George Means, passed away peacefully on the evening of September 16, 2008, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton in the company of his beloved wife, Kay and his daughter, Barb. George has been surrounded with loving care by his family: Jim Means and Roberta Ambur; Berry and Jackie Means and Barbara Means Fraser. Additionally, he is survived by two granddaughters: Stephanie Means and Alison Means Feddes and her husband, Scott Feddes, two great grandsons: Aidan and Asher Feddes, Barb's husband Bob Fraser. George was preceded in death by his brother, Mike Means and sisters, Vera Means Christiansen and Vivian Means Williams.

George Means was born February 1, 1919 in Carthage, South Dakota to Loren Luther Means and Aura Flanagan Means. When the city official visited their home to create the birth certificate, his mother named him Loren Luther Means, Jr. When LL Means, Sr. returned, he renamed his new son, George. So, although the official document states Loren Luther Means Jr., he has always been George. His family moved to Yankton when George was ten so that his older sister Vera could attend Yankton College. George followed graduating from Yankton College in 1941.

In 1960, George and Kay opened and operated George Means Fine Apparel for Men. Their son Jim became a partner and subsequently bought the business. George was elected to the Yankton City Council in 1970's, and became Mayor. He ran for the State Legislature in 1984, and served three terms. He volunteered his time generously to boards and associations among which he served as Chairman on the Sacred Heart Hospital Board. He was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church of Yankton.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Christ Episcopal Church in Yankton with Father Jim Pearson officiating. Arrangements in care of the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, SD.

Clifford E. Mettler, age 82 of Menno, died on Thursday June 19, 2008 at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Funeral service will be at 10:30am, Monday June 23, 2008 at the Zion Reformed Church, Menno, SD, with Rev. Scott Henry officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery, Menno. Visitations will be from 2-9pm, Sunday June 22, 2008, at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Tom Fischer, Barry Mettler, Arlo Rohlfs, Jim Fanning, Terry Huber, and Dewayne Herrboldt.

Clifford E. Mettler was born on June 26, 1925 to Christ F. and Emma (Roduner) Mettler northeast of Menno, SD. He was baptized as an infant. He attended rural school and was confirmed by Rev. Bodenman. He married Gertrude Wollman on October 26, 1947 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Menno, SD. They celebrated 60 years of marriage. During their marriage, they acquired 2 children, Jan and Clyde.

Clifford enjoyed farming, raising horses, serving on the board of directors for the Rural Electric Association on the local, state, and national levels for several years, and serving on the board of directors of the Farmers Union Oil Company and several other boards. After retirement, Clifford loved to spend his time at the Pioneer Power Show. Clifford was a loving and devoted husband and father. He was a lifetime member of Zion Reformed Church where he also serves as a Trustee and Elder and Sunday School Teacher.

Those that were grateful to share his life were his wife Gertrude Mettler; daughter Jan (Ruben) Torres and son Clyde Mettler, all of Menno, SD, 2 grandchildren Tyler and Sakura; 2 sisters Delores (Walter) Wollman, Tripp, SD, and Dorothea Prouty, Sioux Falls, SD; a brother Harvey (Margaret) Mettler, Sahuarita, AZ; 2 sisters-in-law Dorothy (Orville) Huber, Clayton, SD, and Esther Herrboldt, Akron, IA, and many loved nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law; a half brother Gideon C. Mettler; 3 half sisters Thilma Guthmiller, Idella Goehring, and Edna Aisenbrey and his brother-in-law and best friend, Elmer Wollman.

Dorothy C. Nedved, age 86, of Tabor, SD, passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2009 at St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, February 6, 2009 at St Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, with Rev. Joe Puthenkulathil officiating. Burial will be at the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Visitations will be 5-8 PM, Thursday, February 5, 2009 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Tabor, with a 7 PM scripture service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral chapel. Pallbearers will be Darryl Becvar, Justin Young, Carrie Young, Todd Frank and Malena Frank.

Dorothy Claire was born on August 12, 1922 at the family homestead near Avon, SD to Paul and Pauline (Souhrada) Becvar. She attended the Daisy Country School and worked at various jobs including housekeeping in the area. Dorothy married John A. Nedved on November 25, 1952 at Dante, SD. After marriage, she kept up the home and helped her husband with the Nedved family farm. She loved to garden and share the produce with others as well as visit with family and attend Czech Days. They moved into Tabor from the farm in 1970. John passed away in 1988.

Dorothy is survived by sisters: Hattie Honomichl, of Wagner, SD and Anne Kotalik, of Tabor, SD, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband, John, who died in 1988, parents, brothers: Ed, Steve and Oscar, and sister, Violet Becvar.

Ethel M. Nysven, age 89, of Yankton, died Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Friday, October 17, 2008 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Ken Bain officiating. Burial will be in the St. Agnes Parish Cemetery (Sigel) immediately following the mass. Visitations will be 5 to 9 PM, Thursday, October 16, 2008 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Ethel was born April 5th 1919 in Yankton to Nick and Martha [Baerwaldt] Lucas. She was united in marriage to Carl Nysven in Yankton, SD. on April 14th 1942. They farmed south of Centerville until 1954 then moved to the Irene area and farmed there until 1975. Ethel moved to Yankton after her husband, Carl past away. She worked at Stuelpnagels until her retirement. They had 2 sons: Earl [Judy] Nysven of Dakota City, NE. and Ron [Darlene] Nysven of Yankton, SD; 4 grandchildren: Dale Nysven, Brenda Gloden, Daniel Nysven Jodi Hlavka; 9 great grandchildren and 1 great great-grandson.

She is also survived by her sister, Darlene [Orville] Ellwein of Freeman, SD, sister-in-law, Darlene Lucas, and brother-in-law, Dennis Peitz both of Yankton, SD. and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Carl, 2 sisters: Lauretta Holoch and Clara Peitz, 2 brothers: Arnold and Lloyd Lucas.

Ellora June Oorlog, age 84, of Olivet, SD passed away October 10, 2008 at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at the Olivet United Methodist Church in Olivet, SD with Rev. Kathy Kluis officiating. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland. Visitations will be from 6-9 PM, Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home in Menno with the family present from 6-7 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Chad Ehrismann, Eric Turner, Travis Oorlog, Ryan Oorlog, Tim Haas, and Kelly Denton. Honorary pallbearers will be her Granddaughters and Great Grandchildren.

Ellora June was born on July 19, 1924 to Henry and Ella (Spindler) Mueller in rural Hutchinson County. She was united in marriage to John Oorlog on October 17, 1942 in Olivet, SD. For 20 years, Ellora was the Postmaster in Olivet. She was a member of the Olivet United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women group.

Her memory will always be cherished by her son, Kent (Sally) Oorlog of Sioux Falls, SD; two daughters, JoAnn (Dan) Ehrismann of Yankton, SD and Diana (Paul) Turner of Yankton, SD; six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, five brothers, two sisters, and one granddaughter.

Mary E. Peterson, age 97, of Sioux City, IA and formerly of Yankton, SD died early Sunday morning, December 7, 2008 at the Westwood Nursing and Rehab Center, Sioux City, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the St. Columba Catholic Cemetery, Mayfield, at approximately 1:00 PM Thursday afternoon. Visitations will be 5 to 9 PM, Wednesday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a scripture service at 7:30 PM. Pallbearers will be her nephews.

Mary was born on Nov. 11, 1911, at Irene SD the daughter of John and Catherine Nooney. She attended public school and graduated from Yankton High School. She married a lifelong friend Richard "Pete" Peterson on Aug. 16, 1949 in Sioux City.

After working in the Yankton area she moved to Sioux City and worked at Fitz Dry Goods and retired as a buyer for Ace Dry Goods in 1981. Her career as a buyer gave her the opportunity to travel to Kansas City, Chicago and New York on buying trips at a time when the trade was primarily run by men. She loved to crochet and always had a box of handmade items ready for gifts. She was a member of the Saint Boniface Church and Rosary Society.

Survivors include sisters, Agnes Nooney of Yankton and Catherine Bruyer of Vermillion and nieces and nephews, Kay Sinkler, Bonnie Bilder (Lawrence), Carol Anderson (Dean), Barbara Thommen (Tom), Pat Robinson (Jim), Coleen Thompson (Don), Mary Lee Stewart (Greg), Theresa Allen (Tom), Bridgett Buchli (Jim), Tim Brennan (Hillary), Jim Brennan (Connie) Larry Bruyer (Louise), Maggie Zahm (Don), Mary Kay Sletten (Tom), Roseann Bierle (Greg), Teresa Millage (Kevin), Patsy Sullivan (TR) and many loving great nieces and great nephews. Her family was large, loving and a very important part of her life.

She was preceded in death by her Parents; Husband; Brothers Bill Nooney, James Nooney and Sister Theresa Brennan.

Ross T. Peterson, age 55, of Yankton, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital after a two-year battle with cancer. Memorial services will be 7:00 PM, Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, with Rev. David Wildermuth officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the Yankton Cemetery. Visitations will be one hour prior to the services at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, SD.

Ross was born on April 4, 1953 in Mitchell, SD to Gilbert and Doris Peterson. He graduated from Yankton High School in 1971, attended SDSU in Brookings for 2 years and worked at Wilson Trailer Co. for almost 30 years.

The family extends a special thank you to the caring staff at Avera Sacred Heart Hospice, especially Margaret Arens, Katie Huff, Tami Mabee, and Chaplain Mary Hochstein.

Ross is survived by his mother, Doris Peterson, Yankton; sisters Pamela (Matt) Lofton, Sioux Falls and Peggy (Bill "Duke") Ellingson, Yankton. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews Gordon Tad (Cassie) Larsen, Dan (Julie) Larsen, Lindsey Ellingson, Cody Ellingson and Jaimie Ellingson.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert L. Peterson in 1994 and his grandparents, Warren and Marie Pipe and Oscar and Blanche Larson.

Memorials may be directed to Avera Sacred Heart Hospice, 501 Summit St., Yankton, SD or Trinity Lutheran Church, 403 Broadway, Yankton, SD.

Albert John Petrik, 86, long-time Gayville area farmer, died Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital. His Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, August 14, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitations will be 6 to 9 PM, Wednesday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7 PM followed by a scripture service at 7:30 PM.

Albert was born Feb. 4, 1922 at Tyndall, SD to John and Anna (Travnicek) Petrik. He married Irene Frances Marek on Jan. 21, 1947 in Yankton. In addition to his passion for farming, Albert was committed to his community as a member and president of the Gayville Board of Education, and the Farmers Cooperative Board, including time as its President; Yankton County 4-H leader; Eucharistic Minister, Sacred Heart Church; Knights of Columbus; and Yankton Elks Lodge #994,

Although Albert's formal education in a country schoolhouse ended after the eighth grade, he took enormous pride that each of his eight children graduated with a college degree.

He is survived by his wife Irene and children: Ann Morgen (Bob), Tabernacle, NJ; Carol Gregg (Jim), Crookston, MN; Marjorie "Maggie" Murphy, (Mike Hamilton) Kona, HI; John Petrik, (Rebecca) Bismark, ND; Nelda Werkmeister, (Dennis) Paulina, IA; Mary Young, Wilmington, DE; Jim Petrik (Sharon), Gayville, SD; Jeff Petrik (Melissa), Knoxville, TN. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Albert was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Martha Slama; a son-in-law, Thomas Murphy; a granddaughter, Gretchen Gregg, and a grandson, John Gregg.

Gertrude Marie "Joni" Quast, age 86, of Menno, passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the Freeman Community Hospital, Freeman, SD after an apparent heart attack. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, November 24, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church, Menno, with Rev. Brad Danielson officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery, Menno, SD. Visitations will be 3 to 8 PM, Sunday, November 23, 2008 at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno, with the family present at 3:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Lee Herrboldt, Gerald Handel, Willie Bertsch, Ron Bertsch, Jim Bertsch, Bob Riley, Paul Baysse and Bruce Anderson.

Gertrude (Joni) was born on April 25, 1922, to Fredrick and Elizabeth (Miller) Johnle on the family farm near Bowdle, SD. She was baptized and confirmed in the Bowdle community. Gertrude graduated from high school and worked for the Farm Security Association in the Bowdle area before being transferred to Menno as assistant to Frank Dodd. She was united in marriage to Gilbert A. Quast at Grace Lutheran Church of Menno on December 19, 1943.

While Gilbert worked at the Menno State Bank, Gertrude kept house, participating in family, town, and church activities. She and Gilbert loved dancing, playing cards and wintering in Arizona. Gertrude will be fondly remembered for her kind smile, beautiful hair and love of family and friends.

Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Susan (Milton) Kogan of Los Angeles; grandson, Jamie (Evelina) Christopherson of Los Angeles; great granddaughter, Coda Christopherson of Los Angeles; granddaughter Millay Kogan of Costa Rica; step-grandson, Gavin Kogan of Santa Cruz, CA; step-granddaughter Taedra (Marie) Roach of Los Angeles; step-great grandchildren Parker Roch and Sarah Roach of Los Angeles; as well as sisters-in-law, Idella (Walter) Herrboldt and Irene Quast of Menno. Preceded in death by her parents, brothers Sam (Bertha) Johnle and Fred (Evelyn) Johnle, as well as sister Olga (Mike) Singer.

Irene J. Rathjen, age 86 of Yankton, SD passed away on June 11, 2008 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, SD, with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the City View Cemetery, Salem OR at a later date. Visitations will be 6 to 8 PM, Friday, June 13, 2008 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary 7:00 PM followed by a scripture service at 7:30 PM. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Yankton VFW Women's Auxiliary, Dorothy Stanage, Charlotte Hanson, Patricia Hansen, Shirley Christensen, Doris Haas, Marlys List, Doris Peterson, Marge Olson, Jackie Simonsen, Jane Slowey, Delores Gwinn, and Marlene Schramm.

Irene was born in Osmond, NE, October 4th, 1921. She was the 8th child of 14 children of John and Elizabeth (Gorges) Lubbers.

When Irene was six years old the Lubbers family moved to Yankton, SD on a farm north of town. Later, they moved to a house on Park Street, where they lived for many years.

Irene attended country school for a year, and then Sacred Heart School and Yankton High School. After High School, Irene moved to Salem, OR and worked at the state hospital. Irene moved to Spokane where she met another Yankton native, Cleo Rathjen. Irene and Cleo were married in Spokane on June 26th, 1943. They moved back to Yankton for a short time and then moved back to Salem, OR, where they both worked at the state hospital. Cleo passed away January 23rd, 1982.

Irene moved to Lebanon, OR, and then moved to Yankton, SD. She was a retired state employee, having worked at the state hospital for many years.

Her husband Cleo, her mother and father John and Elizabeth Lubbers; brothers Raymond, Victor, Leonard, John, and Albert, sisters Marie Erekstol, Dorothy Lubbers, and Frances Lubbers precede Irene in death.

She is survived by 2 sisters, Martha Baker of Kansas City, MO, and Ida Foxhoven of Yankton, SD 2 brothers, Jerome Lubbers of Missoula, MO, and Alfred Lubbers of Lake Kiowa, TX, 1 son, Gary Rathjen of Tellamooh, OR, 3 granddaughters, Melissa, Karen, and Heather of Salem, OR, and 2 great-granddaughters.

Irene was a member of Sacred Heart Church, 50 year member of the Eagles Club in Salem, OR, and a life member of the VFW Auxiliary in Yankton and a member of the Senior Citizen Center, Yankton, SD.
