Bob Tombollo was born May 15, 1945 in Cherokee, IA. He grew up there. Following high school graduation, Bob served in the United States Navy. After his discharge he earned a business degree at Sioux Falls College.

Bob began employment with Western Airlines in 1967. He continued with the company after it was acquired by Delta Airlines. He retired in December of 2001 after 34 years of service. In retirement Bob enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends.

Grateful for having shared his life are one daughter, Sarah Tedesco and her husband, John, Tampa, FL; one grandson, Nicholas Tedesco, Tampa, FL; one sister, Rose Prentice, Oklahoma City, OK; two nephews, Mike Prentice, Steve Prentice; one niece, Jennifer Whitacre; his special friends, Les and Linda Blitch-Noonan and family, Lennox, SD, Jim and Bea Maxwell and family, Ellsworth, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for food and fellowship at First English Lutheran Church in Lennox following the committal service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Children’s Home Society, 801 N. Sycamore Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57110.

Samuel Gordon Lonning, son of Samuel and Fannie (Contrill) Lonning, was born on July 21, 1930 in Glendive, MT. He attended Kemper Military Academy in Boonesville, MO and graduated from high school in Glendive, MT. Following high school Sam played college football for Montana State and Rocky Mountain College in Montana.

Sam was united in marriage with Vashti Piechouski on July 17, 1955 in Fergus Falls, MN. Sam began his military career with the United States Army in 1957. He served in Korea and in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant major in 1978. In 1975 Sam returned to college at Columbia (MO) College where he received his bachelor’s degree.

Sam was a sports enthusiast and also loved the outdoors. He was a life member of John M. Bliss V.F.W. Post #628, Sioux Falls.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Vashti Lonning, Sioux Falls, SD; his daughter, Becky Jandl and her husband, David, Worthing, SD; and four grandchildren, Jackie and Tracy Lonning and Jaimee and Brady Jandl.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at George Boom Funeral Home following the committal service.

Joe J. Kucler
Died: Mar 15, 2003

Sioux Falls - Joe J. Kucler, 87, 2501 S. Sherman Avenue, died Saturday, March 15, 2003 at Royal C. Johnson Veteran’s Hospital. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date, with George Boom Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Joe was born the son of Andrew and Johanna (Vorhonic) Kucler on February 26, 1916 in Eveleth, MN. After graduating from Eveleth High School he turned down athletic scholarship offers from the Universities of Minnesota and Wisconsin to play amateur hockey for Minomonie, MN, Toledo, OH, and Eveleth, MN. In 1942, Joe joined the U.S. Coast Guard with his life long friend John Mariuchi. They were stationed at Baltimore and played hockey for the Coast Guard Cutters – the Baltimore entry in the Eastern Hockey League. They played Boston, Philidelphia, and New York in “The Garden”. Joe led the league in scoring, was a member of the All Star Team, and helped Baltimore win the league championship in 1942-43 and again in 1943-44. Joe shipped out in 1944 aboard the USS Mohave, a north Atlantic merchant marine escort ship and submarine chaser. He served aboard ship and in Greenland for the duration of the war. Joe was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Machinist 1st class. After the war Joe played hockey briefly for the New York Rangers minor league team in Baltimore until a knee injury prevented him from taking up the National Hockey League team’s invitation for a tryout.

With his hockey career over, Joe attended and graduated from watchmakers school in Kansas City and was united in marriage with Mary York on August 15, 1949. The couple moved to Sioux Falls where Joe worked as a watchmaker for Smith Jewelry until retiring in 1971. During their years in Sioux Falls, Joe and Mary also operated Kucler Food Concessions, serving a variety of events in Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and Watertown. Joe spent countless hours teaching young people to skate at Covell Lake. He also enjoyed golfing In 1996, he was honored by the Baltimore Clippers as one of the six living members of the outstanding 1942-43; 1943-44 Coast Guard hockey team.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Shirley (White) and her husband Spencer Peterson, Corvallis, OR; a grandson, Scott Peterson, Portland, OR; a granddaughter Sheila, her husband Charles Pederson, and an 8 month old great-grandson Spencer Thomas, Anniston, AL; two brothers, Andrew and Angie Kucler , and Albin and Frances, both in OH.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Tony, Leo, Bill, and Rudy; and 1 sister, Francis Hautala.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Winter Sports Department, 600 East 7th Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57103 in honor of Joe Kucler.

Hermina Woltjer, daughter of Elso and Gertrude (Popkes) Woltjer, was born September 26, 1914 at Ellsworth, MN. She grew up and received her education in the Adrian, MN area.

Hermina was united in marriage with Fred Muller on November 21, 1935 at Sioux Falls, SD. The couple farmed in the Worthington, MN area until moving to Sioux Falls in 1959. Hermina began working at Sioux Falls Towel and Linen where she worked for 30 years.

She was a member of East Side Presbyterian Church, Ladies of the Moose Lodge, and the Golden Age Club.

Grateful for having shared her life are her brother, Joe Woltjer, Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters, Bena Vrootman, Paradise, CA, Clara Honermann, Corvallis, OR; and several nieces and nephews.

Hermina was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, on April 13, 1991; her son, Edward; her parents; and five sisters.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at East Side Presbyterian Church immediately following the funeral service and prior to the committal service at Garden of Memories in Worthington.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Good Samaritan Center Building Fund.

Elaine M. O’Connor, daughter of Herbert and Mae (Gloster) O’Connor, was born May 10, 1911 at Detroit, MI. At age eight, Elaine moved with her family to Duluth, MN where she grew up and received her education. She then began teaching country school in remote areas of St. Louis County in the Duluth area.

Elaine was united in marriage with Joseph P. Borich on November 28, 1942 at Duluth. Following their marriage, the couple farmed for a short time. They moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1954. She taught school at St. Joseph Cathedral for 19 years, retiring in 1979.

She was a member of St. Lambert Catholic Church, the Renew Bible Study Group, and a member of the Cathedral Club for many years. Elaine was an avid Democrat and enjoyed working the polling sites for many years. She loved to read and write letters. She also enjoyed walking and gardening.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two sons, Joseph Borich, Jr. and his wife, Hsiao-hui, Seattle, WA, Timothy Borich and his wife, Jeanette, Ames, IA; two daughters, Clare Becker and her husband, Edward, Sioux Falls, SD, Marty Baxter and her husband, Pat, Sioux Falls, SD; 10 grandchildren, Stephanie Smith and her husband, Brad, J. Zachary and Grace Borich, Molly Yunkers and her husband, Ryan, Emily, Thomas and Katie Baxter, Genevieve, Anthony and Jean Marie Borich; three great-grandchildren, RaeAnne, Danielle and Brett Smith; one brother, Herbert O’Connor, Golden Valley, MN; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, on December 4, 1995; and her parents.

Gloria G. Gould, daughter of Ralph and Florence (Street) Gould, was born August 23, 1942 in Omaha, NE. She grew up and received her education in Omaha. She then attended John Brown University and Augustana College. Following college, Gloria made her home in Sioux Falls where she managed Walden Books at the Empire Mall for 28 years.

Gloria was an avid reader. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. Gloria was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sioux Falls.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Stephanie Teunissen and her husband, Randy, Alvord, IA; her son, Bryan Cox and his wife, Linda, Estelline, SD; six grandchildren, Cody, Samantha, and Lucas Teunissen, Jacob, Laura, and Sarah Cox; two nieces, Jana Brueggemann and her husband, Michael, Omaha, NE, Jennifer Thurman, Omaha, NE; one great-niece and two great-nephews, William, Elizabeth, and Timothy Brueggemann; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Lester Hall, son of Emanuel and Sarah (Cornett) Hall, was born September 8, 1916 in Perry County near Viper, KY. In the late 1930’s he worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Harlan County near Path Fork, KY for three years. In 1942, Les joined the United States Air Force and was transferred to the Mitchell, SD airbase. During his tour of duty, Les served at Iwo Jima and participated in the invasion of Okinawa during World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant in 1946.

Les was united in marriage with Elsa Winter on March 28, 1943 in Parkston, SD. After the war, the couple moved to Sioux Falls, SD where Les worked for John Morrell & Company until retiring on September 30, 1981.

Les had many interests, but particularly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, working in his garden, watching baseball games on television, birdhouses, and flowers.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Elsa Hall, Sioux Falls, SD; one son, Donald Hall and his wife, Karen, Sioux Falls, SD; one daughter, Connie Ideker and her husband, Bernie, Sioux Falls, SD; two granddaughters, Stephanie and Rebecca Ideker; two grandsons, Kellen and Ryan Hall; one brother, Hager Hall and his wife, Jean, Lexington, KY; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Les was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Estill, Boyd, William, and Edgar; and three sisters, Mary Tackett, Sudie Baker, and Vidie Eckles.
