Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, Monday, November 3, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Bob Lacey officiating. Leonard was born April 17, 1919 on the family farm near Utica, SD to Bernard and Mary (Vlasek) Hunhoff. When Leonard's dad Bernard died in 1927, Leonard, along with his five brothers and three sisters helped their mother Mary farm the family farm near Sigel Church. He also attended Klimisch country school near Sigel for eight years. When Leonard became older, he worked for other farmers in the surrounding area. He served in the Army from January 1942 to December of 1945, and at that time he was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant.

During his furlough in 1944 from Fort Bliss, Texas, he came home to marry Mildred Pesicka at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Yankton. Together they spent his remaining military service at Fort Beale, CA. Leonard always joked that he fought the "Battle of California", meaning he was one of the lucky ones to stay state side during World War II. Upon his discharge from the Army, they came home to farm in the Yankton area until 1968 when they moved into Yankton.

Leonard liked being outdoors and was glad to work at Cargill in Yankton for seven years, being able to get around in the Yankton area, meeting with other area farmers. In 1975, Leonard began working for the Yankton County Highway Department as a grader operator for 12 years. Leonard retired in 1987 but still kept active with a part time job at Morgan Manufacturing, where he got to know and enjoy everybody there.

In 1996, Leonard stayed home to take care of his wife, Mildred, while she was sick, until her passing in 1999. After her passing, Leonard kept active by spending his time doing yard work, raising a plentiful garden for his children and grandchildren, while working part time at Premium Best Transport, to socialize with all his coworkers. He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of the Yankton Moose for over 50 years.

Leonard became known for his ability to make afghans and cross stitch pictures for family and friends. He also crocheted slippers for grandkids, as a traditional Christmas present. We also looked forward to his famous Fruitcake and Kolaches every year.

Leonard is survived by his daughter, LaLonnie (Kenneth) Hoebelheinrich and son, Thomas (Lois) Hunhoff, both of Yankton; four grandchildren: Holly Hoebelheinrich, Thomas (Leyna) Hoebelheinrich, Sherry (Wade) VanGerpen, and Robert Hunhoff; one sister, Margaret "Marge" Campy of Lake Bay, WA and many nieces and nephews.
