Alvin Tuff

Funeral Service for Alvin Sylvester Tuff, 86, a much loved resident of Peever, SD was held on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Peever Lutheran Church, Peever, SD with the Rev. Steve Moberg officiating. Organist was Mona Greseth and soloist was Dan Witte. Pallbearers were Lan-don, Chase and Evan Cutler, Jerad Tuff, Brian O’Connor and Tej Singh. Honorary pallbearers were all of Alvin’s family and friends. Interment was in the Peever Cemetery, Peever, SD. There were military rites by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342. There was a visitation on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. sharing time with family and friends. There was a visitation on Thursday, one hour prior to services at the church.

Alvin was born in Peever, SD on October 2, 1922 to Andrew and Blanche (Bailly) Tuff. He graduated from Peever High School in 1941; he worked in the CCC camps in Montana. He entered the United States Army on April 2, 1943 and served until February 13, 1946. He served in New Guinea during WWII and earned the rank of TEC 5. He was awarded, one overseas bar, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with/1 Bronze Battle Star, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal.

Alvin was united in marriage to Lorraine Lohre on June 12, 1948 at Webster, SD. They worked at Armours in Huron before starting Tuff’s Service in Peever, SD. Known for his dependable, economical service, generosity, good nature and quips, Alvin and his wife ran Tuff’s Service Station for fifty one years. Alvin lived his philosophy, “It’s the little things in life that count.” He was happy being with his family and friends, working in his garage and dancing. He was a member of Peever Lutheran Church, and served as treasurer for several years. He was a member of Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342.

Alvin passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD of complications from Alzheimer’s.

Alvin is survived by his wife of sixty years, Lorraine Tuff of Peever, SD, two daughters, June Tuff of Sioux Falls, SD, and Kathy and husband Brian O’Connor of Rapid City, SD, and one son, Donald and wife, Mary Tuff of Watertown, SD; one sister, Thelma Nielsen of Sisseton, SD; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Carol; two sisters, Lillian and Deloris; five brothers, Emmett, Clifford, Curtis, James and Gene.

Andy Hanson

Funeral Service for Andy K. Hanson, 98, of Sisseton, SD, was held on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the Family Life Assembly of God Church, Sisseton, SD, with the Rev. Vern Donnell officiating. Special music was by Richard and June Evenson. Pallbearers were Zeb Wolfe, Steve Mindt, Kenneth Mindt, Phil Eneboe, and Richard Evenson. Interment was in the Veteran Section of the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. Military Rites by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342. There was visitation on Friday, April 3, 2009 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Andy K. Hanson was born on September 10, 1910 on a farm near Dry Run to Theodore and Hilda (Swen) Hanson. At the age of four, they moved to their own homestead farm in Montana. In 1925 the family moved back to South Dakota, and Andy was old enough to work as a farm hand. Then came the depression. Andy covered the 48 states on trains. Riding the rods, along with countless thousands, he was a hobo. He continued pan handling and transient farm work until he was able to get into CCC camp. There he became adept at mechanical work. From there he became employed in Roy Tallakson’s Garage in Sisseton. Andy joined the Army Air Force in July 1942 and served until September 1945. He served his country valiantly in war time flights over China, Burma and India. He received the European-African–Middle Eastern Theater Service Ribbon; Four Over Seas Bars; Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Ribbon with One Bronze Battle Star, and One Service Strip.

Andy was united in marriage to Emma Mindt on March 22, 1945 in Vancouver, WA. For 24 of those years he was a mechanic at the Eight Street Garage in Oregon City, OR. Emma passed away March 10, 1985. Andy was united in marriage to Clara Bubak on September 10, 1992 in Reno, NV. In 1993 they moved to Sisseton where they made their home. Clara passed away on January 24, 2007. Andy was a member of Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50. Andy entered the Tekakwitha Living Center in March 2003. Andy passed away on March 31, 2009 at the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD.

Andy is survived by three step children, Orville and wife, Shirley Bubak of Sisseton, SD, Beverly and husband, Ralph Brafford-Perrella of Atlanta, GA; Almon and Hattie Mindt of Bend, OR; and one step daughter-in-law, Betty Mindt, and numerous step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Andy was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, Emma and Clara, two sisters and two brothers.

Marliss Brewster

Funeral services for longtime Eden, SD, resident, Marliss L. Brewster, age 86, began at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at the Roslyn Lutheran Church in Roslyn, SD. Reverend Sara Sorensen officiated. The organist was Barb Johnson and the soloists were Gary and Bonnie Strand. Marliss died on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at the Bethesda Home in Webster, SD, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Family members were asked to meet in the church chapel on Saturday by 10:15 a.m. to attend services. Visitation was at the Roslyn Lutheran Church on Friday, April 3, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with a public prayer service following. Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughters, her step-granddaughter, and her friends and staff at the Bethesda Home in Webster. Active pallbearers were Joe and Eric Brewster, Nick Helwig, Milton Bradford, Art Steiner, and Chad Hanisch. Burial was in the Roslyn Lutheran Cemetery, rural Roslyn, SD.

Marliss was born to Alfred and Clara (Christensen) Gilbertson, in Tenney, MN, on September 24, 1922. She moved with her family shortly after her birth to Eden, SD. Marliss attended school in Eden for eleven years, graduating from Webster High School in 1939, when the Eden school closed. Marliss attended Northern Normal in Aberdeen, SD, receiving a teaching certificate, and taught in several rural schools in the Marshall County area during the 1950’s and 60’s.

During WW II she lived in San Francisco, CA and worked at a radar tube factory. Marliss married Stanley C. Brewster on December 31, 1944. They made their home in Fort Worth, TX, while Stanley served in the military. In 1949 Marliss and Stanley returned to Eden, SD, and, along with her father, purchased the local lumberyard. They named their business the Brewster and Gilbertson Lumber Company. Marliss remained active in the business serving as the bookkeeper for many years. In the mid-1970’s, she retired from the lumberyard.

Before being disabled by Alzheimer’s, she loved to dance to the Big Band sounds of the 1940’s and play golf with her sister, Lois. Marliss also enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting, crossword puzzles, reading, playing the organ, and gardening. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of the Roslyn Lutheran Church.

Marliss entered the Americana Nursing Home in Aberdeen, SD in 1995. She became a resident of Bethesda in Webster, SD in 1996, where the kind and loving staff treated her like she was a member of their own family, for which we are deeply grateful.

Marliss is survived by her two sons, Jay Brewster, of Rapid City, SD, and Thomas Brewster and wife Joan, of rural Lake City, SD; her daughter Vicki Helwig and husband Ronald, of Sioux Falls, SD; five grandchildren: Joe Brewster, Rachel Hanisch, Eric Brewster, Nick Helwig, and Aimee Helwig; step-granddaughter, Michaela Just; four great grandchildren; and one step-great grandchild.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and sister, Lois Sherman.

Kathleen Weinkauf

Kathleen Weinkauf of Guernsey, WY passed away March 22, 2009 from meningitis suddenly. Kathy was born April 14, 1953. Kathy was the wife of Clinton Weinkauf, formerly of Sisseton. Clinton is the son of Tillie Weinkauf and the late Edgar Weinkauf.

Elaine H. Freemore

Services for Elaine Freemore, 92, were held Saturday, March 21, 2009, at South Canyon Lutheran Church, Rapid City, SD. The Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiated. She died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Elaine was born September 11, 1916, in Sisseton, SD, to Albert and Emma Hanson. She graduated from Sisseton High School in 1934 and from Moorhead (MN) State Teachers College in 1938, with a degree in English. She began her 42-year teaching career in Glenham and later at Winner. She then moved to California, where she worked at Benecia Arsenal and later taught at Seal Beach High School in Long Beach, CA. At the conclusion of the war, she married Robert Freemore on October 4, 1945 in Long Beach. They made their home in Mobridge, where she was a teacher. In 1969, the family moved to Aberdeen, where she was the Elementary Library Supervisor for Aberdeen Public Schools until she retired in 1983. She moved to Rapid City in 1984 to be with her sister Bernadine. There she was an active member of South Canyon Lutheran Church. Her faith was her compass. She served on many boards, enjoyed bible studies, belonged to Circle and volunteered for many church activities. She continued these activities in Rapid City and volunteered at The Chapel of the Hills. During retirement she traveled extensively, researched family genealogy, enjoyed family reunions, and volunteered in the community.

Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Cari Freemore, Custer, SD; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Robert Clough, Wasilla, AK; two sisters, Gail Ulland, Salt Lake City, UT, and Marion Milburn, Ephrata, WA; and one sister-in-law, Marion Freemore, Seymour, WI.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents; and two sisters, Bernadine Gliedt and Doris Godman.

Burial took place Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at the Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Aberdeen, SD, with the Rev. Tanya Rist officiating.

The family requests memorial donations be made to South Canyon Lutheran Church, 700 44th St., Rapid City, SD 57702.

Mavis Miklebost

Mavis Emily Miklebost passed away in the presence of her son Ronald at his Dublin, CA home in the early evening on May 21, 2009.

Mavis Jensen was born in Wilmot, SD on April 2, 1920. She graduated from Browns Valley High School in 1939 and married a persistent suitor, "Mike" in 1941. After Mike joined the Navy, Mavis and daughter Judy and her parents, Roy and Charlotte Jensen relocated to Seattle, WA to help the war effort in the shipyards. In 1951 they moved to Berkeley, CA where she worked at the University of California's Dept. of Economics and then for the Berkeley Unified School District until 1982. In 1960 they bought a cottage in Nice, CA, which they used as their vacation home for many years and retired there in 1982.

Mavis was a loving wife, mother, aunt and grandmother to her family. She was an outgoing, outspoken, vivacious woman, full of life and friends and hobbies. She was instrumental in the formation and funding of the Nice Volunteer Fire Department. Each year she looked forward to assisting in organizing the RedBud Festiv-als and she heartfully enjoyed working in the Thrift Shop at the local Senior Center in Lucerne and was always willing to help those in need. She took great joy in entertaining friends and family in her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Merlyn Albert "Mike" Mikle-bost, who passed away in 2000.

She is survived by two children, Judy Kay Miklebost Baker (husband John) of Flowermound, TX and Ronald Eugene Miklebost (wife Stephanie) and also survived by two brothers, Roland Jensen, SD and Dale Jensen, CA. Mavis was lovingly known as "Granny" (her choice!) to her four Grandchildren (Todd, Terri, Deanne and Danny Baker) and her seven Great Grandchildren (Ariana and Anthony Baker, Jessica and Maia Bloodgood, Kaylyn Baker and Nicolas and Chloe Baker).

Mavis created the family's foundation. All who knew her will greatly miss her strength, honesty, and companionship.

Madeline White

Funeral Mass for Madeline Melba White, 66 of Sisseton, SD was held on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Sisseton, SD with Rev. Fr. Andy Knop, O.M.I. Celebrant. Organist was Bern-adine Gaikowski. Pallbearers were Mark Genia, Todd Brown, Anthony Rodriquez, Scott DuMarce, Marlon DuMarce, and Seth White. Honorary pallbearers were June Wika, Connie Moen, Francis Marks, Bernice Guy, Eugene DeMarrias, Delphine Wanna, Marcella Haug, Janice Gill and Harold Moore. There was a wake service on Monday, December 21, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. and an all night wake on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Hall, Sisseton, SD.

Madeline was born on February 19, 1943 in Sisseton, SD to Benjamin and Florine (Marks) White. She attended Flandreau Indian School and graduated in 1961. Madeline moved back to Sisseton where she continued her artist career. She enjoyed beading, quilting, writing, painting and working with clay. She painted on eggs for Schlitz Foods. She enjoyed playing bingo and loved watching movies. She was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. Madeline entered the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD on November 19. 2009. Madeline passed away on December 20, 2009 at Tekakwitha Living Center, after a long battle with cancer.
Madeline is survived by five children, Anita White of Sisseton, SD, Moshall White of New Effington, SD, James Todd White of Sisseton, SD, Royal J. White of Rosholt, SD and Melissa K. White of Sisseton, SD; one sister, Sandra White of Sisseton, SD and thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Madeline was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and two sisters, and one granddaughter.

Shirley (Clott) Oliver

Shirley Jeanne Clott was born on July 20, 1933 in Sisseton, SD to Lawren and Elizabeth (Johnson) Clott and went to be with the Lord on December 13, 2009. She was a resident of Golden Livingcenter - Lakeridge, Roseville, MN, at the time of her death.

Services for Shirley were held at Eaglebrook Church, White Bear Lake, MN, on December 17, 2009.

She was raised on a farm at Peever, SD. Growing up, she loved spending time with her grandparents, Walter and Grace Clott.

When she was about 11 years old, the family moved to Placerville, CA, living there only one year. They returned to Sisseton, SD, where she lived until graduation from high school in 1951. She lived and worked in Minneapolis, MN, sharing an apartment with cousins and a friend. She moved back to Sisseton and then later to Rapid City, SD. It was there she met her husband, Bruce Oliver. They were married November 28, 1959, in Sisseton, SD.

Shirley enjoyed music and singing in church. She was active in youth group and made most of her friends there. She was a very good cook and liked to bake.

She lived in several different places - the Minneapolis area, Rapid City, Florida, Texas, Japan and St. Paul area.

She is survived by her daughters April (Brad) Strandquist of Lindstrom, MN and Allison (Quin) Lesch of St. Paul, MN; granddaughter Kelsey Egge and granddaughter-to-be baby Lesch; sisters Carol (Jack) Harris of Stacy, MN; June (Richard ) Evenson of Sisseton, SD; Sandi (Lee) Martin of Menasha, WI; Corinne (Don) Wiltshire of Centuria, WI; and Connie (Miles) Sandoz of Henderson, NV; former husband Bruce, many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly, and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents Lawren and Elizabeth Clott; and three brothers, Eugene, Dale and Richard.

She will be greatly missed but not forgotten.

Lynn M. Brandenburger

Lynn M. Brandenburger, 80, New Effington, SD, died Monday, December 21, 2009, at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.

Funeral services were Monday, December 28, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Rosholt, SD with Father Dennis Deis, O.M.I, officiating. Music was provided by organist Lana Sand.

Burial was in the St. Nicholas Cemetery, rural Rosholt, SD. Military honors were provided by the Read-Veflin American Legion Post 180 of New Effington. Pallbearers were Lynn’s sons.

Visitation was Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Effington, SD. Visitation continued Monday one hour prior to the service at St. John’s in Rosholt.

Lynn Mathew Brandenburger was born December 15, 1929, at Wheaton, MN, to Mathias and Josephine (Prost) Brandenburger. After attending school at the St. Francis Academy in Hankinson, he farmed with his father.

On October 8, 1953, Lynn married Valeria Bernard at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Hankinson. From May 13, 1954, to September 13, 1955, Lynn served in the U.S. Army earning the National Defense Service Medal. After returning home, he farmed and owned a road construction company. He also was a commercial fisherman in the winter for 21 years. In 1988 Lynn retired from farming, but continued to do some construction work with his payloader. He built a new house with his own small lake south of New Effington in 1999. Valeria passed away in 2005.

Lynn was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for nearly 50 years. He was also a member of the Read-Veflin American Legion in New Effington and a past member of the New Effington City Council.

Lynn was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed all types of gardening and playing cards. He was a photographer in the Army and continued to enjoy it the rest of his life. Lynn’s greatest passion was for his grandchildren.

Survivors include his ten children, Neil (Martha) Brand-enburger of New Effington, SD, Cynthia (Richard) Novot-ny of Wyndmere, ND, Timothy (Connie) Brandenburger of New Effington, SD, Constance (Sidney) Sjoquist of Wahpeton, ND, Richard (JoLynn) Brand-enburger of Great Bend, ND, Nathan (Karla) Brandenburger of Birmingham, AL, Dale (Manuela) Brandenburger of Agar, SD, Lynn, Jr., (Martina) Brandenburger, of Fargo, ND, Mathew (Kasey) Branden-burger of Rosholt, and Thomas (Janice) Brandenburger of Madison, SD; 33 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Lynn was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Valeria; and brother, Raymond.

Ruth (Brown) Stake

Ruth (Brown) Stake, 84, passed away on December 10, 2009, at Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls, SD. She had been in a nursing home for about four years.

Ruth was born May 27, 1925, on a farm near Buffalo Lake, SD. Her parents were Walter Sr. and Lydia (Johnson) Brown. Her schooling was in Roberts County, SD.

Ruth and a sister moved to Huntington Park, CA, where she worked at a Defense Plant for a few years. It was while living in California that Ruth married Rolland Stake. Ruth had four sons, Dale, Rolland, Rock and Buddy, and one daughter, Phauneil.

Later she moved to Deer Lodge, MT, where two of her brothers worked in a phosphorus mine. Ruth worked as a waitress and also did babysitting. She married Bill Galvin and moved to Denver, CO. Ruth continued babysitting for the Denver County Welfare Department for 15 years.

Later Ruth went to Bristol, SD, and took care of her mother, who was bedridden. After her mother died, Ruth moved to Sioux Falls, SD, and lived with her daughter, Phauneil, until she went to a nursing home and then moved to a Hospice House.

Ruth was a hard worker, but also had a sense of humor. She also could fix anything.

Survivors include three sons, Dale, Rolland and Buddy Stake, and one daughter, Phauneil Conger, all of Sioux Falls, SD; one brother, Dan and wife Lila Brown of Sisseton, SD; two sisters, Ellen Denholm, Webster, SD, and Doris Brown, Lynnwood, WA; two sister-in-laws, Donna Brown, Deer Lodge, MT, and Joan Brown, Auburn, WA; 20 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Rolland Stake; a son, Rock Stake; her parents; and brothers Lloyd, Russel, Phillip and Walter Jr. Brown.

Yvonne Nancy

Funeral Service for Yvonne Nancy Two Stars, Ideya Inajin Win, Standing Light Woman, 57, of Sisseton, SD was held on Thursday, December 24, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Sisseton Wahpeton Community Center, Agency Village, SD with John Cloud III, Senior Catechist, Gerald Heminger Jr., Chris Galcatcher and St. Mary’s Episcopal Lay Readers officiating. Organist was Billy Kohl with special music by Butch Felix and High Trail Drum Group. Pallbearers were Bill Owen, Glen Fineday, Tyrone Bearhead, Joe Owen, Dennis Owen Jr., Duane Fineday, Mike McCafferty and Leslie Campbell Jr. Honorary Pallbearers were Louella Cloud, Exzilda Seaboy, Chyrel DeCoteau, Cynthia Smith, Ann German, Rhonda Kampeska, Marsha Renville, Cleone Brant, Nadine Fredricks, Janel Many Lightnings, Mary Higheagle, Corrine Feather and Myrna Thompson, and all of Nancy’s Family and Friends.

Interment was in St. Mary’s Episcopal Cemetery, Agency Village, SD. There was a wake service on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. and an all night wake on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Sisseton Wahpeton Community Center, Agency Village, SD.

Yvonne Nancy Two Stars was born on September 20, 1952 in Pierre, SD to John and Estelline (Bernard) Two Stars Sr. Yvonne attended school in Sisseton, SD and graduated from Sisseton, SD. Following high school she attended Interstate Business College in Fargo, ND. She went to Minn-eapolis, MN and worked as a telemarketer. Nancy worked as an assistant manager of the Dakota Nation Development Corporation. She liked to travel, visiting Oregon and Cali-fornia and a number of other states. She liked to write, text, she loved the sunrises and sunsets, and watching Star Trek and CSI. She liked the Joyce Meyer Ministry, and she did her daily devotions. Yvonne passed away unexpectedly on December 21, 2009 at the Coteau des Prairies Hospital, Sisseton, SD.

Yvonne is survived by her daughter, Randi Baker, of Sisseton, SD, two sisters, Barbara and husband Milton Owen of Sisseton, SD and Patricia Bernard of Peever, SD; one brother, John and wife, Dani Two Stars Jr. of Peever, SD; two granddaughters, Justus Two Stars of Sioux Falls, SD and Kenzie Bearhead of Sisseton, SD, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents, one son Jai; two sisters, Shirley Blacksmith Owen and Arvena Two Stars.
