Sister Rose Abeyta

Sister Rose Abeyta, 93, died in the monastery Care Center Thursday morning, January 6, 2005, after suffering a stroke on December 29.
The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 8 in the Bishop Marty Chapel, with burial following in the monastery cemetery. Vespers wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the chapel.

Kostel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Isabelle Leontina was the oldest of 12 children born to Joseph and Josephine (Gomez) Abeyta on November 4, 1911, on the family farm in Park View, N.M.

Her elementary and first two years of high school were in public schools. Desiring to become a religious but having no contact with sisters, she was urged by her pastor to consider Yankton, and she entered the community September 13, 1930. She completed high school at Mount Marty in 1932, and made profession as Sister Rose August 16, 1933.

She attended Mount Marty Junior College for several summers, and earned her bachelor's degree in chemistry and mathematics at Mt. St. Scholastica College, Atchison, KS, in 1949. In 1958, she completed studies for an M.Ed in administration and library science at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Other institutions Sister Rose attended were San Jose College, CA; New Mexico State, Las Cruces, AZ; Tuskegee Institute, AL, where she earned an MSEd in chemistry; and Wesleyan University, Lincoln.

Sister Rose began a long teaching career the day after making profession, having written the teacher's examination for certification. It is difficult to believe her first year, according to her account, she had difficulty in handling unruly students, when in later life burly high school boys could be silenced by a look. For the first 15 years of teaching, she taught in elementary classrooms in Epiphany, Dimock, Kranzburg and Tabor, SD; and Selfridge and Richardton, ND. She moved to the high school level in 1949, teaching in York, NE, and Salem, SD for 13 years, and in Cedar Catholic, Hartington, NE, for 29 years. Her teaching ministry was cut short when she suffered a massive stroke in 1991 and returned to the motherhouse for recuperation and made a remarkable recovery. For a number of years she did book-binding at the monastery, and was active in various household ministries until her second stroke just nine days ago.

She is remembered for her great generosity, her outstanding success as a teacher, her love of family, and a wonderful sense of humor. She was also an avid card player. Whatever she did was done to perfection.

Sister Rose is survived by her Benedictine community, one brother Frank, Albuquerque, NM; three sisters, Louise (William) Chavez, Albuquerque, NM; Susan (Jack) Corrigan, Denver, CO; and Josephine (Ed) Morrill, Quincy, MD, several nieces and nephews, and a host of former students.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four children who died in infancy, and three adult brothers, Gabriel, Mark and Charles.
