Vicki S. Kotalik, age 60 of Yankton passed away Saturday evening at the Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Friday, October 19, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, SD with Rev. Ralph Egbert officiating. Burial will be in the Gayville Cemetery, Gayville, SD. Visitations will be from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, SD with the family present. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Vicki was born July 11, 1952 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD to Kermit and Frances (Larson) Ryken. She had 3 siblings, one brother, Richard, and two sisters, Barb and Nancy. Vicki was raised in Gayville, SD and attended elementary school and high school, graduating from Gayville/Volin High School in 1970. When Vicki was young she enjoyed swimming, water skiing and boating with her family.

Vicki's dream was to pursue a career in modeling, but she met the love of her life, Paul Kotalik and they were married January 9, 1971. To this union their first child, Joseph John was born on November 17 1971. There were three more children born to this union; Melissa Ann on April 17, 1973, Paula Jo on October 14, 1976, and Robert James on August 19, 1980. Vicki and Paul lived on a farm near Lesterville, SD. They later moved to her parent's farm near Gayville, SD. Vicki and Paul were married for 26 years when Paul passed away unexpectedly on February 13, 1997.

When Vicki was in her 20's, she worked as a nurse's aide in the Scotland Hospital. While at the Scotland Hospital, they offered to pay for her to attend nursing school, but she decided to stay at home and raise her children.

Vicki's family and grandchildren were her pride and joy and she loved spending time with them. On June, 2008, because of health problems, she entered the Yankton Care Center in Yankton, SD.

She is survived by her sons, Joseph (Heather) Kotalik of Lesterville, SD and Robert Kotalik (Faye Gilles) of Tabor, SD; daughters, Melissa Kotalik of Sioux Falls, SD and Paula (Terry) Hagen of Hartington, NE; 18 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; sisters, Barb White of Aurora, CO, Nancy Knight of Yankton, SD and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, Richard Ryken, grandfather, James Ryken and grandmother, Amanda Pederson.

Gary R. Thompson, II, age 35, of Yankton passed away on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Memorial services will be 3:00 PM, Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Visitations will begin one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Gary was born on July 25, 1977 in West Palm Beach, FL to Gary Robert Thompson and Gayle (Sawtelle) Russo.

Gary was employed at Cedar Village as a resident assistant in Yankton, SD. He was a kind, generous, loving personwho loved everyone he met and everyone loved him. He was always laughing, smiling, telling a joke, loved the outdoors, and riding his bicycle.

Gary is survived by his daughter, Peyton Ann Marie Thompson of Lincoln, NE; special friend, Shelly Nowak and her son, Daniel of Yankton, SD; mother, Gayle Russo and stepdad, Michael Russo of Cape Coral, FL; his father, Gary Robert Thompson of Newport Richie, FL; grandfather, Jim Sawtelle of Cape Coral, FL, many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Jan Sawtelle and grandparents, Marjorie and George Wooten.

In keeping with Gary's loving and generous spirit, it was his decision to donate life so that others may live.

The family requests that memorials be directed to: The Gary R. Thompson, Jr. memorial fund at Wells Fargo Bank, 1920 Broadway, Yankton, SD.

Anne Hoyer, age 60, of Yankton, SD passed away on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell, SD after a hard battle with lung cancer that spread to her brain. A Celebration of Anne's Life will be 3:00 PM, Saturday, February 9, 2013 at the First Assembly of God, Yankton, with Rev. Jeff Mantz officiating followed by a potluck dinner in the fellowship room. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the church. The Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, is entrusted with arrangements.

Anne was born on January 23, 1953 in Aurora, IL to Raymond and Mary Jo (McNamara) Johnson. From age 12 on, Anne was raised by her Uncle and Aunt, Robert and Carol (Utost) Johnson due to the death of both her parents. Anne graduated from St. James Public High School in 1972 and took college classes at a nearby vocational school. She worked as a housekeeper for many years and later attended college for hotel/motel management.

Anne married Robert M. Hoyer on April 23,1994, but the couple had been together since 1979. Anne was an extremely loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend and was always looking out for everyone else. Anne enjoyed painting, knitting and all types of crafting, but what she enjoyed most was family time, whether it was sharing a meal or playing cards or dice.

Anne is survived by her husband Robert M. Hoyer of Yankton, SD; brother, Paul Johnson of Duluth, MN; son Adrian Honomichl (Shawna Shoemaker) of Sioux Falls, SD; daughters, Charity Schlueter (Don Koory) of Omaha, NE and Michelle Hoyer of Yankton, SD; and ten grandchildren: Tyson Viessman, Sean Schlueter, Lexey Enstad, Mariah Hoyer, Kaitlyn Koory, Kayle Koory, Hayden Hupertz, Tristen Koory, Elijah Hoyer and Savannah Dove; Uncles and Aunts Robert and Carol Johnson and James and LuAnne Gjerest; and cousins: Jens, Heidi, Gretchen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Mary Jo (McNamara) Johnson, cousin Andrea, and grandparents.

A Memorial Fund has been set up at First National Bank, 332 Broadway, P. O. Box 670, Yankton, SD 57078.

LeRoy Darius LeFebvere, son of Joe LeFebvere and Hillary McCann of Yankton, SD came earlier than expected to his parents and left this world and went to Jesus' arms as an angel on Monday, December 24, 2012 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, Monday, December 31, 2012 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, SD with Rev. Ken Lulf officiating. Private family burial will take place. Visitations will begin at 6:00 PM, Sunday, December 30, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, SD with a 7:30 PM Prayer Service.

LeRoy is survived by his parents, Hillary McCann and Joe LeFebvere of Yankton, SD, 4 sisters: Crystal of Sioux City, IA, Kasmira, Addison, and Isabel all of Yankton, SD ; two brothers, Canby and Levi of Yankton, SD; grandparents, Robert and Suzette LeFebvere of Yankton, SD, Tate and Kristy McCann of Vermillion, SD, and Michael and Kathleen Whitfield of Yankton, SD.

He was preceded in death by many great-grandparents, great aunts, uncles and cousins.

Fredrick Raymond Nelsen, age 62, of Yankton, SD died Thursday, January 24, 2013 at home. Memorial Services will be 2:00 PM, Monday, January 28, 2013 at Calvary Baptist Church, Yankton, SD with Rev. Rick Slattery officiating. Visitations will begin at 6:30 PM, Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton with a 7:00 PM Scripture Service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Fredrick was born March 22, 1950 in Grand Rapids, MI to Jerome and Donna (Balgooyen) Nelsen. He graduated from Richmond High School in Richmond, IN in 1968. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, served for three years and was honorably discharged on August 18, 1971. Fred married Susan Burgers on May 30, 1972. In 1975, he graduated from Cuyahoga Community College as a Physician's Assistant. He worked for Deaconess Hospital in Milwaukee, WI and then for the Federal Bureau of Prisons until his retirement in 2000. Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and reading.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Nelsen of Yankton, SD; sons: Andrew Nelsen of Yankton, SD, Benjamin (Rebecca) Nelsen of Vermillion, SD, and Samuel (Jacy) Nelsen of Vermillion, SD; three grandchildren: Cody, Kinley and Kale; sisters, Susan Browning of Severn, MD and Patricia Heywood of Spokane, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerome and Donna Nelsen.

Celia Ann "Sister" Thomas Briard (Ocaze Topa Win), age 24 of Santee, NE passed away unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, January 08, 2013. Visitations will be at the Oyate Oyanke Community Center, Santee, NE with a Prayer Service Thursday and Friday evenings. Funeral Service will be at 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Oyate Oyanke Community Center Santee, NE with Ron Thomas officiating. Singers and drum group are Mato Pejuta. Burial will be in the Congregational Cemetery in Santee. Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, SD is in care of the arrangements.

Celia was born August 16, 1988 in Yankton, SD to Rick & Joyce (Martin) Thomas. She attended elementary and junior high school at Santee Public School, graduating high school from Niobrara Public School in 2006. While she was in school, she competed in Junior Olympic Boxing in Nebraska. In the summer of 2006, she graduated from the National Indian Youth Police Academy in Wisconsin and received the Team Leader Award. Celia married Jake Briard in 2007 and was enrolled in the Santee Sioux National Americorp Program. She attended Northeast Community College in Norfolk, NE in 2008. In 2009, she worked for the Madison, NE Juvenile Detention Center. She was employed at Feather Hill until 2010 and attended Nebraska Indian Community in Santee, NE in 2011. Celia was currently employed at the Santee Sioux Nation Ohiya Casino and a member of the Santee Sioux Nation.

Celia was the proud mother of her four year old daughter, Sicily Marie Briard, who was the love of her life. She cherished her Dakota and Choctaw cultures and traditions; at a young age she won the title of Miss Santee Sioux MIA. Celia was a fancy shawl dancer and a traditional sundancer. She had a heart of gold and was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need. Her great sense of humor would light up any room, and will be forever loved and greatly missed by her daughter, parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Sicily; husband, Jake; parents, Rick and Joyce Thomas; brothers: Wakiyan Thomas, Cedric and Issac Denney; sisters, Ronette Thomas and Stephanie Thomas; aunts, uncles, cousins, many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Albert and Linda Thomas, and Celia Martin, two brothers, Richard Jr. and Hepan Thomas, uncles: Daniel Thomas, Gary Thomas, and George Thomas, aunt, Dawn Starlin, special brother, TaCanku Thomas and cousin, Tony Thomas.

Ronald F. Grimme age 66 of Yankton passed away early Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at the Sunset Manor in Irene, SD. Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM, Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Tyndall, SD with Rev. Duane Coates officiating. Burial will be in the Tyndall Cemetery. Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Tyndall is in care of the arrangements. Pallbearers will be Brian Gibson, Brad Gibson, Kevin Gibson, Danny Jerke, Randy Gibson, and Dennis Olsen.

Ronald was born in Yankton, SD to Fred and Betty (Gibson) Grimme on December 31, 1946. He was baptized in the Methodist Church in Avon, SD in 1947. He graduated from Geddes High School in Geddes, SD in 1965. He later attended Ambassador College for a period of time. While living in Yankton, Ronald was employed at Pizza Hut and various other businesses.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Betty (Gibson) Grimme, grandparents, Louis and Pauline Grimme, and Ernest and Jeanette Gibson.

Everyone who knew Ron saw a kind, generous and gentle man. His memory will be cherished by his sister, Patricia (Grimme) Michaels and her husband Bob Corry, his niece, Shannon Evangelista, a nephew, Greg Michaels, and a great nephew, Lucas Michaels. Family members Gary and Linda Gibson, Norman Gibson and family, and Verna and Glen Jerke visited him Easter Sunday, just two days before his passing.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Ron's caseworker and friend Fred Bender. They would also like to deeply thank the Sunset Manor staff and the Sacred Heart Hospital staff for their professionalism and the tender mercies that they extended to our Ronnie.

Ronald's wishes were to have memorials directed to National Alliance of Mental Illness, PO Box 88808, Sioux Falls, SD 57109.

Martha E. Anderson, age 87, of Yankton, passed away on September 29, 2012 at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home, Viborg, SD.

Visitations will be 5-7 PM Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a 7:00 PM rosary and a 7:30 PM scripture service. Mass of Christian Burial will be l0:30 AM Friday, October 5, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Martha Edith, daughter of Albert and Mary (Houser) Koupal, was born December 2, 1924 in Tabor, SD. She attended Tabor schools graduating as valedictorian from Tabor High in 1942. Following graduation she was accepted into the Women in Teaching Service (WITS) Program during the war years and consequently taught for 10 years in rural schools in the Yankton, Lesterville, and Irene areas. She continued her education at Yankton and Mount Marty Colleges.

She married Niels J. Anderson in Tabor on Thanksgiving Day in 1952. From this union four children were born: Daniel Joseph (Nancy) Anderson, Dell Rapids, SD; Joan Marie (John) Heemstra, Mitchell, SD; Timothy John (Shari) Anderson, Windsor, CO and Anthony Jay (Dawn) Anderson, Yankton, SD.

Bilingual in English and Czech, she was very proud of her heritage and took a great interest in compiling Koupal and Anderson family histories and genealogies. She was active with her children in both Boy and Girl Scouting and enjoyed varied interests throughout the years including gardening, cooking, reading, sewing, bird watching, music and poetry. Ever the recycler, she was creative in projects and inventive with cast offs.

She worked for 27 years at the Yankton Good Will Store making a great many acquaintances and friends through daily interactions with customers. She was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and then St. Benedict's Parish as well as a 50 plus year member of Catholic Daughters.

She loved her Catholic faith, time with her grandchildren, her home, and sharing family memories.

Surviving her are her four children; two sisters, Kay Nelson of Yankton, SD and Marie Nelson of Vermillion, SD; two sisters-in-law, Ida James of Overland Park, KS and Arlene Lefler of Sioux Falls, SD; brother-in-law, Ken Anderson of Spearfish, SD and special family friend and caregiver, Michele Lindner of Gayville, SD. Her life was enriched by 11 grandchildren: Destiny, Stephany, and Niels Anderson of Yankton, SD; Benjamin Heemstra of Richmond, VA; Sara Anderson of Sioux Falls, SD and Laura Anderson of Dell Rapids, SD; Bethany Gassman of Yellowstone National Park, WY; Samantha and Breann Anderson of Windsor, CO; Colton Anderson of Colorado Springs, CO; Ashley Hauger of Miliken, CO; 5 great grandchildren: Zander, Shaun, Tristan, Gaege, and Christopher and many nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Niels, in 1971, her parents, a brother, Edwin, one great grandchild, Anthony Jay and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
