William M. Berg, 83

August 7, 1931 - June 22, 2015

Funeral services for William M. Berg were held June 26 at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Tripp.

Burial was in the Frieden’s Reformed Cemetery, Tripp, with military graveside rites.

Goglin Funeral Home in Tripp was in charge of arrangements.

William Michael Berg was born Friday, Aug. 7, 1931, to Joseph and Margaret (Elsen) Berg in Parkston.

He attended Parkston High School and went on to earn his GED.

In May 1950, he enlisted in the United States Navy.

Upon his honorable discharge in March 1954, he moved to Dimock where he worked for a John Deere dealership for a year.

On June 15, 1954, he was united in marriage to Gladys Brandt.

They made their home in the country northeast of Tripp where he farmed for many years.

In 2002, he moved to Leeds, N.D., where he worked various jobs until returning to Tripp in November 2014.

He was a life-member of the Jelkin-Harms Legion Post #142 and a past member of the Scotland VFW.

He served as a local 4-H leader.

He died Monday, June 22, at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

He attained the age of 83 years, 10 months and 15 days.

He is survived by his sons, Mark (Robin) Berg, Sioux Falls, and Mike Berg and special friend, Sherrie, Tripp; grandchildren, Rena, James, Cody and Jeremiah; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Jane Stock, Eaton, Colo., and LaVonne Mueller, Elko, Nevada; sister-in-law, Janette Brandt, Tripp; and his special friend, Gladys Friederich, Parkston.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys, in 1993; son, Joel Berg; parents; infant siblings, Sylvester and Darlene; brothers, Elmer, Raymond, Cornelius and Donald; sisters, Nathalean Rempfer, Viola Murtha, Eleanor Hohn and Florence Larson; and many nieces and nephews.

Rolland Roy Permann, 84

Jan. 7, 1930 - May 30, 2015

Private services for Rolland Roy Permann were held, with Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, in care of the arrangements.

Rolland Roy Permann was born July 24, 1930, in Tripp to Gustave and Rose (Konstanz) Permann.

He grew up in Tripp and graduated from Tripp High School and continued his education at Southern State Teachers College.

On Jan. 9, 1951, he entered into the United States Air Force, serving his country until Jan. 14, 1955, when he received an honorable discharge.

He was a school teacher in Irene, Deadwood, Doland and Woonsocket.

He died Sunday, June 21, at Avera Bormann Manor, Parkston, at the age of 84.

He is survived by his son, Michael Permann, Platte; brother, Larry Permann, Paradise, Calif.; sister, Lou (George) Shelley, Brookings; many grandchildren; and niece, Jane (Joel) Deboer, Brookings.

He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Permann, his parents, and brother, Melvin Permann.

Sylvia (Rank) Huber, 89

April 27, 1926 - June 26, 2015

Sylvia Huber, 89, died Friday, June 26, at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 2, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Clayton.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 1, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Arrangements are by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston.

Sherman G. Letcher, 89

Died July 16, 2015

Funeral services for Sherman G. Letcher were held July 25 at Northridge Baptist Church in Mitchell.

Burial was in the Greenhill Cemetery in Alexandria, with military rites.

Will Funeral Chapel of Mitchell was in charge of arrangements.

Sherman was born on the farm where he lived most of his life in Hanson County to Elmer and Rosa (Fisher) Letcher.

He married Ellestine Schop-pert Feb. 20, 1949, in Parkston. They resided on the same farm that he was born on for 50 years until their retirement. They moved to Mitchell in November of 1998.

They were members of the United Brethren Church at Milltown.

He served as a County Commissioner for Hanson County for over 20 years, until his retirement.

He died Thursday, July 16, at Firesteel Healthcare Center.

He attained the age of 89 years.

He is survived by his three sons, Dale (Kyna), Mitchell, Jerome (Peggy), Aberdeen, and David (Terry), Bennington, Neb.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Fern Huber, Bridgewater.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellestine; three sisters, Leona Whitman, Faye Bahmuller, and Shirley Letcher; two brothers, Kenneth and Leroy Letcher; his parents; and two great-granddaughters, Ellestine and Louisa Malcom.

Josephine Faye (Whitney) Schoenfelder, 77

November 20, 1937 - July 16, 2015

Funeral services for Josephine F. “Josie” Schoenfelder were held July 20 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kennebec.

Burial was in the St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery at Kennebec with Hickey Funeral Chapel, Chamberlain, in charge of arrangements.

Josephine Faye Whitney was born Nov. 20, 1937, to Harold “Lank” and Margaret (Hamer) Whitney.

She attended country school near Kennebec and graduated from Kennebec High School in 1955.

On April 23, 1956, she was united in marriage to Willard Schoenfelder.

They made their home on the farm where she worked alongside Curly.

After they retired from farming, she worked for over 15 years as the librarian in Kennebec.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and St. Michael’s Altar Society, and also served as the Eucharistic Minister.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 40 years, a member of the Busy Bee Club and the Red Hat Club.

She died July 16 at her home in Kennebec at the age of 77 years.

She is survived by her husband, Willard Schoenfelder, Kennebec; six daughters, Diane and Tim Dodson, Nemo, Gloria Vollmer and Mike Schmidt, Pierre, Margie and Dennis Streitz, Parkston, Barb and Reno Roth, Parkston, Beth and Scott Moore, Ipswich, and Melody and Brian Hohn, Parkston; 12 grandchildren, Amber (Mike) Dodson, Melissa (J) Brazil, RaKel (Josh) Streitz, Tatum Streitz, Brittany (Eric) Schoenfelder, Nikki (Jon) Reichert, Lindsey Roth, Valerie (Zack) Nelson, Brandon (Baley) Moore, Tori Moore, Kyle (Hanna) Hohn, and Tanner Hohn; 10 great-grandchildren, Ella Swanson, Jaxon and Corbin Dodson, Trinity and Clover Streitz, Lexi and Easton Schoenfelder, Vera and Billie Nelson, and Hadley Hohn; two brothers, Bob Whitney, Hamill, and Connie (Wanda) Whitney, Gillette, Wyo.; and three sisters, Grace (Ed) Stiefvater, Kennebec, Harriett (Jim) Ginsbach, Oelrichs, and Marilyn Walling, Kennebec.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two grandsons, Ryan Hohn and Derek Swanson; sister, Betty Worlie; and brother, Ronnie Whitney.

Charlotte (Schriever) Boehmer, 75

July 12, 1940 - August 25, 2015

A celebration of Charlotte’s life was held Aug. 27.

Charlotte Ann Boehmer was born July 12, 1940, to Kelley and Viviana (McLaury) Schriever.

She was united in marriage to Merle Boehmer Aug. 31, 1974.

She worked for many years at Ravens in Parkston and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and American Legion Auxiliary.

She died Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Avera St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston.

She attained the age of 75 years.

She is survived by her husband, Merle Boehmer, Parkston; siblings, Marylin Gould, Virginia Olson, Sandi McConniel and Lyn (Mark) Stevens, all of Sioux Falls; Bev Mork, Enterprise, Ore., and Kevin and Merlin Schriever, Sioux Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, and four brothers-in-law.

Ella Mae (Bartel) Bietz, 91

December 20, 1923 - August 23, 2015

Funeral services for Ella Mae Bietz were held Aug. 27 at Zion Lutheran Church in Scotland.

Burial was in the Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, with Goglin Funeral Home, Scotland, in charge of arrangements.

Ella Mae Bietz was born Thursday, Dec. 20, 1923, to Herb and Lena (Winter) Bartel in Parkston.

For a time, she worked at the ASCS office in Parkston.

On Sept. 14, 1944, she was united in marriage to Eugene Bietz at the Congregational Church in rural Kaylor.

Together, they made their home on a farm northwest of Scotland where she cared for her family and helped Eugene on the farm.

In 1984, after 40 years on the farm, they retired and built their new home in Scotland.

She worked in the Dietary Department at the Good Samaritan Society, Scotland, volunteered at the local blood drives and helped with Meals on Wheels.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Scotland where she was active in the ZLCW and attended Bible study.

She passed away Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Good Samaritan Society, Scotland.

She attained the age of 91 years, eight months and three days.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 71 years, Eugene Bietz, Scotland; son, Dennis and Dorothy Bietz and family, Mike and Stephanie and their children, Annaliese, Emerson and Polly; daughter, Ron and Donna Nelson and family: Sarah and Kyle Streich and their children Carlie, Drew, and Lily, Justin and Dr. Ann Narmi/Nelson and their children Thomas and Charles, Christin Nelson, Emily Nelson and Jarod Nelson; the late Sandy Yackley’s family: Jill Ireland and Justin Weiland and their daughter, Pearl, Jake and Kelli Ireland; Josh Ireland and fiancee Theresa, Jacki Ireland and her children, Sophia and Idan Jones, Jay Ireland and his children, Jack, Isabella, and Aiden; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ervin Bartel; and sister, Norma Weisz.
