Helen Carol Nelsen, daughter of Lawrence and Myrtle (Covert) Nelsen, was born December 23, 1908 in Wheaton, MN. In 1920 Helen moved with her family to Sioux Falls, SD where she grew up and received her education.

Helen was united in marriage with George B. Medeck on April 5, 1929 in Sioux Falls. Together they raised one daughter, Bonnie. George preceded her in death on June 15, 1971. Helen was united in marriage with A.M. “Bud” Wilson on January 7, 1978 in Sioux Falls. Bud died on November 29, 1993.

Helen was a member of First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls since 1933. She was a member of Esther and Rachel Circles and served on the Board for the Elderly at church. She was also past secretary of the Sioux Falls Audubon Society.

Helen enjoyed traveling, working in her flower gardens and making crafts. She was proud of her Scandinavian heritage and liked to make treats for her family such as rosettes, sandbakkels, lefse and krumkake. During her lifetime, Helen was a devoted owner of two special dogs, “Tiny” and “Lacey”.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Bonnie Griffith and her husband, Bob, Sioux Falls, SD; four grandchildren, Sue Wollmuth and her husband, Dave, Sioux Falls, SD, Randy Griffith, Sioux Falls, SD, Paul Griffith and his wife, Michelle, Sioux Falls, SD, Perry Griffith, Pierre, SD; five great-grandchildren, Gabriel Ronan, Sara Ronan, Stephanie Griffith, Grant Griffith, and Mason Griffith, all of Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husbands, Helen was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Sally Griffith; two brothers, Harvey and Wendell Nelsen; and two sisters, Leslie Nelsen and one in infancy.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at Dow-Rummel Village following the memorial service.

Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church.

Patricia Ann Strum, daughter of Harold and Deloris (Newman) Strum, was born March 22, 1950 in Sioux Falls, SD. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1968 and then moved to Nashville, TN where she worked for several years. Patty returned to Sioux Falls and worked at McKennan Hospital in the pediatric department before moving to Minneapolis, MN to work at Children’s Hospital. She then returned to Nashville where she worked for several years until declining health caused her to return to Sioux Falls in 1999. Patty currently worked at Avera McKennan Hospital.

Patty was a member of Springdale Lutheran Church. She loved all types of music and also collected giraffes as a hobby.

Grateful for having shared her life are her parents, Harold and Deloris Strum, Sioux Falls, SD; her sister, Pam Tornquist and her husband, Brian, Plattsmouth, NE; three brothers, Chris Strum and his wife, Angela, Lennox, SD, Roger Strum, O’Neill, NE, Michael Strum, Des Moines, IA; five aunts and uncles, Shirley Newman, Sioux Falls, SD, Shirley and Ron Swanson, Egan, MN, Richard and Melvina Newman, Sioux Falls, SD; two nieces and one nephew, Michaela Strum, Emily Strum, Matt Strum; two unborn nieces or nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Patty was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at Springdale Lutheran Church following the funeral service and prior to the committal service.

Abraham James Brinkhuis, son of Abraham and Hattie (Dorseman) Brinkhuis, was born August 18, 1925 at Newkirk, IA. He received his education in Rock Valley, IA. On November 19, 1943, Abe entered the United States Navy where he served in World War II. He was honorably discharged on January 28, 1946. In 1949, Abe moved to Sioux Falls, SD where he began working at John Morrell and Company in the Pork Division. He retired in 1984.

Abe was united in marriage with Grace (Trauernicht) Wylie on September 3, 1966, at Sioux Falls.

Abe was a longtime member of East Side Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He worked with the Boy Scouts for many years and was a member of the American Legion Post #15 and the John M. Bliss V.F.W. Post #628, both of Sioux Falls.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Grace Brinkhuis, Sioux Falls, SD; a son, Robert Brinkhuis, Sioux Falls, SD; two stepsons, R.W. “Ron” Wylie and his wife, Teresa, Brandon, SD, John Wylie and his wife, Lona, Eagan, MN; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Rev. James Brinkhuis and his wife, Darlene, Little Rock, IA; three sisters, Gladys Terpstra and her husband, Harry, Brooten, MN, Hermina Sandbulte, Edgerton, MN, Mary Van Surksum and her husband, Richard, Rock Valley, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Abe was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Peggy Sue Brinkhuis; and a stepdaughter, Connie Shafer.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at East Side Presbyterian Church following the committal service.

In lieu of flowers, Abe’s family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Edwin R. “Andy” Anderson, son of Andre and Hanna (Engebretson) Anderson, was born October 8, 1903 in Jackson, MN. He grew up and graduated from high school there. He attended Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD. He then began work at John Morrell and Company in Sioux Falls.

Andy was united in marriage with Florence D. Wallin in Dell Rapids, SD on March 30, 1929. He retired as a supervisor from Morrell’s after 41 years of service.

Andy was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He also volunteered countless hours at Sioux Valley Hospital.

Grateful for having shared his life are numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence, on September 16, 1988; his parents; three brothers, Robert, Herman, Henry; and four sisters, Christine, Clara, Anna and Inga.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at Wesley United Methodist Church following the committal service.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Wesley United Methodist Church for youth scholarships.

Scotland, SD ~ Edward W. Rebel, 95, died Monday, March 3, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Center in Scotland, SD. Edward William Rebel, son of Henry and Anna (Mudder) Rebel, was born September 8, 1907, the youngest of 12 children, at Olivet, SD. He was raised in that area and moved to Illinois where he spent most of his adult life. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the Hospital Corps. Edward returned to Scotland in the early 1980’s.

Survivors include two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law; and nieces in the area.

Arlo G. Swanson, son of Carl and Hilda (Johnson) Swanson, was born November 17, 1925 in Watertown, SD. He grew up in Revillo, SD and graduated from high school there.

Arlo was united in marriage with Elouise (Hansen) Swanson on October 22, 1946 in Sioux Falls, SD. Arlo served in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Guadalcanal in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Arlo was injured while stationed there and was in a Naval hospital in San Diego, CA for 11 months.

Arlo attended Nettleton and Augustana Colleges in Sioux Falls. He also took many banking courses at different colleges before his employment with Northwestern National Banks in Sioux Falls and Huron, SD. In 1961, Arlo was appointed by President John F. Kennedy and continued to serve through L.B. Johnson’s term in office as the State Director of the Farmer’s Home Administration. He then served as Deputy Secretary of Agriculture in the state of Pennsylvania before serving as the National Director of Green Thumb, INC. in Washington D.C.

Arlo was very involved with the church as a Sunday school superintendent, deacon and state director of men’s fellowship. He also loved to use his gift of music by singing in the choir as well as solos. Arlo was very instrumental in the formation and groundbreaking of several churches. He also served on the board of Evangel University.

Arlo was a member of Prairie Hills Covenant Church, the American Legion, the Gideons and was a life-member of the DAV. He enjoyed fishing, reading political and spiritual growth books and taking road trips. He especially enjoyed writing letters to congressmen, senators and presidents, just to voice his opinion and remain active in political issues.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Elouise Swanson, Sioux Falls, SD; three daughters, Arlouise Papit, Dallas, TX, Linda Day and her husband, Rick, Morgantown, WV, Rose Palmer and her husband, Stephen, Sioux Falls, SD; one son, Gregory Swanson and his wife, Beth, Richmond, VA; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Swanson and his wife, Lois, Naches, WA, Lavone Swanson and his wife, Charlene, Yakima, WA, Douglas Swanson and his wife, Pam, Yakima, WA; two sisters, Pearl Wilson, Sioux Falls, SD, Larece Nelson and her husband, Kermit, Tieton, WA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Arlo was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wallace; and one sister, Doris, in infancy.

Douglas Duane Buskohl, son of Delmar and Marian (Buus) Buskohl, was born October 21, 1951, in Gackle, ND. He grew up in Sioux Falls, SD, and received his education from Washington High School.

Doug was united in marriage with Joanne Hine on October 28, 1972 in Sioux Falls. Doug was a truck driver for several years before he became the owner and operator of Buskohl Home Improvements. Doug later returned to truck driving for many years as he enjoyed exploring the countryside as he so adored. In 1992, Doug was forced in to retirement due to health reasons.

Doug enjoyed drawing, the outdoors, art, football, and horseshoes. He especially enjoyed giving time to others and helping those in need.

Grateful for having shared his life are, his wife, Joanne Buskohl, Sioux Falls; two daughters, Carrie Hill and her husband, Brad, Sioux Falls, Jodie Buskohl, Sioux Falls; and one son, Robb Buskohl, Sioux Falls; mother, Marian Buskohl, Sioux Falls; two sisters, Gloria Voigt and her husband, Jim, Hartford, Pat Heesch and her husband, Lowell, Boise, ID; one son, Butch Buskohl and his wife, Marilyn, Sioux Falls; a grandson, Austin Hill (8), Sioux Falls; a granddaughter, Alyssa Hill (3), Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Doug’s love will remain in our hearts and his memory will be cherished until the day we meet again, in the Kingdom of the Lord.
