Joyce Lovejoy

BLOOMFIELD, Neb. -- Joyce Vernelle Lovejoy, 66, Bloomfield, Neb., died Friday (Nov. 29, 2002) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral services were held Monday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Bloomfield, with the Rev. Tom Miller officiating. Burial was in the Bloomfield Cemetery.

The Brockhaus Funeral Home, Bloomfield, was in charge of arrangements.

She was born Aug. 20, 1936, at Randolph, Neb., to Everett and Laura (Engelbart) Norman. She was baptized Sept. 7, 1941, and made her Affirmation of Faith/Confirmation May 31, 1953, both at Thabor Lutheran Church, Wausa, Neb. She was currently a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Bloomfield. She attended country school District 89 near Randolph and attended high school in Wausa, Neb., graduating May 19, 1954. After high school, she worked in the San Diego area for a short time. She worked for the local telephone company in Bloomfield as a telephone operator. In later years, she operated a baby sitting service in her home. She lived most of her adult life in Bloomfield. She married James Lovejoy Aug. 23, 1961, at the Methodist Church, Bloomfield.

She enjoyed working with quilts and baking, as well as visiting with friends and family. She enjoyed her grandchildren caring for them on occasion, as well as attending their various activities. She also did volunteer work for her church.

She is survived by her husband, James; two sons: Bradley (Gayleen), Bloomfield; and Bryan (Pam), Norfolk; six grandchildren; two brothers: LaNoy Norman, Pender, Neb.; and Darel Norman, Wausa; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Myra Hayward

Myra L. Hayward, age 71, of Yankton, passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with the Rev. John Fischer officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton.

Myra was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Feb. 4, 1931, to Frederick and Elvena (Gravelle) Hore. She worked for 30 years for Dodge and Cox in San Francisco. She lived for many years in San Mateo, Calif., until last October when she moved to Yankton.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton.

She loved to travel in her motor home. She had a great love for jigsaw puzzles, reading, poetry and football, especially the San Francisco 49ers.

Her memory will be cherished many nieces and nephews in New York and Oregon; a brother-in-law William Benk of New York; a sister-in-law Isabelle Hore of Ontario, Canada, and friend Karen Nadeau, Yankton, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: William G. Rand and Edward Hore; and a sister, Carol Benk.

Lela Seney

VERMILLION -- Lela M. Seney, 87, Vermillion, died Tuesday (Dec. 3, 2002) at Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Friday at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Vermillion, with the Rev. Don Imming officiating. Burial is in the Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation is from 3-8 p.m. Thursday with an 8 p.m. prayer service at the Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion.

She was born Nov. 5, 1915, at Elk Point, to Nelson and Nona (Maynard) Trudeau. She married Albert Seney Feb. 26, 1935, in Vermillion. She was a homemaker. Her husband died Nov. 19, 1996.

She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Daughters and St. Agnes Catholic Church, Vermillion.

She is survived by two sons: David (Cheryl) Seney, Burbank, and Bill (Eleanor) Seney, Beresford; two daughters: Judy (Shorty) Hanson and Joyce Button, all of Vermillion; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Myrtle Cooper, Reno, Nev., and Doris Erickson, Sacramento, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one daughter, one grandson and one great-grandson.

Memorials may be directed to Vermillion Hospice.

Viola Pelton

AVON -- Viola Gertrude Pelton, 93, Avon, died Monday (Dec. 2, 2002) at the Good Samaritan Center, Wagner.

Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Avon. Burial is in the church Cemetery, rural Avon.

Visitation is from 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. followed by a 7:30 p.m. prayer service today (Wednesday) at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel, Avon. Visitation continues from 10 a.m.-noon Thursday at the funeral chapel.

She was born Jan. 25, 1909, in rural Avon, to W.W. and Cora (Meyers) Deurmier. She attended school through the eighth grade. She married Wayne H. Pelton Nov. 17, 1926, at Yankton. They farmed in Bon Homme County until 1971, when they moved into Avon. She worked at the Avon Public School and Avon Enterprises until her retirement in 1974. Her husband died Jan. 15, 1995. She entered the Good Samaritan Center, Wagner, Oct. 2, 2001.

She was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Avon.

She will be remembered for her enjoyment of crocheting and embroidering. She loved to play bingo and rummy with her sisters. She loved her family and always made sure there was plenty to eat.

She is survived by her children: Evelyn (Edgar) Knoll and Myrtle (Ray) Reiff, all of Avon; Betty (Lawrence) Sandau, Tripp; Calvin, Wagner; Larry (Charmaine), Avon; Carol (Lattie) Draughon, Springfield; Ronnie (Linda), Avon; one daughter-in-law, Judy Pelton, Avon; 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Mary Hinzman, Hot Springs; Anna Siewert, Avon; Ruth Renschler, Meckling; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, two grandsons, one great-grandson, one great-great-grandson, two brothers and three sisters.

Margery Kniffen

VERMILLION -- Margery C. Kniffen, 64, Aztec, N.M. and formerly of Vermillion, died Nov. 7, 2002, at the San Juan Regional Hospital, Farmington, N.M., of lung cancer.

Graveside services for Margery C. Kniffen are 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Calvary Cemetery, Vermillion. Lunch will be served after the service in the St. Agnes Auditorium.

Lillian Nelson

Lillian M. Nelson, age 83, of Yankton, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Sunset Manor Nursing Home, Irene, S.D.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. O.K. Anderson and Rev. James M. Nelson officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton.

Visitations will be 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday (today) at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with the family present in the fellowship room. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Lillian Marian Nelson (Rasmussen) was born at home on a farm near Hubbard, Neb., on the 16th of December in 1918 as the seventh child of Martin and Martha Rasmussen who had immigrated to America from Denmark. Lillian was only five when her father died prematurely, and just two years later her mother died following a lengthy illness. She and her siblings attended the nearby country school and Lutheran Church. Lillian attended high school in South Sioux City, Neb., while she worked for and lived with a local family. During this time she met Truman Nelson. On Dec. 21, 1942, two weeks after Pearl Harbor and before Truman had to leave for the Army, the two were married. They lived in Boise, Idaho, until Truman was sent overseas. Each day of the four years they were apart, Lillian wrote him a "V-Mail." Later she would use her fine penmanship for others in need as for over 30 years she sent cards on behalf of her church. In April of 1946 the couple moved to Yankton, S.D., where they built their home.

Lillian was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton, a faithful wife and a devoted mother of two sons. No boy could ask for a better mom, and Truman was always greeted with a clean house and home cooked meals. He was sent back to work driving bus with boots polished, shirts military creased, underwear ironed, lighter filled, suitcase packed and enough kisses to last until he returned. Lillian died on December 3, 2001.

Lillian is survived by her husband, Truman of Yankton; two sons: Larry of Minneapolis and the Rev. James (Cathy) of Texas; four grandchildren: Scott of Texas, Martin with the US Army in Germany, and Tammie and Amy of Minneapolis; her brother Lawrence of California; and her sister Ella (Heeney) of Iowa.

Her parents, two sisters: Margaret and Charlotte, and three brothers: Marvin, Arthur and Martin preceded her in death.

Francis Masten

CROFTON, Neb. -- Francis Everett Masten, 79, Crofton, Neb., died Friday (Dec. 6, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at Calvary Baptist Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Larry Odle officiating. Burial is in the Greenwood Cemetery, Wayne, Neb., with military honors by Crofton American Legion Post No. 128.

Pallbearers are Jeremy Tramp, Christopher Tramp, Adam Naber, Jason Masten, Brent Masten and Nick Masten.

Visitation is one hour prior to the service today at the church.

The Wintz Funeral Home, Crofton, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born March 6, 1923, in Macy, Neb., to Marvin Joseph and Louise Marie (Poellet) Masten. He grew up in Walthill, Neb., and graduated from Walthill High School in 1940. He graduated from Wayne State College with a bachelor's degree in education, and a Masters and sixth-year degree from the University of Nebraska. He attended the University of Colorado, the University of South Dakota and DePaul University. He served in World War II in the U.S. Navy, during which he was a survivor of the sinking of the U.S.S. Fiske, which was sunk in 1944 in the North Atlantic. He married Lucile Opal Keene July 5, 1947, in Ogallala, Neb. He taught industrial shop, math and science. He was a superintendent at Gandy (Neb.) public schools, then at Walthill Public School and North Bend Central High School, North Bend, Neb. He retired in 1984 after 28 years in education.

He was a member of the Crofton American Legion Post 128 and the Northeast Chapter of the Good Sam Camping Club of Nebraska. He was a member of the National RV Volunteers Club for 15 years.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was very proud of his family. He was a big fan of Big Red Nebraska football. He loved fishing, hunting and camping.

Survivors include his wife, Lucile Masten, Crofton; one son: Barry (Connie) Masten, Lincoln, Neb,; two daughters: Rhonda (Chuck) Tramp, Wynot, Neb.; and Jana (Paul) Buresh, Keansburg, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers: Joe Masten, Lexington, Neb., and Henry Masten, Maryville, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one infant brother.

Clarice 'Clar' Heisinger

SPRINGFIELD -- Clarice "Clar" Joan Heisinger, 50, Springfield, died Friday (Jan. 31, 2003) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral service is 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Emmanuel Reformed Church, Springfield. Burial is in the church Cemetery, rural Springfield.

Visitation is from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Springfield.

She was born July 16, 1952, at Tyndall, to Clarence and Evelyn (Hubregtse) Tjeerdsma. She attended grade school at Quinn and Perkins Country Schools and was a 1970 graduate from Springfield High School. She graduated in 1971 from Vocational Tech School in Mitchell with an LPN degree. She married George Heisinger on Nov. 18, 1972, at the Emmanuel Reformed Church, Springfield. She worked at the Tobin Clinic and Firesteel Heights Nursing Home in Mitchell. She then chose to stay at home and raise her family. They lived in Mitchell, Lead, Parkston and Sturgis, before moving to Springfield in June of 1998. While in Sturgis, she did private home care for several elderly people. She then renewed her nursing license and worked at the VA in Sturgis for five months before moving to Springfield. While in Springfield, she and her husband owned and operated George's One Stop.

She became a Christian in 1974, while attending the First Wesleyan Church, Mitchell. She was baptized at the First Wesleyan Church, Sturgis, in the spring of 1996. She currently was a faithful member of the Community Bible Church, Springfield.

She will be remembered for her love of chickens, quilting, collecting antiques and going to auctions. She was a very caring and loving person whose smile could brighten anything.

She is survived by her husband, George, Springfield; children: Christopher, Topeka, Kan.; Darrin, Lincoln, Neb.; and Rita, Sioux Falls; her parents, Clarence and Evelyn Tjeerdsma, Springfield; one sister, Norma Adema, Sioux City, Iowa; three brothers: Dwight, Wendell and Lowell, all of Springfield; parents-in-law, Ed and Margaret Heisinger, Parkston; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents and one infant sister and many aunts and uncles.

Vera Olson

TYNDALL -- Vera M. Olson, 89, Tyndall, died Monday (January 22, 2001) at the St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall.

A funeral service is at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Gayville Lutheran Church, Gayville, with the Rev. Martin Ganschow officiating. Burial will be in the Gayville Community Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brian Anderson, Del Dockendorf, Brad Gibson, Brian Gibson, Kevin Gibson and Greg Schiltz.

Visitation is from 1-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

She was born Nov. 27, 1911, at Clearwater, Neb., to Ernest and Mable (Clark) Nyrop. She went to school in Clearwater and graduated from Neligh High School in 1929. She went to Yankton College and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree on June 7, 1933. She went into teaching at Lennox and Gayville School systems. On June 19, 1936, she married Marvin C. "Sparky" Olson of Gayville at Buffalo, N.Y. They traveled a lot together while he played major league baseball. They lived in Alabama, Arizona, New York and Tennessee, but always made their home in Gayville. He died Feb. 5, 1998. For the past eight years she has made her home in Tyndall to be near her family.

She taught Sunday school, was a choir director for years and was a member of her ladies groups at the Gayville Lutheran Church until her retirement in 1988.

She will be well remembered for her love of music, especially playing the organ, singing and directing the church choir. She also enjoyed her flower garden, and watching and feeding the birds and squirrels. Throughout the years she had many special pets, including the most recent, a miniature greyhound named, "Kramer."

She is survived by one son, Andre Olson, Menno; a daughter, Linda (Gary) Gibson, Tyndall; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Marguerite Kramer, Truman, Minn.; many other relatives; and special caregiver, Lou Bullington, Tyndall.

She was preceeded in death by her parents; husband and one brother-in-law.
