Josephine Kudrna, age 92 of Tabor died Friday, February 15, 2008 at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, February 21, 2008 at First United Methodist Church in Yankton with Rev. Dean Trapp officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories in Yankton. Visitations will be from 4-8 PM, Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Gary Kudrna, John L. Kudrna, Troy Skokan, Charles Stastny, Will Dangler, and Loy Gravholt.

Josephine Kudrna was born March 18, 1915, on the family farm near Lakeport in Yankton County to Fred J. Kaiser and Julia (Beran) Kaiser. She married Edward William Kudrna on January 11, 1938 at the Presbyterian Church near Tabor, SD.

Josephine lived her entire life in Tabor, SD apart from three years at the Black Hills Ordinance Depot near Hot Springs, SD in the early forties. She was a lifetime homemaker, and worked for fifteen years as a cook at Tabor High School where she retired in 1976. During her life, she loved cooking, sewing, bowling, sewing Czech costumed dolls and listening to music.

Survivors include her children, Edward and wife Brandi of Hanford, CA; Don and wife Gail of Tabor, SD; and Sandy (Mrs. Charles) Arbogast of Hillsboro, OR; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward on February 7, 1992; her parents; five brothers: Edward, Fred, John, Frank and Lawrence; and two sisters, Rose Kennedy and Agnes Lake.

Carol Larson, age 82, died Sunday, December 23, 2007 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Memorial services will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, December 29, 2007, at the Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, SD, with Rev. Paul Opsahl officiating. There will be time to greet the family after the services in the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory fellowship room.

Carol was born December 26, 1924, in Moville, IA, to Armour and Pearl (Davis) Payne. Carol attended Moville schools until 1938 when the family moved to Yankton. She graduated from Yankton High School in 1943.

On April 3, 1948, Carol married Charles Larson, Jr. in Fort Dodge, IA. They have resided in Yankton for the 59 years of their married life. During the 1950's and 60's Carol served as office secretary for the family business, The Larson Brothers Company.

Carol was a member of the United Church of Christ (Congregational). She served as President of the Yankton County Republican Women's Club and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband Charles of Yankton, SD; a daughter, Marty (Hal) McCain of Salina, KS; two granddaughters, Colleen McCain Nelson of Dallas, TX and Carrie J. McCain of West Des Moines, IA; her sister Dessa Taylor and brother, Dick Payne both of Yankton, SD.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Mark Larson, a sister Naomi Payne, and a brother, Chester Payne.

Memorials may be made to the Mark C. Larson Memorial Endowment in care of the University of South Dakota Foundation at 414 East Clark Street, Vermillion, SD, 57069 or to the Benedictine Health Foundation at 501 Summit Ave., Yankton, SD, 57078.

Donald J. Koranda, age 58, of Tabor, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at his home.

Memorial Services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2008 at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Tyndall, with Father Gerald Thury officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation is from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2008 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home in Tabor, with family present. Visitation will continue at 6 p.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Tyndall, until the rosary service at 7:15 p.m. followed by the prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Donald James Koranda was born on July 26, 1949 in Scotland, SD to Kenneth and Marie (Mae Chadim) Koranda. He grew up and lived in Tabor were he attended Tabor Elementary School. He graduated from Tabor High School in 1967. He then attended Universal Trade School, Omaha, NE where he studied Auto Body Repair and received his Associates Degree. He then opened Don's Body Shop, Tabor. He also farmed with his grandfather, Jim Koranda, and helped his father in the well drilling business.

He married Irene Varilek, May 6, 1972. Don worked for the Bon Homme School District for one year. In 1974, he purchased the repair part of Koranda Well Company. Ten years later, he purchased the drilling part of Koranda Well Company continuing as Third Generation in drilling and repair in Tabor for over 85 years.

Don served on the Tabor Town Board for several years. He was a member of the Tabor Fire Department for more than 20 years. He also served on the St. Leo's Parish Council.

Don was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing until his later years. He took pride in creating animated floats for Czech Days. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tease people, which sometimes earned him a slap on the arm or a kiss on the cheek. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also took great joy in observing wildlife in his daily travels.

Don was a colorful character who enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and socializing with friends.

Don is survived by his wife, Irene; son Michael Koranda, Tracy, MN, daughters, Karen (Russell) Bisson, Yankton, SD, and Kay Koranda (Eric Woodbeck), Tabor, SD, three grandchildren, Laura, Evan and "Suzi" and sister, Donna (Edward) Melichar, Omaha, NE, niece, Pam (Mike) Mason of Omaha, NE and their daughter, Claire, nephew, Ken (Cameo) Melichar of Hewitt, TX and their children, Ashlyn and Nathan; his aunts, Evelyn Sorensen of Yankton, SD, Ardith Howard of Graham, NC, and Rose Lyons of Yankton, SD.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and infant brother.

One of Don's requests was to not mourn his death but celebrate his life, so the family requests that joyful attire be worn.

Walter G. Lock, age 68 of Yankton passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. There will be no formal services held at this time. Cremation has taken place. Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton is in charge of the arrangements.

Walter Gerald Lock was born on June 8, 1939 to Gerald and Anastasia (Baran) Lock in New Lyme, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Miami University in Oxford, OH in 1960. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1961-1963 when he was honorably discharged. He was united in marriage to Margrit Koenig on October 3, 1970. His 30-year business career included positions with increasing responsibilities at Cleveland Overseas Corporation in Brussels, Belgium, LPM in Chicago, IL, Eaton Corporation in Cleveland, OH and Brussels, Belgium, and Holmes International in Chattanooga, TN. The last position, which brought him to Yankton, SD was as President at Portec, Construction Equipment Division from 1992-1995.

Those who will always cherish his memory are his wife, Margrit Lock of Yankton, SD; his son, Walter Andrew Lock of Dresden, Germany; his daughter, Carolyn (Tommy) Thompkins of Atlanta, GA; one grandson, Brock Connor Thompkins; a sister, Joan Hendersen of St. Pete's Beach, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Anastasia Lock, and grandparents, Arthur and Rose Lock and Walter and Anna Baran.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to: American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, Greater Midwest Affiliate, Memorials and Tributes Lockbox, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674 or to the Avera Yankton Care Center, 1212 West 8th Street, Yankton, SD 57078 for the benefit of the residents.

Mabel Lubbers, age 84, of Yankton, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2007 at Avera Wakonda Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Wakonda, SD. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, with Rev. Rod Veldhuizen officiating. Burial will be in the Czech National Cemetery, rural Tyndall, SD. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, is in charge of arrangements.

Mabel was born December 15, 1923 in Avon, South Dakota to Joseph and Emma (Rehurek) Obr. She grew up in the Avon area attending Lone Tree Country School. She graduated from Tyndall High School. She married Walter Lubers on October 14, 1951 in Avon, South Dakota. While living in Tyndall, SD she worked at Springfield College, Springfield, SD. In 1961, she and Walter moved to Huron, SD where she worked for the Federal Government and then later Northwestern Public Service retiring on December 31, 1988. Her husband, Walter, died January 8, 1984. In 1989, Mabel moved to Yankton, SD where she was an active member of Riverview Park Reformed Church. She was the past treasurer for both the Morning Glory Circle and the Reformed Church Women's Guild.

A sister-in-law Darlene Obr of Omaha, NE and many nieces and nephews survive Mabel. Her parents, husband, and one brother Joseph and two sisters Gladys and Dorothy preceded her in death.

Matilda "Tillie" Ann Mehrer, age 84 of Yankton died on Thursday, December 20, 2007 at the Lennox Good Samaritan Center in Lennox, SD. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, December 31, 2007 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Yankton, SD with Rev. Dave Gunderson officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories. Visitations will be from 2:00-4:00 PM, Sunday, December 30, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, SD. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

Tillie was born August 5, 1923 to Nicholas and Ella (Bornhoft) Bendt in Nashua, MN. She was raised in Campbell, MN where she attended country school and later graduated from Campbell High School. On September 19, 1942, Tillie was united in marriage to Walter Guthmiller. She was a very hard working and dedicated wife and mother raising four children. Her dedication to her family was unlimited, she sewed all their clothes by hand and always made sure they had everything they needed. One of her hobbies was piecing quilts together and she was very meticulous with every stitch. She worked as a physical therapy assistant at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. On October 22, 1972 Walter passed away. She then married Benjamin Mehrer on September 6, 1979. Together they managed the Marne Creek Apartments from 1979-1994. They enjoyed their time together camping and fishing but loved to watch baseball especially the Minnesota Twins. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and St. John's Lutheran Church.

Her memory will always be cherished by her children: Arlyn (Edward) Sayler of Sioux Falls, SD, Sharon (Fred) Sorensen of Rio Rancho, NM, and Bob (Tammy) Guthmiller of Centennial, CO; three sisters: Ella Bendt of Alexandria, MN, Bertha Krause of Great Falls, MT, and Hazel Dupree of Tillamook, OR; daughter-in-law, Lynn Guthmiller of Melbourne, FL; stepchildren: Harlen (Shirley) Mehrer of Elk River, MN and Bill Mehrer of Glenview, IL; step daughters-in-law, Darlene Mehrer of Troy, MI and Ramona Mehrer of Hinton, IA; nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, parents, son, Gary, three sisters: Grace, Gladys, and Lou; three brothers: Edward, Nicholas, and Ervin, stepsons, Ken and Bob, and a granddaughter.

Lucy T. Merkel, age 93 of Crofton, NE passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at the Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, March 29, 2008 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Menominee, NE with Rev. Michael Schmitz officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitations will be from 3-9 PM, Friday, March 28, 2008 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a 7:30 PM wake service and rosary. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are Craig, Troy, Jody, Wade, Ben, Chris Merkel, and Todd Becker, the grandsons of Lucy.

Lucy was born November 24, 1914 at Utica, SD to Albert and Lena (Heinish) Borgheiinck. She moved to Menominee, NE at age 5 and attended school at St. Boniface School, Menominee. Lucy married Emery Merkel February 6, 1936 at St. Boniface Catholic Church. They lived and farmed in the Crofton area. Lucy and her sister, Anna cleaned homes together for many years. Lucy was a member of the Christian Mothers and Ladies Guild of Menominee. She loved gardening, canning, baking especially cookies for all her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by one daughter, Marlene (Leon) Becker of Yankton, SD; five sons: Marvin (Patsy) Merkel of Kingman, AZ, Allen (Del Rae) Merkel of Littleton, CO, Charles (Judy) Merkel of Omaha, NE, Donny (Mary) Merkel of Littleton, CO and Rick (Pat) Merkel of Crofton, NE; 16 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Anna Kuehn and Rosella Tramp both of Yankton, SD; a brother, Alfred Borgheiinck of Fullerton, NE and many nieces and nephews.

Lucy was preceded in death by her husband on November 13, 1970, her parents, 2 brothers, Frank and Ambrose Borgheiinck, and 2 sisters, Martha Estes and Zita Amick.

Bernice Mettler, 79, of Menno died at the Menno-Olivet Care Center in Menno on Monday, April 14, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral service will be 10:30 am, Friday, April 18, 2008 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Menno with the Rev. David Ellis officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery, Menno, SD. Visitations will be Thursday, April 17th from 1-9 pm at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home in Menno with the family present from 6:30-9 pm. A scripture service will begin at 7:30 pm. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Steven Knodel, Keith Knodel, Kelly Knodel, Brad Knodel, Rick Mettler, and Darus Mettler.

Bernice Edna (Knodel) Mettler was born on November 24, 1928 on a farm southwest of Freeman, SD to Reinhold and Martha (Heckenlaible) Knodel. She was baptized in infancy on January 20, 1929 at Trinity Lutheran Heilbronn near Freeman, by Rev. G. Schaefer. She was confirmed on June 13, 1943 by the Rev. R.R. Schulz at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Menno, South Dakota. Bernice attended country school at Valley District 7 and Freeman High School.

Bernice was united in marriage to Reno Mettler on September 4, 1949 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Menno, by Rev. Hans Weidenman. To this union, a son, Michael was born on June 23, 1956. He died on November 23, 1956. Together Reno and Bernice farmed in the Menno area until 1993 when they moved into Menno.

Bernice served her church in several ways and also on many committees. She enjoyed baking, gardening, and crocheting. Together Reno and Bernice enjoyed dancing whenever they were given the opportunity. She loved spending time with her nephews and nieces and their families. She enjoyed teaching them how to make traditional family dishes and educating them on family history. They will all remember her fondly as someone who loved them unconditionally.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Michael, her two brothers, Raymond and Clifford, and a brother-in-law Leroy Mettler.

She is survived by her husband Reno, Menno; nephews and nieces Steven (Shirley) Knodel, Scottsbluff, NE; Keith (Betsy) Knodel, Freeman; Karen (Jon) Nealis, Lexington, KY; Kelly Knodel, Freeman; Patricia (Jim) McMahon, Redlands, CA; Marilyn (Lanny) Long, Albion, NE; James (Eileen) Knodel, West Point, NE; Barbara (Terry) Buechler, Fort Collins, CO; Rick Mettler, Lincoln, NE; Darus (Laura) Mettler, Norfolk, NE; and Philip (Elisa) Heckenlaible, Sioux Falls, SD; many great nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law Viella Knodel, Freeman; Verna Knodel, Lexington, KY; Kathleen Mettler, Menno; Priscilla (Ray) Heckenlaible, Menno, as well as many friends.
