Wilmer Wuertzer, 87
January 20, 1921 - September 6, 2008
Funeral services for Wilmer C. Wuertzer were held Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ, Parkston, with the Salem UCC Men’s Quarter and Mary Tiede, organist, providing the music.
Interment was made in the Milltown City Cemetery with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Bob Parish, Tom Parish, David Kost, Ned Adams, Bill Parish, Jerry Tiede, Orlyn Olfert and Kenneth Leischner.
Wilmer C. Wuertzer was born January 20, 1921, to Edward and Ida (Schuler) Wuertzer at Parkston.
He was married to Annetta Friederich of Tripp on September 5, 1943. They remained on the Wuertzer homestead farming and raising Registered Hereford cattle. He had been highly recognized by the South Dakota Hereford Association for his achievements and contributions.
After retiring in 1997, they moved to Parkston. On September 5 they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
He passed away on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston at the age of 87 years.
He is survived by his wife, Annette, Parkston; daughters, LaVonne Vinson, Arlington, Wash., Bonnie and husband, Bill Bevis, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; son, Stan Wuertzer and wife, Patricia, and their son, Andrew, Kirkland, Wash.; and a sister, Marlys Aspel, Darien, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a half-brother, Alton Wuertzer; and three half-sisters, Martha Tiede, Ida Leischner and Sadie Schmidt.

Jo Ann (Kusler) Reiner Johnson, 74
June 3, 1934 - November 27, 2008
Funeral services for Jo Ann June Reiner Johnson were held Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at 10 a.m., at McColley’s Chapel of the Hills in Custer with Pastor Bill Savery officiating, and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Friedens Reformed Church in Tripp with the Rev. Greg Way officiating.
Interment was made in the Friedens Reformed Cemetery in Tripp with McColley’s Chapel of the Hills in Custer in charge of arrangements.
Jo Ann was born June 3, 1934, in Scotland to Christian G. and Sarah Kraft (Kusler). She was educated in the Scotland Public Schools, graduating on May 22, 1952. Her Christian education was obtained through her family members and a local Christian Church.
On November 16, 1951, she was united in marriage with Arland M. Reiner in Tripp. Her husband was enlisted in the Armed Forces so the couple experienced a few moving adventures. Upon his honorable discharge, the couple moved to Lead where he was employed by the Homestake Mining Company. He died as a result of an automobile accident in the spring of 1956.
On June 25, 1957, she married Robert M. Johnson of Spencer. After moving to Custer they both worked for an Indepedent Telephone Company until purchasing the Harney Theatre in 1963. They sold the Theatre in 1984. She was a co-owner of Bob’s Sanitation and Septic System Service and the Chalet Souvenir and Jewelry Store.
She died Thursday, Nov. 27, at Custer Regional Hospital. She attained the age of 74 years.
She is survived by one daughter, Connie Baldwin, Pringle; two grandsons, Colin Christopher Baldwin (Elizabeth), Vacaville, Calif., Cory Christian Baldwin (Florencia), Salt Lake City, Utah; and one great grandson, Nicolas Baldwin, Salt Lake City, Utah

Esther (Saugstad) Flynn, 90
March 31, 1918 - November 28, 2008
Funeral services for Esther Elizabeth (Saugstad) Flynn were held Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., at Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene.
Burial was made in the Columkill Cemetery, rural Irene, with Hansen Funeral Home, Irene, in charge of arrangements.
Esther Flynn was born to Oliver and Ida (Lee) Saugstad on Easter Sunday, March 31, 1918, on the family farm southwest of Irene. She was baptized and confirmed at Trondhjem Lutheran Church. She attended country school at West Prairie for three years and continued to Lindbergh. She graduated from Irene High School in 1936. She worked at Gurneys in Yankton before marrying Donald Flynn on April 6, 1942, in Charlotte, N.C. She worked in Charlotte until Donald was shipped overseas later that year. She then returned to Irene to live with Donald’s parents until the end of the war. She worked at Dakota Industries in Irene, Hurley and Beresford for many years. She was a member of the Hall Thompson Legion Auxiliary for 62 years and carried the flag for many years. She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church of Irene.
She died Friday, Nov. 28, at Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Irene. She attained the age of 90 years.
She is survivedby her daughter, Mary Ellen (Dennis Sr.) Fischer, Tripp; son, James Flynn, Yankton; six grandchildren, Dennis (Sherry) Fischer Jr., Terry (Sheri) Fischer, Sherry (John) Friman, all of Tripp, Heather (Mike) Logue, Volin, Gabriel (Beth) Flynn, Irene, Georgilee Flynn, Yankton; 17 great-grandchildren, Brittany, Dustin and Cody Fischer, Patricia, Malorie and Dalton Fischer, Kelley and Morgan Ziegler and Jacey Friman, all of Tripp, Brady, Garrett, Evan, Nadia and Gianna Logue, Volin, Emerson and Quincey Flynn, Irene, Morgan Mason, Yankton; brother, Earl Saugstad, Yankton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her parents; one great-grandchild, William Logue in infancy; and five sisters, Myrtle Knox, Alice Thompson, Gladys Thompson, Inez Gravholt and Fern Larson.

John Weber, 79
June 4, 1029 - December 13, 2008
Funeral services for John C. Weber were held Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Dimock, with Fr. Joseph Thalanany officiating. Music was furnished by Heath Weber, soloist, and Kaitlyn Donahue, organist.
Interment was made in the church cemetery with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were John L. Weber, Charles Weber, Martin Weber, Cathy Carlson, Greg Weber and Angela Weber.
John C. Weber was born June 4, 1929, to John P. and Mary (Sommer) Weber on the family farm near Dimock. He grew up near Dimock and attended SS Peter and Paul Parochial School in Dimock through the eighth grade. He helped his parents on the farm until 1953 when he entered the United States Army and served in Korea until his discharge in 1955.
He was united in marriage to Selma Laber on May 2, 1959, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston. Together they lived and farmed near Dimock.
He was a member of the NFO, township board and Knights of Columbus.
He died Saturday, Dec. 13, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 79 years.
He is survived by his wife, Selma, Dimock; six children, John L. Weber, Mitchell, Cathy Carlson, Broomfield, Colo., Charles Weber and wife, Susan, Dimock, Greg Weber and wife, Carol, Parkston, Martin Weber, Dimock, and Angela Weber, Erie, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Jenna and Kayla Carlson, Katie and Kim Weber, Rebecca and Brianna Weber, and John Adam Weber; two sisters, Regina Steffen and husband, John G., Cedar Grove, Wis., and Doris Wermers, Sioux Falls; brother, Fran Weber and wife, Joan, Sioux Falls; and a brother-in-law, Laverne Locken, Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Louis Weber; sister, Mary Kathryn Locken; and a brother-in-law, Leo Wermers.

Phyllis Bick, 79
July 12, 1929 - December 11, 2008
Funeral services for Phyllis Bick were held Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at 2 p.m., at Will Funeral Chapel, Mitchell.
Burial was made in the Graceland Cemetery in Fulton with Will Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Phyllis Bick, daughter of Fred and Emma (Ness) Bick, was born July 12, 1929, in Miner County. She spent her youth with her mother. In 1971 she became a resident and made her home at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston.
She died Thursday, Dec. 11, at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston. She attained the age of 79 years.
She is survived by three sisters-in-laws, Margaret Bick, Mitchell, Glyde Bick, Mitchell, and Laural Bick, Englewood, Colo.; numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.

Dorothy (Boehmer) Zilverberg, 87
February 23, 1921 - December 2, 2008
A Mass of Christian burial for Dorothy Zilverberg was held Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Highmore, with Father Kevin Zilverberg and Father Paul Nereparmpil officiating. Music was furnished by the congregation, Victor Nemec, soloist, and Katherine Hieb, organist.
Interment was made in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemtery, Highmore.
Dorothy Catherine Boehmer was born February 23, 1921, in Hughes County to August and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Boehmer. After graduating from high school in Harrold she went on to Notre Dame Junior College in Mitchell where she earned a teaching certificate. During her teaching career, she taught at Grey Goose, Canning, and south of Harrold.
She married John Zilverberg February 17, 1945, in Highmore during military leave. Military service took them to Klamath Falls, Ore., where she continued to teach sixth grade. The couple was transferred to San Francisco, Calif., until the war ended October 1945.
After the war, they moved to a ranch north of Holabird. Her volunteer activities included holding state office with the S.D. Extension Homemakers and serving on the state and county boards. She held local offices in Cattlewomen, Catholic Daughters, Altar Society, Historical Society and belonged to the Retired Teachers Organization. In 1976 she represented Hyde County as Mother of the Year in the state competition. In 2003 she was honored to be inducted into the South Dakota 4-H Hall of Fame for 20 years of service as a 4-H leader. In 1989 they retired from the ranch and moved to Highmore.
She died Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Highmore Healthcare Center. She attained the age of 87 years.
She is survived by her husband, John Zilverberg; two daughters and two sons, Marcia (Mike) Wiedebush, Aberdeen, Donald (Peg) Zilverberg, Holabird, Karen (Ray) Geditz, Ipswich, and Gary (April) Zilverberg, Holabird; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marcella Auch.
She was preceded in death by her parents; twin brothers who died at birth; brother, Vincent Bollweg; and a sister, Evelyn Reding.

Bertha (Nolz) Ostbye, 67
January 6, 1942 - February 12. 2009
Funeral services for Bertha (Bert) Josephine Ostbye will be held Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Parkston. A prayer served will be held Sunday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m.
Bertha was born January 6, 1942, in Parkston, the daughter of Alois and Bernadine Nolz. She spent most of her life in Chamberlain. She also lived in Hartford, Hollywood, Fla., Parkston, and Brownsville, Texas.
She died Thursday, Feb. 12, at MD Anderson Cancer Center following a four-and-a-half year battle with Lymphoma. She attained the age of 67 years.
She is survived by five children and 12 grandchildren: Lisa Ostbye (Eric Johnson), Camden and Jaeden Johnson, Omaha, Neb., Brad Ostbye (Cindi), Olivia and Ryley, Canton, Mike Ostbye (Kim), Caitlin and Colby, Mitchell, Cathy Ostbye, Joey, Alexis and Mia, Sioux Falls, and Vicki Deans (Mike), Noah, Kyler, and Aiden, Brownsville, Texas; and six sisters and nine brothers.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Bernadine; father, Alois Nolz; and son, Dale Nolz.
The family requests that no flowers be sent.

Erna (Kreth) Scheetz, 95
September 7, 1913 - February 13, 2009
Funeral services for Erna Hildeguard Scheetz were held Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at 10:30 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, Parkston, with the Rev. Kenneth Soyk officiating. Music was furnished by Lynette Konrad, organist.
Interment was made in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Dimock, with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were DelRay Geidel, Royce Bialas, Ernest Scheetz, Kenneth Jahr, Loren Geidel, David Scheetz Jr., Ronald Heidinger Jr. and Michael Scheetz.
Erna Hildeguard Scheetz was born September 7, 1913, to Ernest and Emma (Sperlich) Kreth on the family homestead near Mt. Vernon. She was baptized on November 16, 1913, and confirmed on March 6, 1928, by Rev. Tecklenburg at St. John Lutheran Church, Hillside. She attended Baker #10 School through the eighth grade after which she stayed home to help her mother with the household chores and the younger children.
On March 29, 1933, she was united in marriage to Edward Christen Scheetz. They lived and farmed south of Mt. Vernon until 1977 when they retired and moved into Parkston.
She was a lifelong member of LWML, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and served in Farmers Unions as an educator and other capacities for over 50 yeas.
She died Friday, Feb. 13, at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston at the age of 95 years.
She is survived by her children, Dorothea Giedel, Mitchell, Gladys Geidel and husband, Donald, Dimock, David Scheetz and wife, Beverly, Parkston, Lois Bialas and husband, Lambert, Dimock, Dwain Scheetz and wife, Kathryn, Mt. Vernon, Gary Scheetz, Parkston, and Marilyn Castillo, Parkston; two daughters-in-law, Margaret Scheetz and Elvina Maiden, Mitchell; son-in-law, Alvin Geidel, Mitchell; 38 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bernard Kreth and wife, Eileen, Mitchell, and LuVern Kreth, Mt. Vernon; and a sister, Gladys Ziebart, Parkston.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Katherine Heidinger; two sons, Marvin and Harlan Scheetz; two great-grandchildren; brother, Ernest Kreth; a sister, Valindy Mehlhaff; three half-brothers, John, Otto and Ewald Burmeister; and two half-sisters, Alma Kluth and Alvina Gerlach.

Ardith (Oickle) George, 85
September 8, 1923 - February 6, 2009
A private prayer service for Ardith Arlene George was held Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Society of Tripp with Pator Dan Flyger, Hurley, officiating.
Ardith Arlene George was born to Arkanas and June Oickle September 8, 1923, in Haverhill, Mass. She worked in the textile manufacturing industry as a “spinner” in now historical mills such as Malden Mills of Massachusetts and Amoskey Mills of New Hampshire and completed her working career until retirement with Velcro USA.
She moved to Lesterville from Manchester, N.H., by way of Norfolk, Neb., in 1989 and resided there close to her daughter and grandchildren until becoming a resident of the Good Samaritan Society of Tripp in March of 1997. She attended the Fellowship Baptist Church in Scotland officiated by Pastor Dan Flyger.
She died Friday, Feb. 6, at the Good Samaritan Society of Tripp, conceding her battle with Alzheimers. She attained the age of 85 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Trinity Ann McLeod Clark, Yankton; Trinity’s partner and stepfather to her children, Greg Andersh, Yankton; brother, Kenneth Oickle, Haverhill, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Shawn Demers, Phoenix, Ariz., Bruce Veneziani, Mission Hill, Kandas Veneziani, Sioux Falls, Justine (Veneziani) Stokes, Gilbert, Ariz., Dallas J. McLeod (US Army stationed in Iraq), Yankton, Desiree (McLeod) Roberts, Sioux Falls, and Devon J. McLeod, South Dakota; nine great-grandchildren, Shawn Patrick and Hailly Demers, Phoenix, Ariz., Christian and Sierra Veneziani, Dallas Veneziani and Trinity Lee McLeod, all of South Dakota, Lola, Tayler and Zoe Stokes, Gilbert, Ariz.; and special family friends, Louise and Steve Erickson and children, Steve and Fawnia, Lesterville.
She was preceded in death by both parents, Arkanas and June Oickle; brothers, Charles, Reginald and Gordon Oickle; sister Marjorie Oickle; son-in-law, Dallas E. McLeod; and special adopted sister, Marion Desautel.

William Maxon, 77
January 30, 1932 - June 11, 2009
A memorial service for William “Bill” Dean Maxon will be held Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at 2 p.m., at First United Methodist Church in Yankton with Rev. Dean Trapp officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton. Honorary casketbearers will be his grandchildren, Maxon Keating, Meryll Kennedy, Ariel Keating, Carson Kennedy, James Deam, Leah Keating, Adrienne (Kennedy) Lewis, Joel Higman, Jerad Higman and Justin Higman.
William Dean Maxon was born January 30, 1932, in Tripp, son of Georgia and Percy Maxon. After graduating from high school and attending college, he farmed with his father. He joined the South Dakota Army National Guard in 1953.
He was united in marriage to Marjory Kadous. He was a successful Yankton businessman and among his business ventures were the Lewis and Clark Marina and the Missouri Valley Shopper/Observer.
He died Thursday, June 11, at his home. He attained the age of 77 years.
He is survived by his wife, Marge, Yankton; four daughters, Sue Higman (Harold, Jr.), Akron, Iowa, Barb Kadous, Surprise, Ariz., Nancy Kadous (Pat Keating), Madison, and Pam Kadous (Kevin Kelley), Spink; nephew, Doug Maxon, Coon Rapids, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Georgia; brother, Lowell; sister-in-law, Wanda; nieces, Deb and JoEllen; and granddaughter, Terryll.
