch Oven cook. Sports were a constant in David’s life and he especially enjoyed watching his children play basketball, baseball and soccer.

David is survived by his wife, Cindy; one son, Connor; one daughter, Chloe; his mother, Muriel, all of Pierre; one brother, John (Stacie), of Carroll, Iowa; two sisters, Susan (Kent) Woodmansey, of Pierre, Cathy (Kyle) Boetel, of Aurora, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his father, George Joseph, and three brothers, Rick, Bob and D. Wayne.

Luella Nagel, 71

Luella Nagel, 71, of Pierre, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at St. Mary’s TCU. A private family memorial service will be held later this spring.

Isburg Funeral Chapel of Pierre has been placed in care of the arrangements.

Luella Purkapile was born June 15, 1937, in Pierre, to Vernon and Emma Purkapile. She grew up in Pierre. She worked as a secretary for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks for a number of years until retirement. She lived her life in Pierre; the house she lived in at the time of her death is next door to the house she grew up in.

Luella will be remembered as devoted to her children and family, true to her friends, and loyal to her employers.

She is survived by her daughter, Lauren (Steve) Laird, of Pierre; her son, Dallas (Tammy) Vavra, of Fort Pierre; and two brothers: Larry Purkapile and Ron (Rhonda) Purkapile, both of Pierre. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Shari Vavra-Bowers, and two grandsons, Juston Bowers and David Vavra.
