Senavella "Sena" Bauer
Farming took priority in Senavella "Sena" Bauer's life. She grew up on a farm, married a farmer and spent about all but the last six years of her life on farms near Herreid. On those farms were horses and how Sena loved them!
Every chance she had she would get on her horse for a ride. If there were any horse events in the area, Sena was there. When her daughter Nola was in riding events, there was Sena, taking pride in the trophies Nola won. The 4-H horse events at the State Fair always had Sena in the crowd.
Sena was "cut out" to be a farmer's wife. She loved to cook and entertain, especially on holidays when she could pack the house with guests and set them down to a table nearly sagging under the weight of the big dinners she cooked. To her, visiting was such fun.
For about the last six years Sena had been a resident in an assisted living home in Herreid, where reading, TV, cards and visiting filled her hours.
She died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital at the age of 81.
"She was a happy, wonderful person," her daughter-in-law Sandy Bauer said of her.
Sena was born June 2, 1923, in Broadus, Mont., to Adam J. and Eva (Schmidt) Berndt. In 1924 the family moved to South Dakota and she grew up on a farm seven miles southeast of Herreid. She attended the rural Burke School, then remained on the farm until her marriage to Godfred Bauer on Oct. 28, 1941. They were married at her parents' home in Herreid.
In the 1960s they moved again to the John Wessel farm 10 miles southeast of Herreid. They moved west of Herreid in 1974, then again to the Wessel farm southeast of Herreid in 1987.
Sena in survived by two sons, Carter Bauer and his wife Sandra "Sandy" of Mound City, and Terry Bauer of Anchorage, Alaska; one daughter, Nola Bauer of Mound City; two grandchildren, Chad and Pamela; and three great-grandchildren, Kay Lynn, Tracey and Jamison.
