William "Bill" C. Hlavac, age 93 of David City, NE and formerly of Utica, SD passed away Sunday, August 26, 2007 at the St. Joseph's Villa in David City, NE. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 AM, Thursday, August 30, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Chapel in Tabor, SD with Rev. Joseph Puthenkulathil officiating. Burial will be in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Tabor. Visitations will be from 5-9 PM, Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Home, Tabor with a 7:00 PM scripture service followed by a rosary. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers are Bob Cabalka, Tim Hlavac, Gary Hlavac, Mike Hlavac, David Hlavac and Tony Hlavac.
William was born November 12, 1913 to Charles and Clara (Barkl) Hlavac in Yankton County. He attended rural school while growing up. He married Lillian Manas on May 11, 1936 and through this union they had three children. They farmed until his wife passed away in 1961. He then worked construction and farming until he retired in David City, Nebraska. William enjoyed fishing trips, hunting in his early years and visiting with friends and relatives.
Survivors include his Daughter, Janene (Laddie) Cabalka of Yankton; Son Vern (Gladys) Hlavac of Bemidji, MN; three sisters Elsie VanDriel of Yankton, Tillie Lane of Yankton and Evelyn Parks of Sioux City; seven Grandchildren, thirteen Great-Grandchildren, and two Great-Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, Duane and three great grandchildren.

Helen V. Lubbers, age 91, of Yankton, passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2007, at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, December 1, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, with Rev. David Garza officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery. Visitations will be 5 to 8 PM, Friday, (today) November 30, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Brad, Bryan, Charles, and Curtis Lubbers, Kenneth Kaiser, and Terry Foxhoven.
Helen was born November 12, 1916 at Mission Hill, SD to William W. and Anna Mary (Thompson) Brown. She grew up in Yankton attended grade school and then three years of Yankton High School. She married Ray M. Lubbers on June 8, 1937 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, SD. She worked many years at the Stuelpnagels Egg Processing Plant, Yankton. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church.
Helen is survived by Donna Rae (daughter) Lyle Segelberg of Omaha, NE and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, one sister, and a niece. Memorials are directed to the Country Retreat Wing of Avera Sister James Care Center; 2111 West 11th Street; Yankton, SD 57078.

Marian G. Schiedel, age 97, of Yankton, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Friday, November 30, 2007 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, SD with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Fordyce, NE. Visitations will be 7 to 9 PM, Thursday, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a scripture services at 7:30 PM. Pallbearers will be Barry Schiedel, Don Schiedel, Steve Schiedel, Ed Lammers, and Steve Frick.
Marian was born March 12, 1910 at New York, NY and with her mother unable to provide for her, she found herself a passenger on the Orphan Train headed west. She was adopted by her new, very loving parents, John and Anna Lammers of Fordyce, NE. She grew up in the Fordyce area and graduated from Cedar High School at Hartington, NE. She attended Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD. Marian married Harry Schiedel on March 10, 1934 and they made their home in the Fordyce area. She worked for a number of years at Gurneys, Newberrys and Tastee Treat. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She is survived by two sons; Gerald (Arlys) of Longwood, FL and Roger (Maija) of Colorado Springs, CO; 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Richard A. Stemper, age 63, of Yankton, SD passed away at his home in his sleep from an unexpected heart attack. Sunday, November 25, 2007. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Friday, November 30, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with Rev. Bill Van Gerpen officiating. Burial will be in the Tyndall Cemetery, Tyndall, SD, at approximately 11:45 AM Friday morning. Lunch to follow the committal service at the Corral Restaurant, Tyndall, SD. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Trevor Grimme, Bill Conkling, Jr., Ron Zimmerman, Kevin Stepka, James Torsney, and Jim Kostal.
Richard was born April 16, 1944 at Yankton, SD to Andrew and Viola (Schmoll) Stemper. He grew up in the Tabor and Tyndall area attending country school through the eighth grade and then attended both Tyndall and Tabor High Schools. Richard was employed at Muller Industries in Yankton for the past nine years. Some of his previous employers include John Morrell's, Wilson Trailer, Cimpls, and Gurney's. Richard farmed near Tyndall from 1968 - 1991. He loved farming, fishing, and driving around to look at the countryside. He also enjoyed reading magazines about fishing and nature.
Richard is survived by two sons; Doug (Suzanne) of Tabor, SD and Brian of Winona, MN; one daughter Jodi Stemper of Vermillion, SD; one granddaughter; Emily Stemper; three step-grandchildren; Josh, Zach, and Madison Schwartz; his mother Viola Stemper of Tyndall, SD; one sister Pam (Jim) Grimme of Yankton, SD; one niece, two nephews and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father Andrew Stemper, sister Sharon Stemper (in infancy) and grandparents.

William "Bill" Braunesreither, age 89, of Yankton, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at the Indianola Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Indianola, IA. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Monday, March 24, 2008 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Yankton, SD, with Rev. David Gunderson officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitations will be 5 to 8 PM, Sunday, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
William was born on 1 March 1919 in rural Utica, Yankton County to Gotthardt W. and Karolina (Schenk) Braunesreither. He was baptized at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Menno, SD on May 1919 and confirmed at Martinus Lutheran Church near Utica. He completed his elementary education at Huber School.
He married Evelyn Schweitzer of Freeman, SD on the 21st of May 1941. William and Evelyn farmed many years in Yankton County until retiring when they moved to Yankton. Evelyn died October 10, 1986.
He married Alice Mutschelknaus of Yankton, SD on 2 September 1988. Bill continued to farm for several years after moving to Yankton. He loved the land and continued to garden after he was unable to continue farm operations. They enjoyed their tours to various parts of the United States.
Bill had a deep desire to learn about his ancestors; his excellent memory of events, historical facts and personal knowledge of relatives prove invaluable to his brother Alpha as they researched, wrote and published the genealogy and more recently the family history.
His parents, three sisters Theresa Shorzman-Hathaway, Alice Mehrer and Lucille Greene, one brother Arthur Braunesreither and one nephew Marvin Braunesreither preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife Alice of Indianola, IA, one brother Alpha and wife Loretta Braunesreither of Rapid City, SD, one sister Betty Pierce of St. Helena, NE, sister-in-law Josephine Braunesreither, along with seven nieces, eight nephews, one step daughter Luana (Dennis) Shull, two step granddaughters and two step great grandchildren of Indianola, IA.

Karen K. Bruget, age 60, of Yankton, SD, died early Saturday, March 22, 2008 Avera Yankton Care Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Vangen Lutheran Church, Mission Hill, with Rev. Lance Lindgren officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, Mission Hill. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, is in charge of arrangements.
Karen was born December 9, 1947 in Yankton, SD to Leo And Wilma (Inch) Bruget. She has been a lifelong resident of Yankton where she attended Bruget School for eight years and then special education classes at the Yankton Middle School. She loved playing cards, bowling and being with her family. She was Secretary-Treasurer at Sunday school at Vangen Lutheran Church for several years. She was a member of WELCA at St. John's Lutheran Church. She lived on the family farm with her parents until they moved to Yankton after the farm was sold. She lived inYankton moving to Avera Sunset Manor Care Center, Irene, in May of 2001 and then in November of 2001 moved to the Avera Yankton Care Center where she resided until her death..
Karen is survived by her mother Wilma of Yankton, God Mother Ruby Cutts of Yankton, SD and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her father in 1983.

Mary Ann Simek, age 41, of Yankton, SD passed away unexpectedly at home of apparent heart failure on Monday, March 24, 2008. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Friday, March 28, 2008 at St. John's Lutheran Church, with Rev. David Gunderson officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery. Visitations will be 5 to 9 PM, Thursday, March 27, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, and then one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be David Carda, Joe Carda, Steve Metteer, Brad Metteer, Rodney Swensen, and Dean Gustad.
Mary Ann was born February 28, 2967 in Tyndall, SD to Norman and Barbara (Weisser) Carda. She attended school at Gayville/Volin and Yankton High School graduating in 1985. She attended and graduated from Stewarts School of Hair Styling in 1987. Mary Ann married Doug Simek August 1, 1992 this union included a stepson Mike Simek and a daughter Amber Rose Simek. She enjoyed riding motorcycles and camping with her husband, family and friends. Her talent for interior decorating was obvious at her home and business. Her friendly smile and love for family and friends will be greatly missed. Mary owned and operated the "Hair Shack" in Yankton, SD.
Mary is survived by her husband Doug of Yankton, SD; daughter Amber at home; step son Mike (Tami) and granddaughter Lilyana all of Sturgis, SD; her parents Norman and Barbara Carda of Yankton, SD; brothers David (Sarah) Carda and their children Samuel, Lucas, and Anna all of Yankton, SD and Joe (Alonna) Carda of Omaha, NE. Her grandparents preceded her in death.

John A. Ament, age 69, of Yankton, died Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Memorial services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 29, 2007 at the United Church of Christ (Congregational), Yankton, with Rev. Joe Schulte officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will take place at a later date. Visitations will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, is in charge of arrangements. Honorary pallbearers will be Lucas, Jesse, and Benjamin Gustad, and Brittany, Austin, Autumn Ament.
John was born to Joseph and Mercedes (Picotte) Ament on September 5, 1938 in Wagner. He attended grade school and graduated from Marty Mission, Marty, SD in 1957. He served in the US Air Force and then four years in the National Guard and married Ardyth Ptak on February 16, 1963. He attended USD (Springfield) and graduated with a BSE degree and also graduated from USD Vermillion with a Masters Degree in guidance and counseling. John worked at Job Service for 18 years before his health forced him to retire.
His hobbies included hunting and fishing and spending time each year at the cabin in Minnesota with all the children and grandchildren. His family was his greatest joy.
His memory is cherished by his wife Ardyth of Yankton, SD; children: Elaine (Dean) Gustad of Volin, SD, David (Barb) Ament of Yankton, SD, and Steve Ament of Yankton, SD; 6 grandchildren; one brother Tom (Kathy) Ament of Rapid City, SD; four sisters, Frances (Dick) Hatfield of Black Hawk, SD, Grace Gorden of Soldotna, AK, Marcy (Bob) Cook of Casper, WY, and Jean Brunkhorst of Tampa, FL; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Richard H. "Dick" Andersen, age 65, of Hurley, SD, passed away Wednesday, April 02, 2008 at the Freeman Hospital Hospice, Freeman, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, April 5, 2008, at St. Boniface Catholic Church (Idlywilde), rural Freeman, SD. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitations will be 5 to 9 PM, Friday at St. Boniface Church (Idlywilde) with a rosary and scripture service beginning at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be Ross Frederickson, Leland Andersen, Bill Andersen, Jim Andersen, John Andersen, and Jason Sherman.
Dick was born April 14, 1942 at Viborg, SD to Leslie and Grace (Ludens) Andersen. He grew up in the Viborg area and attended Viborg High School. He was a graduate of Salem St. Mary's High School. After high school he farmed near Viborg and did farm to market trucking with his father for about four years. He then moved to his present acreage near Turkey Ridge and engaged in over the road trucking for 40 years. He trucked for various companies, the latest being Crete Carriers located out of Lincoln, NE. After retiring from trucking, he worked part time for Hefty Seed, Freeman, SD.
He is survived by six sons; Chris (Linda) of Murdock, NE, Joe (Cara) of Freeman, SD, Keith (Lisa) of Freeman, SD, Jeremy of Yankton, SD, Josh (Shelly) of Freeman, SD and Mike (Emily) of Freeman, SD; one daughter Teresa Spader of Freeman, SD; his ex-wife Evelyn of Freeman, SD; 12 Grandchildren; one brother Duane of Viborg, SD; one sister Mary (Darrell) Frederickson of Viborg, SD; and one sister-in-law Linda Andersen of Viborg, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gary and sister Sr. Celine.

Robert J. Balentine, age 84 of Yankton, died Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Monday, March 3, 2008 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Ken Bain officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, with military graveside rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791. Visitations will be 6 to 9 PM, Sunday, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a memorial video tribute and then a scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be sons, Jim and Mike Balentine, and grandchildren: Chad Sedlacek, Brian Sedlacek, Randy Sedlacek and Angela Bitzer.
Bob was born July 30, 1923 at Riverside, RI to Madelyn Balentine. He was baptized, confirmed, and raised in Riverside, RI. He joined the Navy in 1941 and then transferred to the Air Force in 1950. He married Ione Johnson February 3, 1945 in Minneapolis, MN. Bob retired from the Air Force after 22 years, in 1963 and the family moved to Yankton, SD. Bob worked at Bauer Electric for 14 years. He then went on the road to work at power plants in Wyoming, Montana, and Utah. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the Moose Lodge as well as the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 231 and the local Cessna 170 Association. Bob loved airplanes and loved flying his own plane.
Bob's memory is cherished by his wife Ione of Yankton, SD; sons Jim of Sioux City, IA and Mike (Pam) of Escanaba, MI; daughter Colleen (Ken) Sedlacek of Tabor, SD; six grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and sister Bette Wilson.

Vivian Bierle, age 95, of Yankton, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at the Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital, Scotland, SD. Funeral will be 10:00 AM, Monday, March 31, 2007, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Yankton, with Rev. David Gunderson officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery. Visitations will be 5 to 9 PM, Sunday, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Randy Bierle, Darrin Bierle, Dean Bierle, Douglas Bierle, Terry Gravholt, and Chris Kerr. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Gregg, Warren Wagner, Mark Kocer, Larry Skorepa, Hubert Zimmerman, and David Parker.
Vivian was born July 9, 1912 to George and Mary (Kolda) Vanorney at Lesterville, SD. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school in the Lesterville area. She married Henry Bierle on September 24, 1929 at Martinus Lutheran Church, Lesterville, and they farmed near Lesterville until 1961 when they moved to Utica, SD. After retiring from farming, she began work at the Human Services Center, Yankton, where she worked for a number of years. She enjoyed many hobbies of which gardening and her plants were a favorite. Vivian spent many hours fishing, crocheting, sewing, baking and cooking. She loved playing cards with her family and friends, especially when she won. Vivian loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and visits from her many family and friends.
Vivian's memory is cherished by her two sons; Arnold (Naomi) of Yankton, SD and Richard (Judy) of Utica, SD; son-in-law Robert Gravholt of Lesterville, SD; one sister Evelyn Bierle of Lesterville, SD; sister-in-law Alice Vanorney of Scotland, SD, 15 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Shirley, granddaughter Deanne, brother Edwin Vanorney, and sister Ruby Bierle.

Ella M. Cahoy, age 98 of Tabor, SD passed away Monday, December 10, 2007 at the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center in Tyndall, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, December 14, 2007 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor, SD with Rev. Joe Puthenkulathil officiating and Rev. Gerald Thury and Msgr. Carlton Hermann concelebrating. Visitations will be 3-9 PM, Thursday, December 13, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Home in Tabor with a 7 PM prayer service with a rosary to follow. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home in Tabor. Pallbearers will be Roger Svanda, David Ruman, Ron Maruska, Dennis Cahoy, Gregg Cahoy, and Mark Cahoy.
Ella was born October 29, 1909 to Emil and Matilda (Nedved) Pishek in Geddes South Dakota. She attended Blacknick Rural School through the 8th grade near Tabor. Ella married Rudolph Cahoy on June 28, 1926 at St. Wenceslaus Church in Tabor. Rudolph and Ella farmed 4 1/2 miles N.W. of Tabor until 1969 when they moved to Tabor. Rudolph passed away in 1984. Ella moved into the Lidi Apartments in Tyndall, SD in 1991 and resided there until becoming a resident of the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center in Tyndall in 2003. She was a member of St Wenceslaus Church as well as the Altar and Rosary Society.
Ella is survived by her children Helen Maruska, Mesa, Arizona, Ed Cahoy of Tyndall, SD, Marie (Leonard) Hisek of Tyndall, SD, Marcy (Lumir) Ruman of Tyndall, SD, Steve (Janice) Cahoy of Tabor, SD, and Ray (Marilyn) Cahoy of Tabor, SD, and by 19 Grandchildren, 26 Great Grandchildren, 2 Great Stepchildren, and 6 Great Great Grandchildren. Her Step sisters Helen Thompson, Velma Klein, Marie Killian, and Norma Washburn all of Yankton, SD, Mae Cantrell of Anaheim, CA and a step brother James Krovoza of Aberdeen, SD.
She is preceded in death by her husband Rudolph, her parents, an infant son, 2 brothers, a son in law, 2 daughters in law, a grandson, a great granddaughter and 1 stepbrother.

Annabel A. Cox, age 92, of Menno passed away Monday, February 25, 2008 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, February 29, 2008 at the Olivet-United Methodist Church, Olivet, SD with Rev. Kathy Kluis officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery. Visitations will be 5 to 8 PM Thursday, February 28, 2008 at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno, SD. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Dale, Heath, and Zachary Thomsen, Tim Flint, Jason Preszler, and Victor Portolese.
Annabel was born February 21, 1916, at Olivet to Henry and Martha (Barth) Steffen. She graduated from Menno High School. She married Marvin Cox July 4, 1935. He died January 12, 1981. They farmed together north of Olivet until they retired and moved to Olivet, SD in 1978. She was a member of the Olivet United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Olivet Friendship Club. Her hobby was the love of making quilts.
She is survived by two daughters; Vernet (Hein) of Menno, SD and Latitia (Wes) Jordan of Mountlake Terrace, WA; four grandchildren; Skye (Dale) Thomsen, Kim (Tim) Flint, Kari (Victor) Portolese, and Jason (Amy) Preszler and eight great grandchildren Heath and Zachary Thomsen, Jamie and Dakota Flint, Jackie Portolese and Mia, Isaac, and Silas Preszler and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, three brothers, and a son-in-law.
