Emil Sternhagen, age 68, of Vermillion, SD passed away Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at the Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Monday, December 20, 2010 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, with Rev. Joe Puthenkulathil officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitations will begin at 4 PM, Sunday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Tabor, with a wake service at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be David Sternhagen, Steven Sternhagen, John Sedlacek, Keith Sternhagen, Daniel Sternhagen, and Ben Nesselhuf. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff at SESDAC, Inc., Vermillion, SD.

Emil was born on Dec. 19th, 1941 to James and Mary (Krcil) Sternhagen in Avon, South Dakota. He grew up on the family farm and lived with his family until age 27. From 1968 to present he lived and worked in a variety of special care facilities spending the last 15 years at SESDAC in Vermillion, South Dakota. A special "Thank You" to Ben Nesselhuf (Emil's guardian) and all the staff at SESDAC who were an extended part of Emil's family. Emil loved polka music and one of the highlights of his life was coming to Czech Days every year. Emil had a colorful vocabulary and an enormous sense of humor and enjoyed playing practical jokes on family and friends.

Survivors include his mother Mary Sternhagen of Tyndall, South Dakota; brother Alvin (Ruth) Sternhagen of Tabor, South Dakota; sister Fern (Bruce) Meyer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; brother Jim (Jane) Sternhagen of Yankton, South Dakota; sister Agnes Kerr of Brighton, Colorado; and nineteen nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father James Sternhagen (1997), his brother Donald Sternhagen (1994), maternal and paternal grandparents, and several aunts and uncles.

Joan Gross, age 63, of Yankton, passed away Friday, January 28, 2011, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, January 31, 2011 at Christ Episcopal Church, Yankton, SD with Rev. James Pearson officiating. Private family committal services will be in the Yankton Cemetery, Yankton, SD. The Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, is assisting with service details. Honorary pallbearers are Sue Higman, Barb Hegert, Patty Karell, Marty McCain, Roni Trezona, and Carol Vardsveen

Joan Taylor Gross was born on March 3, 1947 in Sioux City, Iowa to Floyd "Bud" and Dessa (Payne) Taylor.

Her family moved to Yankton in 1954, where she attended school. She graduated from Yankton High School in 1965. She obtained a bachelor's degree in music from St. Olaf College in 1969 and a master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1971. On April 3, 1971, she married Charlie Gross in Yankton.

Joan was a dedicated and caring wife and mother. She was a music teacher for much of her career, teaching all ages from kindergarten to college. She later enjoyed working at the local Wal-Mart, which kept her in touch with the people in the area. Joan was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church and Chapter BT of the PEO Sisterhood. She was also a contributor to the Yankton Children's Choir and played clarinet in the summer band. Her hobbies included singing, sewing, baking, and serving others in her church and community.

She is survived by her husband, Charlie; daughters: Christie (Doward) Hudlow of Houston, TX and Anne (Brian) Gates of Denver, CO; mother, Dessa Taylor of Yankton, SD; grandchildren: Riley and Chase Hudlow; and brother, Jerry (Diane) Taylor Batesville, AR. She was preceded in death by her father. Memorials are directed to the Christ Episcopal Church Organ Fund or the Yankton Children's Choir.

Deanna Marie James Keeble, age 45 of Santee passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Alpine Village in Verdigre, NE. Funeral services will be at 2 PM, Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at the Oyate Oyanke Community Center, Santee, NE. Burial will be in Our Most Merciful Savior Episcopal Cemetery. Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 31st, and Tuesday, February 1st, at Oyate Oyanke Community Center, in Santee, NE. Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Deanna Marie James Keeble was born November 21st, 1965 in Santee, NE to Thomas Lloyd James, Sr. and JoAnne Lorraine Redowl James Gilpin. Deanna attended and graduated in May 1984 from Santee Public School, Santee, NE. She went on to cosmetology at Stewarts School of Hair Stylist in Sioux City, IA.

Deanna married George Michael Keeble on September 28, 2001 in Center, NE. Deanna and George lived and worked around the Sisseton, SD area before moving to Santee, NE 12 years ago, where she lived until her passing January 29, 2011. Deanna worked in several jobs such as a nursing assistant, a casino cook, daycare cook, and a cook assistant at the elder nutrition program.

Deanna was very devoted to her daughters and her family; they were the joy of her life, along with her love for pets. We will always miss her sense of humor which always brought laughter to our hearts.

Deanna is survived by her husband, George, Santee, NE and her two daughters, Veronica Jo, Santee, NE and Amber Darlyne, Santee, NE; her mother, JoAnne (Nate) Gilpin, Santee, NE; three sisters, Nadine (Virgil) LaPointe, Columbus, NE; Michelle (Eugene) Saul, Santee, NE; Tiffany (Phillip Jr.) Gilpin, Santee, NE; four brothers, Thomas (Dena) James Jr., Niobrara, NE; Travis (Melanie) Gilpin, Sioux City, IA; Tyler Gilpin, Santee, NE; Trooper (TJ) James, Sioux City, IA; five aunts, Diane (Don) LaPointe, Santee, NE, Amy (Danny) Kaskaske, Jones, OK; Meredith (Ardean) DeCory, Lincoln, NE; Marilyn (Darrell) Bilka, Lincoln, NE; Marcie James, Santee, NE; three uncles, Jim (Elaine) James, Yankton, SD; Ambrose (Karen) Redowl, Santee, NE; Danny Lee (Roxanne) Redowl, Columbus, NE; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Deanna was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Lloyd James, Sr.; paternal grandparents, Lloyd & Sophie James; maternal grandparents, Lucille Redowl and Ambrose Redowl, Sr.; two sisters, Theresa Lorraine James and Meredith K. James.

Deanna will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

Zachary Robert Bartunek, age 23, of Yankton, SD died Sunday, October 16, 2011 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD of a gunshot wound. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 20, 2011 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Yankton, with Rev. David Gunderson officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will take place at a later date. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a Scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are Brian Bartunek, Chandler Bartunek, John Lichter, Dan Graveland, Mitch Eide and Mason Eide.

Zachary was born on June 13, 1988 in Yankton, SD to proud parents, Laura (Meyer) and Michael Bartunek.

Zachary had a true love of the outdoors and spent many, many hours fishing on the local waters bringing home fish for supper whenever he could. In 2008, he landed a beautiful bass that earned him a Trophy Bass Award. Zach also enjoyed hunting and spent many hours at Grandpa Bartunek's place hunting rabbits, squirrels and deer. Zach finally had the honor of hunting the big pasture with his uncles last year and brought home a beautiful deer.

Zach started his work career at an early age of 10 with a paper route. From there, he spent his summer vacations working for his uncle on the family garbage route. This turned into a weekly route for him and he held this position until right before his death.

Zach attended Yankton Public Schools and was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at St. John's Lutheran Church of Yankton, SD.

Zach will be remembered fondly by his mother for his loving sensitive nature. Zach was very generous with his family and a great help to his mother. He loved his pets and helped take care of all of them.

Zach will be sorely missed by his mother, Laura Bartunek, grandparents, Robert and Burdette Meyer, all of Yankton, SD; Errol Bartunek Sr. of Yankton, SD; Joan and John Feather of Peever, SD, numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, his half-sister, Melanie Ramirez of Granite Falls, MN and god parents, John and Linda Lichter of Yankton, SD

Zach was preceded in death by his father, Mike Bartunek in 2007.

Zach had many friends and will be missed by everyone that had the honor of knowing him and most especially by his longtime friend, Andy Gwinn and cousin, Jason Bartunek, both of Yankton, SD.

John Gurney, age 53 of Yankton passed away on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton from cancer. Memorial Service will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial of John's cremated remains will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitations will begin Saturday at 1:00 PM and will continue until the time of the service at the funeral home.

John was born on October 25, 1957 to Elizabeth "Elsie" (Brech) and the late Edgar Gurney in Yankton, SD. John is a graduate of Yankton High School. He worked for a short time at the Yankton Human Services Center before he started his lawn mowing business. He also drove school bus for 20 years in which time he enjoyed the children who rode with him. John often related the fun he had with them. He enjoyed going to craft shows in which he had a line of woodworking. He could take a picture and cut one out of wood with a saber saw. John did some beautiful work especially his large work of the "Lord's Prayer".

John is survived by his mother, Elizabeth "Elsie" Gurney of Yankton; two brothers, Stephen (Linda Sue) Gurney of Mankato, MN and Douglas (Lynne) Gurney of Yankton; three sisters, Marcia Gurney of Milwaukee, WI, Linda (Michael) Gilles of Pawling, NY and Sandra (Philip) Spanos of Mitchell, SD; one aunt, Cecilia Schaefer of Yankton; twelve nieces and nephews; ten great-nieces and great-nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Edgar and brothers, Dennis and Terrell, his grandparents, Sewell "Teed" Gurney and Myrtle Gurney and Stephen and Margaret Brech.

Ruth S. Freng, age 94, of Huron, SD and formerly of Yankton, SD, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2009 at the Sunquest Nursing Home, Huron, SD. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 16, 2009 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Paul Opsahl officiating. Burial will be in the Vangen Lutheran Cemetery, Mission Hill, SD at approximately 1:15 PM. Visitations will be 1-9 PM, Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton with a 7:00 PM prayer service by the Yankton VFW Post 791 Ladies Auxiliary. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Dan Sathe, Joey Sathe, Alan Sathe, Steve McVay, Larry Highland and Harold Wuestewald. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Yankton's VFW Post 791, American Legion Post 12 and their Auxiliaries.

Ruth was born on September 11, 1914 to Zacharias and Martha (Ringstad) Sathe at Volin, SD. She lived for over 60 years in Yankton and worked as a cook in many different local restaurants before retiring. She always enjoyed finding time to play bingo.

Ruth worked at the VFW for many years, missing very few days or weekends. Her many years of service helped feed hundreds of people during regular Friday night "Specials" and regular menus on Saturday. She was known for her delicious Ruthy's Ribs. Many more enjoyed beautiful, delicious meals at conventions and meetings held at the VFW as well as receptions, soup kitchens, smelt feeds and other special parties and occasions. She donated many hour of her own time, coming down to clean the kitchens, make salads, defrost refrigerators, clean vents and filters above the stove and all those other tedious, dirty jobs that needed to be done. She was a life member of over fifty years in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary for many years.

Ruth's memory will be cherished by her son, Richard "Dick" (Beverly) Freng of Huron, SD; sister, Edna McVay of Minneapolis, MN; sisters-in-law: Helen Sathe of Yankton, SD, and Vivian Sathe of Yankton, SD; grandchildren: Karen (Greg) Olson of Rapid City, SD, Carmen (Brent) Mason of Frankfort, SD, Kyle Freng of Huron, SD, Cristen Kuno of Sturgis, SD, Karla (Corey) Wiegel of Huron, SD, and Courtney Freng of Minneapolis, MN; and great-grandchildren: Amanda (fianceĢ Jason Danielson) Olson of Sioux Falls, SD, Justin Olson of Rapid City, SD, Nicholas Kuno of Sturgis, SD, Tyler, Tory and Teagan Mason, all of Frankfort, SD, and Morgan and Nolan Wiegel of Huron, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Thordis Nelson, Gunda Bennett, Oscar Sathe, Marvin Sathe, Bob Sathe, and Sally Gregory.

Roger Lee Uhrich, age 70, of Yankton, SD went to be with his Lord on Thursday, July 9, 2009 surrounded by his family, after a lengthy battle with COPD. Roger had been under the care of hospice for almost 3 years. Funeral services will be 10 AM, Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Chaplain Mary Hochstein officiating. Burial with military rites will be approximately 1:15 PM in the Milltown Cemetery, Milltown, SD. Visitations will be from 4-8 PM, Monday, July 13, 2009 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Roger was born August 8, 1938 to Philip and Ona (Bullington) Uhrich on the family farm near Milltown, SD. He graduated from Parkston High School in 1956. Roger joined the Army National Guard in January 1957 and was honorably discharged in July 1981. His rank was SFC and he was the company's Mess Sergeant. Roger worked for Welfl Construction Company on many jobs, local and out of town. He also worked for TCI (now Gehl Mfg.), and retired from Kolberg Mfg. in 1997 due to his declining health.

Roger married Mary Lewis on May 21, 1958 at Christian Church in Spencer, SD. To this union three children were born; Debra, David and Dale.

Cherishing his memory are his wife Mary, Yankton, SD, daughter Debra (Ron) Johnson, Yankton, SD; son David (Lori) Uhrich, Parkston, SD; and daughter-in-law Gerine Uhrich, Joplin, Mo; and special friend John (Sandy) Kennedy; grandchildren, Philip Uhrich, Joshua Jones, Elizabeth Uhrich and Olivia Uhrich; great grandchildren Racquel Jones, Adrian Uhrich and Dawson Uhrich.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents Philip & Ona Uhrich, brothers Gerald & Philip, Jr.; sisters Kay Sinkbeil and Sharon Howes; son Dale Uhrich; and great granddaughter Carolyn Uhrich.

Mason Patrick Vig, age 26, of Gilbert AZ and formerly of Yankton, SD passed away on Friday, February 17, 2012 in Gilbert. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed in Yankton, SD. Rev. Dave Wildermuth is officiating. Visitations will be 4 to 7 PM, Friday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, SD with a Scripture service at 7:00 PM followed by a video tribute and memories sharing. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Casket bearers for the funeral are Frank Leibfarth, Trey Erickson, Bryce Ahrendt, Mike Thunker, Heath Hagge, Jake Pole, Tom Hill, Brady Bulian, Eric Pollard, Dan Morrison, Cody Garvey, Mike Loberg, Andy Pick, and Matt Vig. Honorary Pallbearers are his YHS Classmates of 2004, his PT Classmates at A.T. Still, and his Augie baseball teammates of 2005-2008.

Mason Patrick Vig was born in Yankton on June 6, 1985, to parents Joe and Patti (Pick) Vig. Although born six weeks early and weighing only 5 pounds, he quickly grew into a fit, strong, and healthy young man. Mason had many interests and loved sports of all kinds, while maintaining an excellent academic record throughout his school years, graduating Summa Cum Laude. He was a Gold Letter Award winner at Yankton High School, earning accolades in the 3 sports of football, basketball, and track all 4 years of high school. He was a member of a State Championship Teener Baseball Team, a Quarterback on the 2002 State AA Championship Football Team, a National Honor Society member, Optimist Youth of the Year, Chris Burgess Memorial recipient, named to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee of the NCC, and the recipient of the 2009 Mark Mehlhaf Amateur Baseball Award, in addition to volunteering on many youth and community activities. He graduated with a Biology Degree from Augustana College and played college baseball for the Vikings (1B and 3B) all 4 years, despite being diagnosed with cancer in the spring of his Junior year (2007), a battle he fought and won.

At the time of his death, Mason was attending A. T. Still University in Mesa, in his second year of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Mason donated his corneas to the Donor Network of Arizona, so that possibly others could appreciate nature like he did, which is reflective of his constant desire to help others. He has been mentoring a disadvantaged high school youth for the past few months and liked to use his wit to make others laugh, especially with his great impressions of famous people. He always wanted to 'pay it forward' with his love, his smile, and his kindness.

He is survived by his parents, Joe and Patti Vig of Yankton, his sisters Julie (Kevin) O'Brien and Melanie (Mark) Ryken, his brother Mark, all of Yankton, his girlfriend Shana Fredrickson of Phoenix, his niece Bergen O'Brien, his nephews Rex Ryken, Godson, Rugby Ryken, and Godson, Abe O'Brien, all of Yankton, and a total of 90 aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Mason was preceded in death by his Grandparents, Alfred and LaVerne Pick and Julian and Martha Vig, and two uncles, Gary Pick and Robert Vig.

Memorials for Mason may be directed to the Yankton Baseball Association or Trinity Lutheran Church.
