James (Jim) Herschel Cooley, 70, of Yankton, died Monday, June 4, 2007, at his home in Yankton, South Dakota.
James Herschel Cooley was born June 18, 1936, in Huron, South Dakota to Herschel and Pearl (Gunderson) Cooley. He graduated from Huron High School in 1954, and attended the University of South Dakota where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business in 1957. He married Marilyn Ann Novotny on December 3, 1957 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He lived in Yankton for over forty years where he owned and operated Jay Vending Company.
Jim is survived by his loving wife Marilyn and children, James (Iliana) Cooley of Las Cruces, NM, Karen Cooley of Carlsbad, CA, Kellie Koletzky (Dave Poppe) of Yankton, and Lia Kay Azeal of Venice, CA. He also survived by his grandchildren Danny Koletzky of Yankton, Dusty Koletzky (Sherri Fuks) of Yankton, Marshall Cooley of Boise, ID, Michelle Cooley (Owen Diamond) of Sioux City, IA, and Johna (Cooley) Koch of Eagle, ID, and great-grandchildren Caid Koletzky, Cavan Cooley, and an unborn grandson expected in August, 2007.
Jim was preceded in death by his son, John Cooley, infant son, Christopher Cooley, parents Herschel and Pearl Cooley, an infant grandson Ronald Koletzky, Jr., in-laws Wes and Elsie Novotny, sister Mary McCandless, and twin brothers Kirk and Kent Cooley.
Jim's wish was to have his body donated to the USD School of Medicine (Sanford School of Medicine). No formal services are planned, but the family is holding a gathering of Jim's friends and family to celebrate his life on Saturday, June 9, 2007 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at his home. Arrangements in care of Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, SD.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the H.H.T. (Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia) Foundation International, Inc. at P.O. Box 329, Monkton, MD 21111 or the Benedictine Health Foundation, 1000 West Fourth Street, Suite 14, Yankton, SD 57078 directed to Hospice and/or Home Health Care programs.

Eugene James Carda, age 61, of Sioux Falls, SD formerly of Tabor, SD passed away June 4, 2007 at his home in Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 9, 2007 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, SD with the Rev. Joe Puthenkulathil celebrating. A rosary and scripture service will be held at 7:00 PM on Friday, June 8, 2007 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, SD. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory of Tabor, SD.
Honorary pallbearers will be Pat Phillipi, Mike Phillipi, Denny Hallauer, Jamie Mennis, Don Carda and Ed Carda.
Eugene James Carda was born the 3rd son of Emil and Mamie (Sykora) Carda on September 26, 1945 in Tabor, SD. Eugene married Peggy Hamilton on September 26, 1967 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor. They moved to Vermillion where they resided until they moved to Iowa where they worked construction and concrete. They moved back to Tyndall, SD in 1968 and owned Carda Construction and later added Tyndall Concrete. They built many homes in the Tyndall area and poured many a yard of concrete.
Four children were born to Gene and Peg; Lonie Ann 1969, Chad James 1970, Holly Jean 1974 and Chip Edward Dwight 1978. Gene and Peg divorced in 1985 and Gene moved to Sioux Falls to work construction. Eugene was married in to Gail Malenke on January 18, 1995 in the Bahamas. Eugene was diagnosed with lung cancer in September of 2006.
Eugene is survived by Gail Malenke Carda; three stepsons, Travis of Sioux Falls, SD, Mike of Atlanta, GA, Dustin of Sioux Falls, SD; the mother of his children, Peggy Carda of Yankton, SD; 4 children and grandchildren, Lonie and her fiance Jon Fischer of Renner, SD, Dr. Chad and Dr. Laura Carda of Humboldt, SD and their children, Jack, Cassidy, Elise, Juliana, Eleah, Chase and Chance, Holly and Tim Giesen of rural Utica, SD and their children, April, Tony, Alexis and Aaron, Chip and Jenn Carda of Sioux Falls, SD and their twin sons, Chet and Chandler; 2 brothers, Don (Margaret) Carda of Tabor, SD, Eddie (Carol) of Indiana and his sister, Mary Ann (Dennis) Hallauer of Sioux Falls, SD.
Eugene will be cremated and a portion of his remains will be scattered privately and a portion will be buried near his parents in the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church Cemetery in Tabor, SD.

Franklin J. Cutts, age 80, of Yankton, died Sunday, April 15, 2007 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at Vangen Lutheran Church, Mission Hill, SD with Rev. Lance Lindgren officiating. Burial will be in the Vangen Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-9 PM, Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton with a scripture service at 8:00 PM officiated by Rev. Nelson Stone. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Jay Cutts, James Urban, Terry Corth, Bernie Goeden, Tom Yaggie and Donn Medeck. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren Aaron and Matthew Clark, Amy (Urban) Brady and Erin (Urban) Fossell; Sara (Corth) Vetter and Lori (Corth) Major; Amy (Goeden) Schander, Anna (Goeden) Hardy, and Tessa (Goeden) Hansen; Jason, Joe, Jim, Jennifer Yaggie and Janelle (Yaggie) Brenden; Franklin, Robbie and George Cutts.
Frank was born on October 4, 1926 in Yankton, South Dakota to William M. and Mabel (Coates) Cutts. He was raised on the family dairy farm near Mission Hill and attended school for 11 years in Mission Hill, graduating from Yankton High School. Following graduation, he entered the Army, attached to the Air Corps, and was stationed in Adak, Alaska. While in the Army he won the Golden Gloves Boxing Championship for his weight class. Following his discharge from the Army he married Ruby L. Long on June 1, 1948 at Vangen Lutheran Church in Mission Hill. He returned to farming for 2 years before he purchased and operated the Mission Hill Locker for 11 years. In 1963, he became a representative for Bankers Life of Des Moines (The Principal Group). He qualified to become a member of the Bankers Life Hall of Fame. His love for farming was fulfilled when he returned to the Cutts' Farm where he worked with his son Jay with the farming and cattle operation. He was a member of Vangen Lutheran Church and served as president and held other offices through the years. He was a member of the Lutheran Outdoors Bible Camp Board for 17 years, sharing his love and concern for youth. He and his wife were Luther League sponsors for many years. He was a member of Kiwanis, and the Tri-Valley Barbershop Chorus of Viborg, South Dakota.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby of Yankton, five children: Sheila (James) Urban, Pierre, SD; Sue (Terry) Corth, Rapid City, SD; Robin (Bernie) Goeden, Yankton, Alecia (Tom) Yaggie; and Jay (LeAnne) Cutts of Mission Hill; 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; a brother William R. Cutts of Mankato, MN and a sister-in-law Elaine Cutts Meyer of Tuscon, AZ.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert, sister Jean and sons-in-law Kenneth Clark and Martin Gertonson.

Richard Jerome Karolevitz, age 76 of Tabor passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, May 18, 2007 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor, SD with Rev. Joe Puthenkulathil officiating. Burial will be in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery with military graveside rites by Kortan-Hatwan American Legion Post #183, Tabor. Visitations will be from 3-9 PM, Thursday, May 17, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Home, Tabor with a 7:00 PM scripture service followed by a rosary. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Jamie, Justin and Jesse Hajek, Jennifer Blalark, and Ryan, Angela, Amanda and Andrea Iwansky.
Richard was born November 12, 1930 to Leo and Lorraine (Gardner) Karolevitz in Tabor, SD. He graduated from Tabor High School. He served in the United States Army in the Korean War from 1952-1954. After his honorable discharge, he farmed with his father in the Tabor area. On May 17, 1954, he was united in marriage to Ione Sternhagen at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Tyndall, SD. Together they farmed and operated a livestock and grain farm until retiring and moving into Tabor in 1999. He served on the Rural Fire District Board, was a member of the Kortan-Hatwan American Legion Post #183, and was a lifetime member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor where he served as an usher. He enjoyed spending time with his family and attending his children and grandchildren's activities. He also enjoyed his collection of toy tractors.
Thankful for having shared his life are his wife, Ione of Tabor, SD; daughters: Kris (Wayne) Hajek of Tyndall, SD and Karen (Roger) Iwansky of Columbus, NE; sons; Jim (Lori) and Jeff all of Tabor, SD; 8 grandchildren: Jamie Hajek and special friend Nikki Evenson, Jennifer and Cory Blalark, Justin Hajek, Jesse Hajek, and Ryan, Angela, Amanda, and Andrea Iwansky; his siblings: Carmen (Romaine) Pesicka of Shelby, NE, Shirley (Lee) Hroza of Columbus, NE, Maxine Karolevitz of Rapid City, SD, Allen (Agnes) Karolevitz of Lesterville, SD, and Leona Taylor of Mt. Clemens, MI and many nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, James, and a nephew, Michael Hroza.

Dorothy (Scheuring) Brewer, age 90 of Yankton passed away Tuesday, May 08, 2007 at the Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, May12, 2007 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be approximately 1:30 PM in the St. John's Cemetery in Beresford, SD. Visitations will be from 4-8 PM, Friday, May 11, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a 7:00 PM rosary followed by a 7:30 scripture service.
She was born Dorothy Margaret McManus in Presho, South Dakota on August 16, 1916, the only child of Edmund Raleigh McManus and Alice Harrington McManus. She grew up in Presho and Mitchell, SD, graduated from Duschene College in Omaha, He where she received a Bachelor's Degree in English. She taught high school English in Meckling, and then moved to Beresford where she lived for 24 years, driving to Irene to teach English there. She moved to Vermillion where she lived for 10 years and earned a Master's Degree in French from the University of South Dakota, and continued teaching in the Gayville/Volin school district. She lived the last 30 years of her life in Yankton.
In addition to enjoying playing cards, working crossword puzzles, reading and attending plays and concerts, over the years she participated in several organizations including Catholic Daughters and the Women's Federated Club. At one time she was President of Yankton's Literacy Council and, with great love, volunteered her time to teach adults to read and recorded books for the blind. She lived in Caen, France for a summer with a French family in order to learn the language to be a better teacher. She was known for her beautiful singing voice, which she generously shared on many occasions for others to enjoy, including singing at the White House. Her greatest treasure was the people she loved: her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
She is preceded in death by her first husband, Leo N. Scheuring of Beresford, SD, and an infant son, Theodore. She is survived by children, Mary (Charles) Mahoney of Dunnellon, FL, Ed Scheuring of Washington, DC, Ann (Michael) Hill of St. Paul, MN, Michael (Charlotte) Scheuring of Yankton, Tom Scheuring of Yankton, and Jim Scheuring of Vancouver, WA, as well as six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She is also preceded in death by her second husband, Chauncey E. Brewer of Yankton, and stepson, Bob Brewer, and her step-son-in-law, Ole Christiansen. She is survived by her step-daughter, Phyllis Christiansen of Yankton, two step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
Requests are being made for Masses, or donation to the American Diabetes Association, Omaha Office, 14216 Dayton Circle, Suite 6, Omaha, NE 68137.

Constance "Connie" Benck, age 83, of Yankton died Monday, May 21, 2007 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 25, 2007 at 1:00 PM at Kostel Funeral Chapel in Yankton, SD with Rev. Paul Opsahl officiating. Burial will be in the Bloomfield Cemetery, Bloomfield, Nebraska at approximately 2:15 PM. Visitation will be from 6:00 - 9:00 PM at Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton on Thursday, May 24, 2007 with a prayer service at 7:30 PM. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral chapel.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Benck, Brian Benck, Jim Benck, Todd Adleman, Christine Adleman, Lisa Robinson, Gayle Pierce, Debbie Benck and Steven Benck.
Connie was born on April 13, 1924 to Sidohr and Inger (Fenne) Skutley in Racine, Wisconsin. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In her young adult years she joined the Second Congregational Church in Beloit, WI where she sang in the choir. She was a very proud member of the National Honor Society and still has her pin. Connie married the love of her life, Clarence Benck, on December 8, 1945 in Beloit, WI. Their union is blessed with one daughter, Lynn Diane Stremcha; 4 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren all residing in Eau Claire, WI.
Connie loved and was an expert at knitting. She loved to read and play Uno, Connie would become upset at getting the draw 4 card. In the course of her husband's employment as a engineer in plant manufacturing and equipment for the pulp and paper industry a transfer to Portland, OR was made where Connie got interested in creating jewelry from polished natural stones. Beachcombing for agates was a great delight. A desire after retirement to be near family brought the move to Yankton.
Connie will be sorely missed by all those who loved her and whose lives were touched by her presence during her walk through the valley of life.
Thankful for having shared in her life are her husband, Clarence of Yankton; daughter, Lynn Stremcha; 4 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren all of Eau Claire, WI and by her beloved 105 year old mother-in-law, Emma Benck.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Andrew Stremcha; son-in-law, Ronald Stremcha and 2 sisters.

Thomas J. Sykora, age 92, of Yuma, AZ died Friday, January 26, 2007. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM on Thursday, February 1, 2007 at St. George's Catholic Church in Scotland, SD with Rev. Mathew Vazhappilly officiating. Burial will be in the St. George Cemetery, Scotland, SD. Visitations will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at Kostel Funeral Home in Tabor, SD with a prayer service and rosary at 7 PM and will resume one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Wednesday. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Tabor, SD.
Tom was born November 8, 1914 to Tom J. Sykora I and Agnes Zitka in Tabor, SD. As a young man he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He later married Albina Kozel in August of 1941 at St. George's Catholic Church in Scotland, SD. After their marriage they lived on a farm near Tabor. Albina later chose to reside in Sotland and Yankton. On July 5, 1998, his daughter, Sandra passed away. Tom continued to farm near Tabor until late 2002. Before Tom's death, he lived with his sons Thomas in Eagan, MN and Terry in Calexico, CA until the time of his death.
Tom's memory is cherished by his two sons, Terry Sykora and Milly Tham of Calexico, CA, Thomas Sykora of Eagan, MN; 7 grandchildren, Jackie Sykora, Tom (Kari) Sykora, Michael (Beth) Sykora, Sacha Sykora, Alex Sykora, Tina (Tim) Jensen, Bill Jensen; 6 great grandchildren, Craig Jensen, Dillion Logue, Justin Logue, Kassandra Jensen, Isabella Jensen and Diamond Aragon.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sandra Jensen; a great granddaughter, Dominque Miranda and his former wife, Albina Sykora.

Kathleen Mary Loecker, age 60, of Yankton, SD passed away on Friday, January 26, 2007 at her home after a courageous fight with cancer. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. The burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton. Visitations will be 3:00 to 9:00 PM, Tuesday at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a scripture service and DVD tribute at 7:30 PM. Pallbearers will be her nephews Nick Becker, Jess Becker, Mark Loecker, Jeff Loecker, Adam Loecker, and Mike Berg. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of her volleyball team.
Kathy was born February 11, 1946 in Sleepy Eye, MN to Edgar and Margaret (Lattimer) Becker. Kathy graduated from Worthington Senior High School of Worthington, MN and later graduated from Mount Marty College with a BS in Nursing in 1968. Kathy married Romain (Red) Loecker on September 6, 1969 in Yankton, SD. She worked at the Human Services Center and more recently at Impact capping off 38 years of nursing service to the Yankton area. She enjoyed reading, bowling, playing volleyball, golfing, and spending time with those she loved.
Kathy's memory will be cherished forever by her husband "Red" of Yankton, SD; sons, Todd (Cynthia) Loecker of Aberdeen, SD and Lance (Deanna) Loecker of Yankton, SD; daughter Stacey (Rob) Kramer of Sacramento, CA; 4 grandchildren, Jared, Landen, Gavin, Gabe, and a granddaughter is expected; father Edgar Becker of Yankton, SD, one brother Patrick (Annette) Becker of Colorado Springs, CO; and sister Cecilia (John) Rongstad of Beulah, WY. She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Becker.
Memorials are directed to Avera Sacred Heart Hospice; 501 Summit Street; Yankton, SD 57078.

James Kohles, age 67, of Yankton died as a result of an automobile accident Monday, January 29, 2007. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, February 17th, 2007 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton, SD. Burial will be in the St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Crofton, NE with military rites by the American Legion Post # 128 of Crofton, NE. A lunch will follow the committal service at the St. Rose of Lima Parish Hall in Crofton. Visitations will be from 4-9 PM, Friday, February 16th, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Home in Yankton with a 7:00 PM rosary followed by a 7:30 PM scripture service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Myrna Jensen, age 71 of Yankton, South Dakota passed away November 18, 2006 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital. Funeral services will be 3:00 pm, Friday, November 24, 2006 at Kostel Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Lund, officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, November 24, 2006 from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the Yankton City Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Aaron Kruse, Brandon Kruse, Mark Jensen, Doug Jensen Jr., Ronnie Andersen and Wayne Brunke.
Myrna Jean Jensen was born January 6, 1935 to Oscar and Eva (Sumner) Brunke in Bloomfield, NE. Myrna graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1953. She married Lyle Jensen on April 15, 1954 in Yankton. Myrna worked at the Human Health Service Center for 37 years and held many positions during her time there. Lyle passed away September 25, 1990. She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Elks and VFW Auxiliary as well as Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton. Myrna will be remembered for her love of knitting, shopping, jewelry and her collection of purses and shoes.
She will be dearly missed by her sons, Douglas (Marge) Jensen of Yankton, Robert (Bob) Jensen of Yankton; daughter, Janet (John) Kruse of Kansas City, MO; 5 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sisters, Lana (Elden) Olson of Sioux City, IA and Marilyn Andersen of Sioux Falls, SD.
Myrna is preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; parents, Oscar and Eva Brunke; daughter, Jolene Jensen and brothers, Keith Brunke and Duane Brunke.
