Marvin Van Zee, 76
November 25, 1930 - October 9, 2007
Funeral services for Marvin Van Zee were held Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, at 10 a.m. at the Platte Christian Reformed Church with a Committal Service following at the Platte City Cemetery.
The Platte Funeral Chapel assisted with arrangements.
Marvin Van Zee was born November 25, 1930, to Fred and Wyna (Keuning) Van Zee. He attended school in New Holland. As a young man, he drove school bus for New Holland Christian School and also worked at Overweg Grocery.
On November 24, 1950, he married Darlene Breukelman in Platte where they spent the next 57 years together. He purchased his first truck when he was 17 years old and continued in the trucking business until he retired at the age of 64.
He died Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. He attained the age of 76 years.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene; children, Ron Van Zee and wife, Jan, parents of Kendra Van Hill, husband Rob, and sons, Connor and Jaden, Brian Van Zee, Ken Van Zee and wife, Nancy, parents of Matt Van Zee, Heather Anema, husband, Evan, Eric Van Zee, Keith Van Zee and wife, Renita, parents of Ross Van Zee, fiance Joni Meyerink and daughter, Cadence, Jenna Veurink and husband, Josh, Janie Van Zee, Doug Van Zee and wife, Brenda, parents of Chelsea Van Zee, Preston Van Zee, Megan Van Zee, Cyndee VanDerPol and husband, Dave, parents of Farrah Dyk, husband Travis, Paige VanDerPol, Taryn VanDerPol, Bob Van Zee and wife, Karen, parents of Morgan, Parker, Brooklyn and Cole Van Zee; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Jeanette Van Zee; sister, Juna Mae Van Zee; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Alvin and Mary Breukelman and Marlene Breukelman; his stepbrother and stepsister, Adrian Hansum and Gert Timmer; and several nieces and nephews.

Ella Hattendorf, 91
Died January 17, 2008
Funeral services for Ella Hattendorf were held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Forest Hills Funeral Chapel in Palm City, Fla.
Ella was born in Tripp and lived in Jensen Beach since 1972. She was a life-long educator, graduating from Augustana College, Sioux Falls.
She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Stuart, Fla.
She died on January 17 at Tiffany Hall in Port St. Lucie, Fla. She attained the age of 91 years.
Survivors include a sister, Esther Schaefer, Mason City, Iowa; and 10 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W.E. (Pete) Hattendorf in 1995; sisters, Marie and Ema; and brothers, John and Gus.

Hazel (Zulk) Gosmire, 79
August 14, 1928 - January 17, 2008
Funeral services for Hazel Lois Gosmire were held Saturday, January 19, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Canova, with Pastor Brad Petersen officiating. Music was furnished by the congregation and Kathy Wahl, organist.
Interment was made in the Canova Cemetery with Willoughby Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Honorary casketbearers were Brittany Sattler, Megan Sattler, Kelli Steffen, Shelby Hohn, Sutton Hohn and Kaytlin Adams. Casketbearers were Jason Gosmire, Josh Adams, Justin Adams, Marshal Gosmire, Myles Gosmire, Casie Sattler, Molly Gosmire and Kristen Steffen.
Hazel Lois Zulk was born August 14, 1928, to William and Amalia (Graese) Zulk at Canova.
She was united in marriage to Virgil Gosmire on January 18, 1950. The couple farmed and lived their married life near Canova. She worked at the Canova Retirement Home for over 20 years. During World War II, she worked at John Morrels. She met Virgil while waitressing in the Cafe.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Jolly Dozen Extension Club, and Canova Legion Auxiliary.
She died Thursday, Jan. 17, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, Mitchell. She attained the age of 79 years.
She is survived by her husband, Virgil, Mitchell; daughters, Barbara Adams, Mitchell, Dona (Ron) Steffen, White Lake, Sue (Duane) Sattler, Lincoln, Neb., Diane Gilbertz (Mike), White Lake, and Bonnie (Mark) Hohn, Dimock; one son, Ray (Doreen), Mitchell; sister, Lois Lundberg, Sioux Falls; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Alice Jacobsen, Delma Anderson, Lorna Martin; an infant sister, Arlene; and three brothers, Adolph, Willmar and Robert.

Dennis Liebert, 55
December 2, 1952 - January 1, 2008
Funeral services for Dennis Liebert were held Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary Chapel, Wichita, Kan., with Pastor David Larson of Martinson Avenue Christian Church, Wichita, officiating.
Interment was made in the Kechi Township Cemetery, Kechi, Kan., with Culbertson-Smith Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Dakota Morton, Russell McCallister, Nick McCallister, Shane Velazquez, Brandon Jimenez, and Arthur Albrecht.
Dennis Liebert was born December 2, 1952, to Ruben and Emma (Guthmiller) Liebert at Parkston. He attended various schools and graduated from Derby High School, Derby, Kan. He worked as a LPN where he met his wife, Judy, and they were married in 1985. In 1989 he began work at Beech/Raytheon as a machinist. His career as a machinist ended in 2003 due to disabling health problems.
He died on Tuesday, Jan. 1, at his home in Goddard, Kan., at the age of 55 years.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; his mother, Emma Liebert, Lake Havasu, Ariz.; daughter, Misty Walter, Haysville, Kan., son, Cory Carrell, Augusta, Kan.; two brothers, Darrel, Mountain Home, Idaho, and Doug, Des Moines, Iowa; four stepdaughters, Wendy Enlow, Killeen, Texas, Tracy Velazquez and Wallace and Jennifer Storm, all of Wichita, Kan., and April McCallister, Goddard, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ruben; grandparents, Emanuel and Helena Guthmiller; and many aunts and uncles.

Margaret (Nolz) Appel, 90
July 1, 1917 - January 14, 2008
Funeral services for Margaret Appel were held Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Dimock, with the Fr. Joseph Thalanany officiating. Music was furnished by Danielle McCann, organist.
Interment was made in the church cemetery with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Greg Schoenfelder, Kyle Boehmer, Bryan Schoenfelder, Grant Schoenfelder, Gary Schoenfelder and Tom Schoenfelder.
Margaret Appel was born July 1, 1917, to Matthias and Magdalena (Loos) Nolz on the family farm near Parkston. She attended country school through the eighth grade.
She was united in marriage on November 11, 1935, to August Schoenfelder near Parkston. August died in 1965. She married Michael Appel on October 13, 1965, at Dimock. Mike died in 1984.
She was an active member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was actively involved in the VFW, Hospice volunteer and organized many blood drives in Parkston.
She died Monday, Jan. 14, at Avera St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston at the age of 90 years.
She is survived by four children, Geneva Pringle, Simi Valley, Calif., Gerald Schoenfelder and wife, Gloria, Dimock, Thomas Schoenfelder, St. Joseph, Minn., and William Schoenfelder, Sioux Falls; a daughter-in-law, Glennys Bumgarter, Fulton; 17 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, August and Michael; son, James Schoenfelder; two daughters-in-law, Eileen and Cindy; son-in-law, Wilbert Pringle; three brothers; and six sisters.

Robert Weber, 74
February 18, 1933 - January 16, 2008
Funeral services for Robert “Bob” F. Weber were held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Parkston, with Fr. Paul Josten officiating. Music was furnished by Sarah Neugebauer, soloist, and Bonna McGregor, organist.
Interment was made in the church cemetery with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Dave Thury, Jim Walz, Dan Weiss, Ron Thury, Steve Walz and Kevin Carlson.
Robert “Bob” F. Weber was born February 18, 1933, to Joseph A. and Rose (Weber) Weber at Dimock. He attended school in Dimock through the eighth grade. He entered the United States Army on November 10, 1953, and served overseas until being discharged on October 13, 1955.
He was united in marriage to Arlys Degen on November 26, 1957, at Parkston. He farmed east of Dimock for nine years. During this same time, he also worked for Untereiners Lumber and sold insurance for Laber and Walz Insurance in Dimock. He moved to Sioux Falls and received his GED from Washington High School and promptly began working for Highland Potato Chip Co. in 1966, retiring in 1986.
He died Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, at the age of 74 years.
He is survived by his wife, Arlys, Sioux Falls; two children, Jolene West and husband, Duane, Sioux Falls, and Glenn Weber and wife, Shelli, San Diego, Calif.; five grandchildren, Stacy West, Sioux Falls, Katherine West and fiancee, Russell White, Sioux Falls, and Ashley, Alexis and Megan Weber, all of San Diego; three great-grandchildren, MacKenzie West, Alyssa West and Quinten West; a brother, Joe F. Weber, Parkston; and five sisters, Lois Thury and husband, Clarence, Parkston, Johanna Weiss, Mitchell, Joan Smith and husband, Al, Gustine, Calif., Charlotte Weiger, Piedmont, and Rose Walz and husband, Ken, Parkston.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Betty.

Edna (Semmler) Stoebner, 86
May 19, 1921 - May 6, 2008
Funeral services for Edna Stoebner were held Friday, May 9, 2008, at 1:30 p.m., at Friedens Reformed Church, Tripp, with the Rev. Greg Way officiating. Music was furnished by the congregation, Lennis Mehlhaff, soloist, and Shelly Finck, organist.
Interment was made in the Friedens Reformed Cemetery with Goglin Funeral Home, Tripp, in charge of arrangements. Honorary casketbearers were her great-grandchildren. Casketbearers were David Stoebner, Todd Weisser, Tim Hein, Leo Gannon, Leo Semmler and George Semmler.
Edna (Semmler) Stoebner was born Thursday, May 19, 1921, in Douglas County, east of Corsica, to Fred W. and Christina (Schmierer) Semmler.
She married Ruben E. Stoebner on September 16, 1941. They farmed west of Tripp for 45 years before moving to Tripp. She resided in Tripp for 19 years before moving to the Armour Nursing Home on April 17, 2006. She was a member of the Friedens Reformed Church of Christ.
She died on Tuesday, May 6, at the Golden Living Center in Armour at the age of 86 years, 11 months, and 17 days.
She is survived by one son, Dennis and wife, Edna Stoebner, Aberdeen; one daughter, Judy and husband, Darold Weisser, Armour; four grandchildren, David (Heidee) Stoebner, Todd (Shirlyce) Weisser, Tammy (Tim) Hein and Lynn (Leo) Gannon; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ruben Semmler, Parkston; two sisters, Rose Helle, Mitchell, and Martha Esau, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben, on November 27, 2001; parents, Fred and Christina Semmler; five brothers, Rudolph, Bernhard, Emanuel, Gottfried and Art; and three sisters, Alvina Mahoney, Amanda Semmler and Adeline Young.

Leota (Semmler) Schultz, 84
February 19, 1924 - May 7, 2008
Funeral services for Leota Marie Schultz were held Saturday, May 10, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church, Parkston, with the Rev. Constanze Hagmaier officiating. Music was furnished by Paul, Todd and Tia Krier, trio, and Betty Marshall, organist.
Interment was made in the Greenhill Cemetery, Alexandria, with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Paul Krier, Greg Stern, Larry Schultz, Todd Krier, Curt Stern and Ron Schultz.
Leota Marie Schultz was born February 19, 1924, to Gustave and Marie (Semmler) Semmler on the family farm near Delmont. She attended grade school near Delmont through the eighth grade. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith near Delmont.
On April 22, 1945, she was united in marriage to Sanroe Stern near Delmont. Together they lived and farmed near Freeman and Delmont before purchasing a farm near Alexandria. Sanroe died February 22, 1970. Leota married Harley Schultz on February 11, 1974, at Luverne, Minn. Together they lived and farmed near Alexandria until 1984 when they moved to Parkston so she could care for her parents.
She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and the church Altar Guild.
She died Wednesday, May 7, at Avera St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston at the age of 84 years.
She is survived by her husband, Harley, Parkston; daughter, Beverly Krier and husband, Ron, Alexandria; five step-children, Ron Schultz and wife, Diane, Sioux Falls, Jolene Welker and husband, Bill, Sioux Falls, Larry Schultz and wife, Diane, Sioux Falls, Cheryl Wheeler and husband, Mike, Sioux Falls, and James Schultz, Waco, Texas; sister, Altha Mayer, Yankton; five grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Sanroe; two sons, Charles Stern and Timothy Stern, in infancy; and a grandson, Scott Krier.

Phyllis (Wuertzer) Liebenstein, 84
May 11, 1924 - September 6, 2008
Funeral services for Phyllis Lieb-enstein were held Saturday, Sept. 13, at 3 p.m. at Grand Ave. United Methodist Church, Port Washington, Wisc., with Pastor David Guse officiating.
Burial was made in the Union Cemetery, Port Washington, with Eernisse Funeral Home, Port Washington, in charge of arrangements.
Phyllis was born May 11, 1924, in Parkston to Ernest and Martha Fuerst Wuertzer. She graduated from Parkston High School and moved to Port Washington in 1943 and secured a secretarial position at Kieckhafer Corp. in Cedarburg.
On September 22, 1945, she married Edward C. Liebenstein. The couple farmed in the Town of Port Washington until moving to West Bend in 1995.
She was a member of Grand Ave. United Methodist Church in Port Washington where she was part of the Ladies Aid. She also sang in the church choir for many years.
She died Saturday, Sept. 6, at her residence. She attained the age of 84 years.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years; three daughters, Lynette Devine, Kennesaw, Ga., Sharon Laux and Shirley Henning, both of West Bend; two sons, Gerald (Dianne) Liebenstein, Norman, Ill., and Brian Liebenstein, Rockford, Ill.; six grandsons, Michael (Michelle) Liebenstein, Scott (Barbi) Henning, Kevin (Heather) Laux, Curtis Liebenstein, Eric and Kyle Henning; six granddaughters, Sara (George) Carter, Melissa (Ben) Doetch, Cheryl Laux, Aimee Liebenstein, Rebecca Henning and Dana Liebenstein; two great-grandsons, Caden and Grant Liebenstein; sister, Marcella Heitzman, Parkston; and two sisters-in-law, Lillian and Delores Wuertzer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Raymond, Norman, Louis and Donald Wuertzer; and one grandson, Jeffrey Devine.

Maurice Bowar, 59
December 20, 1948 - September 7, 2008
Maurice was born on December 20, 1948, in Parkston. He was the son of Clarence and Helen (Laber) Bowar. He grew up in Dimock. After graduating from South Dakota State University, he went on to teach math and coach wrestling in Iowa. He moved to Orange County, Calif., in 1979. He decided on a career change and obtained his land surveying license. He worked for the County of Orange as a surveyor.
He died Sunday, Sept. 7, after a courgeous battle with cancer. He attained the age of 59 years.
He is survived by his fiancee, Lisa Mac; her children, Valerie Quan, Thai Le, George Le, and Thahn Le; brothers, Al (Donna), Garretson, Myron (Joan), Moorhead, Minn.; sister, Amelia (Wayne) Stein, Aberdeen; 15 nieces and nephews; and Uncle Nick Laber, Parkston.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Roland Bowar; and one brother, Roman.
