Marvin S. Schwitzer, age 88 of Menno, SD passed away Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Friday, November 7, 2008 at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel in Menno with Rev. David Ellis officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-8 PM, Thursday, November 6, 2008 at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home in Menno. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be his nieces: Sue Padgett, Susan McBride, Laura McBride, Betty McBride, Mary Canady, and Barbara Pritchitt.

Marvin was born on May 2, 1920 to Sefred E. and Anna (Bangs) Schwitzer in Clarksville, Iowa. In 1933, his family moved to Olivet where he attended school through the seventh grade. He began to seek out new opportunities the first at Crow Creek where he assisted in the construction of a dam and six months later he worked for the forestry service in Hot Springs. It was here that he seemed to really put his skill with a shovel to work. His grandfather instilled in him the sense of workmanship when he encouraged certain skills - like being able to keep a corner square. Marvin then returned back to Menno for a short time before exploring another opportunity taking him to California. In the early 1940's, he shipped out to Pearl Harbor to assist with the building of a hospital. When the building of the hospital fell through, Marvin worked as a mechanic doing a variety of jobs. He then returned back to Menno, where he spent the next 20 years working for the county while still balancing other odd jobs. In 1949, he took a part time job that he would stick with for the next 59 years: a grave digger. He enjoyed his relationship with the Menno Cemetery and held the title of cemetery sextant until the time of his death. Anyone who had the opportunity to visit with Marvin knew his favorite sayings, "I love to dig, and that is a fact" and "Have shovelÉwill travel."

Marvin loved to fish and was an avid bowler who had a room full of trophies. Marvin's home was always open to his friends and neighbors.

Those who will cherish his memory are his sister, Betty (Eric) Ellesson of Mount Prospect, IL; six nieces: Sue Padgett, Susan McBride, Laura McBride, Betty McBride, Mary Canady, and Barbara Pritchitt; four nephews: Jim Canady, Ammon Auch, Leo Auch, and Edward Ellesson, and his great nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Verne Schwitzer, two sisters: Louise Canady and Pearl Auch, and one niece, Peggy Canady.
