Ronald Raymond Nysven, age 65, of Yankton passed away Thursday afternoon, August 16, 2012 at his home as a result of an accident. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Rod Veldhuizen officiating. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Irene, SD. A lunch will follow the burial at Calvary Baptist Church, 2407 Broadway Avenue. Visitations will be from 5-9 PM, Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton and will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Dale Nysven, Cole Iverson, Michael Hanson, Chauncey Christiansen, and Larry Gloden, and Carla Christiansen.

Ron was born to Carl and Ethel (Lucas) Nysven on June 25, 1947 in Yankton, SD. He attended school in Irene, SD. He married Darlene Iverson on November 2, 1974 at First Lutheran Church in Wakonda, SD. Ron and Darlene have two children, Daniel Lee (through his first marriage) and Jodi. Ron has four wonderful grandchildren: Rainy and Elliot Nysven and Kelsey and Nathaniel Hlavka.

Ron was a very hard working man, in farming, welding, Gehl's Manufacturing, and trucking especially Schuster Trucking Co. in LeMars, IA. He was a talented and amazing woodworker and the owner of his own business Oak 4 Ever making beautiful oak furniture and cabinetry for many homes and businesses in the area. Ron loved what he did and was good at it. He left a legacy in his own home and other homes and businesses.

Ron loved to spend time with his wife, children and, grandchildren. He also enjoyed visiting with friends, family, and riding his Honda Goldwing Trike. In the early 80's, he loved truck and tractor pulls. Ron was a big fan of NASCAR especially following Tony Stewart, Home Depot car.

Those who will miss him dearly are his wife of 38 years, Darlene Nysven of Yankton, SD; his two children: Daniel Lee and special friend, Denise of Volin, SD and Jodi Lynn Hlavka and her husband, Robbie of Casper, WY; four grandchildren; brother, Earl Nysven and his wife, Judy of South Sioux City, NE; brothers-in-law: Dean and his wife, Cheryl Iverson, Dennis Iverson, Dale Iverson, and Ronald Iverson; sisters-in-law, Shirley O'Dea and Donna Iverson; his aunts Connie Kendall of Yankton, SD, Gladys Bergstrom and her son Edward of Centerville, SD, Hazel Landman of Sioux Falls, SD, Alice Nysveen of Tulsa, OK, Marlene (Lloyd) Coffman of Stigler, OK; his uncle Chuck Denzin of Yankton, SD; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dessa Taylor, age 97, of Yankton, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2012 at the Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, November 26, 2012 at the United Church of Christ (Congregational), Yankton, with Rev. Rick Jensen officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the church. The Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, is assisting with service details.

Dessa was born September 11, 1915 on a farm in Woodbury County IA to Armour and Pearl (Davis) Payne. Following graduation from Moville High School in 1933, she attended the National Business Training School in Sioux City, IA. Dessa married Floyd D. "Bud" Taylor on May 29, 1937 in Moville, IA. They had two children, Jerry and Joan. In 1954 the family moved to Yankton, SD where Dessa resided until her death. She worked in banking and finance, including eleven years as credit manager for Sears Roebuck and Co. in Yankton, SD. From 1968 until her retirement in 1985, Dessa was employed by the City of Yankton in the City Treasurers' Office and as Deputy Finance Officer. In her retirement, she enjoyed bridge, golf, and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by one son, Jerry D. (Dianne) Taylor of Batesville, AR; a son-in-law, Charlie Gross of Yankton, SD; three granddaughters: Christie (Doward) Hudlow of Houston, TX, Anne (Brian) Gates of Denver, CO, and Julie Taylor of Clayton, NC. In addition, she is survived by four great-grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.

Dessa was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, daughter, Joan Taylor Gross, grandson, Jeffrey D. Taylor, two brothers and two sisters, including Dick Payne and Carol Larson of Yankton, SD.

Memorial may be made to United Church of Christ, 218 W. 5th Street, Yankton, SD 57078.

Joan I. Oswald, age 82, of Yankton, SD passed away Friday morning, March 15, 2013 at her residence. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, SD with Rev. John Rutten officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitations will be begin at 5:00 PM, Wednesday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a Scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are David Oswald, Drew Oswald, Barry Glanzer, Quinn Van Treeck, Travis Van Treeck and Charley Van Treeck.

Joan was born February 16, 1931 in Sioux City, IA to Ralph & Eunice (Anderson) Becker. She married Donald J. Oswald on February 18, 1949 in Sioux Falls, SD. Joan worked in the Yankton County Treasurer's office for a major portion of her working career. She was promoted to the position of Deputy Treasurer, before being elected as Yankton County Treasurer. Joan served in that position for many years. She and her husband Don purchased a grocery store on Main Street in Yankton, SD. Don and Joan ran Don's Super Saver until their retirement.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Donald of Yankton, SD; sons, Dennis Oswald of Yankton, SD and Donald (Jennifer) Oswald, Jr. of Omaha, NE. daughters, Cheryl (John) Van Treeck of Denver, CO and Deborah Johnson of Newport Beach, CA; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Gene Becker, Dick Becker, Jack Becker, and sister, Ruth Becker.

Norine D. Peterka, of Yankton, died Friday, March 8, 2013 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Monday, March 11, 2013 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, SD with Rev. Ken Lulf officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4:00-6:00 PM, Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Norine was born October 22, 1921 in Yankton, SD to Val & Mona (Hoyt) Rheiner. She grew up in the Yankton and Lake Andes area. She graduated from Yankton High School and for the next five years she worked for the Yankton School District. On September 27, 1944, she was united in marriage to George Peterka at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton. For eighteen years she worked for Edward Jones Investment in Yankton. She was a member of Royal Neighbors, Sacred Heart Hospital Auxiliary, and St. Benedict Catholic Church.

She is survived by her son Dennis (Diane) Peterka of Waverly, IA; daughters Teresa (Peterka) Engel of Sioux Falls, SD and Sharon Peterka of Yankton, SD; brother Robert Rheiner of Geneva, NE; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband George, her parents, brother Neil Rheiner, and son-in-law Al Engel.

Lorene R. Pokorny, age 76, of Yankton, SD passed away Sunday, April 07, 2013 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. After her services her remains have been gifted to the Sanford USD School of Medicine, Vermillion, SD. Visitations will begin at 6:00 PM, Tuesday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a Scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Lorene Regina Pokorny, daughter of George and Mary (Meng) Schmidt, was born September 6, 1936 in Yankton, SD. Lorene attended grade school in Wynot, NE. She was joined in marriage to Lawrence Henry Pokorny on October 8, 1956. Nine children were blessed to this union: Lawrence, Susan, Lora, Bruce, Brenda, Sally, Lisa, Sheila, and Beth.

Lorene served the Yankton School District for 28 years until her retirement in 2005. After retirement, Lorene worked for the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Rectory. Lorene enjoyed cooking for her family and spending time with them. She also enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino. She will be remembered for her love of family, for her love of the church, and for her selfless giving to others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary (Meng) Schmidt; granddaughter, Heather Llewellyn; grandson, Joseph Pokorny; and siblings: Henry, Leonard, Gerald, Anthony, Katherine Rodekuhr, and Raymond.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence; her sister, Marlene Eskens, her nine children: Larry Pokorny, Susan Sherman, Lora (Elmer) Haberman, Bruce (Norma) Pokorny, Brenda Hoover, Sally (Mitch) West, Lisa (Jon) Willert, Sheila (Rick) Kleinschmit, and Beth (Justin) Pokorny, and by 20 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Janice Marie Roth, age 69, of Yankton, passed away Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD from injuries sustained in a fall. Janice was born October 23, 1942 near Tripp, SD, to Sam and Amalia (Schmidt) Weisz and raised on a farm east of Parkston. She married Jerry Roth on May 26, 1963 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Kaylor, SD. To this union, one son, Tom, and two daughters, Tamara and Fonda, were born. She farmed with Jerry east of Parkston, SD. Following retirement, she resided in Yankton and spent the winters in Donna, Texas.

Throughout her life, Janice was a loving mother, devoted homemaker, caring friend and a woman of deep faith. She is fondly remembered for her sewing, baking and cooking. She had a green thumb and loved spending time gardening and working in her flower garden. She enjoyed volunteering at the church: teaching Sunday school, serving & sewing for altar guild, and working at the soup kitchen. She was known for her ability to fix anything that needed fixing. Janice especially cherished time spent with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Roth of Yankton, SD; daughter, Tamara (Dominic) Gambino of Eden Prairie, MN; son, Tom (Sara) Roth of Mission Hill, SD and daughter, Fonda (Chad) Lacey of Yankton, SD; nine grandchildren: Nicholas, Sienna, and Michael Gambino; Jessica, Brian, Mitch, and Kelly Roth; and Ashley and Victor Lacey; brothers and sisters: Roy (JoAnn) Weisz of Parkston, SD, Lawrence (Alice) Weisz of Parkston, SD, Kenneth(Marie) Weisz of Parkston, SD , Lila (Wilmer) Frohreich of Yankton, SD, Geneva (Lloyd) Sorlien of Scotland, SD, Diana (Rudy) Jerke of Scotland, SD, Richard (Cheryl) Weisz of Sturgis, SD, and Robert (Laura) Weisz of Mitchell, SD; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters, Betty and Mary Ann Weisz.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Yankton, with Rev. Dani Jo Ninke officiating. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Monday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory with a memory sharing and scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery.

Alma (Bueber) Streyle, age 86 of Menno, SD went into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 30, 2013.

Alma is survived by her daughter, Jarrett Gjerde of Loveland, CO; her granddaughter, Teah (Illyan) Everette and great grandson, Mason, all of Castle Rock, CO.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray and son Elwyne.

Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Menno is entrusted with Alma's arrangements.

Interment will be in the Menno Cemetery.

Mary H. (Krcil) Sternhagen passed away August 15, 2012 at the age of 92, at the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center. A Mass of Christian burial will held at 10:30 am Saturday, August 18, 2012 at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, South Dakota with Father Daniel Moris officiating and Msgr. Carlton Hermann con-celebrating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm on Friday, August 17 at the Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel in Tabor with a wake service and rosary at 7:00 pm. Visitation will resume one hour prior at the funeral chapel. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers will be her great-grandchildren.

Mary was born to Anton and Mary (Bame) Krcil of Dante, South Dakota on September 10, 1919. She married James J. Sternhagen January 21, 1941. They lived on the Sternhagen family farm by Scotland until moving to Tabor in 1971. She remained in Tabor until 2008 when she moved to the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center. Mary worked many years as a cook at the Scotland Nursing Home, Yankton Sacred Heart Hospital, Tabor Senior Citizen Center, and maintaining the rectory at St. Wenceslaus Church. Mary was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 37 years and a lifetime member of the Tabor Senior Citizens Center. She was also a long-time member of the Catholic Workman and St. Wenceslaus Altar Society.

She is survived by a sister, Leona Boehmer of New London, Minnesota; her son, Alvin (wife Ruth) Sternhagen of Tabor, South Dakota; her daughter, Fern (husband Bruce) Meyer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; her son, James, Jr. (wife Jane) Sternhagen of Yankton, South Dakota; her daughter, Agnes (Sternhagen) Kerr of Brighton, Colorado; eleven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James, and sons, Emil and Donald.

JoAnne "Jo" Mary Sudbeck, 64 left for Heaven on Thursday, March 21, 2013 after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, Monday, March 25, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. John Rutten officiating. Burial of JoAnne's cremated remains will be at a later date in the Hurley Cemetery. Visitations will begin 5PM, Sunday, March 24, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a 7 PM rosary, video tribute and 7:30 PM Scripture Service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are Mathew Graves, Mathew Strutz, Jesse Christopherson, Corey Sudbeck, Heath (Bo) Sudbeck and Andrew Graves.

She was born to George and Leona (Jensen) Graves on June 13, 1948 in Yankton, SD. Jo graduated from Hurley High School in 1966 and LPN nursing school at Sioux Valley in 1970. Before nursing school, she met Ken Sudbeck while smashing pumpkins with mutual friends, and fell in love. They were married on February 20, 1971 during a raging ice storm, shortly after, their first son, Jason was born, followed by another son, Alan and baby girl, Amy. They lived in Yankton their entire married life.

Jo worked at Human Services Center in the geriatric unit for 25 years and then at Sanford Nursing Home in Vermillion. She enjoyed her entire working life giving people the dignity they deserved until their end.

Her life centered around family, especially her two grandsons Conner and Cooper, loving them with her whole heart. She enjoyed and spent many hours doing crafty things, going to various events, camping, and just hanging out. She loved needlework, family time, cooking, her flowers and immaculate yard, and playing Farmville with her many on-line friends.

Surviving is her hubby, Ken; son, Jason (Carmen) and their sons, Conner and Cooper; son, Alan; daughter, Amy (Amanda Beeson); a sister, Mary (Mike) Christopherson; a brother, George (Glenda) Graves; and many nieces and nephews.

Jo was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Roger Graves.
